There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college. King's Art Centre A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. Byron's Pool Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University, Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of "mess and drunkenness". However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his roans. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village. It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf- ----over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool. 46.As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for_____. At the age of 15, I felt that if I wanted to take my hobby to the next level, I had to do something special. So I determined to start a personal project: I would take one photograph every day for a whole year of my life. I knew that many other young photographers had done the same thing before, but it seemed like a really great idea, and so I started. After a few weeks, I decided to put these photos onto a website for young photographers because I was keen to create a photo diary, and also to have the chance to show other people my photos. I was amazed to discover that there were others who liked the way I saw and photographed things. I was also enjoying photographing a wide range of subjects. Then someone suggested that if my photographs all had a common topic or idea to connect them, my project would be even better — and I agreed. Sof began to concentrate more on taking photos of nature scenes, especially of birds and the sky. A lot of them were black and white photographs, which was very different to what many other young photographers were doing — they were all taking colour photos. As a result, I sometimes had doubts about my project, and I almost gave up several times. In the end, however, I trusted my own feelings, and became more confident about my photographic style and choices. One day I showed my project to my art teacher at school. She told me about a national photography competition for people of my age. So I entered some of my photos, just for fun. I’ll never forget the moment when the judges told me that I had won the first prize. I was so happy, as my project meant so much to me. It was the first time. I had realised that maybe my photography was really good, and that I might actually be able to work as a professional photographer. I now have my own photography studio and I’ve never regretted my career choice. 51.Martin started his project because he wanted to _________. B.He was anxious about what others would think. C.He was certain that the photos would be better in colour. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it. Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then,Jim has traveled over 1, 800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art. Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven't changed---all he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙子) and most importantly, his lively imagination! Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, looking for perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world's largest freelance (自由职业的) drawing, was created in the desert sand of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away. Jim's art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named “Sandman” in 2015. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand-he is also an excellent chef (厨师) and founder of an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose motto is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced. 41.What do we know about Denevan? A.He used to be a chef. But there was one thing I enjoyed: running. It felt like I was soaring (翱翔) through the air. Sadly, this changed when I hurt my knee two years ago. I had to stay in be d for two weeks and even walking a short way was hard for me. I was so upset that I cried as I moved to the car for several days. When therapy (治疗,疗法) wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a blessing because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit. Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I’d feel a surge (涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn’t get swayed away (动摇) by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer. After 3-4months of practising hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds (减轻体重) from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I’d taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better. As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms. Also, practising yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practising with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life! 41.What once depressed the author terribly according to Paragraph 1? A.Her inability to walk. But with competition from other sports like soccer, baseball is not as prevalent as it used to be. However, the baseball field is still a place for young boys to prove themselves. Tim was one of those boys. His build was slight and unfinished. Some boys had the makings of athletic ability through every growth period. Tim seemed to be growing in odd ways: long arms and legs, thin shoulders, and no meat on his bones. But he loved baseball. Although strikeouts (三振出局) piled up in the recording sheets, Tim continued. He knew his body didn’t respond to dreams and wishes, but his desire was always there. Tim practiced his swing every day, and every strikeout brought two things to the little boy: determination and some tears that Tim quickly wiped away before returning to the baseball field. His teammates encouraged him. His coach worked with him. Even the opposing teams held their breath, wishing for his hitting, just one hit for the boy who seemed to deserve it more than any other 10-year-old kid in the world. What teammates and parents and even the coach never saw was a gray car that pulled up each game in the parking lot. Inside was Tim’s father, too weak from advancing cancer to get out of the car. It was a tough assignment for a father to watch his kid strike out, but for Tim’s father, he believed success was made out of sweat, tears, and effort instead of results. That was also what he expected Tim to understand and do. At the end of the season, Tim stood on the field and was as determined as ever. He did his best, but ended up missing the chance to advance. When the game was over, Tim ran straight into the gray car and into the arms of his father, who witnessed his son’s every effort and was proud of him. C.To pave the way for Tim’s poor family background. D.To show Tim has few physical advantages in the sport. 43.What does the way Tim’s team and opponents treated him suggest? A.Tim held the whole team back. B.Tim’s efforts won others’ respect. C.Tim’s slow progress brought hope to his opponents. D.Tim touched his coach with his excellent performance. 44.What can be concluded about Tim’s father? A.He felt disappointed at Tim’s strikeouts. B.He was an open-minded father. C.His expectations of Tim were beyond Tim’s ability. D.His distant watching was to avoid a mental burden on Tim. 45.What life lesson does the author mainly convey to us? A.Easier said than done. B.Where there is a will, there is a way. C.One false step makes a great difference. D.Success is a journey rather than a destination. 5.(23-24高二下·天津和平区·期末) Many people are told that certain activities are out of the question for them, but a new invention proves that where there is a will, there is a way. Dr. Zacharias Vamvakousis has come up with a creative way to improve the quality of life for countless people through the power of music. His invention is called EyeHarp, which enables individuals to make music using their gaze (注视) instead of their hands. “EyeHarp is the first musical application that allows people with disabilities to play music with eyes or head movements,” Zacharias explains. “Using an eye tracker, you can make melodies by looking at the notes on the screen.” EyeHarp uses the same type of digital eye-tracking technology used in some computer games. But instead of using it to aim weapons at digital opponents, EyeHarp uses it to track your eyes as they stay on different musical notes on a colorful circle on your computer screen. The application allows you to play three to four notes every second. However, users have to be careful not to move their eyes too quickly from one musical note to the next. So, much like any other instrument, playing a tune takes practice and concentration. Zacharias was inspired to create the magical application after a musician friend was badly hurt in a motorcycle accident. His friend was worried he’d never be able to play his guitar again, so Zacharias decided to find a new way to make music available to him. While his friend didn’t end up needing EyeHarp, Zacharias was on a mission to help others who thought music was forever lost to them. These are people who are so disabled that they don’t have the opportunity to do many things and learning music through EyeHarp gives them happiness, the purpose and the opportunity to play music. Zacharias agreed, saying that music builds social connections and raises self-esteem. He’s currently training music teachers to use EyeHarp so they can reach even more people with disabilities. This invention has the potential for changing so many lives. Hundreds of people with disabilities have used EyeHarp. “There wasn’t any instrument they could play. But now, they’re able to make their own music,” says Zacharias. “I hope it will light up the lives of more people like them.” 38.What is EyeHarp? A.A musical instrument played with disabled minds. B.A device that helps people play music with their eyes. C.A musical game using eye-tracking technology. D.A medical tool for improving ones’eyesight. 39.For what reason did Zacharias create the appliance? A.His love for music and technology. B.A need for a new form of musical therapy. C.A desire to help his musician friend. D.A sympathy towards people with disabilities. 40.How does EyeHarp work according to the passage? A.By tracking the movement of players’ hands. B.By detecting the sound of a music note. C.By following the stay of the gaze on the screen. D.By recognizing the face of a disabled user. 41.What can we infer about EyeHarp from the passage? A.It is very difficult to play. B.It can be used by anyone easily. C.It has limited musical notes. There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college. King's Art Centre A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend tees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists. You could attend a class teaching you how to 'learn from the masters' or get more creative with paint ---- free of charge. The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee. The Botanic Garden The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University. The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss. Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals. The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called 'Hissing Sid' is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun. A.attending the masters' class B.working with local artists C.learning life drawing D.seeing an exhibition 47."Torch Aloe" and "Venus Flytrap" are_____. A.common insects B.impressive plants C.rarely-seen snakes D.wildlife-enthusiasts 48.We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed_____. As a young photographer, I’ve been fond of taking photographs since I was a child. D.He was worried that his photos might not be interesting. 54.How did winning the competition affect Martin? A.He realised how enjoyable competitions can be. A.The temperature was difficult to control in yoga class. B.She couldn’t bear the pain the knee injury brought. C.Lack of confidence prevented the author doing yoga. D.She was greatly influenced by negative thoughts. 44.What can we learn about the author from paragraph 4? A.Her physical state has acquired a new outlook. B.Her social circle was widened in the yoga classes. C.She has developed many healthy eating habits. D.She did better than her classmates at school. 45.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A.To call on readers to sign up for yoga courses. Sometimes success really means more than the result. 41.Which can replace the underlined word “prevalent” in Paragraph 1? A.Challenging. B.Complicated. C.Popular. D.Competitive. 42.What does the author intend to do by describing Tim’s build? A.To compare Tim’s athletic ability with others. B.To emphasize Tim was too young to play the game. 根据画线词的上文“From the heartland to urban parks, there was a time when baseball was the only game in the summer holidays. But with competition from other sports like soccer(从中心地带到城市公园,曾经有一段时间棒球是暑假里唯一的运动。但面对其他运动的竞争,比如足球)”和下文“as it used to be(就像以前一样)”可知,棒球曾经非常受欢迎,随着其他运动的竞争,会不再那么受欢迎,画线词的意思应该是“受欢迎的,流行的”,与Popular意思一致。故选C项。 42.推理判断题。根据第二段中“His build was slight and unfinished. Some boys had the makings of athletic ability through every growth period. Tim seemed to be growing in odd ways: long arms and legs, thin shoulders, and no meat on his bones.(他身材瘦小,尚未长好。有些男孩在每个成长阶段都具有运动能力的体格。Tim似乎在以奇怪的方式成长:长长的胳膊和腿,瘦削的肩膀,骨头上没有肉)”可知,Tim身材瘦小,四肢纤细,不像其他男孩那样具有运动能力的体格。因此,作者通过这段描述是想说明Tim在这项运动中没有什么身体上的优势。故选D项。 43.推理判断题。根据第三段“Tim practiced his swing every day, and every strikeout brought two things to the little boy: determination and some tears that Tim quickly wiped away before returning to the baseball field. His teammates encouraged him. His coach worked with him. Even the opposing teams held their breath, wishing for his hitting, just one hit for the boy who seemed to deserve it more than any other 10-year-old kid in the world.(Tim每天都练习挥杆,每次三振都给这个小男孩带来两样东西:决心和眼泪,Tim在回到棒球场前迅速擦干眼泪。他的队友鼓励他。他的教练和他一起训练。就连对方球队都屏住呼吸,希望他能命中,只要一个命中,这个男孩似乎比世界上任何一个10岁的孩子都更值得命中)”可知,Tim的队友、教练都支持他,甚至对方球队都希望他能命中,觉得他值得一个命中。由此推知,Tim不懈的努力赢得了别人的尊重。故选B项。 44.推理判断题。根据第四段中“It was a tough assignment for a father to watch his kid strike out, but for Tim’s father, he believed success was made out of sweat, tears, and effort instead of results. That was also what he expected Tim to understand and do.(看着自己的孩子三振出局对一个父亲来说是一项艰巨的任务,但对Tim的父亲来说,他相信成功是由汗水、眼泪和努力组成的,而不是结果。这也是他希望Tim能理解和做到的)”和最后一段中“He did his best, but ended up missing the chance to advance. When the game was over, Tim ran straight into the gray car and into the arms of his father, who witnessed his son’s every effort and was proud of him.(他尽了最大的努力,但最终还是失去了晋级的机会。比赛结束后,Tim径直跑进那辆灰色的汽车,投入父亲的怀抱,父亲见证了儿子的每一次努力,并为他感到骄傲)”可知,Tim的父亲相信成功在于过程中付出的汗水、眼泪和努力,希望儿子可以明白这个道理,虽然Tim最后还是失败了,但他为儿子感到骄傲。由此可知,他是一个思想开明的父亲。故选B项。 45.推理判断题。根据第四段中“It was a tough assignment for a father to watch his kid strike out, but for Tim’s father, he believed success was made out of sweat, tears, and effort instead of results.(看着自己的孩子三振出局对一个父亲来说是一项艰巨的任务,但对Tim的父亲来说,他相信成功是由汗水、眼泪和努力组成的,而不是结果)”和最后一段中“Sometimes success really means more than the result.(有时候,成功不仅仅意味着结果)”可推知,作者想通过Tim不懈努力训练,在过程中拼尽全力的故事告诉我们:成功是一段旅程,而不是终点。故选D项。 新闻报道 5.(23-24高二下·天津和平区·期末) Many people are told that certain activities are out of the question for them, but a new invention proves that where there is a will, there is a way. D.It brings hope to many disabled people. 根据文章第二段内容“His invention is called EyeHarp, which enables individuals to make music using their gaze instead of their hands.
