5 The Battle of the Windmills
The“giants”
Talking in this way, they came to the top of a small hill.Below
them, they could see thirty or forty windmills. When Don Quixote saw
them,he said to his squire,"Friend Sancho,we are lucky today.There
are thirty or more very large giants.I will fight them immediately, and
kill them,for they are wicked."
"What giants do you mean?"asked Sancho Panza.
“Those you can see there,”answered his master,“with the long
arms. They sometimes have arms six miles long."
“Sir,what are you thinking of?”cried Sancho.“Those are not
giants,but windmills.Their arms,as you call them,are the sails,
which are moved round by the wind."
"You still have a lot to learn about the adventures of knights."said
Don Quixote."They are giants,I tell you.If you are afraid,do not
come. You can pray while I fight this terrible and unfair3 battle."

Don Quixote attacks
Saying this,he rode down the hill, not listening to Sancho's cries.
Sancho was shouting that the giants were really windmills. The knight
rushed on,shouting loudly,"Do not turn and run away, you cowards!
There is only one knight coming to attack you."
Just at that minute there was a wind, and the sails began to turn.
When he saw this,Don Quixote cried,"Ah!Lift your arms!Even if
you had a hundred arms,I would attack you."Then, calling the name of
his lady Dulcinea,he rode at the nearest windmill. His lance went
through the lowest of the four sails, and was broken into pieces. The
sail hit the horse and rider, and sent them rolling across the ground.
“God protect④us!”cried Sancho. He had followed as fast as his
donkey could go.He found his master lying very quietly by the side of
Rozinante,"Sir,did I not tell you that these things are windmills, and
not giants?Anyone whose head was not filled with mad ideas could see
that!”
Don Quixote explains
“Be quiet,.Sancho..”answered Don Quixote,“Do you not know that
in a battle everything may suddenly change?I am sure that the wicked
magician,Friston, who took my books,is the enemy. He has changed
those giants into windmills to stop me winning the fight. But,in the
end,all his wicked plans will fail."
"I hope so."said Sancho, helping his master to rise. The knight then

by the fall.He then rode towards a high place, where the road from

They passed the night in a small wood.Don Quixote pulled a dead
branch from one of the trees, and repaired his broken lance with it.Then
like a true knight,he stayed awake during the night and thought of his
lady,Dulcinea.Sancho had a drink, and then slept all night without
