I grew up with my grandma in Arkansas, and she shaped the way I see the world. Grandma was always graceful (优雅的). She spoke softly and walked slowly with her hands behind her back. I copied her every move, and our neighbors called me her shadow.
When I was thirteen, I moved to California to live with my mother. My new house was a world away from Grandma’s little home. In Arkansas, we listened to the news and fun radio shows. In California, my mother played loud music on a record player. She wore lipstick and rouge (胭脂). The house was often filled with the laughter and loud talking of her guests. I clearly didn’t belong. I walked around my room like Grandma—with my hands behind my back.
My mother watched me for two weeks. Then, one night, she sat me down.
“Maya,” she said. “I know you don’t like me because I am not like your grandma. I am not. But I am your mother and I am working hard to keep this roof (屋顶) over your head and to take care of you. When you go to school, the teacher will smile at you and you’ll smile back. Other students you don’t even know will smile and you’ll smile. If you can force a smile for strangers, do it for me. I’ll appreciate (感激) it.”

Anna was excited about starting her life in a new middle school, but when she first walked through her school’s crowded hallways, that excitement turned to fear...and then, over the next few days, to loneliness. Why wasn’t anyone saying hello or inviting her to their lunch table? “Is it my clothes or my hair?” She wondered. By the end of the week, Anna walked through the halls alone, feeling certain that something had to be wrong with her—or that nobody saw her at all!
Why couldn’t Anna make any friends in her school? It wasn’t one other than the fact that nobody knew her. It sounds obvious (显而易见的), but when people didn’t know you, they treat you like a stranger instead of a friend. After all, you aren’t a friend yet!
Psychologists (心理学家) suggest that it’s our job to make first contact. You have to get in touch with others, so they can discover what a cool and worthwhile (值得的) person you are. No one else can make your first impression for you, so what are you waiting for?
The easiest way to get strangers to notice you is to notice them first, and one thing that is very important is to try to make eye contact with others when you greet them. Plenty of people will meet your eyes and will think that you are saying, “Hey, how’s it going?” Only then will you be on the road to friendship.

“I have left to follow my dream of knitting sweaters for penguins in Antarctica (南极洲) and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office... until my penguin friends are happy.” Weeks ago, a teacher in the UK sent this email to her Chinese student, and it soon became popular online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia came up with the idea.
The activity began because of a serious oil spill (石油泄漏) near Phillip Island in the 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins had a serious drop. When little penguins were covered in oil, their lives were put in danger.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked people from all over the world to knit sweaters for penguins. These sweaters could keep them warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil.
Luckily, the idea worked. Soon, there was another oil spill near Phillip Island. This time, the sweaters helped save 96 percent of the penguins in the area.

Every year, lots of people go to visit the Great Wall. The most popular part is Badaling. However, during my seven years in China, I never visited it, because there are too many tourists.
Actually, I like places that few people visit. One day, with my best friends, I chose to visit Simatai—another part of the Great Wall. It’s not very easy to go up and few people go there.
At the beginning, I saw some vendors (小贩) walking along the paths with postcards. They shouted loudly to sell the postcards but I was not interested in them. Soon, one old woman followed me wherever I went. Finally, I became angry. “Don’t you know the meaning of ‘No’!?” I shouted at her and left.
When we went up to the Great Wall, I was so deep in the beauty of landscape that I felt excited and totally forgot the old woman.

Half an hour later, we reached a safe place. Feeling better, I turned around to see who she was. I had thought she must be one of my friends. However, she was the old woman.

(2025·辽宁大连中山区·一模)

One-Day Trip to JingdezhenToday was a wonderful day in Jingdezhen and it was my first time to come here. The city is famous for its ceramics (陶瓷制品). The landscape gave a deep impression to me on my arrival. There are many mountains around the city, and the air is very fresh.
First, I visited the Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum. There are so many beautiful ceramic pieces from different times. There are also some fine artworks made hundreds of years ago with beautiful pictures on them. Making ceramics requires many steps and a lot of skills.
However, some bird protection groups have questioned if these sweaters might put more stress on penguins. In answer to this, the foundation said that the sweaters are only used for a short time. Once the penguins are better, they no longer wear them.
