Hello everyone. I know most of you want to be singers, but I’m afraid to say it’s all hard work. However, the rewards are beyond anything else, so it’s a fair deal. If you have got a good voice then treasure it. Don’t be anxious. If it does get hurt, it’s impressive how it'll recover. The important thing is to use it. Get out the campus and take every chance you can to sing in public. This experience will also help to feed and build your ambition to go on to be better. Singing on stage to an appreciative audience is as good as life gets. And for those who don’t like public performance, if you’ve got a good voice, then maybe you'll be like my friend Diana. Although she got over most of her anxiety about performing in public a few years ago, she still prefers studio singing, performing directly for CDs and so on. Nobody really sees her outside her home and the studio even warming up her voice for a recording performance is something she does in private. Making noises while sitting in her car outside the studio building. I think she’s alarmed a few passers-by in her time.

Mary Dickins had been a member of the audience at poetry nights before and knew “the poetry clap”. She made a polite tapping of fingers. But when she made her debut (首次演出) as a performer at the age of 62 at the legendary Bang Said the Gun night in south London, she said, “It was so wild — like nothing I had ever seen before.” The audience stamped their feet and shook shakers. “It felt transformative. I thought, ‘I’ve got to have more of this,’ ” Dickins said. Becoming a performance poet has given her a place on a stage of her own making.
All her life she has written is mostly without being seen or heard. Her mother died when she was nine, and, after she went into a care home at 13, Dickins’ writing stayed in notebooks. Really, she says, a lot of her adult life has been about getting over childhood shyness. At university — she studied education — she met her husband of 40 years, but in three years of seminars she did not say a word. Some of these results from her years at the children’s home. She says, “It gave me a sense of what it’s like to be excluded. I never fitted in anywhere.”
After she graduated, she discovered that she loved working with people with learning disabilities. She became an expert in inclusive education. “That was my niche (称心的职业),” she says. She published books and returned to the University of North London as a senior lecturer in early childhood studies.
Dickins now sees that in adulthood she has been giving herself permission to be silly. “The sillier I allow myself to be, the better the writing is,” she says. Her observations are humorous.
“Putting things into words and giving shape to your emotions is an important part of coming to terms with the things that happen in life,” she says.
Does she still feel like an outsider?
“I think I’ve made it into a virtue I celebrate the fact that I don’t fit into a box. Finally! You have to wait till you’re 62 to feel confident!” she says. “But I have a sense of who I am and I’m proud of it. I wouldn’t be anyone else now — and it took me a long time to say that.”
24. How did Dickins feel about her debut?
A. Nervous. B. Anxious. C. Encouraged. D. Relieved.
25. Why was Dickins lacking in a sense of belonging?
A. Her early stay at the care home.
B. Her inexperienced writing skills.
C. Her struggle with her university studies.
D. Her poor relationship with her husband.
26. How does writing benefit Dickins?
A. It helps her land a good job.
B. It develops her sense of humor.
C. It makes her overcome her learning disabilities.
D. It enables her to get on well with her life.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Mary Dickins’ First Performance
B. Mary Dickins’ New Start after 60
C. Mary Dickins’ Troubled Writing Career
D. Mary Dickins’ Influence on Performance Poets
C 25. A 26. D 27. B
根据第一段的“But when she made her debut (首次演出) as a performer at the age of 62 at the legendary Bang Said the Gun night in south London, she said, “It was so wild — like nothing I had ever seen before.”(但当她62岁时在伦敦南部传奇的“枪炮之夜”上首次以表演者的身份亮相时,她说:“这太疯狂了,我以前从未见过。”)”以及““It felt transformative. I thought, ‘I’ve got to have more of this,’ ” Dickins said. Becoming a performance poet has given her a place on a stage of her own making.(“我觉得这是一种变革。我想,‘我得多点这样的表演,’” Dickins说。成为一名表演诗人让她在自己创造的舞台上占据了一席之地)”可知,Dickins首次作为表演者登台时观众的反应很疯狂,这种体验是她从未经历过的,但她很喜欢,成为表演诗人让Dickins在舞台上有了自己的一席之地。由此推知,当Dickins第一次上台表演诗歌后,观众的反应使她大受鼓舞。故选C。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“At university — she studied education — she met her husband of 40 years, but in three years of seminars she did not say a word. I never fitted in anywhere.”(在大学里,她学习教育,遇到了相恋40年的丈夫,但在三年的研讨会上,她一句话也没说。其中一些是她在儿童之家工作多年的结果。她说:“这让我明白了被排斥的感觉。我从来没有融入过任何地方。”)”可知,Dickins在儿童之家生活多年的经历让她觉得自己被排斥在外,在任何地方都格格不入,很没有归属感。故选A。
根据倒数第三段““Putting things into words and giving shape to your emotions is an important part of coming to terms with the things that happen in life,” she says.(她说:“把事情用语言表达出来,塑造你的情绪,是接受生活中发生的事情的重要组成部分。”)”

You have to wait till you’re 62 to feel confident!” she says. “But I have a sense of who I am and I’m proud of it. I wouldn’t be anyone else now — and it took me a long time to say that.”(最后你必须等到62岁才有自信!”

Going against the tide of flocking to well-known tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser-known attractions. Reverse tourism (逆向旅游) has appeared as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
According to data from an online travel agency, the number of rooms booked at hotels in less-traveled cities during the holiday was up 30 percent year-on-year. Bookings for four-star or five-star hotels in less-traveled places all increased ten times at a minimum. Some lesser-known scenic spots posted double-digit (两位数的) growth during the holiday. Baimaiquan Park in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, received 52,100 visits in the seven days, up to 15.78 percent year-over-year.
Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations. In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as “commercial” as developed ones and are able to offer more actual experiences and natural encounters.
Essentially speaking, total relaxation is becoming a real expectation for many people when they travel. Changes in demand may be the fundamental reason for the popularity of reverse tourism. COVID-19 is another key factor fueling reverse tourism. As preventive measures continue, traveling has an unpredictable quality. Travelers have thus become more cautious and tend to choose local attractions or places with fewer tourists.
“The rise of reverse tourism is not a bad thing,” said Zhengzhou Daily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market. More importantly, it noted, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves instead of resting on their past honor.
Jiang Han, a senior researcher, said that reverse tourism will become one of the future directions for the market. To give a real boost to the tourism market, Jiang suggested that more efforts be made to tap the potential of underestimated, lesser-known destinations. It is necessary to dig deeper into the local customs and highlight the local characteristics to improve the quality of local tourism.
28. What do the statistics in paragraph 2 tell us?
A. The popularity of travel agency in China.
B. The high income of hotels during holidays.
C. The contributions of tourism to the economy.
D. The increasing trend of reverse tourism in China.
29. What may be the root cause of the rise of reverse tourism?
A. The impact of COVID-19.
B. Holidaymakers’ changing needs for travel.
C. The lower cost of heading to less-traveled places.
D. The lack of innovative improvements in famous attractions.
30. What does Zhengzhou Daily think of reverse tourism?
A. It will drop with the recovery of economy.
B. It benefits both tourists and the tourism market.
C. It is beneficial to spread local culture to tourists.
D. It blocks the development of some popular resorts.
31. What is Jiang Han’s advice on developing the tourism market?
A. Upgrading the supporting facilities in tourist areas.
B. Improving the management rules of tourist attractions further.
C. Exploring the potential and features of lesser-known attractions.
D. Promoting the local characteristics of China through online media.
D 29. B 30. B 31. C

Scientists have shown how plants can protect themselves against genetic (基因的) damage caused by environmental stresses. The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism (机制) that spells cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA.
Plants have small populations of stem cells (干细胞) at the tips of their roots and shoots, which enable them to continuously grow and produce new tissues throughout their lifetime. These stem cells serve as ancestors for plant tissues and organs. However, any genetic faults present in the stem cells will continue to exist and be passed on permanently throughout the plant’s life, which could last thousands of years.
Given the critical role of stem cells and their exposure to potentially dangerous environments at the growing tips of roots and shoots, safeguards are necessary to prevent stem cell faults from becoming fixed. Researchers Nick Fulcher and Robert Sablowski, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, aimed to uncover these protective mechanisms. Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells.
When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die, preventing the propagation of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues. This process has similarities to the safeguard mechanism found in animal cells, which has been broadly studied due to its relevance in preventing cancer.
The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development. It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change.
32. What is the function of the in-built mechanism in plants?
A. To produce more roots and shoots. B. To increase the overall lifetime of the plant.
C. To enhance plant growth and nutrient intake. D. To stop genetic faults in stem cells passing on.
33. What can we know about stem cells in plants according to the text?
A. They are relatively abundant in quantity. B. They are resistant to environmental stresses.
C. They make quick response to DNA damage. D. They have the ability to repair damaged DNA.
34. What does the underlined word “propagation” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Spread. B. Change. C. Existence. D. Self-repair.
35. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. The way of dealing with climate change on the earth.
B. The significance of identifying the protective system in plants.
C. The method of ensuring plant survival under environmental stress.
D. The urgency of developing plants that can handle environmental stress.
D 33. C 34. A 35. B

上文“Packages must be delivered within 24 hours and meals at a restaurant need to arrive within 30 minutes. ”(包裹必须24小时之内送达,外卖则30分钟内到达。)说明我们变得越来越急躁,没有耐心。与E项“Many people have grown more and more impatient as a result.”(结果许多人变得越来也没有耐心。)
下文“By doing these small things, you’ll develop your patience.”(通过做这些小事,你将培养出耐心。) 与F项“Becoming more patient is a long journey and start it with small steps.”(变得更有耐心是一个漫长的过程,要从小事做起。)
上文“Knowing your triggers(诱因)will help you take better charge of a situation the next time you find yourself impatient.”(知道你的触发因素会帮助你在下次发现自己不耐烦的时候掌控局面。)说明要了解哪些因素会使自己不耐烦,结合下文的例子“maybe you grow impatient when you see a long line at your favorite coffee shop.”(当看到你最喜欢的咖啡店排起了长队时,你可能会不耐烦。)说明了一种使自己不耐烦的具体情形,故D项“Identify the things, places or people that make you impatient.”(确定那些会使你不耐烦的事情,地方和人)符合上下文的句意衔接。故选D项。
上文“For example, wait for your coffee to brew (冲泡) on a weekend morning.”(比如在一个周末的早晨等待你的咖啡冲泡好。)举例说明了一种不急躁,有耐心的情形,与C项“Enjoy such process occasionally rather than rush to do it.”(偶尔享受这样的过程,而不是匆忙地做它。)
上文“If you are stuck in a traffic jam, there’s little you can do to get out of it.”(如果你遇到了交通堵塞,几乎没有办法摆脱它。)说明了一种令人沮丧又无能为力的情形,G项“Instead of getting frustrated, accept your situation and make the best of it.”(与其沮丧,不如接受现状,并充分利用它)说明的是遇到这种情形的应对方法,符合语境。故选G项。

“I think I’ve made it into a virtue. I celebrate the fact that I don’t fit into a box. Finally! You have to wait till you’re 62 to feel confident!” she says. “But I have a sense of who I am and I’m proud of it. I wouldn’t be anyone else now — and it took me a long time to say that.”
24. How did Dickins feel about her debut?
A. Nervous. B. Anxious. C. Encouraged. D. Relieved.
25 Why was Dickins lacking in a sense of belonging?
A. Her early stay at the care home.
B. Her inexperienced writing skills.
C. Her struggle with her university studies.
D. Her poor relationship with her husband.
26. How does writing benefit Dickins?
A. It helps her land a good job.
B. It develops her sense of humor.
C. It makes her overcome her learning disabilities.
D. It enables her to get on well with her life.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Mary Dickins’ First Performance
B. Mary Dickins’ New Start after 60
C. Mary Dickins’ Troubled Writing Career
D. Mary Dickins’ Influence on Performance Poets

A Upgrading the supporting facilities in tourist areas.
B. Improving the management rules of tourist attractions further.
C. Exploring the potential and features of lesser-known attractions.
D. Promoting the local characteristics of China through online media.

35 What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. The way of dealing with climate change on the earth.
B. The significance of identifying the protective system in plants.
C. The method of ensuring plant survival under environmental stress.
D. The urgency of developing plants that can handle environmental stress.
