CHAPTER 17 Phoebus,meanwhile,was not dead.Men of that kind are hard to kill. "Only look,fair cousin,"said Fleur-de-Lys sharply to the Captain, “'tis that Bohemian hussy③with the goat.” As she thus spoke she turned round toward Phoebus.His eyes were fixed on the cart.He was unusually pale. He was stepping back to return to the room. “What ails you?"”said she to Phoebus,“One would suppose that the sight of this creature had given you a shock." "Me!Not the least in the world!"stammered Phoebus,with a forced grin. “Then stay!”rejoined she imperiously,“And let us look on till all is over..” The chanting in the church ceased.A large gold crucifix and a file of tapers began to move in the dusk.But her eyes were riveted on him who walked at its head immediately after the hearer of the crucifix. “Ohl”she muttered to herself,shuddering,“There he is again！The priest!" It was actually the Archdeacon. At that moment the wretched Archdeacon raised his head mechanically,and saw on the other side of the Place the Captain standing in the balcony with Fleur-de-Lys.He shuddered,passed his hand over his eyes,looked again,muttered a malediction,and all his features were violently contracted. “Well then,diel”said he..“No one shall have thee.”Then,lifting his hand over the Egyptian,he pronounced these words in a loud and solemn tone:"I nunc anima aneeps,et sit tibi Deus misericors!" It was the signal given by the priest to the executioner. The unfortunate creature,at the moment for reascending the fatal cart and setting out on her last stage,was probably seized by some keen repining after life.She raised her dry but inflamed eyes toward heaven,toward the sun. Charmolue stood stupefied-so did the executioners and the whole escort.Within the walls of Notre-Dame the prisoner was secure from molestation3.The cathedral was a place of refuge.Human justice dared not cross its threshold. Quasimodo paused under the great porch,he was beautiful-he, that orphan,that foundling,that outcast;he felt himself august and strong;he looked in the face that society from which he was banished, and from which he had made so signal a conquest;the human justice from which he had snatched its victim;those judges,those executioners,all that force of the King's,which he,the meanest of the mean,had foiled with the force of God! And then,how touching was that protection afforded by a being so deformed to a being so unfortunate as the girl condemned to die and saved by Quasimodo!It was the two extreme miseries of nature and society meeting and asisting each other.
