3 Adventures after Leaving the Inn The cruel farmer After leaving the inn,Don Quixote decided to go home to get some money. He wished also to find a squire before he looked for more adventures. It was now day,and Don Quixote could see a small wood. Suddenly he heard cries for help.“Praise to God!”he said to himself,.“Here is my chance to do my duty②as a knight.”He went into the wood, and there he saw something that filled him with anger.A boy, about fifteen years old,was tied to a tree.It was this boy who was crying so loudly for help.A big man,a farmer perhaps, was beating him cruelly.A horse was tied to a tree not far way,and there was a long lance by the same tree. Don Quixote saw what was happening, and rode towards them, crying,"Wicked Knight! Why do you act so cruelly?Get your horse, and take your lance.I will teach you not to behave like this towards people who are weak and helpless⑤,” When the big man saw Don Quixote with his lance raised,he was very afraid. He answered in a weak voice,"Sir knight, this boy is my ·028· 3离开客栈后的一些冒险 一个残忍的农夫 离开了客栈以后,唐吉诃德决定回家去拿些钱。 他以软弱的声音回答说:“骑士老爷,这个男孩 ·029· Don Quixote servant who looks after my sheep. He is so lazy and careless that every day one of the sheep is lost. When I punish him,he says that it is because I do not pay him. However, that is quite untrue." The man said he had not got so much money with him.But he agreed to go home and pay the boy there. “I cannot go to his home!”cried the boy in fear,“As soon as he is alone with me,he will cut every inch of skin off my body." “You need not be afraid of that,”said Don Quixote.“He will promise,as a knight,to pay you the money, and not hurt you." “But,sir, you are mistaken,”said the boy,“this man is not a knight. He is the rich farmer,Haldudo, who lives at Quintanar." "He can also be a Knight."answered Don Quixote. “True,”said the farmer,.“come with me,boy, and I promise to pay you all the sixty-three reals." “Do not fail⑦to pay him,”said Don Quixote,“If you do not pay him,I shall know about it,because I am Don Quixote de la Mancha, ·030· 唐吉可德 ①look after照顾,关心 是看管我羊群的仆人。 ·031· Don Quixote the defender of the helpless." When Don Quixote had gone When Don Quixote had gone, the farmer turned to the boy and said with a wicked smile,"Come here, boy.I will pay you as the good knight ordered me to."Saying this,he took the boy roughly by the arm and tied him to the tree again. Then he almost beat the life out of his body. When the farmer was quite tired out,he untied the boy and said, "Now go and find your brave defender, and tell him how I have paid you.” While this was happening,Don Quixote went on his way, very satisfied with the beginning of his adventures. After a time,he met a company of men. They were merchants of Toledo, going to Mercia to buy silk. There were six merchants and four servants, riding horses. There were also three mule-drivers,walking and leading their animals. Don Quixote and the merchants Don Quixote thought that this was another chance to show his bravery as a knight. He covered his body with his shield, and held his lance tightly. Then he waited for the knights, for he was sure that they were knights. When they were near enough,he cried out to them, "Stop, everyone of you!Agree that the most beautiful lady in the world is the Queen of La Mancha,Dulcinea del Toboso!" Don Quixote's words made one of the mule-drivers very angry. He decided to answer the fallen knight by beating him.He pulled the lance from Don Quixote's hands and broke it into two halves. He took one half, and began to give the poor knight great blows5.Even with his armour to protect him,his body was black and blue all over. 她可能又 ①gy'Agl/a. ④fault/f:t/n. 的 ·035· Don Quixote The mule-driver did this until both halves of the lance were completely broken. But nothing could stop the brave knight from speaking. He continued shouting wildly at the robbers-as he now thought they were. At last, the mule-driver was tired, and they all rode away. They left the unlucky knight on the ground. When they had gone,he tried again to rise.He failed, but his heart was not sad.In his imagination he was a brave knight, lying hurt after a great battle. Don Quixote returns home Two days had now passed since Don Quixote had left his home. His niece and his servant were becoming very worried about him. They knew he wished to be a knight-errant,and now they were afraid he had begun. On the evening of the second day, when he was beaten by the mule- driver, they went to Pero Perez, the village priest. They also visited a man called Nicholas, who was a barber Both these men were good friends of Don Quixote. The servant described how Don Quixote had changed after reading books of chivalry. The niece talked about her uncle's behaviour when he was excited by his reading. When she had finished her story she said,"I blame myself for not telling you my uncle was mad.It is my fault that we did not burn the books.” At this moment they heard a loud voice calling in the street,"Open to Sir Baldwin and the Prince of Mantua I am brought here badly hurt." They hurried to open the door, and saw a strange sight.Don Quixote was sitting on a donkey whose head was held by a man of the village. Dcompletely /kam'pli:th/ad. 他 ②continue/kan'tnju:/. ⑤describe/d'skraib/.
