56.The Dilemma of Persistence and Surrender
As a freshman at Mingqi High School, I have encountered many forks in the road of my life. Among the numerous plans and aspirations I’ve set for myself, one stands out — my decision to learn the piano. Initially, the thought of mastering this elegant instrument filled me with enthusiasm, but soon, the rigorous practice and complex theory took their toll. I surrendered, overwhelmed by the challenge.
Looking back, I realize that my surrender was a result of my lack of perseverance. I failed to persevere when faced with difficulties. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: giving up too easily can lead to missed opportunities and unfulfilled dreams. Now, I strive to be more determined, understanding that true growth lies in overcoming obstacles, not avoiding them. Persistence, not surrender, is the key to success.

We are increasingly learning that our guts (肠胃) and our brains are intimately linked. But while there has been extensive research into how our diets can accelerate brain aging, less is known about the foods that can prevent cognitive 11 .
“The 12 field of Nutritional Cognitive Neuroscience uncovers specific foods and nutrients that promote brain health across the lifespan,” Aron Barbey, director of the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, told Newsweek. “Central to this effort is the discovery of nutrient profiles that can be used in nutritional interventions 13 at enhancing brain health.”
In a new study, published in the journal Nature Aging, Barbey, Jisheng Wu, and Christopher Zwilling used state-of-the-art technology to establish a set of specific nutrient profiles associated with better cognitive performance in adults over the age of 65, offering a 14 path towards designing nutritional interventions to promote healthy brain aging.
The study involved 100 cognitively healthy participants aged 65 to 75. The analysis 15 two types of brain aging among the participants: accelerated and slower than expected. And those with slower brain aging had a distinct nutritional profile. The researchers said that this nutritional profile is closely linked with nutrients found in the Mediterranean diet, which has 16 been associated with healthy brain aging.
The Mediterranean diet is 17 by a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and olive oil, with a moderate intake of cheese and fish and a limited intake of red and processed meat. This study provides a more 18 analysis of these associations.
“First, it’s one of the largest and most comprehensive studies to use blood-based biomarkers to investigate the 19 between diet and brain health,” he said. “Second, it goes beyond traditional cognitive tests by employing multimodal neuroimaging measures, and provides a more complete picture of brain health.”
However, Barbey noted that further research was needed to confirm these results. Observational studies like this one need to be followed by controlled trials conducted 20 to confirm the effectiveness of the identified nutrient profile in promoting brain health.

Marking his “golden birthday”, Aaron shared a joyful photoshoot with a bold balloon display reading “Disabled AF”. “I’ve officially lived to see 24 more birthdays than I was expected to see!” Aaron shared, adding. “If I had to sum up today in one word, it would be thankful.” He expressed gratitude (感恩) for his family, friends, business team, and even his trusty wheelchair — joking that it “kind of carries this whole operation.”
He continued “Now, I’m off to celebrate with one of my favorite foods, lobster bisque soup. And if you happen to find a margarita (a strong drink) on my wheelchair tray... no you didn’t.”

Which book you should read based on your next travel destination
Haruki Murakami’s “1Q84” is a dystopian adventure that’s perfect for the plane ride to Japan.

Bring “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to read in South America.
A significant work of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic follows generations of the Buendia family as they live in their South-American town. Garcia Marquez’s magical realism paired with his lush descriptions makes the book a perfect read for visiting some of the breathtaking sights of South America.
Consider picking up “The Great Gatsby” if you’re going to The Hamptons in New York.
Although the “West Egg” and “East Egg” in the classic novel more greatly resemble the Great-Neck and Port-Washington peninsulas (半岛) on Long Island, F. Scott Fitzgerald is believed to have been inspired by the Hamptons when crafting this book. Set in the Jazz Age, the book’s decadence, hot summers, and longing for past lovers make it a great companion for pool hopping, charcuterie eating, and luxury shopping in The Hamptons.
As you’re travelling around Amsterdam, read “The Fault in Our Stars”.
Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam. The Anne Frank House and The Rijksmuseum are two of many major destinations mentioned in the book. Plus, the bench from the film adaptation of this novel has even become its own tourist spot.
40.If you are into parallel existence and you are full of imagination, which book would you like to pick up?
A.The Fault in Our Stars. B.One Hundred Years of Solitude.
C.1Q84. D.The Great Gatsby.
41.Which one of the following is NOT true?
A.Generations of the Buendia family live in their South-American town.
B.One Hundred Years of Solitude is a book mainly about sights of South America.
C.“West Egg” and “East Egg” are both place names.
D.The Great Gatsby is written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
42.An excerpt from the book: One might marvel at the insanity (疯狂) of the situation: A mother sends her 16-year-old daughter alone with a 17-year old boy out into a foreign city.
According to the introduction mentioned above, which city is probably this foreign city?
A.Tokyo. B.New York. C.Amsterdam. D.Sao Paulo.

In the classic mirror test, an animal is marked on an area of the body by scientists and then placed before a mirror. If the animal touches or explores the mark, it is taken as an indication that it regards the reflected image as an image of itself, rather than of another animal.
Now, scientists have carried out the experiment with two species of snakes: 18 African ball pythons and 36 eastern garter snakes. Because of snakes’ poor ability to see, the researchers adapted the classic mirror test. They collected five scents: The snake’s own scent, its own scent mixed with olive oil, the scent of pure olive oil, the scent of another snake and the scent of another snake mixed with olive oil.
African ball pythons spent a similar amount of time with each scent. But eastern garter snakes paid much more attention to their own scent that had been mixed with that of olive oil. The scientists suggest the garter snakes recognized themselves by noticing the unexpected change in their smell. “They only do long tongue flicks (轻弹) when they’re interested in something,” Miller says
“I think their experimental model is more powerful than the mirror test,” Rulon Clark, a biologist, says. “A highly reflective mirrored surface doesn’t have a lot of equals in the natural environment. But researching chemical signals like scents left by a species and its fellow members well informs ourselves about how the species learns about itself and interacts with the environment.”
Researchers conducted a similar study in 2021 with 24 eastern garter snakes. Instead of scents and olive oil, they observed the snakes’ interest in cage liners (衬垫) — their own, versus those of other snakes with both similar and dissimilar diets. By observing how long a snake flicked its tongue before each liner, that team also showed that the snakes focused on their own scents more than others’.
“Snakes are believed to be boring animals that are not very smart, but our research shows that they display many of the same clever features as other animals. We can make progress in this field if we respect the species’ biology and way of dealing with the world and ask the right questions,” Gordon Burghardt, the study’s lead author, says.
43.What is the classic mirror test intended to test about animals?
A.Natural changes in their looks. B.Their self-recognition ability.
C.Differences in their vision. D.Their adaptability.
44.How did the researchers adapt the mirror test for snakes?
A.By adding mirror types. B.By including two species.
C.By giving them vision training. D.By relying on their sense of smell.
45.Why is the new experimental model considered more powerful?
A.It enables deeper exploration of animal behavior.
B.It can drive better treatment of chemical scents.
C.It benefits nature protection during studies.
D.It can reduce competition among species.
46.What inspiration does Gordon Burghardt probably want to share?
A.Trying to learn from research failures.
B.Exploring less-noticed research topics.
C.Designing species-specific research methods.
D.Exchanging ideas with scientists in different fields.
Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
You’re Choosing a Gift. Here’s What Not to Do.
On Christmas morning, a husband quietly apologizes to his wife that his gifts this year are humble-money is tight. She bravely declares that she loves the sweater. Later, as the children play with their new toys, the husband reveals one last gift box. 47 She squeals (发出尖叫声) with astonished delight.
This advertising is not just cloying (令人生厌的). It also feeds some false beliefs people commonly hold about what makes gift receivers happy. Fortunately, psychological and marketing research shows that these beliefs are wrong. 48
Ignore price. When researchers asked people to recall a gift they gave and then to rate how much they thought receivers liked it, higher prices went with higher ratings. But when people made the same ratings for a gift they had received, price was completely unrelated to enjoyment.
49 Gift givers tend to focus on how pleasurable it would be to use the gift, but overlook how easily or often the gift will be used; a husband might imagine his wife feeling like a million dollars in her diamonds, but ignore the fact that she seldom wears formal jewelry.
Don’t worry if your gift isn’t usable immediately. In one experiment, researchers asked people to compare different types of gifts: One was immediately appealing, like a dozen flowers in full bloom, or, for a similar price, a gift that would be more satisfying in the long term, like two dozen buds that would bloom in a few days. 50 However, others who were asked which they’d like to receive picked the latter.
A.Give people what they ask for:
B.Give gifts that are actually usable.
C.In it the wife discovers a diamond necklace.
D.It also offers guidance for picking gifts that people will actually like.
E.When people thought they would give the gift, they preferred the former.
F.Gift givers think that unexpectedness adds value because it shows thoughtfulness

But researching chemical signals like scents left by a species and its fellow members well informs ourselves about how the species learns about itself and interacts with the environment.(高反射率的镜面在自然环境中并没有很多相同的东西。 故选A。
46.推理判断题。根据最后一段““Snakes are believed to be boring animals that are not very smart, but our research shows that they display many of the same clever features as other animals. We can make progress in this field if we respect the species’ biology and way of dealing with the world and ask the right questions,” Gordon Burghardt, the study’s lead author, says.(“蛇被认为是一种无聊的动物,不太聪明,但我们的研究表明,它们表现出许多与其他动物相同的聪明特征。如果我们尊重物种的生物学和与世界打交道的方式,并提出正确的问题,我们就能在这一领域取得进展,”该研究的主要作者戈登·伯格哈特说)”可推知,Gordon Burghardt想说明研究者应采用与物种生物特性匹配的研究方法。故选C。
【答案】47.C 48.D 49.B 50.E
【导语】这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章通过事例就如何送礼提出了一些建议。
47.根据上文“On Christmas morning, a husband quietly apologizes to his wife that his gifts this year are humble-money is tight. She bravely declares that she loves the sweater. Later, as the children play with their new toys, the husband reveals one last gift box.(圣诞节的早晨,丈夫悄悄地向妻子道歉,说他今年送的礼物太少了——因为手头紧。
48.根据上文“This advertising is not just cloying (令人生厌的). It also feeds some false beliefs people commonly hold about what makes gift receivers happy. Fortunately, psychological and marketing research shows that these beliefs are wrong.(这种广告不仅令人腻味。它也助长了人们通常持有的关于什么能让收礼者快乐的错误信念。幸运的是,心理学和市场研究表明,这些观念是错误的)”可知,上文提到心理学和市场研究表明上述观念是错误的,本句为本段最后一句,推测应当说明如何帮助人们挑选真正喜欢的礼物。故D选项“它还提供了挑选人们真正喜欢的礼物的指导”符合语境,故选D。
49.根据本段内容“Gift givers tend to focus on how pleasurable it would be to use the gift, but overlook how easily or often the gift will be used; a husband might imagine his wife feeling like a million dollars in her diamonds, but ignore the fact that she seldom wears formal jewelry.(送礼者倾向于关注使用礼物的愉悦程度,而忽略了礼物使用的容易程度和频率;一个丈夫可能会想象他的妻子因为她的钻石而感觉身价百万,但忽略了她很少戴正式珠宝的事实)”可知,本段的主旨是考虑礼物实用的容易程度和频率,即本句总结礼物需要实际、可用的特点。故B选项“送实际可用的礼物”符合语境,故选B。
50.根据上文“Don’t worry if your gift isn’t usable immediately. In one experiment, researchers asked people to compare different types of gifts: One was immediately appealing, like a dozen flowers in full bloom, or, for a similar price, a gift that would be more satisfying in the long term, like two dozen buds that would bloom in a few days.(如果你的礼物不能立即使用,不要担心。

The Dilemma of Persistence and Surrender

American Writer — Toni Morrison
American writer Toni Morrison was born in 1931 in Ohio. She 1 (raise) in an African American family filled with songs and stories of Southern myths (神话), 2 later shaped her essays. Her happy family life led to her excellent performance in school, despite the atmosphere of racism (种族歧视) in the society.
3 (graduate) from college, Morrison started to work as a teacher and got married in 1958. Several years later, her marriage began to fail. For a temporary escape, she joined a small writers group, in 4 each member was required to bring a story or poem for discussion. She wrote a story 5 (base) on the life of a girl she knew in childhood who had prayed to God for blue eyes. The story was well received by the group, but then she put it away, 6 (think) she was done with it.
In 1964, Morrison got divorced and devoted herself to 7 (write). One day, she dusted off the story she had written for the writers’ group and decided to make 8 into a novel. She drew on her memories from childhood and expanded upon them using her imagination 9 the character developed a life of their own. The Bluest Eye was eventually published in 1970. From 1970 to 1992, Morrison published five more novels.
In her novels, Morrison brings in different elements of the African American past, their struggles, problems and cultural memory. In Song of Solomon, for example, Morrison tells the story of an Africa American man and his search for identity in his culture. The novels and other works won her several prizes. In 1993, Morrison received the Nobel Prize in Literature. She is the eighth woman and the first African American woman 10 (win) the honor.

(A)
Aaron Warren of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is a shining example of resilience (坚韧) and positivity. Born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Aaron was never expected to live past his third birthday — but he just turned 27, ignoring the odds with his optimism (乐观).
Beyond his enthusiasm (热情), Aaron is also a businessman making a difference. He founded Zipped Brands, a company that changes stylish name-brand shoes by adding zippers, making them easier to wear for people of all abilities.
“Because of my disability and bent toes, wearing shoes — especially ones I loved — was nearly impossible,” Aaron shared. “I accepted that stylish shoes weren’t meant for me.” Then came a breakthrough: What if I could add zippers to my favorite shoe brands? That simple yet powerful idea sparked a business, ensuring that everyone, normal or disabled, has access to (可使用) fashionable footwear.
Aaron’s story is a powerful reminder that resilience, humor, and gratitude can turn any challenge into an opportunity. He refuses to be defined by limitations, instead using his journey to uplift others — whether through his optimism or his business making life easier for people of all abilities.
