Its windows displayed a range of household items like candles, lamps and chairs. But this shop differs from other shops. Each item in the shop was generously donated by local businesses and priced in terms of volunteer hours that the purchaser would contribute to nearby charities. The suggested number of hours required to purchase each item was clearly displayed on its price tag, Calling itself the Kinder Shop, this store has transformed the concept of kindness into a practical project that genuinely impacts the lives of locals. The nature of the store lies in its devotion to assisting the county’s charitable organizations and community groups, which rely on the invaluable work of volunteers to fulfill their vital missions. The first customer Sara Talebaoui paid for her purchases, including a table and several chairs set for her garden, by volunteering for a total of 24 hours for several local charities. “This is indeed my lucky day. I had had no knowledge of this event before and couldn’t believe it when I was informed that all these lovely things are being offered in a special way, ” Sara told Cumbria Crack. “I am a bit of a history fan, so working for English Heritage is absolutely a golden opportunity for me. ” The Kinder Shop has opened doors for people to participate in charitable activities, enabling them to make a practical impact on their community. Bramble House Hair Salon in the nearby town of Keswick was inspired to host a “pay-with-kindness” day. During the activity, individuals who spent 15 minutes collecting trash in the town center received a free haircut as a gesture of appreciation. “What we thought would be a one-off (一次的) event looks as if it could be the start of something really special,” said Des Moore, CEO of the Cumberland Building Society, “We believe we can take the idea of kindness from Cumbria and spread it all around the UK. ” 4. I had had no knowledge of this event before and couldn’t believe it when I was informed that all these lovely things are being offered in a special way, ” Sara told Cumbria Crack. “I am a bit of a history fan, so working for English Heritage is absolutely a golden opportunity for me. 根据文章倒数第二段“Bramble House Hair Salon in the nearby town of Keswick was inspired to host a “pay-with-kindness” day.(附近Keswick镇的Bramble House理发店受到启发举办了“慈善支付日”。)”以及最后一段Des Moore所说的话““We believe we can take the idea of kindness from Cumbria and spread it all around the UK. D。 C A new study published in the journal Science Advances finds that AI enhances creativity by increasing the novelty (新奇性) of story ideas as well as the “usefulness” of stories — their ability to engage the target audience and potential for publication. It finds that AI “professionalizes” stories, making them more enjoyable, more likely to have plot twists; better written and less boring. The researchers assigned the 300 study participants to three groups: The first group was allowed no AI help, the second group could use ChatGPT to provide a single three-sentence starting idea, and writers in the third group could choose from up to five AI-generated ideas for their inspiration. They then organized 600 people to judge how good the stories were, assessing them for novelty — whether the stories did something new or unexpected — and “usefulness” — how appropriate they were for the target audience, and whether the ideas could be developed and potentially published. They found that writers with the most access to AI experienced the greatest gains in their creativity, their stories scoring 9% higher for novelty compared with stories written without AI. Writers who used up to five AI-generated ideas also scored higher for emotional characteristics, producing stories that were better written, more enjoyable, less boring and funnier. The researchers evaluated the writers creativity using a Divergent Association Task (DAT) and found that more creative writers — those with the highest DAT scores—benefited least from generative AI ideas. On the contrary, less creative writers saw a greater increase in creativity. The researchers also calculated how similar the stories were to each other. They found a10. 7% increase in similarity between writers whose stories used one generative AI-idea, compared with the group that didn’t use AI. Anil Doshi, Assistant Professor at the UCL School of Management said, “While these results point to an increase in individual creativity, there is a risk of losing collective novelty. If the publishing industry were to embrace more generative AI-inspired stories, our findings suggest that the stories would become less unique and more similar to each other. ” 8. What is the first paragraph mainly about as for using AI to help write stories? A. Its limitation. B. Its background. C. Its principles. D. Its advantages. 9. How did the participants in the first group create their stories? A. By turning to AI for the beginning. B. By depending on their own imagination. C. By telling AI to give them some new ideas. D. By asking some professionals in real life for help. 10. Why was the Divergent Association Task (DAT) used? A. To figure out how creative the writers were. B. To find out how logical the writers’ stories were. C. To figure out how knowledgeable the writers were. D. To find out how appealing the writers’ stories were. 11. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. AI-inspired stories can ruin individual creativity. B. AI-inspired stories may benefit collective novelty. C. AI-inspired stories can be more varied and diverse. D. AI-inspired stories may have a likeness to each other. D 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第一段中“A new study published in the journal Science Advances finds that AI enhances creativity by increasing the novelty (新奇性) of story ideas as well as the “usefulness” of stories — their ability to engage the target audience and potential for publication. It finds that AI “professionalizes” stories, making them more enjoyable, more likely to have plot twists; better written and less boring.(发表在《科学进展》杂志上的一项新研究发现,人工智能通过增加故事创意的新奇性以及故事的‘实用性’——即故事吸引目标受众的能力和出版潜力——来提高创造力。 根据第二段中“The researchers assigned the 300 study participants to three groups: The first group was allowed no AI help(研究人员将300名研究参与者分成三组:第一组不允许使用人工智能帮助)”可知,第一组的参与者不允许使用人工智能,需要依靠自己的想象力来创作故事。 根据第五段中“The researchers evaluated the writers creativity using a Divergent Association Task (DAT) and found that more creative writers — those with the highest DAT scores—benefited least from generative AI ideas.(研究人员使用发散联想任务(DAT)来评估作家的创造力,发现更有创造力的作家——那些DAT得分最高的作家——从生成式人工智能创意中获益最少)”可知,使用发散联想任务(DAT)是为了弄清楚作家的创造力如何。故选A项。 根据最后一段中“Anil Doshi, Assistant Professor at the UCL School of Management said, ‘While these results point to an increase in individual creativity, there is a risk of losing collective novelty. If the publishing industry were to embrace more generative AI-inspired stories, our findings suggest that the stories would become less unique and more similar to each other.’(伦敦大学学院管理学院助理教授阿尼尔·多希说:‘虽然这些结果表明个人创造力有所提高,但存在失去集体新颖性的风险。 D The South-North Water Diversion Project has in the past decade diverted (使转向) 76. 7 billion cubic meters of water from the Yangtze River basin to the country’s drought-prone (易干旱的) northern regions, benefiting 185 million people, according to the Ministry of Water Resources. Initiated in the 1950s, the water diversion project is composed of three routes. The volume of diverted water is over 5, 000 times the water in the well-known West Lake in Zhejiang provincial capital, Hangzhou, which has a surface area of more than 6 square kilometers, and is more than 19 times the annual average water consumption in Beijing. After sustainable expansion of areas covered by the project, it now supplies water to 45medium and large-sized cities, Wang Daoxi, vice-minister of water resources, said on Thursday at a news conference marking the 10th anniversary of the operation of the project’s middle route. The news conference was organized by the State Council Information Office. “The project’s positive influence has progressively extended beyond medium and large cities to rural areas, leading to an increasing number of individuals getting benefits from it year after another, ” he said. The Yongding River, which dried up in 1996, for example, witnessed continuous water flow along its 865-kilometer course in August 2021. Over the last three years, the mother river of Beijing has maintained a year-round flow along its entire length. The vice-minister stressed that by capitalizing on the abundance of water resources in the south, the project has successfully cultivated economic collaboration between the northern and southern regions, driving development in the north. Without water from the south, those key economic development zones, major grain-producing areas and energy bases in the north would not have been able to produce that large amount of commodities, grains and energy and then transport them to regions all across the country, he noted. The water diverted by the project has supported a GDP growth of over16 trillion yuan ($2. 2 trillion) in the northern region, he added. As the most important and well-known of the three routes—due to its role in bringing water to Beijing— the first phase (阶段) of the middle route takes water from the Danjiangkou Reservoir, which spans Hubei and Henan provinces, and also benefits Henan and Hebei provinces and Tianjin along its route. The first phase of the eastern route, which serves Jiangsu and Shandong provinces, began operation in November 2013. The western route remains in the planning stage. 12. Why is the West Lake spoken of in the second paragraph? A. To show it is one of the most famous scenic spots worldwide. B. To show how much water has been diverted by the project. C. To show the annual average water consumption in Beijing. D. To show how large the surface area of the lake is. 13. Which can replace the underlined phrase “capitalizing on” in paragraph 6? A. Taking advantage of. B. Throwing light on. C. Figuring out. D. Appealing to. 14. Which region might be unrelated to the first phase of the middle route? A. Henan. B. Tianjin. C. Shandong. D. Hubei. 15. Which can serve as the best title for the news report? A. Northern regions benefit from water diversion project. B. South-North Water Diversion Project consists of three routes. C. Sustainable expansion of areas covered by water diversion project. D. First phase of middle route takes water from Danjiangkou Reservoir. B 13. A 14. C 15. 根据文章第二段“The volume of diverted water is over 5, 000 times the water in the well-known West Lake in Zhejiang provincial capital, Hangzhou, which has a surface area of more than 6 square kilometers, and is more than 19 times the annual average water consumption in Beijing.(调水总量是杭州西湖(湖面面积6平方公里)蓄水量的5000余倍,相当于北京年均用水量的19倍。)” 根据文章第六段画线短语后文的内容“the project has successfully cultivated economic collaboration between the northern and southern regions, driving development in the north.(该项目成功推动南北区域经济协作,带动北方发展。)” 故选A。 根据文章倒数第二段“As the most important and well-known of the three routes—due to its role in bringing water to Beijing— the first phase (阶段) of the middle route takes water from the Danjiangkou Reservoir, which spans Hubei and Henan provinces, and also benefits Henan and Hebei provinces and Tianjin along its route.(作为三条线路中最重要和最著名的一条——由于它在向北京供水——中线的第一期工程从横跨湖北和河南两省的丹江口水库取水,同时也惠及沿线的河南、河北和天津地区。)” 根据文章第一段“The South-North Water Diversion Project has in the past decade diverted (使转向) 76. 7 billion cubic meters of water from the Yangtze River basin to the country’s drought-prone (易干旱的) northern regions, benefiting 185 million people, according to the Ministry of Water Resources.(南水北调的工程在过去的十年里已经分流了76条河流。 Should we focus on our goal, or on the process? What happened to Brenda Martinez, a US Olympic runner, may provide us with the answer. She lost her balance in the 800-meter run and failed to qualify for the Olympics. ___16___ . “I just quickly let go of what happened in the 800m and got back to my routine, focusing on all the little things I could do that would give me the best chance of running well later in the week, ” she told New York Magazine. She said it was this mindset that led to her winning third place in the 1, 500-meter race about a week later to qualify for the Olympics. Instead of attaching herself to the goal of making the Olympic team, she concentrated on the process. ___17___ . Researchers from Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern found that overemphasizing goals based on measurable outcomes often leads to risk-taking, unethical (不道德的) behavior and reduced motivation. Their results were published in a Harvard Business School report titled Goals Gone Wild: The Systematic Side Effects of Over-Prescribing Goal Setting. When you become overly focused on achieving the goal, you may lose sight of your original purpose for accomplishing the goal in the first place. ___18___ . For example, some marathon runners experience what’s called the “post-race blues”. In addition, achieving your goal may cause you to drop the good habits that got you there in the first place. Dieters often experience this in what’s called “yo-yo dieting (体重循环) ” when they drop down to a desired weight. ___19___ . “After you set a goal, it’s best to shift your focus from the goal itself to the process that gives you the best chance of achieving it and to judge yourself based on how well you complete that process, ” columnist Brad Stulberg wrote on the website The Cut. Ultimately, changing your attention from the goal to the process will cause you to achieve little victories on your way to accomplishing long-term goals. Amy Cuddy, a Harvard Business School psychology professor, wrote, “ ___20___ , regardless of the measurable outcome. ”. A There are some problems! if you concentrate on goals B. They showed that opportunity favored the prepared mind. C. We can accept that it is not normal to feel down after a failure D. Instead of focusing on her failure, she prepared to win the next race. E. But then they gain all the weight back when they begin their bad habits again F. Focusing on this process leaves you with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment G. Another danger is actually completing the goal without setting a plan for what’s next 【答案】16. D 17. A 18. G 19. E 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“She lost her balance in the 800-meter run and failed to qualify for the Olympics.(她在 800 米跑中失去平衡,未能获得奥运会参赛资格)” 以及下文“I just quickly let go of what happened in the 800m and got back to my routine, focusing on all the little things I could do that would give me the best chance of running well later in the week(我很快就放下了800米比赛中发生的事情,回到了我的日常生活中,专注于我能做的所有小事情,这些事情会给我在本周晚些时候跑得很好的最好机会)”“She said it was this mindset that led to her winning third place in the 1, 500-meter race about a week later to qualify for the Olympics. Instead of attaching herself to the goal of making the Olympic team, she concentrated on the process 【17题详解】 根据下文“Researchers from Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern found that overemphasizing goals based on measurable outcomes often leads to risk-taking, unethical (不道德的) behavior and reduced motivation.(来自哈佛大学、宾夕法尼亚大学和西北大学的研究人员发现,过度强调基于可衡量结果的目标往往会导致冒险行为、不道德行为和动力下降)” 可知,过度专注目标会带来一些问题。 【18题详解】 根据上文“When you become overly focused on achieving the goal, you may lose sight of your original purpose for accomplishing the goal in the first place.(当你过度专注于实现目标时,你可能会忘记最初实现目标的初衷)” 以及下文 “For example, some marathon runners experience what’s called the “post-race blues”(例如,一些马拉松选手会经历所谓的 “赛后忧郁症”)” 可推知,此处是在阐述过度关注目标的另一个危险。 【19题详解】 根据上文“Dieters often experience this in what’s called “yo-yo dieting (体重循环) ” when they drop down to a desired weight.(节食者在达到理想体重时经常会经历所谓的 “体重循环”)”可推知,接下来会说节食者恢复坏习惯后体重反弹的情况。 【20题详解】 根据上文 “Ultimately, changing your attention from the goal to the process will cause you to achieve little victories on your way to accomplishing long-term goals.(最终,将你的注意力从目标转移到过程上,会让你在实现长期目标的道路上取得一些小胜利)”以及下文“regardless of the measurable outcome.(不管可衡量的结果如何)”可推知,此处应是说专注过程带来的积极影响。 My editor asked me to only use cash for a weekend to test whether it’s impossible or convenient to live without digital payments. Alisa became her family’s hero when she took immediate action during an emergency, which saved her mother’s life with the help of her neighbor, Mrs. Johnson. Ella, a 39-year-old single mother, began the day by sending her child, Alisa, to school. Having no idea what would happen, Ella was filled with anxiety. After all, it was the first day of a new school year for Alisa, a fresh start! On the way to the school, she repeatedly reminded Alisa to solve problems positively and fit in. Though worried, Ella had to wave goodbye to her daughter, watching her walk towards the school gate. The whole day was packed with housework. Ella tidied the house, washed clothes and prepared for the evening meal. As the school bell rang, signaling the end of the day, Ella picked Alisa up from school. On seeing Ella, Alisa couldn’t wait to hug her, sharing the school experiences. Chatting and laughing accompanied them all the way. Alisa’s innocent laughter was like Ella’s ray of sunshine. Approaching their home, they encountered Mrs. Johnson, a very kind and thoughtful housewife living in their neighborhood for many years. Mrs. Johnson often invited Ella and Alisa to her home and shared her homemade desserts and cookies. The two families developed a close relationship and Alisa liked to stay with Mrs. Johnson, who always brightened her days with optimism and timely help. After exchanging greetings, they went back to their own homes. On arriving home, Ella set out to prepare dinner. As the sun began to set, the house was full of a pleasant smell of cooking food. Ella and Alisa sat at the kitchen table when Ella’s body suddenly began to seize up (发僵) . She was sitting in a chair, looking up at the ceiling, and experiencing abnormal breathing. Upon entering Ella’s home, Mrs. Johnson found Ella on the floor, her body seizing up. “Call 911, Alisa, and stay on the line,” she instructed, her voice steady as she began first aid. Alisa, though scared, managed to relay the emergency to the operator, her mother’s lifeline. Within fifteen minutes, an ambulance got to Ella’s house. Ella was rushed to a hospital and she was treated there well. Ella finally came to herself in the hospital. She felt quite comfortable in the hospital. As she regained consciousness, she saw Alisa’s tearful face and Mrs. Johnson’s comforting presence. Apparently, there was relief on their faces. C A new study published in the journal Science Advances finds that AI enhances creativity by increasing the novelty (新奇性) of story ideas as well as the “usefulness” of stories — their ability to engage the target audience and potential for publication. D The South-North Water Diversion Project has in the past decade diverted (使转向) 76. 7 billion cubic meters of water from the Yangtze River basin to the country’s drought-prone (易干旱的) northern regions, benefiting 185 million people, according to the Ministry of Water Resources. Should we focus on our goal, or on the process? After all, it was the first day of a new school year for Alisa, a fresh start! On the way to the school, she repeatedly reminded Alisa to solve problems positively and fit in.
