Sixty-year-old Chinese grandmother Su Min didn’t intend to become a hit. She was only trying to escape her husband when she hit the road in 2020 in her white car with a rooftop tent. “I felt like I could finally catch my breath,” she says, recalling the moment she drove away from her old life.
Over the next four years and 180, 000 miles, the video diaries she shared of her adventures earned her millions of supporters online. They called her the “road-tripping auntie” as she turned into a hero for women who felt trapped in their own lives. Her story is now a hit film that was released in September and she became one of the inspiring and influential women of 2024.
If she had to describe what 2024 meant to her in a single word, she says that word would be “freedom”. “As soon as I started driving, she felt freer,” as Su Min told the media over the phone from Shenyang. But it wasn’t until 2024, when she finally applied for divorce (离婚), that she experienced “another kind of freedom”
It took a while to get there: it was a complex process in China and her husband refused to divorce her until she agreed to pay him and she was still waiting for the divorce certificate to come through. She was firm that she didn’t want to look back: “I’m saying goodbye to him.” In January, 2025, she got divorced from her husband.
Although she drives alone, she never seems lonely. She chats with her followers as she films her journey, sharing what she has been cooking, how she spent the previous day and where she’s going next. Her audience travels with her to many places — Xinjiang’s snow-capped mountains, Yunnan’s ancient river towns, sparkling blue lakes, vast grasslands, endless deserts and so on.
4. Why did Su Min become famous online?
A. She starred in her new film. B. Her trip videos inspired her followers.
C. She spent a large sum of money herself. D. She wrote a lot of diaries about her life.
5. What does the word “freedom” mean to Su Min?
A. Driving a car alone. B. Becoming a film actress.
C. Earning money from her videos. D. Freeing herself from her previous life.
6. Why does Su Min “never seem lonely” during her travels?
A. She has a lovely pet. B. She visits crowded cities.
C. She calls her husband daily. D. She talks with her followers.
7. Which of the following best describes Su Min?
A. Dishonest. B. Impatient. C. Adventurous. D. Selfish.

An earthquake killed at least 95 people and left 130 injured after it struck a remote area of southern Tibet near China’s border with Nepal at dawn on Tuesday, Chinese state media reported.
Emergency responders were still assessing (评估) the damage in Dingri county from the quake which struck at 9: 05 a. m. Beijing time, state broadcaster CCTY said. The US Geological Survey put the quake at 7.1 magnitude (震级). Earlier reports from Chinese media graded it as 6.8 magnitude.
The quake brought down more than 1,700 homes in a county that is home to60, 000 people, according to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s Tibet Military Command. The broader Shigatse, at the center of the quake, is the second-largest city in Tibet.
Some 1,500 firefighters were searching the collapsed (倒塌的) buildings for signs of life. Around noon, a child was rescued from a residential building, CCTV reported. Several hundred rescuers who arrived before noon began providing medical aid and relief to homeless residents. Another team, involving hundreds of rescuers and six helicopters, was expected to follow.
Sitting high on the Tibetan plateau at a height of 14,100 feet and 236 miles from the regional capital of Lhasa, Dingri is a major stop on the way to the North Base Camp, where adventurers set out climbing Mount Everest from the north face. The region can be bitterly cold in January, with temperatures often dropping as low as -15℃. Local tourism officials on Tuesday closed the North Base Camp until further notice.
A Dingri resident told local media that the shaking at first felt similar to the massive 2008 earthquake in neighboring Sichuan province that claimed 70,000 lives. Then the second floor of his house caved in and destroyed his car, said a man known only by his family name, Wang.
Past earthquakes that hit mountainous Tibetan regions of western China have drawn public concern about badly constructed homes in relatively poor and lonely villages.

A team of scientists from Columbia University has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool called the General Expression Transformer (GET). This tool can predict how genes inside cells control their behavior. The breakthrough could help researchers better understand diseases like cancer and genetic disorders. It may also lead to new treatments designed for specific cells.
The scientists trained GET using methods similar to those behind ChatGPT, the popular language AI. While ChatGPT learns grammar and language rules, GET has learned how genes work — like turning on or off like a light switch or adjusting activity levels like a volume knob (音量旋钮). This process, called gene expression, decides which proteins a cell makes and in what amounts. Proteins are vital for nearly every body function, from fighting infections to moving and thinking.
Though still new, GET could become as important as AlphaFold2, an AI system that predicts protein shapes. AlphaFold2 won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and has been updated to AlphaFold3. Both gene regulation(studied by GET) and protein structure(studied by AlphaFold) are important to life.
“Biology is becoming a predictive science,” said Raul Rabadan, a study author and director of Columbia’s Program for Mathematical Genomics. “We’ re witnessing a revolution (变革).”
Mark Gerstein, a Yale professor not involved in the study, noted that scientists have spent 15 — 20 years collecting data to predict gene behavior. GET uses this data to analyze genes faster and more effectively. While other scientific groups have trained models using abnormal cells such as those found in different cancers, Xi Fu, a graduate student in Rabadan’s lab, decided to train GET using information from cells in normal human tissue. The training used data from more than 1. 3 million cells, covering 213 different types found in the human body.
In the future, this breakthrough could help doctors design personalized treatments by predicting how a patient’s genes might respond to therapies. While more research is needed, GET represents an exciting step toward unlocking the mysteries of life.
12. How is GET different from ChatGPT?
A. It fights infections. B. It learns how genes work.
C. It won a Nobel Prize. D. It focuses on language rules.
13. What made AlphaFold2 famous?
A. Curing genetic disorders in patients. B. Analyzing data from 1. 3 million cells.
C. Discovering many new types of human cells. D. Winning a Nobel Prize for predicting protein shapes.
14. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of GET?
A. Subjective. B. Unclear. C. Positive. D. Cautious.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. An AI system predicts protein shapes. B. AI model is trained to predict gene activity.
C. Scientists is comparing GET with ChatGPT. D. The AI tool helps cure abnormal human cells.

If you’re a regular user of social media apps — Face-book, Instagram or Threads — that means you’ll no longer see warnings on posts marked as untrue. If you’re worried about accidentally being cheated by posts that aren’t true, make sure to consume information wisely. ____16____
Listen to your gut (直觉), then do the opposite.
The number one way to avoid being cheated by posts on social media is to consider how it makes you feel. If it brings about a strong emotional reaction, like anger, anxiety, fear or even joy, that’s a sign it may be untrue. ____17____ When you meet misinformation, the biggest factor in whether you are cheated is when you want it to be true.
Don’t use AI when looking for the truth.
If you want to see if a post is true, do not ask Meta’s built-in AI bot or other AI options. If you’re doing a quick Google search, scroll past its AI Overview section on top and instead seek out known, trustworthy sources. AI tools can make things up and frequently don’t source where information comes from. ____18____
____19____
Don’t let a Facebook group be your go-to source for the day’s news, unless you know. Use tools that are designed for getting real news from their original sources.
____20____ If it’s a post by someone you know, don’t be afraid to ask them where they got their information.
A. Look elsewhere for the truth.
B. Don’t assume things were factual before.
C. Here’s how to find the truth on social media.
D. Another good sign is that you want to believe it.
E. There were also limitations on what could even be checked.
F. This makes it impossible to trace claims back to their origins.
G. Try to trace anything you’re not sure about to its original source.

Last Friday witnessed our School Science Festival themed on space. The festival was launched from 8 a. m. to 5 p. m. on the school playground, which attracted all the teachers and students. First, it started with the headmaster delivering a lecture about whether life could exist on other planets. Then, a workshop was presented where students tried different experiments with great interest, tasting what it was like to live in outer space. Finally, we participated in a science show and saw many scientific products.
The Science Festival has proved to be a huge success. Not only does it allow students the opportunity to explore, but also it inspires their enthusiasm for science.
