In Tokyo, Japan, there is a special place called Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. It used to be a palace garden, but now it is a big park with lots of trees and plants.

A hundred years ago, it was difficult for people to communicate over long distances. Then Samuel Morse invented the electric telegraph and the Morse code (密码).
Morse code is a series of dots and dashes. The dashes are about three times longer than the dots. Here is the code for the letters of the alphabet.
The Morse code also includes codes for numbers and punctuation signs (标点符号). Like texting, it also has groups of letters that stand for phrases. For example, the letters CUL stand for “see you later”. And the famous SOS signal stands for “save our souls”.
The electric telegraph could send messages using electricity. The worker at one end used a machine to tap (敲击) out a special code for each letter of the alphabet. The system changed the tapping into electrical movements and sent them to another place. Then they were changed back into the code at the place. The code was printed on a paper tape which was set on another machine. The worker on the receiving end used the code to change the message back into words. Later, workers learned to translate the code just by listening.
Today Morse code is used mostly by radio workers. Some pilots flying planes by instruments use Morse code to decide their plane’s location. But perhaps the most exciting use of Morse code is helping disabled people communicate. There have been cases in which people have learned to communicate using their eyelids to send messages using Morse code. Or they have used a finger to tap out messages.
16. Why did Samuel Morse invent the Morse code?
A. Because there might not be enough horses to carry messages.
B. Because communication wasn’t easy for people who lived far away.
C. Because modern electronic products were not invented at that time.
D. Because it was not convenient for people to use the electric telegraph.
17. What does the code “•-•• ••- -•-• -•-” stand for?
A. JOY. B. LOVE. C. LUCK. D. WARM.
18. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A. The letters. B. The messages. C. The special codes. D. The electrical movements.
19. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?
A. The dots are three times longer than the dashes.
B. The Morse code also includes codes for phrases.
C. Messages can only be sent by the Morse code using electricity.
D. Before the code was printed, the message was changed back into words.
20. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. How is the Morse code used today? B. What is the Morse code made up of?

In Tokyo, Japan, there is a special place called Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. It used to be a palace garden, but now it is a big park with lots of trees and plants.

Spending time in these forests can also make people feel better. Being in nature can help reduce stress. Many people go to Shinjuku Gyoen to relax, exercise, and enjoy the green space.

Before Fan Xiliang went away, his wife, Meng Jiangnu, broke her hairband and gave her husband one half as a symbol of love. Meng Jiangnu waited for her husband at home for five years but did not hear a word from him.
One night Meng Jiangnu dreamed that her husband kept yelling, “Cold, cold!” Very soon, she set off alone to look for Fan Xiliang. After walking across mountains and rivers, Meng Jiangnu finally got to the Great Wall where she was told that her husband had died. Hearing this, she sat down at the foot of the Great Wall and started crying. She cried day and night, and her crying made the wall fall down. She finally saw her husband’s bones under the wall.
This made Qin Shi Huang angry, and he decided to punish Meng Jiangnu. When he saw the young lady, however, he was surprised by her beauty. He asked her to marry him.

19. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?
A. The dots are three times longer than the dashes.
B. The Morse code also includes codes for phrases.
C. Messages can only be sent by the Morse code using electricity.
D. Before the code was printed the message was changed back into words.
20. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. How is the Morse code used today? B. What is the Morse code made up of?
C. How can we translate the Morse code? D. Why do common people use the Morse code?
