China Pavilion Shines at Expo 2025 in Osaka
On April 13, 2025, the China Pavilion officially opened at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan. With the theme "Building a Community of Life for Man and Nature — Future Society of Green Development", the pavilion covers 3,500 square meters, making it one of the largest foreign-built pavilions at the event.
Inspired by traditional Chinese bamboo slips and ancient scrolls, the pavilion's design combines cultural elements like Chinese characters and bamboo. Visitors can walk through paths that resemble Chinese gardens and see poems carved on the walls. The pavilion also uses eco-friendly materials and technologies to show China's efforts in green development.
Inside, the exhibitions focus on three main ideas: harmony between humans and nature, China's green achievements, and future technology. A major highlight is the moon soil samples collected by China's Chang'e-5 and Chang'e-6 lunar missions.
For the first time, people can see samples from both the near and far sides of the Moon up close. Other popular exhibits include a humanoid robot named Walker C that guides visitors, and an AI-powered Monkey King that answers questions in Chinese, Japanese, and English.
At the opening ceremony, guests from China and Japan, including government leaders and business representatives, watched traditional performances like the dance drama "Crested Ibis" and lion dances. The Secretary-General of the International Bureau of Expositions praised the pavilion for mixing "ancient wisdom with modern innovation".

Starliner astronauts return to Earth at last in SpaceX Dragon splashdown
The International Space Station is a large spacecraft. It is called the ISS for short. The ISS travels around the Earth. Astronauts from around the world live at the ISS for weeks or months at a time.
Sunita "Suni" Williams and Barry "Butch" Wilmore are astronauts with NASA. This is the United States space agency. The astronauts arrived at the ISS in June 2024. They were supposed to stay there for 12 days. But then their spacecraft had technical problems. So, their stay on the ISS became much longer. It lasted more than 9 months! Finally, on March 18, Williams and Wilmore returned to Earth. They landed in the water near Florida. Two other astronauts came home with them. One was Nick Hague, who is also from the U.S.
"What a ride," said Hague after splashing down. I see "grins from ear to ear," he said. After landing, the four astronauts got a medical check. They were flown to NASA's Johnson Space Center. This is in Houston, Texas. The astronauts will stay there for several days. Then, they can finally go home!
Leaks And Issues
Williams and Wilmore flew to the ISS in June 2024. They rode in a Boeing spacecraft. The spacecraft started to leak helium, a gas used to help it work. Some parts got too hot. NASA did not want the astronauts to fly home in that spacecraft. The space agency said it was too risky.
So, Williams and Wilmore joined the ISS. They ran hundreds of science experiments. They kept the machines on the ISS running. And they did three spacewalks. This is when an astronaut leaves the spacecraft for some kind of activity.
"That is what we do in human spaceflight," Wilmore said. We were ready to stay, she said.

The Cold Food Festival: A Time to Remember and Celebrate
Once upon a time in ancient China, there was a special day when people ate only cold food. This day is called the Cold Food Festival, or Hanshi Jie. It occurs around April 4th each year, close to the Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day). Though it is not as widely celebrated today, this festival has a touching story and a host of fascinating traditions.
The festival sprang from the story of a brave man named Jie Zitui. During the Spring and Autumn Period (770- 476 BC), Jie Zitui loyally served his master, Duke Wen of the Jin State, during a time of crisis. On one occasion, when the duke was starving in the mountains, Jie cut a piece of his own flesh to make soup for him. Later, when the duke regained power, he forgot Jie's sacrifice.
Heartbroken, Jie retreated to Mianshan Mountain. To force him out, the duke ordered soldiers to set fire to the mountain, but tragically, Jie and his mother perished in the flames. To honor Jie, the duke banned fires on that day. People could only eat cold food prepared earlier.
On the Cold Food Festival, families prepare traditional cold dishes like qingtuan (green dumplings made from glutinous rice and herbs), noodles, and rice balls. They gather to share these meals, reflecting on their ancestors and the values of loyalty and sacrifice.
Over time, the Cold Food Festival became closely intertwined with the Qingming Festival. Today, many people combine these celebrations with outdoor activities like picnics. Schools often share the story of Jie Zitui to teach students about loyalty, gratitude, and family values. Even online, people exchange cold food recipes and share photos of their traditions.
Fewer people follow the fire-ban rule today, but the festival's essence remains deeply meaningful. The ancient fire ban was a tribute to Jie Zitui and also played a role in protecting forests during dry seasons. It reminds us to remember those who came before us, celebrate new beginnings, and cherish the values that connect generations. So, the next time you see someone enjoying qingtuan in early April, you'll know it's part of a rich and meaningful Chinese heritage.
23. What is the primary reason for the Cold Food Festival's origin?
A. To celebrate the start of spring B. To honor Jie Zitui's loyalty and sacrifice
C. To promote healthy eating habits D. To protect forests during dry seasons
24. What did Jie Zitui do to save Duke Wen of Jin?
A. He cut his own flesh to make soup B.He provided shelter in the mountains
C. He fought off enemy soldiers D. He taught farming skills to villagers
25. How are the Cold Food Festival and Qingming Festival related today?
A. They are celebrated on the same day B. Their traditions have become intertwined
C. The Cold Food Festival replaces Qingming D. They are unrelated festivals
26. What modern activity is often combined with these festivals?
A. Fireworks displays B. Traditional opera performances
C. Outdoor picnics D. Dragon boat races

Why some flowers greet us each spring
"April showers bring May flowers." Have you ever heard this saying? When April ends, those May flowers start to appear. You may recognize a few from last spring.
Many plants live and die within one year. Gardeners replant them each spring. But other plants stick around. They remain year after year. These plants can bloom again on their own. People do not have to replant them.
These plants do need some help though. They need light from the sun. They need water from the rain. They also need air. All plants need these things.
Just One Year Or Many.
Many flowers are called annuals. Their lives last just one year. They start out as seeds. Then they grow up, make flowers and die. The whole process takes a year. Sunflowers and petunias are examples of annuals.
Then there are perennials (多年生植物). These plants are different from annuals. Perennial plants can survive for years.
New Plants Replace Old Ones
Annuals make a bunch of seeds, he says. They use everything they have to do it. They put all of their energy into it. The plants take a chance. If they are lucky, the seeds will grow new plants. The annuals will die. But the new plants will replace them.
Perennials are different. They do not make a bunch of seeds all at once. Instead, they hold onto them. They save their energy. The plants use most of their energy to keep themselves alive.
Perennials can repair themselves, too. They can grow new stems and leaves. Many will make flowers. But they sometimes wait years to do it. In most cases, the plants will save some energy.
That way, they have enough for the next season. Then they can flower again.
To get this energy, they need sunlight. The seeds also need enough water in the winter and springtime. Without water and sunlight, the seeds will not grow. They will stay below the surface.
Tricking Plants
Some scientists wish annuals were more like perennials. They are trying to trick annuals into living longer. But there is only one way to do this. It involves the plants' DNA.
DNA is the basic building block of life. It tells a plant how to grow and work. Scientists are studying the DNA of annuals. They hope to change the DNA. Then the plants might live longer.
Why are scientists trying this? In time, it could help grow more food. For example, corn is an annual. It dies each year. Then farmers have to plant it again. They would not need to replant it if corn were a perennial.
That would be a big help, James says. It could change how we grow food.
27. What is the section "Tricking Plants" MAINLY about?
A.Corn is a type of plant that must be replanted by farmers each year.
B.Scientists have found it impossible to change the DNA of plants.
C.Scientists are hoping to turn all plants into food people can eat.
D.Scientists are trying to find ways to make plants live longer.
28. How are annuals and perrenials alike?
A.They both save their energy. B.They both bloom once a year.
C.They both make seeds. D.They both can repair themselves.
29. Life cycles are stages that animals and plants go through from birth to death. What is the correct order that describes the life cycle of annuals?
A.seed, growth, flower, death B.seed, flower, growth, death
C.growth, seed, flower, death D.growth, flower, seed, death
30. What is the article MAINLY about?
A.how to grow more flowers B.why we should change the color of flowers

第3节 阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
This is the time of year when many gardeners are harvesting tomatoes. Jessica Damiano, a gardening expert from the USA, recently reported about the many pictures of strangely shaped tomatoes sent to her from fans of her gardening advice. She said people sometimes question if the tomatoes are okay to eat.
The good news, Damiano said, is that there is nothing wrong with the deformed (变形的) fruits. They are perfectly good for eating. Their unusual appearance does not affect their taste.
If you have ever cut open a tomato, you know they are divided into internal parts, called locules(子房室),which have seeds and a substance called gel (凝胶). Most tomatoes have about four or five locules; other kinds of the fruit, like cherry tomatoes, have two or three. Plum tomatoes have two locules.
But when a plant experiences temperature extremes (极端), cell division in the developing fruit can go off track. Temperatures over 32 °C during the day and 27 °C overnight can lead the tomato to form an extra locule. But there is not enough room inside a tomato for the extra part, so it grows on the outside of the fruit. Not every tomato on an affected plant will be deformed, however.
"Under the right conditions (temperatures that are too hot or even too cold), this could affect one or two tomatoes each plant, depending on where they are in the development process and what the weather conditions are," said Timothy McDermott. He is an assistant professor at Ohio State University.
"Your tomatoes may develop a locule oddity (怪现象), which is about one in a thousand," McDermott said. Any tomato can grow an extra locule. Provide shade for your plants when temperatures are predicted to stay above 32 °C for several days.
And so when harvesting your crop, remember: the funny-looking tomatoes taste just as good!

Exploring the Unknown in the Al Age
Nowadays, Al develops quickly and has become an important part of our lives. In the exhibition hall, humanoid robots are showing amazing skills. They can dance gracefully, following the rhythm precisely, which always attracts a crowd of spectators. In factories, they are used to assemble products with high precision, speeding up the production process.
In daily life, they can help with household chores like cleaning and tidying up, making our lives more convenient.
Powerful Al tools like DeepSeek offer great assistance to students. For example, it can provide detailed explanations for difficult knowledge points, helping students understand complex concepts quickly. It can also generate practice questions tailored to individual needs, enabling students to reinforce their learning effectively.
As students, we should embrace this Al age. Firstly, we need to study hard to master basic knowledge, because it is the foundation for using Al tools. Secondly, we should learn how to use Al properly to improve our learning efficiency. In the future, I believe Al will bring more surprises. Maybe it will help us explore outer space and discover new planets, opening up a brand-new world for humanity.
