Kyron checked his pack to ensure he had everything needed for the day. After twelve years on the avalanche (雪崩) control team, he realized the importance of keeping the public safe. He called his teammate, Cannor, and they met at the mountain.
The snowpack had become unstable (不稳定的) recently, and it was their job to make it safe enough for skiers. As they made their way up the mountain, they admired the smooth snow under the winter sun. Upon reaching the top, they tied safety ropes and snow anchors (锚), then began digging a hole to examine the snow.
Kyron noticed thin ice mixed with powdery (粉末的) snow. “It’ s pretty unstable,” he said. “Let’s use the fuel-air explosives (油气炸药),” Cannor agreed.
As the men set about their work, Kyron felt he couldn’t move freely. His safety rope was caught on some rocks above him. Kyron pulled at the rope but it would not move. So he untied himself from it to finish his job.As he worked, he moved into an area of sugar snow, which is unstable like powdered sugar. Suddenly, the snow gave way under his feet. Avalanche!
Without his safety rope to stop him, Kyron started falling down the mountainside like a helpless puppet (木偶). Kyron thought of his wife and daughter. Would he ever see them again? And then all of a sudden it was over. He knew his right arm was badly broken because of the pain. Lying in the darkness, Kyron wondered how deeply he was buried.
He guessed it could not be by much, as he could hear the sound of his partner, Cannor, calling out his name. Polar bears live in the places where temperatures can drop below - 30℃ in winter. Even though it’s very cold, their fur (软毛) usually seems to be free from ice. A new study has found that the secret to their ice-free fur is that it is covered in grease (油脂).
A team of researchers studied hairs from six polar bears living in the wild. The hairs were covered in a type of grease known as sebum. The team washed some of the hairs so they could test whether ice was more likely (可能的) to stick to non-greasy fur.
They also tested how well ice stuck to greasy human hair. To provide the material for the test, one of the researchers didn’t wash his hair for six days, and then cut it off and handed it over. Then the team found that the ice didn‘t really stick to the unwashed polar bear hair. However, it stuck very easily to the washed polar bear hair and the greasy human hair.
To understand why there was such a difference, the scientists studied the polar bear sebum. Interestingly, they found in the sebum there isn’t any squalene, an ingredient (成分) of grease on human hair and on the fair of some animals. The polar bear’s type of grease is special and stops ice sticking to it.
Scientists are hoping the results could help make a coating that could repel ice on certain products, such as food packaging or clothing. At the moment, lots of companies use a coating called PFAS. Unluckily, PFAS breaks down very slowly in the environment and can be harmful to wildlife. Understanding polar bear grease could help scientists provide an environ-mentally friendly solution that could take the place of this harmful material.

Thanks to technology, scientists can usually explain things that seem mysterious (神秘的) at first. ___16___ Just outside Czarnowo, Poland, there is a mystery from the 20th century that still isn’t solved. It’s called theCrooked (弯曲的) Forest, planted around 1930, and has about 400 pine trees. There is nothing unusual about forests such as this in this area. ___17___ The trees in the Crooked Forest have an unusual C-shape at the base of their trunks (树干) and most of these shapes face north.
Many people have guessed why the trees look this way. ___18___ One idea is that this area has a special type of gravity (重力) that made the trees grow strangely. However, scientists don’t believe this because gravity pulls things down, not sideways. They also think it didn’t happen naturally because the trees are too evenly curved (均匀地弯曲).
A more likely idea is that the environment caused the trees to bend.___19___ When the trees were young, the snow might have weighed them down, making them bend and then grow up toward the light. However, this doesn’t explain why only the trees in the Crooked Forest are curved, while those nearby grew straight.
Another idea is that people might have curved the trees on purpose.Farmers could have done this to get specially-shaped wood for furniture or ships. ___20___ Native Americans, for example, did this to mark paths, so they knew where they were and which way to go.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使短文意思通顺、内容完整。
A. Some ideas are highly unlikely, but others make more sense.
B. Polish winters can be harsh (恶劣的) with heavy snow.
C. However, in one forest in a small corner of western Poland, this hasn’t been the case.
D. But what is strange is how these trees have grown.
E. There are also other reasons why people bend (弯曲) trees into shapes.

根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
11. What is the primary reason polar bears’ fur remains ice-free?
A. Their fur is very thick. B. They live in warm areas.
C. They use breath to warm the fur. D. It is covered in grease.
12. What type of grease was found on polar bear hairs?
A. Cooking oil. B. Squalene. C. Sebum. D. PFAS.
13. What did the researchers find about ice sticking to different types of hair?
A. Ice does not stick to any type of hair.
B Ice stuck easily to unwashed polar bear hair.
C. Ice did not stick to unwashed polar bear hair.
D. Ice only sticks to washed human hair.
14. What does the underlined word “repel” mean in the text?
A. To draw something towards it.
B. To hold onto something without letting go.
C. To take in something completely.
D. To keep something from coming close.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Life of Polar Bears in Winter.
