It’s not easy growing up. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel sad, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. But we should take a look back on all the painful things in life with a positive attitude (积极的态度) and we should learn from them. We should realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains (收获)!
Throughout our lives we are going to face many challenges and pains, but we should never let these difficulties keep us from following our dreams. We must overcome them one small step at a time.
As a young girl, my parents asked me to do so many things that I didn’t like. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music and I also hated them. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I now comprehend that my parents and teachers wanted me to have a better life.
We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just part of our life. Think about how we would feel if we had no challenges and lived a life like that. Life would be really boring and meaningless. The future is ours! A little hard work and sweat (汗水) never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps (碰撞) on our road to success, we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!
36. What should we do when we look back on the painful things in life?
A. Feel sorry for them. B. Be afraid of them. C. Pay attention to them. D. Learn from them.
37. How does the writer feel now about what her parents did for her in the past?
A. Surprised. B. Unhappy. C. Thankful. D. Angry.

At the horse fair, there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered 23 pounds to buy me, but they didn’t accept and he walked away. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked away. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said, “I will pay 24 for him.”
“OK,” said the salesman, “He’s a very good horse and if you want a horse for cab (出租马车) work, he’s exactly the one you’re looking for.”
Half an hour later, we left the horse fair and walked along the roads, and finally got to that great city—London. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small, old houses on one side, and stables (马厩) on the other.
My new owner stopped at a house. The door opened, and a young woman, a little girl and boy, came out. They all looked at me. “Is he gentle, Father?” “Yes, Dolly, just like a baby cat. You can touch him.”
Dolly, the little girl, gave me a gentle touch without fear. It felt good! Then they led me into a comfortable, clean stable, with lots of dry straw, and after a delicious meal, I lay down to sleep.

With a long history, China has plenty of traditional cultural objects. Among them, the one that I’m most interested in is the oil-paper umbrella. The oil-paper umbrella can date back to the Spring and Autumn Period. It is said that the wife of Lu Ban, a famous carpenter (木匠), invented it. Lu Ban used to work in the open air. When it rained, he often got wet, so his wife created the umbrella for him. From then on, this kind of umbrella was popular among the rich families.
In the Tang and Song Periods, the oil-paper umbrellas become popular among common people. The poets started writing poems and the artists painted on them. The umbrellas always had pictures like flowers and birds. At the same time, they spread to other Asian countries.
Nowadays, few people use oil-paper umbrellas in their daily life. However, some shops still sell these umbrellas, which appear at many special situations. For example, red ones are always seen at Chinese weddings (中式婚礼) to wish for a happy life and purple ones are preferred by the elderly with hopes of a long life.
In 2008, the art was listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). More and more people hope to learn and protect the traditional art.
46. The oil-paper umbrella was invented by Lu Ban himself.
47. The oil-paper umbrella got popular among the rich families at first.

Wildlife workers in Florida are feeding manatees (海牛) to keep them from starving. ____51____ So far, the rescue workers have already given out tons of lettuce.
Manatees are huge sea mammals that can be as long as 4 metres when they are mature.____52____ In spite of their size, manatees only eat plants that live in the sea. That’s one reason why they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. They spend most of their time in warm and shallow water looking for food.
But Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals since 1967. Most threats to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems facing the creatures is boats. Manatees are curious and fairly slow, which has led to thousands of manatees being injured or killed.
____53____ At one point, there were only about 2,000 manatees left in Florida. But by 2016, there were roughly 8,800 manatees.
But now manatees are facing a new challenge: They can’t get enough to eat. Many of the beds of seagrass that manatees depend upon have been killed by man-caused pollution. Seagrass began to disappear around 2011. Warming seas with polluted water have allowed the growth of a great amount of algae (海藻) on the ocean’s surface. ____54____
In 2021, more than one thousand manatees died from starving.____55____ Many of the manatees that remain are so thin that their ribs can be seen. Often they have trouble swimming.
So in December 2021, wildlife experts came up with a plan to get emergency food for the manatees. They decided to feed them green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. Now Florida is working to help restore seagrass beds. But that will take time.

①Journey to the West was “hot” again last year. The Chinese video game Black Myth: Wukong made the classic story Journey to the West popular around the world in 2024. In fact, people around the world have loved the story of the monkey Sun Wukong (Monkey King) for a long time.
②British sinologist (汉学家) Arthur Waley brought the story to many English people in the 1940s. Later, Japan showed Sun Wukong to the world through a TV show Saiyuki in the 1970 and 80s. And many more works followed.
③But what makes this story so popular around the world? People everywhere can understand Sun Wukong, who breaks the rules of Heaven and tries to get free from the hand of the great Buddha (佛). As the writer Li Tianfei told China Daily, the experience of Sun Wukong and his friends is more than a Chinese classical story. “At its heart, Journey to the West is about growing up and being free,” Li said.
④Sun Wukong’s journey is a lot like the stories of heroes in Western cultures, such as Spiderman from Western classical stories. These stories show heroes who might make mistakes but become better over time, just like today’s superheroes. What’s more, before Superheroes appeared, Sun Wukong knew that people with power should help others.
⑤Sun Wukong’s story never gets old because everyone can understand it. His story shows us about being brave and doing the right things—things all people understand and love to see. This is why people all over the world like to create new stories about Sun Wukong. Now, through games, books and TV, young people still love the Monkey King. After all, everyone loves a hero who isn’t afraid to fight for what’s right!

A. Surprised. B. Unhappy. C. Thankful. D. Angry.
38. Which of the following is WRONG according to the text?
A. Growing pains are part of our life.
B. Our growing pains will finally turn into growing gains.
C. Life without challenges is boring and meaningless.
D. Successful people never experience growing pains.
39. What does the underlined word “comprehend” probably mean?

40. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Growing up Is a Real Pain B. Growing Up Is Quite Hard
C. Growing Pains Are Challenges D. Growing Pains Are Growing Gains

I am Black Beauty. I think a horse fair was an interesting place. There was always a lot to see. There were young horses from the country and many beautiful horses too. But there were also a lot of poor, thin horses, tired from hard work. I was very sad to see them.
Dolly the little girl, gave me a gentle touch without fear.
