The Grammys celebrate the best in music; but behind every songwriter, performer, and producer that makes it to that stage are music teachers and educators who inspired them from a very young age. That’s why the Grammy Awards also hands out a Special Music Award, which recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to music education.
This year, the award went to Annie Ray, the performing arts department chair and orchestra (管弦乐队) director at Annandale High School in Fairfax County, Virginia—a community with many poor people. With the creation of the Crescendo Orchestra, she works to make music accessible to all students, particularly those with disabilities. Additionally, she created a parent orchestra, in which 200 caregivers learn to play the same instrument as their child every year.
Ray took home both a $ 10, 000 prize and a matching prize for her school’s music program. In an interview following the Merit Award ceremony, Ray credited her pupils for this award. “This is the students’ award,” she said. “I’m just lucky enough to have been a part of their journey and their process and to have been taught by them.”
Now, Ray will use the prize money to buy instruments—something the school has struggled to do. She also plans to create an ongoing scholarship for students who want to become musicians and music educators when they graduate.
For Ray, the moment appears to come full circle, since it was a music teacher who first changed her life at age 5. “The reason I am here is because a teacher changed my life and made me want to be a music educator,” she said. “The work is hard, but it is truly rewarding, and there’s nothing else like it.”

Thanksgiving is a time of year when we get together with our families and celebrate peace over a giant feast including roast turkey and pumpkin pie.
There are many reasons why the pumpkin pie is made for Thanksgiving, one of which is related to the season. For years, animals have been used in the testing of medicine to make sure the products are safe to use for humans. A law that doesn’t require labs to test on animals any more has been signed recently. Before the new law was in place, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required new medicine to be tested on animals before the labs could move on to test on humans. Companies were required to test their products on animals like a monkey or dog. This causes companies to test on tens of thousands of animals every yar. Now the new law lifts the requirement for animal testing.
According to Science, researchers have been wanting to move away from animal testing. Paul Locke, scientist and lawyer at Johns Hopkins University, told the website: “We have many important drugs that have been developed using animal tests. But as we get into some of these more difficult diseases, especially neurological (神经系统的) diseases, the animal models just aren’t serving us as well.”
The chief scientist of the FDA says that they want to try and get rid of (摆脱) all animal testing. “We support other methods that are backed by science and provide the necessary data showing whether products are safe and effective,” Namandjé Bumpus told Science. One of their choices is called “organs-on-chips (器官芯片)”. These are small chips that contain human cells (细胞). The chips are used to test the effects of medicine. They mimic certain human body functions. For example, they are very soft, there can be some kind of blood flow and they are physically active, just as our bodies.
Aysha Akhtar, a neurologist and president and CEO of the Center for Modern Sciences said: “The decision is still up to the FDA to decide whether the method is to be put into practice.” Anyway, Akhtar expects that new methods of testing will be used.

13.Why do researchers want to get rid of animal testing?

二、七选五(河北省唐山市2023-2024学年高一下学期期中)
When my three-year-old cousin didn’t get his way and hit his mother in anger, there were immediate consequences (后果): his father calmly and firmly made it clear that this behaviour was unacceptable, and he had to apologise. Then, he lost the honor of playing with his Christmas toys for the rest of the day. 31 His parents knew that this consequence would have an impact and was something they could carry out straight away.
The most important goal of discipline (管教) is teaching children and teenagers self-management and responsible decision-making. It is not about control but instead using positive discipline. When children know what will happen, they can make choices. Parents benefit, too, from having a plan of how they will respond to specific behaviour rather than reacting in anger.
32 Have a conversation to work through what happened in a particular situation, asking the young person how they made the decision and what the impact of their choices was. Teenagers are often unwilling to talk to parents, facing their parent’s disappointment and requests for explanations. 33 The goal of this difficult conversation is to help the teenagers understand the impact of their behaviour.
Taking responsibility and repairing harm by making changes is a powerful consequence that teaches young people about the impacts of their behaviour on others. If an older child has hurt a friend’s feelings, coaching them in talking it through and apologising. 34
35 And they can finally make wise choices and solve conflicts without force.
A.Sometimes, a discussion is needed.
B.This was a painful experience for the little boy!
C.It can be useless to focus on fixing the problem.
D.Therefore, it is very important that parents stay calm.
E.Typically, consequences can be thought of in three categories.
F.Those who were harmed feel heard, and relationships are repaired.
G.Overall, positive discipline aims to help children become responsible, independent, and kind.

I worked at a coffee shop in a very remote (偏僻的) area. I wasn’t pleased with having to work during New Year’s Eve, but about halfway through my shift (轮班), I saw someone who made me feel grateful that I would at least be able to go home to share the dinner with my family.
It was a cold day. The weather was awful with an icy wind and near-freezing rain. Asllooked out of the store window, I saw a young man walking along the road, expecting to get free rides from the passing cars, There was very little traffic, and the few vehicles passing by were driven by people. who were rushing home and couldn’t be bothered to pick up a stranger. Iexpected the young man to come in to warm up or drink a cup, of hot coffee, but he just kept on walking even though he was trembling (颤抖) in the cold.
I thought about how it felt like to be alone and try to hitch a side (免费搭车) in such bad weather on such a special day, and my heart went out to him. Wherever he was going, it was clear that he stood no chance of making it to his destination in time for the dinner.
I was alone, so I couldn’t leave the store to help out. Then I called my parents. I knew that they were busy preparing the big dinner for the whole family. I explained about the young man and asked them if they could help him out. Without any hesitation, they agreed.
After a short while, I saw my parents’ car. It stopped beside the young man and there was a quick exchange of words. The man nodded his head thankfully, and then the car drove off.
12.What does the new law state?
A.New medicines are to be tested on humans. B.The requirement for animal testing is stopped.
C.The skills of animal testing need to be improved. D.More animals are to be used to test new medicine.
13.Why do researchers want to get rid of animal testing?
A.They think it difficult to find enough animals.
B.Animal testing fails to function well sometimes.
C.Some difficult illnesses get worse after animal testing.
D.The medicine is too expensive to be tested on animals.
14.What does the underlined word “mimic” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Put an end to. B.Keep away from. C.Make up for. D.Model themselves on.
15.What is Akhtar’s attitude to new testing methods?
A.Doubtful. B.Disapproving. C.Positive. D.Uninterested.

I saw the look of surprise, disbelief, gratitude, and pleasure that I would never forget appeared on the face of the young man.

【答案】
Then, making his way to the store, the young man came in and asked if he could stay for a few minutes. And naturally I agreed. He told me “angels” had come out of nowhere and given him Thanksgiving dinner, then just driven off without telling him who they were or how they had known about him. He did not have any money to buy food, so the hot meal was especially meaningful. I just smiled, offered coffee and juice to go with the meal, and watched him enjoy them.
I really thanked my parents that day. Although they were busy with their preparations for Thanksgiving, they stopped their work, packaged dinner and brought it to the man. Sometimes, we’d be willing to help others, but we just can’t leave our work. But my parents were really glad to help the young man despite the terrible weather and their work. What’s more, the young man’s heart felt thanks made each of us feel good about our small parts in helping him.
