After they introduced the young musician, Mr. Patrick Henry Hughes, he was rolled onto the stage in his wheelchair and began to play the piano. His fingers danced across the keys as he made beautiful music. He then began to sing as he played, and it was even more beautiful. For some reason, however, I knew that I was seeing something special. About ten minutes into Patrick’s performance, someone came on the stage and said, “I’d like to share a seven-minute video.” Then the lights went dim.
Patrick Henry Hughes was born with no eyes and a tightening of the joints which left him disabled for life. However, as a child, he was fitted with artificial eyes and placed in a wheelchair. Before his first birthday, he discovered the piano. His mom said, “I could hit any note on the piano, and within one or two tries, he’d get it.” By his second birthday, he could play simple songs as requested. His father was excited. “We might not play baseball, but we can play music together.”
Today, Patrick is a junior. His father attends classes with him and he’s made nearly all A’s. He’s also a part of the marching band. He and his father do it together. They attend all the band practices and performances. His father rolls his son around the field to the cheers of Patrick’s fans.
But it was Patrick’s “attitude of gratitude” that touched my soul deeper. On stage, between songs, he talked to the audience about his life and about how blessed he was. He said, “God made me blind and unable to walk. BIG DEAL! He gave me the ability, the musical gifts I have… the great opportunity to meet new people.”
When his performance was over, Patrick and his father were on the stage together. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered for over five minutes.
41. What can we know from the text?
A. Patrick is now in charge of a marching band.
B. My friends told me the performance would be very special.
C. Patrick showed a gift of music at an early age.
D. Patrick played the piano much better than he sang.
42. According to the text, Patrick’s father ________.
A. taught Patrick to sing and play the piano
B. accompanied him to attend classes and practices
C. expected his son to be a great musician and singer
D. has become the leader of the marching band
43. What made the author most impressed?
A. His attitude of gratitude. B. His working hard.
C. His wonderful performance. D. His unlucky fate.
44. The underlined word “blessed” in Paragraph 5 might be replaced by “________”.
A. unfortunate B. hopeful C. talkative D. lucky
45. The story of Patrick Henry Hughes teaches us to ________.

C
The Yellow River is the cradle (摇篮) of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices set up along the river collect and transmit information to the command center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (管理) is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter (尤指电台或电视信号的发射机). They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the command center for quick response,” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiaoxiong from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans (泄洪计划) in case we need to batten down the hatches,” said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligent systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
46. What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River?
A. To study the wildlife in the Yellow River.
B. To raise public awareness of river protection.
C. To improve flood control and prevention efforts.
D. To provide a virtual reality experience of the river.
47. How do the “smart stones” contribute to the river’s digital governance?
A. They record water quality. B. They enhance the river’s beauty.
C. They monitor and report dike movements. D. They serve as markets for important locations.
48. What is one of the functions of drones in the digital governance of the Yellow River?
A. Providing entertainment for the people living along the river.
B. Collecting data to update a 3D model for flood management.
C. Transporting researchers to remote locations along the river
D. Patrolling and getting first-hand wildlife photos.
49. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. To update the 3D model for accuracy. B. To prepare for a potential flood event.
C. To strengthen the riverbanks and dikes. D. To increase drone monitoring over the river.
50. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. The cultural and historical importance of the Yellow River.
B. The future plans for improving the Yellow River’s construction.
C. The use of smart stones and drones for flood control and monitoring.
D. The development of a digital system for the Yellow River’s management.

第Ⅱ卷
第四部分:写作(共两节,满分30分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
My husband and I travel a lot. We had a horse, a wonderful horse called Dusty. We were out of town when a one-hundred-mile horse race went right past the road in front of my house. My horse decided that she wanted to compete in the race. So she jumped over the fence and left quickly.
The next day my husband and I came home. We found a note on the front door from the police. It said that my horse had gone back to the barn (牲口棚) on the other side of town. She had been born there eighteen years before. So we drove there. It was a lovely old farm. It was owned now by people I didn't know. The new owners were a man, his wife, and their children, two little girls aged seven and five. We saw Dusty was in the barn. When the little girls had gotten up that morning, they had started screaming, their father said. That was because at the top of the hill, with the sun rising, was this beautiful horse. They attracted her to the barn. They spent the day brushing her and treating her a lot.
The seven-year-old girl turned to me. She said, “Can I ride her before you take her back?” I said yes. And then I went to a local grocery store and bought a bottle of apple juice. When I returned, they told me they had always wished for a horse. But their parents really didn't have the money for one.
I told them I was going to give them Dusty. And I wanted them to make a vow. Someday when they were grown up, they each would find a little girl — a little girl they didn 't know — and give her some very special gift that she had always wanted.

Once, I was invited to see a performance by my friends. Little did I know that I was about to see something I would never forget.
Patrick Henry Hughes was born with no eyes and a tightening of the joints, which left him disabled for life.
