Glass doors open straight on to this landscape, and though there’s no phone reception or wifi, there’s a TV with DVDs, and plenty of books to enjoy by the fire. There are stone circles and mountain bike trails (小路) nearby. Laggan Cottage On the Ardnish peninsula (半岛) and accessible only by boat—or a three-hour hike—this comfortable off-grid pad is seriously isolated (偏僻的). There’s zero mobile signal and no TV. Paraffin lamps, wood-burning stoves for hot water and a Calor gas cooker are the only modern conveniences you get. It is perfect for a week of watching the wildlife, hiking, and swimming. The Straw Cottage Candles and lanterns, gas lamps and solar lights create atmosphere at this straw-bale cottage, constructed using centuries-old methods. With no electricity or wifi, this home set on Ty Gwyn Farm offers true escapism. Young explorers can play in the stream, follow a treasure hunt and toast marshmallows by the fire. Dogs are welcome, too. East Lodge Other than the lack of wifi, East Lodge is a perfectly contemporary cottage. Arch windows accompany modern conveniences including a TV and DVDs for movie nights, though you may prefer to switch off and focus on outdoor fun, biking on nature trails and watching the wildlife. 1.What might attract travelers to the four holiday destinations? It was mostly data and statistics work staring at a screen. I was earning more than most of my friends, living the city life, going out at weekends. I had a good pension (养老金) and annual leave but it caused a lot of anxiety and worry.I was really unhappy. I wanted to get back to feeling passionate about something so I started thinking about the things I used to love. As a child, I’d always been involved in the outdoors, and I used to love hiking but all that had stopped after secondary school. I decided to volunteer with a local youth group and within a month, I’d gone camping with them. I absolutely loved it. It was like switching on a lightbulb. This was what I’d been missing. I started taking courses in mountain skills and wilderness first aid, and by August I was working my usual job in the week, and I was a climbing club leader at weekends. I loved connecting with nature, connecting with other people. Through all this, I learnt about the whole field of nature-based therapies (疗法). It was the perfect fit to combine my psychology background with my passion for the outdoors. I began taking courses in wild therapy, forest bathing and ecopsychology. I left my government job and in July 2020 I launched my business Nature Therapy Ireland, which is booming now. I’d thought I’d always live in a city but last year, I moved to Tipperary to live at the foot of a mountain, surrounded by nature. If I’m feeling stressed, I can step outside in my bare feet and stand on the grass to ground myself. In Dublin, the front door felt like a barrier—I had to have my keys, my phone, my jacket before I could even go out and find a green space. My life now is leading nature connection hikes and forest bathing walks. My salary has halved for the moment but I’ve adjusted. I’ve never looked back. 4.What did the writer think of her job in Dublin? A.Stressful. B.Valueless. C.Insecure. D.Demanding. 5.What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 2? Since I have moved here though, I have found this to actually be completely false and I think I would prefer it if they did just wear jeans, so I could do the same! Hamburg is a very big shopping city. Apart from H&M, New Yorker and Mango, I have found a New Look and a new Topshop have recently just opened. These shops are quite popular shops in the UK and sell clothes which are always considered as very "fashionable". Another thing I am really struggling with, as well as trying to be fashionable, I am trying to find the right clothes for the weather. I have found in Hamburg one minute it is nice and sunny but the next minute it is throwing it down with rain! One day it might start off really rainy and cold but by lunch time it is sunny and really hot, so wearing a coat is not practical. In general, however, I think it has also got cold here very quickly and it already feels like the winter that I am used to. I frequently go out in my winter coat, hat, gloves and scarf while many other people are still only wearing jeans or leather jackets. I don't understand how they do it as I am always freezing. Is it better to blend(使混合)in with fashion or be warm? I think I would rather be warm and maybe look like a bit of a banana in a huge coat rather than be shivering all day. What do you think? Clearly I am missing something here as I seem to be the only one struggling over these fashion decisions. 4.When the writer was in Hamburg, she found Germans . Over the past four decades, Zhi has devoted herself to rural education. She is a recipient of Touching China awards that recognize the most inspiring role models in 2016. She was also awarded as a model poverty fighter by the government. Zhi has a profound understanding of the importance of education in the mountains. Over the years, she has taught the students and cared for them, since many of them were “left-behind” children whose parents migrated to other places to work. More than 1,000 students of hers have left the mountain area, and created a better life for themselves. Located amid the mountains, the village was very poor and far from any town. Villagers had to hike in the mountains. “I arrived at the school in an early evening, and was shocked. I had known the conditions were poor, but the reality was worse.” Moreover, local people needed to go downhill to buy daily necessities, and transport them back in their hands or balanced across their shoulders. “I had never walked uphill on a mountain road before, so I walked much more slowly than others, sometimes I walked slowly behind too much and was scared to tears,” says Zhi. Sometimes she had to walk uphill by herself with a flashlight at night. The wild boars and rabbits sometimes frightened her and she enhanced her courage by singing loudly. But she gradually got used to her life there. At the beginning, she found many local people valued their sons far more than their daughters, and would not like to let them attend school. Zhi went to their homes repeatedly and gradually persuaded them to send all their children to school. For those who could not afford the tuition, she spared her own money to help. Zhi says seeing her students do well beyond the mountains is deeply rewarding. “My dream, the same as before, is to stay by the side of more children. I know poverty will forever say goodbye to the mountainous villages, to my students, and to myself,” says Zhi. 4.Why did Zhi choose to stay long in the mountains? A.She was a village teacher. They had to work out different kinds of problems within limited time to get out of a locked room. For the past hour, Maggie, Travis and Lucy had been locked inside a room decorated like a mad scientist’s laboratory. Together they decoded (破译) a secret language and solved a difficult maths problem. The last challenge, however, stopped them. The key to the door was trapped in a block office. “We have to melt the ice,” Lucy said. “But there’s nothing hot here!” Maggie complained. Travis pulled off his sweatshirt and wrapped (裹) it around the ice. “This keeps me warm,” he reasoned. A few minutes passed by, but the ice didn’t melt. “Isn’t cloth an insulator (隔热材料)?” Lucy asked. She tried to remember what she had learned in science class. “Heat always flows from warm objects to cold ones. The heat in the air will eventually melt the ice, but we need to find something that will help heat move from the air to the ice more quickly.” “What about glass?” Maggie asked. “Glass is also an insulator. It keeps heat from moving,” Lucy said. Then she noticed a large metal tray (金属托盘) across the room. “This might work!” Lucy put the block of ice onto the tray. Everybody’s eyes moved between the clock and the ice. Would they be able to free the key in time? At last, the key lay in the water on the tray. Then there’s the one my Colombian family does every year: the Novena de Aguinaldos. We pray (祈祷) for nine days without a stop, and this Novena counts down the nine days before Christmas. Most Americans have never heard of it, but in Colombia, it’s a big deal. Like all good traditions, especially around the holidays, this tradition is about community and getting together with friends and family. My family immigrated (移民) from Colombia when I was just two months old. Every year, we gather with a group of Colombian friends for as many of the nine nights as we can. There are three parts to the Novena de Aguinaldos. The first is the reading: each kid takes turns to read a book. Next comes the gozos, which means “The Joys”. That’s where the music comes in, and everyone gets an instrument, a maraca, a drum, a tin can — whatever you can use to make a sound. And then, the villancicos — Spanish Christmas carols (颂歌) come. I’ve lived my whole life in the US. There’s not a lot of Colombian culture that we still hang onto. Why do we still carry on with the tradition of celebrating the Novenas, then? When I asked my parents the other day, the answer was that immigrants didn’t belong anywhere — not where you were, nor where you were from. So my parents helped create a space where we did. Even if the Novenas were nothing like what we might have celebrated if we’d stayed in Colombia, the Novenas became the heart of our community. But our Novenas are starting to feel a little more breakable. It’s getting harder and harder for everyone to get together each year. Last year, I was studying abroad in Italy and couldn’t make it to any gathering; my brother went off to college and had exams late into December; my sister just moved to a new city, and my parents have taken up jobs in different countries. 8.What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A.The process of celebrating the Novena. B.The development of a Colombian tradition. C.The background of the Colombian family. D.The differences between the Novena and Christmas. 9.Why does the Colombian family celebrate the Novena? A.To remember their dead friends. B.To find a sense of belonging. C.To show their respect for Americans. D.To understand the local culture. 10.What makes celebrating the Novena difficult for the Colombian family? A.Lack of money. B.Their separate busy life. C.American laws. D.Friends’ complaints. 11.What’s the best title for the text? A.Growing Up B.Colorful Culture C.Exploring American Christmas Traditions D.Colombian Family’s Novena in the US Four of the best off-grid (不入网的) stays in the UK Shepherds’ Retreat Granite peaks, vivid green fields and speeding clouds are your only neighbours at this remote cottage in the Sperrins. A.Stylish decoration. B.Convenient location. C.Back-to-nature stays. D.Modern conveniences. 2.What can visitors do in Laggan Cottage and East Lodge? A.Play games. B.Swim in the sea. A.She enjoyed her voluntary work. B.She realized what she really loved. C.Recalling the past made her happy. D.A bright future was in store for her. 6.What drove the writer to launch her business Nature Therapy Ireland? A.Her adventurous experience. B.Her leadership and background. C.Her connection with other people. D.Her major and passion for nature. 7.Why did the writer compare her life in Dublin with that in Tipperary? A.To highlight how boring city life was. B.To call on people to get back to nature. C.To show her satisfaction with her change. D.To indicate how successful her business was. 根据第一段中的“I had a good pension (养老金) and annual leave but it caused a lot of anxiety and worry. I was really unhappy.(我有一个很好的养老金和年假,但它引起了很多焦虑和担忧。我真的很不开心)”可知,作者虽然工作待遇不错,但是感到焦虑和担心,觉得不开心。由此推知,作者觉得Dublin的工作压力很大。故选A项。 5. 根据第二段划线句子前的“I decided to volunteer with a local youth group and within a month, I’d gone camping with them. I absolutely loved it.(我决定在当地的一个青年团体做志愿者,不到一个月,我就和他们一起去露营了。我非常喜欢它)”可知,作者很喜欢与年轻人户外活动,划线句子的下文“This was what I’d been missing.(这就是我一直错过的)”可知,这是作者错过的,也就是指的上文中作者喜欢的户外活动,this指代的内容是划线句子。由此可知,划线句子的意思为“他意识到自己真正喜欢的是什么”。故选B项。 6.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“It was the perfect fit to combine my psychology background with my passion for the outdoors. I began taking courses in wild therapy, forest bathing and ecopsychology.(将我的心理学背景与我对户外活动的热情相结合是完美的选择。我开始参加野外疗法、森林浴和生态心理学课程)”可知,作者将他的心理学专业和自己对户外运动的热爱结合起来,并创办了Nature Therapy Ireland。故选D项。 7.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“In Dublin, the front door felt like a barrier — I had to have my keys, my phone, my jacket before I could even go out and find a green space. My life now is leading nature connection hikes and forest bathing walks. My salary has halved for the moment but I’ve adjusted. (二) 【2023-2024学年宁夏回族自治区银川一中高一下学期期末】Hummingbirds (蜂鸟) are a very important part of Mexico’s ecosystem, but because of the ever-spreading city landscape, they face all sorts of serious dangers. Her home in Mexico City has become known as a hummingbird hospital Catia’s story as a hummingbird nurse began in 2011, at a very difficult moment in her life. At that time, she focused on her battle with cancer and fell into a depression (抑郁) . She was walking on the street one day when she noticed a hummingbird that had suffered a serious eye injury. The kindhearted woman took it home and named it Gucci. She managed to nurse Gucci back to health, but she said it was Gucci that saved her. Why? Because the hummingbird managed to pull her out of the sadness and loneliness that had taken over her life. A.care more about what to wear B.don't always wear jeans C.like wearing fashionable clothes D.like wearing jeans 5.Shopping in Hamburg is very . A.difficult B.funny C.exciting D.convenient 6.We know the weather in Hamburg is . A.changeable B.comfortable C.rainy D.lovely 7.What does the underlined word "shivering" probably mean? A.wandering B.searching C.shaking D.watching 【答案】4.B 5.D 6.A 7.C 【分析】本文是记叙文。 根据第一段的“..have always heard that Germans just wear jeans or some strange clothes. Since I have moved here though, I have found this to actually be completely false"可知德国人只穿牛仔服或其他的奇奇怪的服装的说法是错误的,他们并不总是穿牛仔服。故选B项。 5.细节理解题。从第二段的“Hamburg is a very big shopping city. Apart from H&M, New Yorker and Mango, I have found a New Look and a new Topshop have recently just opened.”可知Hamburg是一个购物都市,有很多大型服装品牌,还有新开的购物商场,卖的都是很时尚的服装,购物是很方便的。故选D项。 6.细节理解题。从第三段的“I have found in Hamburg one minute it is nice and sunny but the next minute it is throwing it down with rain." 可知Hamburg一会阳光灿烂,一会又大雨倾盆,天气是多变的。故选A项。 7.词义猜测题。 从前面的“I don't understand how they do it as I am always freezing. ”可知,我经常穿着冬衣、帽子、手套和围巾全副武装地外出,而其他许多人仍然只穿牛仔裤或皮夹克。我不理解他们是怎么做到的。我想保暖,宁愿穿着一件大外套看起来像一个香蕉一样裹得严严实实的,也不愿整天冻得发抖。根据“I would rather be warm"可以判断出shivering应意为:因寒冷而发抖,故选C项。 (四) 【2023-2024学年宁夏石嘴山市第一中学高一下学期期末】Natalie Doan, 14, has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway, New York. B.She was a Touching China awards recipient. C.She was shocked by the poor living conditions. D.She was aware of the significance of rural education. 5.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A.The reasons for their poverty. B.The ways of buying daily necessities. C.The tough situations in the mountains. D.The description of Zhi’s teaching experience. 6.What can we learn about Zhi Yueying? A.She has a sense of achievement. B.She enjoys living in mountains. C.She has changed the local life. D.She likes challenges in teaching. 7.What is a suitable title for the text? A.A Life-changing Lesson B.A Contributor to Rural Education C.The Teaching Experience in Mountains D.The Current Situation of Rural Education 【答案】4.D 5.C 6.A 7.B 【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章讲述了在江西山区中做乡村教师的支月英的故事,过去的四十年中她一直致力于乡村教育,悉心教育照顾学生,她梦想着山村、她的学生和她自己都能早日脱离贫困。 4.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Over the past four decades, Zhi has devoted herself to rural education.(在过去的四十年里,她一直致力于乡村教育)”和“Zhi has a profound understanding of the importance of education in the mountains.(支月英对山区教育的重要性有着深刻的认识)”可知,支月英选择长期待在山里是因为她意识到了乡村教育的重要性。故选D项。 5.段落大意题。根据第三段中“Located amid the mountains, the village was very poor and far from any town. Villagers had to hike in the mountains. “I arrived at the school in an early evening, and was shocked. I had known the conditions were poor, but the reality was worse.” Moreover, local people needed to go downhill to buy daily necessities, and transport them back in their hands or balanced across their shoulders.(这个村庄坐落在群山之中,非常贫穷,远离任何城镇。村民们不得不在山里徒步旅行。“我很早就到了学校,吓了一跳。我知道条件很差,但现实更糟。”此外,当地人需要下山购买生活必需品,然后用手或肩膀扛着运回来)”可知,山里的村庄地理位置偏僻,条件很差,人们生活非常不便。因此,第三段主要是描绘山里艰苦的环境。故选C项。 6.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Zhi says seeing her students do well beyond the mountains is deeply rewarding.(支月英说,看到她的学生在大山之外取得好成绩是非常值得的)”可知,支月英对于自己教育的成果感到很满意,很有成就感。故选A项。 7.主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章讲述了在江西山区中做乡村教师的支月英的故事,过去的四十年中她一直致力于乡村教育,做出了巨大的贡献。由此可知,B项“乡村教育的贡献者”符合文章大意,适合作为标题。故选B项。 (六) 【2023-2024学年宁夏吴忠市同心县八中等校高一下学期期末】Maggie, Travis and Lucy’s science teacher set a special test for them. The three friends rushed out of the room in the last minute. “We made it!” Travis cheered. “Good thing you paid attention in science class!” 5.What final challenge did the three friends need to complete? A.To solve a maths problem. B.To learn a secret language. C.To find their science teacher. D.To get the key trapped in ice. 6.What does Travis mean by saying “This keeps me warm”? A.His sweatshirt can help melt the ice. B.He dislikes his sweatshirt. C.His sweatshirt is of good quality. D.He wants to take off his sweatshirt. 7.What does the underlined word “eventually” probably mean? A.carefully B.suddenly C.finally D.properly 【答案】5.D 6.A 7.C 【导语】本文为一篇记叙文。文章讲述了麦琪、特拉维斯和露西的科学老师为他们设置了一个特殊的测试,他们需要在有限的时间内解决不同的问题,才能从一个上锁的房间中逃脱,他们利用学过的科学知识突破重重关卡,最终走出房间的故事。 5.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The last challenge, however, stopped them. The key to the door was trapped in a block office. (然而,最后一次挑战阻止了他们。门的钥匙卡在一个街区办公室里了。)”可知,他们最后一个挑战是拿到被冰冻到冰块里的钥匙。故选D。 6.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“Travis pulled off his sweatshirt and wrapped (裹) it around the ice. ‘This keeps me warm,’ he reasoned. (特拉维斯脱下他的运动衫,把它裹在冰上。“这让我感到温暖,”他解释道。)”可知,他想把运动衫裹在冰上以此来融化冰。故选A。 7.词义猜测题。根据文章第七段“She tried to remember what she had learned in science class. “Heat always flows from warm objects to cold ones (她努力回忆在科学课上学到的东西。“热量总是从温暖的物体流向寒冷的物体)”以及“but we need to find something that will help heat move from the air to the ice more quickly (但我们需要找到一些东西来帮助热量更快地从空气转移到冰上。)”可知,此处指的是热量最终会融化冰。所以eventually意为“最后,最终”,与finally词义相同。故选C。 (七) 【2023-2024学年宁夏吴忠市同心县四校联考高一下学期期末】Some Christmas traditions are pretty standard in mainstream (主流) American culture: put up the tree, string up the lights, visit grandma, and so on. A.Growing Up B.Colorful Culture C.Exploring American Christmas Traditions D.Colombian Family’s Novena in the US 【答案】8.A 9.B 10.B 11.D 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。本文主要叙述了作者一家很早从哥伦比亚移民到美国,他们在美国人庆祝圣诞节前经常庆祝他们自己的节日,以此来找回归属感。但是由于后来家人都各自忙着自己的事,庆祝九日敬礼节也变得困难起来。 8.主旨大意题。根据第四段“There are three parts to the Novena de Aguinaldos. The first is the reading: each kid takes turns to read a book. Next comes the gozos, which means “The Joys”. That’s where the music comes in, and everyone gets an instrument, a maraca, a drum, a tin can—whatever you can use to make a sound. And then, the villancicos——Spanish Christmas carols(颂歌)come.”(九日敬礼有三个部分。首先是阅读: 每个孩子轮流读一本书。接下来是戈佐斯,意思是“快乐”。这就是音乐发挥作用的地方,每个人都能得到一件乐器,一个沙球,一个鼓,一个罐子——任何你能用来发出声音的东西。然后,是维兰西科人——西班牙圣诞颂歌。)可知,第四段主要讲了庆祝九日敬礼节的过程。故选A项。 9.细节理解题。根据第六段“When I asked my parents the other day, the answer was that immigrants didn’t belong anywhere—not where you were, nor where you were from. So my parents helped create a space where we did.”( 前几天我问我的父母,答案是移民不属于任何地方——不属于你在哪里,也不属于你从哪里来。所以我父母帮我们创造了一个空间。)可知,哥伦比亚家族庆祝九日敬礼节是为找到归属感。故选B项。 10.细节理解题。根据最后一段“It’s getting harder and harder for everyone to get together each year. Last year, I was studying abroad in Italy and couldn’t make it to any gathering; my brother went off to college and had exams late into December; my sister just moved to a new city, and my parents have taken up jobs in different countries.”( 每年大家聚在一起越来越难了。
