The Chaná language, a native language of Argentina, was thought to be extinct for over 200 years. However, it has now been discovered that one man has been keeping it alive.
Unknown to the world, Blas Jaime, an 89 year old Argentinian man, has kept the language from dying out. Thanks to the efforts of linguist Viegas Barros, Jaime was discovered, and the pair have now authored a book together, dedicated to restoring the language.
Blas learnt the Chaná language from his mother, whose family has passed the language down through the generations. Growing up, Blas’s mother taught him the Chaná language and stories which she urged him to keep secret in order to “protect” them. Decades later when Blas retired he sought out other Chaná people to chat and share the stories with. However, he made the shocking discovery that no one else appeared to know the language. In fact, scholars had actually considered the language extinct since 1815.
Blas said, “I exist. I am here,” kicking off a new mission to preserve and bring the Chaná language back to life, while also helping to place the indigenous (本土的) group back on the map. Over the past two decades, Blas has worked closely with UNESCO to help preserve languages. Together with Viegas Barros, the pair have created a dictionary with over 1,000 words.
Argentina has a complex history that has led to a disconnection between modern-day Argentinians and their indigenous roots. However, Blas’ work has inspired many other indigenous people in Argentina to explore their ancestry and history. “Language is what gives you identity... If someone doesn’t have their language, they’re not a people,” said Blas.
Blas’s daughter Evangelina Jaime, has taken up the responsibility of preserving the Chaná language and culture learned from her father, ensuring that this vital piece of cultural heritage is not lost. Although the exact number of Chaná people remaining in Argentina is uncertain, the efforts of Evangelina and others like her are helping to keep the Chaná language and culture alive and flowering.
4. What took the language scholars by surprise?
A. The roots of the Chaná language.
B. The rediscovery of an extinct language.
C. The history of the modern-day Argentinians.
D. The existence of the indigenous Chaná people.
5. Why were Blas’ words mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To remind Argentinians to seek their roots.
B. To illustrate the wisdom of indigenous people.
C. To guarantee the conservation of a cultural heritage.
D. To promote the popularity of an endangered language.
6. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Most Argentinians will connect with their origins.
B. Evangelina is key to the spread of the Chaná language.
C. Few Chaná people participate in the preservation efforts.
D. The Chaná cultural heritage will survive and grow stronger.
7. Which of the following best describes Blas Jaime?
A. Strong-willed and sympathetic. B. Responsible and devoted.
C. Determined and talented. D. Warm-hearted and ambitious.
C
You want a potential partner to become attracted to you. If asked, should you say you’re interested in him or her? Perhaps, the best option would be to let him or her know you are interested. How can they know otherwise? Or perhaps, you should play a form of hard to get and tell him or her that you are not interested. After all, maybe we want more what we can’t have.
A wide range of research suggests that the better option would be to let him or her know you are interested. In short, we tend to like people who we know like us. But, interestingly, according to a recent research published in Psychological Science, an even better choice might be to not let the other person know one way or the other.
In this study participants viewed Facebook profiles (简介) of several people. Participants were told that the people in the profiles were either interested in them, not interested in them, or that it was unsure if they were interested in them.
Results found that people were more interested in the person in the Facebook profile if they thought the person was interested in them, than if they thought they were not. But, the Facebook profiles that were considered most attractive were the ones in which the profile’s owner may or may not have been interested in the participant.
We have all heard that playing hard to get can work, but we also know that this could backfire. And we all have heard that we tend to like people who like us, but we also know that a little mystery is appealing.
I imagine some readers at this point thinking, “God, this sounds like playing games. And, I hate that!” I am thinking the same thing, but I think it is important to realize these are first impressions and very early stages of attraction. At some point (dates later), not knowing where the other person stands could be incredibly frustrating. It would be interesting to see the effects of uncertainty on attraction in more long-term relationships.
8. According to the recent research, what is the most attractive response to show preference?
A. Expressing clear liking. B. Changing the subject.
C. Leaving it up in the air. D. Pretending to be uninterested.
9. What is the main function of paragraph 5 in the text?
A. To summarize the key findings of the study.
B. To discuss potential limitations of the research.
C. To compare different opinions on attraction strategies.
D. To provide a real-world application of the study results.
10. What is the author’s attitude toward the research findings?
A. Doubtful. B. Dismissive. C. Unclear. D. Approving.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Playing Hard to Get: Does It Work? B. Uncertainty Makes You More Attractive
C. Tips on Being Mysterious in a Relationship D. Secrets to a Healthy Long-term Relationship
D
Intermittent fasting (间歇性禁食) has taken off in popularity in recent years as an alternative to more traditional weight loss advice, including counting calories, which can be cumbersome and hard to sustain for some people. It can take different forms. One approach — called time-restricted eating — limits when people eat to a specific window of time, often around six to eight hours.
Some research suggests this can be successful for weight loss in the short term because people end up eating less, but it has been less clear how well it works over a longer stretch of time. A new study published Monday may have an answer.
The study, led by Krista Varady, a professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois Chicago, finds that intermittent fasting can indeed help people lose weight and keep it off over the course of a year. The amount of weight loss wasn’t dramatic — equivalent (相等的) to about 5% of body weight — but the findings are encouraging to researchers in the field, in part because they stress that people could keep this habit up over a long stretch of time.
Varady’s team recruited 90 adults with obesity (肥胖) from the Chicago area and randomly assigned them to one of three groups: One group could eat only between noon and 8 pm, another had to count calories and cut daily energy intake by 25%, and the third group didn’t make any changes to their eating.
The study found that those who did time-restricted eating lost, on average, about 10 pounds more than those in the control group, while those who counted their calories lost about 12 pounds more. The difference between the two groups wasn’t statistically significant. “The key take-away is that you can basically achieve the same amount of energy restriction by counting time instead of counting calories,” says Varady.
12. What does the underlined word “cumbersome” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Efficient. B. Unhealthy. C. Complicated. D. Flexible.
13. What does the new study aim to determine regarding intermittent fasting?
A. Whether it is useful to reduce obesity rate.
B. Its impact on calorie tracking over a year.
C. Its effectiveness for long-term weight loss.
D. Whether it is better than traditional diets.
14. How did the researchers conduct their study?
A. By surveying the eating habits of adults with obesity.
B. By keeping track of the participants’ calorie intake.
C. By measuring the body weight of people in Chicago.
D. By analyzing data from the participants.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Intermittent fasting is as effective as counting calories.
B. Time-restricted eating is statistically insignificant.
C. Intermittent fasting is superior to traditional diets.
D. Counting calories is easier than counting time.

The Impact of Social Media on Teenagers’ Mental Health
In today’s digital age, social media has become an inseparable part of teenagers’ lives. ____16____ This essay argues that while social media has certain benefits, its negative impacts on teenagers’ psychological well-being outweigh the positives.
Firstly, social media fosters (助长) a culture of comparison and insecurity. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are filled with carefully selected images of “perfect” lives, leading many teenagers to feel inferior to them. Studies show that too much exposure to idealized lifestyles can cause anxiety, low self-esteem, and body image issues. For instance, a 2022 survey by the American Psychological Association revealed that 60% of teens feel pressured to meet unrealistic beauty standards online. ____17____
Secondly, social media addiction ruins real-life interactions and sleep patterns. Many teenagers spend hours going through feeds (推文), sacrificing face-to-face communication and physical activities. The dopamine (多巴胺) — driven design of apps like Snap-chat encourages addictive use, often resulting in loneliness and poor academic performance. ____18____ Lack of sleep, linked to platforms’ “always-on”culture, worsens mood instability and depression among adolescents.
____19____ Parents and schools should educate teenagers about digital awareness, emphasizing critical thinking and time management. Platforms themselves must prioritize user well-being by limiting addictive features and promoting authentic content.
In conclusion, while social media connects people globally, its risks to teenagers’ mental health cannot be ignored. ____20____
A. To reduce these harms, balanced usage is significant.
B. However, it is important to acknowledge social media’s positive aspects.
C. While it offers connection, its effects on mental health remain a heated topic.
D. Besides, late-night screen time affects sleep, which is crucial for mood control.
E. Moreover, teenagers can enhance their academic performance through social media.
F. This constant comparison creates a harmful cycle of self-doubt and emotional suffering.
G. By fostering awareness and encouraging mindful usage, society can help the young employing technology’s benefits without sacrificing their emotional well-being.

Sally’s birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled her heart was now replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning eleven was a big deal, and she had always celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by her friends. However, this year was different. The burden of excessive homework and her parents’ struggling business weighed heavily on her, forcing Sally to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it was an event she enjoyed dearly every year.
One day, during break, her best friend, Jane, with a curious look in her eyes, approached. “Are you going to have a birthday party this year?” Jane asked, sensing Sally’s sadness.
“No,” Sally sighed and replied sadly, “There’s just too much going on and my parents are going through financial difficulties.”
She smiled weakly, trying to conceal her immense disappointment and stress, but Jane saw through her pretence (假装) easily. Jane nodded thoughtfully and did not say anything. After the break, Sally saw her talking to one of their classmates, Sarah, secretively. Curious, Sally went over to them, but as soon as Jane saw her, she quickly walked away. Sally was startled by Jane’s strange actions and turned towards Sarah.
“What did she say?” Sally asked.
However, Sarah simply shrugged (耸肩) and walked away with Jane, leaving Sally standing there, feeling left out and anxious.
“What is happening?” Sally wondered anxiously, “Are they keeping something from me?”
As Sally’s birthday drew nearer, Jane was often found chatting softly with her other classmates. Whenever Sally went over to them, they would just walk away or tell her that they were talking about a secret which Sally was not allowed to know. “Jane has never kept secrets from me before.” Sally thought. Her heart sank. Even her friends were distancing themselves from her! She swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment, desperately trying to figure out what was happening. Why were her friends distancing themselves from her? And what were they hiding?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On the day of Sally’s birthday, she went to school and found her classroom in total darkness.

Blas’s daughter, Evangelina Jaime, has taken up the responsibility of preserving the Chaná language and culture learned from her father, ensuring that this vital piece of cultural heritage is not lost.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. B

In this study, participants viewed Facebook profiles (简介) of several people.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. B

And we all have heard that we tend to like people who like us, but we also know that a little mystery is appealing.(我们都听说过欲擒故纵这一招可能会奏效,但我们也知道这可能会适得其反。而且我们都听说过,我们往往会喜欢那些喜欢我们的人,但我们也明白,保留一点神秘感很有吸引力)”可知,文章第5段的主要功能是比较关于吸引策略的不同观点。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“I am thinking the same thing, but I think it is important to realize these are first impressions and very early stages of attraction. At some point (dates later), not knowing where the other person stands could be incredibly frustrating. It would be interesting to see the effects of uncertainty on attraction in more long-term relationships.(我也有同样的想法,但我认为重要的是要认识到这些只是第一印象,处于吸引力产生的最初阶段。在某些时候(比如之后的约会中),不知道对方的立场可能会让人极其沮丧。看看不确定性在更长久的恋爱关系中对吸引力会产生怎样的影响,这会很有意思)”可知,作者认为认识到这些是第一印象和吸引的早期阶段很重要,并且认为看不确定性在更长期的关系中对吸引的影响会很有趣,由此可推知,作者对这个研究结果是认可的,持赞成态度。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“You want a potential partner to become attracted to you. If asked, should you say you’re interested in him or her?
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. A

根据最后一段“The study found that those who did time-restricted eating lost, on average, about 10 pounds more than those in the control group, while those who counted their calories lost about 12 pounds more. The difference between the two groups wasn’t statistically significant. “The key take-away is that you can basically achieve the same amount of energy restriction by counting time instead of counting calories,” says Varady. (研究发现,限时进食的人平均比对照组多减重约10磅,而计算卡路里的人多减重约12磅。两组之间的差异在统计上不显著。Varady说:“关键的是,你可以通过计算时间来达到与计算卡路里相同的能量限制效果。”)”可知,从最后一段可以推断出间歇性禁食和计算卡路里一样有效。故选A。

【答案】16. C 17. F 18. D 19. A 20. G

“No” Sally sighed and replied sadly, “There’s just too much going on and my parents are going through financial difficulties.”

【答案】范文
On the day of Sally’s birthday, she went to school and found her classroom in total darkness. A wave of confusion washed over her as she stepped hesitantly into the room, her heart pounding. She reached for the light switch, but before her hand could find it, a chorus of voices broke the silence. “Surprise!”, her classmates, led by Jane, jumped out from all sorts of hiding places. As the room flooded with light, Sally’s eyes widened in surprise and disbelief. The classroom was decorated with balloons and streamers, a beautiful cake sat on the teacher’s desk, and in the corner, a pile of presents waited to be unwrapped.
The unexpected surprise brought tears to Sally’s eyes. She turned towards Jane, who was grinning from ear to ear. “We knew you couldn’t have a party this year, so we decided to bring the party to you,” Jane said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. The cloud of confusion lifted from Sally’s mind as she realized that her friends hadn’t been distancing themselves from her, they were planning this surprise all along. The sadness that had been looming over her birthday disappeared, replaced with joy and gratitude. As she cut the cake and opened her presents, Sally realized that this was indeed a grand birthday party, just like the ones she used to have.
