Which’s more important: Your employee or your customer? A popular business expression is, “The customer is always right.” But you should never say “always”.
The owners of a restaurant in Alaska won international praise after protecting their autistic (自闭的) employee.
When the employee delivered the wrong food to a customer’s house, that customer reacted violently and unkindly. Even after the employee corrected the mistake, the customer continued to shout. And that same customer was even rude to the restaurant owners’ daughter. So the owners “fired” the customer.
Restaurant owners P.J. and Spiro Gialopsos have added the customer to the restaurant’s “Do Not Deliver” list. That customer is now persona non grata, Latin for “an unwelcome person”.
P.J. Gialopsos wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page, “You would think the majority of the population would have learned or at least heard about autism.”
Gialopsos said, “The employee has worked at the Little Italy Restaurant in Anchorage, Alaska, for two years. He was very upset about the angry customer.”
Gialopsos describes the employee as a seriously gifted university student who is curious about the world. She adds that the employee also has “an amazing personality, great sense of humor and a strong work ethic.”
“This employee is also one who will not have to deal with that rude customer anymore,” added Gialopsos.
Reached at home by reporters, Gialopsos says she is happy about the positive comments she and her husband are receiving. By Tuesday afternoon, her Facebook posting about the incident received more than 30,000 “Likes” and hundreds of positive comments. Comments and e-mails came from Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Namibia and the United Arab Emirates.
Gialopsos said she spent a couple of emotional days crying over the posts on the Facebook page. She adds that many parents from around the country who have children with autism wrote to her about the incident. “Their stories broke my heart,” she said. Another comment on Facebook that she found “striking” is a woman who thanked them for hiring someone who is “differently-abled”.
24. Why did the owners of the restaurant receive praise?
A. They would always put their customers first.
B. They had a “Do Not Deliver” list in their restaurant.
C. They fired a customer for hurting their autistic worker.
D. They promised to deliver food to their customers’ house.

D. He was considered as an unwelcome person.
26. Why did Gialopsos cry when she read the posts on Facebook?
A. Because she was moved by others’ comments.
B. Because children with autism were thankful to her.
C. Because nobody understood what she had done.
D. Because stories on the Facebook page hurt her feelings.
27. Where is the text most probably taken from?

Saying farewell to someone you love, even for a night, can be difficult, much less saying goodbye for a lifetime or forever in death. Juliet bid Romeo adieu (再见) for the evening with the words, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships.
Relationships are based on feelings, emotions, and passion. Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time. People spend time with the people they like. The more one person likes another person, the closer the relationship becomes. Each person in the relationship receives an emotional benefit from knowing the other person.
Saying goodbye means separating from the people who make up a significant part of your emotional identity. Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company.
The sweet side of saying goodbye is the emotional fulfillment of being in a close relationship. The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings. We seek the love and comfort of other people. Loneliness devastates the human condition and leads to sadness. Sad people will do anything they can to find fulfilling relationships. Likewise, happy people will do anything they can to maintain or enhance relationships. Herein lies the essential point of the emotional problem.
The more intense relationships become, the more devastating the emotional loss that is felt upon separation. The exhilaration of relationships cannot be truly measured without experiencing the overwhelming loss of a deep emotional connection.
Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. If it doesn’t hurt to say goodbye, perhaps it wasn’t worth saying hello.
28. Which of the word group can create the same effect as “sweet sorrow”?
A. icy cold B. clicking sound C. deafening silence D. endless speech
29. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Saying goodbye is unavoidable in our daily life.
B. The companion of close friends can lessen sorrow.
C. A person’s identity is connected with relationship.
D. Separation is the sorrowful part of saying goodbye.
30. What gives a person emotional satisfaction in social life?
A. Making more communication with others.
B. Building deep emotional connections with others.
C. Comforting friends with love and intense feelings.
D. Being a thoughtful person by standing in others’ shoes.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Sweet sorrow is very common in close relationships.
B. The pain of separation is the measure of relationships.
C. Human beings are eager to get emotional fulfillment.
D. Happiness is meaningless without sadness to compare it.

Bricks are one of the oldest known building materials, dating back thousands of years. But researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have found a new use for bricks: as energy storage units. A team of engineers and chemists have found a way to transform an ordinary house brick into a pseudo-battery — allowing it to conduct and store electricity. The bricks are powerful enough to illuminate(点亮)an LED light bulb and cost only about $ 3 to make.
“I love the idea of adding value to things that are inexpensive, things that are affordable, things that we kind of take for granted, ”said Julio D’Arcy, an assistant professor of chemistry at Washington University and one of the researchers on this project.
The brick battery relies on the reddish pigment(色素)known as iron oxide, or rust, that gives red bricks their color. The scientists pumped the bricks with several gases that react with iron oxide to produce a network of plastic fibers. These microscopic fibers coat the empty spaces inside the bricks — and conduct electricity.
“What we’re trying to do is: we’re trying to make specialized plastics that are only used on the nano(纳米)scale — where we use very little of the plastic, and we can actually insert that plastic inside construction materials. ” The study is in the journal Nature Communications.
In the future, D’Arcy says, a brick wall could potentially serve a double purpose: providing structural support and storing electricity generated from renewable energy sources, such as solar panels.
The technology is still at least a few years away from being ready for the commercial market. And right now the energy storage capacity of the bricks is still pretty low — about 1 percent of a lithium battery. But the team is now testing ways to improve brick performance — because it looks like you can teach an old brick new tricks.
32. What appeals to Julio D’Arcy listing bricks as their subjects?
A. Their low expense. B. Their common existence.
C. Their additional value. D. Their internal composition.
33. What is the last step of making a brick conduct electricity?
A. Pump the brick with gases.
B. Color the brick red.
C. Produce microscopic fibers.
D. Cover its inner vacancy with microscopic fibers.
34. What will the future bricks be like according to the passage?
A. Construction materials possessing low energy storage capacity.
B. Construction materials generating renewable energy resources.
C. Construction materials used for electricity storage.
D. Construction materials with built-in common plastic.
35. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the technology?
A. Skeptical. B. Objective.
C Conservative. D. Controversial.

It was a cold winter Monday morning. Manu, an eight-year-old, was sleeping comfortably in his bedroom upstairs. Mondays are usually very difficult for him after a weekend break from his school.
“Manu, wake up!” shouted Manu’s mother, Akhila. Manu pulled the blanket over himself and pretended to ignore his mother’s repeated attempts to wake him up.
“Manu! Please wake up! It’s already 6 o’clock and your school bus will be here by 7 o’clock.” Manu continued sleeping. Finally, Akhila walked up to the bedroom. “Manu, wake up! It’s time you at least learned to wake up on time and do your morning chores without so much effort from my side.” said his mother.
Finally, Manu got out of bed and started getting ready for school lazily. The school bus was already honking(按喇叭) in front of his house while Manu was brushing his teeth. Akhila requested the driver to wait for a few minutes. She quickly helped Manu get ready and helped him get to the school bus.
“Thank God. Manu did not miss his bus today!” She sighed. Akhila is really concerned about her son. Manu will not do anything on time whether it is walking up in the morning or any of his daily tasks. It is getting very difficult for Akhila to get her son to be disciplined.
Akhila thought to herself, “I need to work out a plan to help him to be self-disciplined.” Repeated advice and warnings had not changed him.
Manu was back from school at 4 o’clock. Akhila asked him to finish his homework first. Manu, as usual, ignored his mother and continued playing with his pet dog. Finally, with a lot of effort, the mother helped him complete his homework. Manu had his maths test the next day.
The next day everything was usually expected and there was no effort from Akhila to wake up her son. The time was seven and Akhila had still made no effort to wake up Manu. The school bus honked and Akhila, unlike her usual self, asked the bus driver to leave.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Manu finally woke up at around 9 o’clock.

“Their stories broke my heart” she said.

B. He didn’t get the food he ordered.
C. The owners’ daughter was very impolite.
D. He was considered as an unwelcome person.

A. Because she was moved by others’ comments.
B. Because children with autism were thankful to her.
C. Because nobody understood what she had done.
D. Because stories on the Facebook page hurt her feelings.

29 What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A Saying goodbye is unavoidable in our daily life.
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. B 31. B

A. Skeptical. B. Objective.
C. Conservative. D. Controversial.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. C 35. B

These microscopic fibers coat the empty spaces inside the bricks — and conduct electricity.”(砖块电池依赖于红色的颜料,氧化铁,或铁锈,使红砖呈现出它们的颜色。科学家们用几种气体与氧化铁反应生成一个塑料纤维网络。这些微小的纤维覆盖了砖块内部的空隙,并导电。)可知,第—步∶color the brick red;第二步∶pump the brick with gaes;第三步∶produce microscopicfibers;第四步∶coat the empty spaces inside the bricks,所以最后一步是用显微纤维覆盖砖块内部的空隙。故答案为D。
3.推理判断题。根据文中第五段中“In the future, D’Arcy says, a brick wall could potentially serve a double purpose: providing structural support and storing electricity generated from renewable energy sources, such as solar panels.”( D’Arcy说:“在未来,砖墙可能有双重用途: 提供结构支撑和储存可再生能源产生的电力,比如太阳能电池板。”)可知,未来的砖墙是能够贮存电力的建筑材料。选项C符合题意。故选C。
4.推理判断题。结合最后一段“The technology is still at least a few years away from being ready for the commercial market. And right now the energy storage capacity of the bricks is still pretty low”(这项技术至少还需要几年才能投入商业市场。

Manu will not do anything on time, whether it is walking up in the morning or any of his daily tasks.
The next day, everything was usually expected and there was no effort from Akhila to wake up her son. The time was seven and Akhila had still made no effort to wake up Manu. The school bus honked and Akhila, unlike her usual self, asked the bus driver to leave.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:

Paragraph 2:
Manu quickly got ready for school without any effort from his mother.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Manu finally woke up at around 9 o’clock. He looked at the clock and ran to the kitchen, crying out, “Mom! Why didn’t you wake me up? I am really late for school.” He couldn’t stop crying. “I have a maths test today and Madam Mangat will punish me if I miss her class and the test!” Madam Mangat was the strictest teacher in Manu’s school. “Mom, what should I do now? Please help. I promise I will wake up every day on time.” Akhila could no longer see her son crying and said, “Just promise me one more thing that you will do your daily task on time without pestering you to do it.” “Sure Mom! I promise!” Akhila told him she would send him to school and Mrs. Mangat would give him another chance to take the test. Manu hugged his mother. “Mom! Thank you.”
Manu quickly got ready for school without any effort from his mother. On the way to the school, there was silence in the car but a smile on Akhila’s face. The scene the next day at their house was a little different. At 6, Akhila walked out of her room, only to find Manu packing his schoolbag! Everything ready, he went up to Akhila and took her hand, saying, “Mom, I will give the driver a surprise today.” Hearing the smile in his voice, Akhila nodded approvingly and kissed him on the forehead. That morning, no hurry, no pestering and pampering, no continuous honking. It was the first time that Manu had tasted the fruit of discipline. He would taste it every day!
