根据Step 3: Meet the deadline下的“The deadline to enter the contest is November 13.(参加比赛的截止日期是11月13日)”可知,截止日期是11月13日,所以只有11月12日可以提交作品。故选B项。

When I read the novel Journey to the West during my childhood, the character I hated most was the monk Xuanzang, not only because he was weak and talked on and on, but because even as a so-called “enlightened monk”, he surprisingly took control of the pain and joy of the Monkey King who was the hero in my heart. I hated the Gold Hoop on the head of the monkey king so much.
However, as I have grown up, I have gradually realized that everyone of us is a Monkey King while the various rules of life are the invisible incantations (咒语) of the Gold Hoop. We can’t make a good living without them.
Before I went to the US, I believed that high school here would be paradise. Here, I could lead a life without as many rules as I had in China. But the moment I arrived, I found out that I was totally wrong.
There were all the new rules to learn. Our Honor Code forbids drinking alcohol and cheating on exams or homework. Anyone who breaks the code can be expelled. In addition, we have the thick Blue Book, which regulates our behavior in life, schoolwork as well as sports.
It is easy to ignore these rules, but once you violate one, you get a point on your demerit record. If you get five points in a week, you have to spend your beautiful Saturday night studying in the classroom under the watch of a teacher. Fortunately, I haven’t gotten any demerit points so far, although I do make lots of small mistakes.
Actually, I now think that the existence of the invisible incantations of the “Gold Hoop” is not such a bad thing. As the saying goes, “only the fittest will survive”, so we must learn to get used to the various rules of our societies.
4. Why did the writer hate the monk Xuanzang most as a child?
A. Because he hated the Gold Hoop so much.
B. Because he was a so-called “enlightened” monk.
C. Because he was weak and curious about everything.
D. Because he controlled the Monkey King with the Gold Hoop.
5. What’s the author’s attitude towards rules of life as he grew up?
A. People who follow them can be expelled.
B. They are easy to ignore.
C. People can’t lead a good life without them.
D. They regulate our behavior in life
6. The underlined word “violate” in the last Paragraph but one most probably means ________.
A. Break B. Illustrate C. Respect D. Replace
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Look before you leap.
B. A good beginning is half done.
C. A bird in hand is worth than two in the bush.
D. Nothing can be accomplished without norms or standards.
D 5. C 6. A 7. D

根据第一段“When I read the novel Journey to the West during my childhood, the character I hated most was the monk Xuanzang, not only because he was weak and talked on and on, but because even as a so-called “enlightened monk”, he surprisingly took control of the pain and joy of the Monkey King who was the hero in my heart. I hated the Gold Hoop on the head of the monkey king so much.(小时候读《西游记》时,我最讨厌的人物是唐僧玄奘,不仅因为他软弱,说个没完没了,还因为即使作为一个所谓的“高僧”,他也出人意料地控制了我心目中的英雄孙悟空的痛苦和快乐。我非常讨厌孙悟空头上的金箍)”可知,因为玄奘用金箍控制了孙悟空,所以作者小时候最讨厌他。故选D项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“However, as I have grown up, I have gradually realized that everyone of us is a Monkey King while the various rules of life are the invisible incantations (咒语) of the Gold Hoop. We can’t make a good living without them.(然而,随着我的成长,我逐渐意识到我们每个人都是一个孙悟空,而生活的各种规则是金环的隐形咒语。没有他们,我们就不能过上好日子)”可知,作者长大后对生活规则的态度是:没有规则,人们就无法过上美好的生活。故选C项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“you get a point on your demerit record. If you get five points in a week, you have to spend your beautiful Saturday night studying in the classroom under the watch of a teacher. Fortunately, I haven’t gotten any demerit points so far, although I do make lots of small mistakes.(你的记过记录上就会有一分。如果你在一周内得了五分,你就得在老师的监视下在教室里度过你美丽的周六晚上。幸运的是,到目前为止,我还没有得到任何扣分,尽管我确实犯了很多小错误)”可知,犯错才会记一分,且不是小错误,推知应是违反校规,所以violate应是“违反”之意,和A项“Break”意思相近。故选A项。
根据第二段“However, as I have grown up, I have gradually realized that everyone of us is a Monkey King while the various rules of life are the invisible incantations (咒语) of the Gold Hoop. We can’t make a good living without them.(然而,随着我的成长,我逐渐意识到我们每个人都是一个孙悟空,而生活的各种规则是金环的隐形咒语。没有他们,我们就不能过上好日子)”以及最后一段“Actually, I now think that the existence of the invisible incantations of the “Gold Hoop” is not such a bad thing. As the saying goes, “only the fittest will survive”, so we must learn to get used to the various rules of our societies.(实际上,我现在觉得,生活中那些无形如‘金箍咒’般的规则的存在,并非什么坏事。俗话说得好,‘适者生存’,所以我们必须学会适应社会中的各种规则)”可知,本文主要讲述了没有规范和标准,什么事情也做不成;从文章我们能够学到的是没有规矩不成方圆(Nothing can be accomplished without norms or standards.)。故选D项。

Roman art dating back thousands of years was recently uncovered in the ancient ruins of Pompeii, Italy. The city was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the year 79, and much of it was preserved under thick layers of stone and ash. Archaeologists have been working to dig out the remains of Pompeii for hundreds of years. UNESCO named it a World Heritage site and said it “provides a complete picture of an ancient Roman city.”
The recent discovery is the most important in many years. Experts unearthed a grand house, where the three letters- “ARV” were carved on the walls. This suggested that the home belonged to Aulus Rustius Verus, a wealthy Pompeii politician. The team found a large dining hall that was nearly undestroyed. It is about 50 feet long and 20 feet wide and has a mosaic floor made up of more than a million white tiles (瓷砖). Its walls were painted black and decorated with frescoes, artwork made using an old technique of painting with watercolors on wet plaster (灰泥). The frescoes describe characters from Greek mythology and tell stories of heroism and fate. The hall would have been an elegant setting for entertaining guests, the archaeologists said. As people dined in the room, flickering candlelight would have made the figures seem to move.
“Pompeii is truly a treasure chest,” Italy’s culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, said of the recent discovery. “Every time we dig, we find something beautiful and significant.”

In an ever more digital world, pen and paper are increasingly getting replaced with screens and keyboards in classrooms. Now, a new study has investigated neural (神经的) networks in the brain during handwriting and typewriting. The researchers showed that connectivity between different brain regions is more elaborate (复杂的) when letters are formed by hand. This improved brain connectivity, which is important to memory building and information encoding, may indicate that writing by hand supports learning.
To find out if the process of forming letters by hand resulted in greater brain connectivity, researchers in Norway now investigated the underlying neural networks involved in both modes of writing. When writing, they used a digital pen to write in cursive directly on a touchscreen. When typing they used a single finger to press keys on a keyboard. High-density EEGs, which measure electrical activity in the brain using 256 small sensors sewn in a net and placed over the head, were recorded for five seconds for every prompt
The result shows connectivity of different brain regions increased when participants wrote by hand, but not when they typed. The simple movement of hitting a key with the same finger repeatedly is less stimulating (刺激) for the brain. “This also explains why children who have learned to write and read on a tablet, can have difficulty telling differences between letters that are mirror images of each other, such as ‘b’ and ‘d’. They literally haven’ t felt with their bodies what it feels like to produce those letters,” Meer said.
Their findings demonstrate the need to give students the opportunity to use pens, rather than having them type during class, the researchers said. Guidelines to ensure that students receive at least a minimum of handwriting instruction could be an adequate step. For example, cursive writing training has been re-implemented in many US states at the beginning of the year.
12. Which statement is true about the new study according to paragraph 1?
A. Neural networks in the brain grow during writing.
B. Brain connectivity is only important to memory building.
C. Keyboards have replaced the pens and paper in classrooms.
D. Hand writing improves brain connectivity which supports learning.
13. How did the researchers do the experiment?
A. By analysing the process of forming letters.
B. By doing the questionnaire among the students.
C. By comparing neural networks in two writing ways.
D. By using a digital pen to write on a touchscreen.
14. Why does the author quote Meer’s saying?
A. To show hitting a key stimulates the brain.
B. To further prove the importance of handwriting.
C. To highlight children have difficulty in telling ‘b’ from ‘d’.
D. To explain children feel with their bodies during producing letters.
15. Which structure is right about the text?
A. Result-Process-Difference-Suggestion
B. Background-Process-Result-Demonstration
C. Conclusion-Investigation-Result-Demonstration
D. Introduction-Research Method-Result-Recommendation
D 13. C 14. B 15. D

根据第三段 “The simple movement of hitting a key with the same finger repeatedly is less stimulating (刺激) for the brain. “This also explains why children who have learned to write and read on a tablet, can have difficulty telling differences between letters that are mirror images of each other, such as ‘b’ and ‘d’. They literally haven’ t felt with their bodies what it feels like to produce those letters,” Meer said.(用同一根手指反复按键的简单动作对大脑的刺激较小。

Anthony was a fifth-grade student in the Albany Elementary School which had a rich history and a good reputation across the state, thanks to its devotion to providing high-quality education and shaping generations of Albany’s children.
Frankly speaking, Anthony was neither the brightest student, nor the most athletic in the school, but he had a real enthusiasm for learning and always approached his studies with strong curiosity. Every morning, he would greet the school day with a wide and genuine smile that brightened the entire classroom. His classmates couldn’t help but be influenced by his optimistic attitude towards life, which helped him become very popular and also form many friendships at school.
One unexpected day the teacher announced a surprise test. It was a subject that Anthony had struggled with. Even more unfortunately, he was not fully prepared. As the papers were handed out, Anthony’s heart sank, and his mind went blank, with a wave of anxiety and nervousness flooding over him. He looked around, hoping for some comfort and encouragement, but all he saw were the focused expressions of his classmates. The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the occasional sound of turning papers.
As he began to write, Anthony realized that he knew only a fraction (小部分) of the answers. His mind raced, trying to recall anything that might help him, but in vain (徒劳的). Obviously, he was lost.
Just then, a piece of paper flew across the room and landed on Anthony’s desk.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 1
It was a note from one of his friends, offering him the answers. Anthony recognized the handwriting instantly — it was from his best friend, Mike. His heart pounded as he stared at the neatly written solutions. A part of him longed to copy them and avoid embarrassment, but memories of his teacher emphasizing honesty flashed through his mind. He glanced at Mike, who gave him an encouraging nod. However, Anthony recalled how his parents always told him that true success came from hard work, not shortcuts. The conflict within him grew fiercer.
Para. 2
With a deep breath, Anthony picked up the note and slowly tore it into pieces. He raised his hand and quietly informed the teacher about the incident. Though his voice trembled, he felt a wave of relief. To his surprise, the teacher praised his integrity and allowed him extra time to complete the test. Anthony answered the remaining questions calmly, doing his best. When the results came out, he scored lower than usual but earned everyone’s respect. That day, he learned that courage and honesty were far more valuable than perfect grades.

However as I have grown up, I have gradually realized that everyone of us is a Monkey King while the various rules of life are the invisible incantations (咒语) of the Gold Hoop.
C
8 What do we know about Pompeii city?
A. It is where some Roman art works were recently unearthed.
B Its destruction in 79 BC was due to a volcanic eruption.
C. It is not on the World Heritage site list.
D. It is a modern Italian city.
9. What is the new discovery about?
A. A world heritage site named by UNESCO in Pompeii.
B. An ancient wealthy politician’s home in Pompeii, Italy
C. Pompeii city destroyed by a volcanic eruption.
D. Walls in a dining hall decorated with frescoes.
10. What is fresco according to paragraph 2?
A. It is a kind of artwork painted on the mosaic wall.
B. Its content describes characters from Roman mythology.
C. It is a sort of painting skill using watercolors on wet plaster.
D. It is a type of painting applying ancient skills of using watercolors.
11. Where can we find this text?
A. In a magazine B. In an advertisement C. In a brochure D. In an encyclopedia

One unexpected day, the teacher announced a surprise test.
