As we all know, diets which are high in pork, beef, chicken, fish, sugar, noodles and even white rice, are bad for one's health. This causes diseases in almost every organs, but especially it effects two of the most important ones, the heart and the brain. If people compare these problems with the good health condition, they may prefer good Chinese food. The cook goes out every day to buy great-tasting and fresh vegetables, then cooks them for just a few minutes to keep their nutritional (营养) value, and afterwards serves them, in a most artistic and polite fashion. Please remember your traditional ways of eating, they are far better to those of the West. Certainly fast food makes lots of money, but who wants to fill the pockets of a foreign food that is bad for the health of the Chinese people? Western restaurants are clean and tastefully decorated (装修). Moreover, these restaurants also have “good service and an inviting dining atmosphere.” However, Chinese food restaurants could also do like this if they want to organize themselves as Western food restaurants do. These lessons in management and decoration are the only ones that are worth learning from the Western fast food. In other words, only learn the style of the restaurants, not the food or the menus in any way, shape or form. Never let the wish for money destroy the wonderful tradition that the Chinese has formed over the past thousands of years. 31. It is a book that was published in 1939 by American novelist John Steinbeck. The book was so wonderfully written that it won the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize for fiction shortly after its publication. It is read in American high school and college literature classes. Later, it became an American classic. The book mainly describes American farmers of the Dust Bowl in the mid-thirties of the twentieth century. The novel focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their home because of drought, economic difficulties and agricultural industry changes. For their nearly hopeless situation and the terrible oppression, Stein-beck bravely reveals (揭露) the seriousness of the Great Depression (大萧条) and the challenges of migrant farmworkers (移民). We follow the Joad family as they move from city to city, facing all kinds of difficulties. Steinbeck describes man’s inhumanity to man in a masterful way. Migrant farmers are forced to fight against their countrymen just to survive. They are treated like animals by landowners, and there is a clear divide between the rich and the poor. The migrants and poor people are identified (识别的) as the source of evil and suffering. We witness the saving power of family and fellowship. When the Joads meet the Wilsons, they hold together. Through difficulties, they commit to one another. One loss becomes their loss. Their livelihood depends on their union (联盟). Steinbeck shows us the dignity of wrath at every tur. They refuse to be broken by the challenges they face, from some members leaving the family to others dying. The redoubled effects of selfishness (自私) are brought out clearly in this text. We see the greed (贪婪) of people who are only persuaded (说服) by self-interest. As a result of this, thousands of families sink into seriously poverty (贫乏). Steinbeck clearly tells his reason for writing the novel, was to praise union as saving power. However, being popular did not save the book from being banned (被取缔) for certain reasons. Landowners and local businessmen advocated for (提倡) the burning of this book because of the negative results it had on business. 36. Why does the author write this passage? A. To give a general introduction of The Grapes of Wrath. B. To reveal the influence the Great Depression had on people’s lives. C. To explain the writing style of John Steinbeck. D. To praise the book for its business value. 37. Why did landowners and businessmen hate The Grapes of Wrath? A. Because they were published for bringing about the Great Depression. B. Because the book disclosed (透露) their selfishness and greed. C. Because the book brought many families into poverty. D. Because the book had a negative result on their business. 38. 根据文章第一段“It is a book that was published in 1939 by American novelist John Steinbeck…The book mainly describes American farmers of the Dust Bowl in the mid-thirties of the twentieth century.” 故选A。 根据文章最后一段“Landowners and local businessmen advocated for the burning of this book because of the negative results it had on business.” 根据文章第五段“Steinbeck clearly tells his reason for writing the novel, was to praise union as saving power.” 根据文章第二段“Migrant farmers are forced to fight against their countrymen just to survive. They are treated like animals by landowners…” 根据文章第一段“The novel focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their home…” There was ____41____ English speech contest in my school. D Have you read The Grapes of Wrath? A.
