My husband and I took up a vacation, and he revealed a hidden lake that was on top of a mountain nearby — a must-see on his wish list. The round-trip was 10 miles, rated intermediate to difficult, and panic instantly seized me. I hadn’t been active and had resigned myself to the idea that age meant less energy.
At dawn the next day, we started the climb. It was tough from the get-go. Midway, we encountered a couple who had given up trying to reach the lake. Noticing the husband’s disappointment, I determined right then that I would continue no matter what.
Oddly, as we walked, I stopped thinking about not being able to tolerate the walking. Instead, I began to enjoy the beauty of the area and our conversation. What I had considered to be an unattainable goal had become a source of satisfaction.
As the day wore on and the path grew more dangerous, I sensed my husband’s worry about time. We had to get off that mountain before dark, or we would have to find shelter from the cold and the many animals in the area.
At last, we reached the top. The hidden lake enchanted both of us. Birds were singing and flying from tree to tree as if they were welcoming us. The water was overwhelmingly peaceful. Too soon, it was time to depart, because we had to make it down before nightfall. We didn’t even have time to rest on the way down. Finally, we did it, and we were safely in the truck heading back to our campsite while it was still light.
In the following days, I noticed that my perception of myself began to change. I realized I could tackle things I’d feared. I resolved to exercise daily for health and strength. There’s a world of adventures awaiting me, and I’m eager to embrace (拥抱) life to the fullest with my newfound confidence.
24. What made the author determined to go on climbing halfway?

In a groundbreaking effort to automate scientific discovery through artificial intelligence (AI), researchers have developed a virtual laboratory with ‘AI scientists’ — large language models (LLMs). These LLMs are assigned specific scientific roles. Remarkably, the AI-driven process proposed nearly 100 structures in a small part of the time it would take a traditional human research team.
Scientists globally are exploring LLMs to speed up research, including the creation of an ‘Al scientist’ capable of performing various parts of the scientific process. However, most prior studies have focused on small-range experiments. To address this, a virtual lab was created, integrating knowledge from multiple fields. The team first trained a principal investigator (PI). The PI then developed three more specialized AI agents in immunology (免疫学), computational biology, and machine learning.
The virtual lab’s process begins when the PI sets a clear research goal. In one case, it was to design virus-binding nanobodies (纳米抗体). Tasks are then assigned to specialized AI agents. The immunology agent focuses on immune responses and nanobody design, the computational biology agent analyzes data and models interactions, and the machine-learning agent develops algorithms (算法) to predict nanobody effectiveness. The scientific critic ensures the accuracy of all outputs throughout.
This human-AI cooperation represents a significant shift in how AI is used in scientific research. By treating AI as cooperators, researchers can unlock their full potential. However, human oversight is still essential. The AI agents, though capable, need human guidance to ensure accurate and relevant results. This approach enables interdisciplinary research, allowing scientists to handle complex problems that require knowledge from multiple fields.
As AI technology advances, its role in research will expand. The virtual lab offers a preview of a future where AI and humans work together on global challenges. But the integration of AI also brings practical concerns. In conclusion, the AI-powered virtual lab is a significant milestone, speeding up scientific discovery and laying the foundation for more innovative interdisciplinary research.
28 How does AI-driven research differ from human-led research?
A. It’s high-cost. B. It’s time-efficient. C. It’s insight-based. D. It’s slow-paced.
29. Why is a case mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To show AI’s limits. B. To explain PI’s role.
C. To introduce new agents. D. To show goal-task flow.
30. What can we learn about human-AI cooperation?
A. It opens up a new era in research. B. It helps avoid complex problems.
C. It doesn’t need human control. D. It simplifies all research tasks.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the prospects of the AI-powered virtual lab?
A. Indifferent. B. Debatable. C. Approving. D. Dismissive.

A recent research by UK and Chinese scientists, published in Nature Human Behaviour, reveals that interactions with friends and family may keep us healthy because they boost our immune system and reduce our risk of diseases such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Researchers drew this conclusion after studying proteins from blood samples taken from over 42,000 adults signed up to the UK Biobank.
Social isolation (孤立) and loneliness are known to be linked to poor health and early death, yet the biological processes behind this connection remain unclear. To explore this, the researchers examined the “proteomes (a set of proteins)” in blood samples of 40-69-year-olds. They calculated scores for social isolation and loneliness for each individual.
After analyzing the proteomes and accounting for factors like age and socioeconomic background, the team found 175 proteins related to social isolation and 26 to loneliness, with about 85% overlap. Many of these proteins are involved in viral responses and the immune system, and are also linked to diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke.
Using Mendelian randomization they identified five proteins whose levels were directly affected by loneliness. One such protein is ADM. Higher levels of ADM, which is related to stress response and chemical messenger regulation, were associated with a smaller volume of the insula (脑岛) and the left caudate (involved in emotional and social processes), as well as an increased risk of early death. Another protein, ASGR1, is linked to cardiovascular disease risk.
Dr Chun Shen from the University of Cambridge noted that their work has found key proteins in the relationship between social isolation, loneliness, and poor health. Professor Barbara Sahakian from the University of Cambridge said, “These findings drive home the importance of social contact in keeping us well. More and more people of all ages are reporting feeling lonely. That’s why the World Health Organization has described social isolation and loneliness as a ‘global public health concern’. We need to find ways to tackle this growing problem and keep people connected to help them stay healthy.”
32. What can we learn from the recent study?
A. Social ties benefit health. B. Blood proteins cause diseases.
C. Loneliness is the main cause of poor health. D. Interacting with others helps you live longer.
33. Why are “proteomes” in blood samples of 40-69-year-olds checked?
A. To calculate social scores. B. To explore biological links.
C. To study age differences. D. To analyze blood samples.
34. What do the numbers in paragraph 3 want to tell us?
A. Isolation proteins’ quantity. B. Loneliness proteins’ amount.
C. Proteins’ overlap percentage. D. Affected proteins’ number.
35. What does Professor Barbara Sahakian want to tell us?
A. Social isolation is avoidable. B. Loneliness may be overstated.
C. Key proteins solve problems. D. Social contact keeps us well.

A Guide to Recovering an Overgrown Garden
What is the best way to repair an overgrown garden? ____36____ Here are some of her suggestions for making big improvements.
Decide what to clear away. Take a notebook and walk around the garden. Determine which plants to save, remove, or tend to. Dead plants, weeds, and foreign ones should be removed first. If the weather allows, dig them out with their roots. ____37____ Also, give away healthy plants you don’t want through online groups or neighborhood web pages.
____38____ Once you’ve finished pruning (修剪), shift your focus to the soil. Measuring the soil’s pH is essential. ____39____ You can easily obtain soil-testing kits from local garden stores or online platforms. Cooperative extension services are part of a Department of Agriculture system that includes some universities. It aims to help farmers and people interested in plants. If the soil is hard, break it up with a machine or hand tools. Finally, spread five to seven centimeters of compost (堆肥) over the area. As it breaks down, nutrients (营养物质) will work their way into the soil.
Determine pruning strategies by plant types. When it comes to pruning, the time and approach rely on the type of plants. For overgrown or unproductive leaf-losing bushes, late winter is the suitable time for pruning. One option is cutting the plant near ground level for quick recovery. If you want to maintain a normal appearance, prune the branches at uneven heights. Another method is to cut back one-third of the branches each year for three years. This is a less-severe approach but demands a great deal of patience. These pruning methods need time to take effect. ____40____
A. Look to the dirt.
B. If not, wait until spring.
C. Plan in the autumn and winter months.
D. A knowledgeable garden expert holds the key.
E. Clearly, their methods differ significantly for these two types of plants.
F. This step ensures a perfect environment for the new plants you intend to introduce.
G. It might take one or two years, but a step-by-step approach will make gardening a joy again.

I was seven years old and had just moved to Anaheim, California with my grandparents. Facing a new school, new friends, and worst of all, getting new shots, I felt a bit nervous. As I sat on the wrinkled paper on the doctor’s exam table one week before school was to start, with my legs hanging over the end, I feared the moment when he would say, “It’s time for your shot.” The only thing I knew that would make the pain of a shot worthwhile was the balloon I had been promised.
I was brave during the shot and didn’t even make a sound. While waiting for the doctor to bring the balloon, I had so many fun ideas. I had a favorite doll (洋娃娃). And I wanted to tie it to my doll’s arm and act like she was floating away, then save her. I also thought about tying it to my dog Max’s tail and pretending my dog was an alien (外星人) explorer checking if Earth was a good place for alien dogs. And I really wanted to rub the balloon on my hair to make my hair stand up, just like the members of KISS, my favorite band at that time.
However, the doctor returned with a concerned look on his face and delivered the bad news. “I’m sorry, but we don’t have any balloons left.” All my plans for the balloon disappeared in an instant. I was so disappointed.
On the way home, Grandma kept telling me to think positively and that everything would be fine. She said we had some balloons at home that I could blow up. But I just knew those balloons wouldn’t be as special as the one from the doctor’s. We didn’t have a gas tank to make them float, and I didn’t have to go through anything to get them.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I got home, I still felt sad.

第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】 When I got home, I still felt sad. The house seemed quiet without the balloon. I went to the backyard, where my dog Max wagged his tail. I sighed because even Max couldn’t make me feel better. Grandma tried to cheer me up, but I was still upset. I sat on the porch, looking at the sky, hoping something would make me happy again. After quite a while, just as I was about to go back to my bedroom in such low spirits, Grandpa suddenly showed up excitedly, with three shiny floating balloons in his hands. That was the kind of floating balloons I wanted.
It turned out that Grandpa bought those ne floating balloons to cheer me up. After we returned home Grandma recounted everything. Grandpa didn’t want to see my feeling of loss and disappointment, so he hurried into the nearby amusement park to buy me the balloons. Grandpa smiled as he gave me those balloons. I was SO moved that tears were welling up in my eyes, I tied it to Max’s collar and watched him run around with his new toy. Grandpa’s surprise made me smile again and showed me that good things can happen when you least expect them.
