The other day, my friends and I had a discussion about the most useful invention of all time. There were many good ideas— the train, the car, and the airplane. They’re all useful, but for an everyday, useful invention, I vote for the air conditioner. I live in Taipei, and during the summer the temperature can be 35°C or higher. It’s so hot! I’m not joking when I say that, without an air conditioner, people here couldn’t work or study. The weather is so hot that it can make you feel unwell.
By: Jorge on Sunday, April 14
I don’t know if I agree with you, Cindy. For me, the most useful invention of all time is surely the Internet. We can now reach people and do business faster. I own a clothing store in Mexico City, and there’s a lot of competition. I also have a website. Now, people from all over the world can buy my clothing. With the Internet, I can keep in touch with friends and family in Mexico and around the world. It’s faster than usual ways, and it’s cheaper than using the phone!
By: Kazuo on Monday, April 15
Jorge, I also think that the Internet is useful. But, in my opinion, there is an “invention” that is even more important, and that’s electricity. Of course, this isn’t a man-made invention, but without people like Benjamin Franklin and Alessandro Volta, we wouldn’t have learned how to use it. And without electricity, many of the world’s most important modern inventions wouldn’t work.
16.What’s the main topic of the posts?
A.Different kinds of transportation. B.The most useful inventions.
C.The importance of the Internet. D.The history of electricity.
17.Which invention does Cindy think is the most useful?
A.The train. B.The car. C.The airplane. D.The air conditioner.
18.How does the Internet help Jorge?
① open a clothing store ② take part in competitions
③ do business faster ④ keep in touch with family and friends
A.①② B.①③ C.②④ D.③④
19.Why does Kazuo think electricity is the most useful invention?
A.It isn’t really man-made. B.Benjamin Franklin invented it.
C.We have learned how to use it. D.Many machines can’t work without it.
20.Who will probably agree that communication is the most important?
A.Cindy. B.Jorge. C.Kazuo. D.Volta.

Dear TianTian,
Welcome to the world! Your mom and I are so excited to see who you will become.
When your sister was born, we wrote a letter about the world we hoped she and now you will grow up in a world with better education, __________, stronger communities, and greater equality. We wrote that with all the advances in science and technology, your generation should live much better lives than ours, and we have a responsibility to do our part to make that happen. Even though headlines often focus on what’s wrong, we still believe these positive trends will win out. We’re optimists (乐观主义者) about your generation and the future.
But rather than write about growing up, we want to talk about childhood. The world can be a serious place. That’s why it’s important to make time to go outside and play.
You will be busy when you’re older, so I hope you take time to smell all the flowers and put all the leaves you want in your bucket now. I hope you read your favorite Dr. Seuss books so many times and hope you start inventing your own stories about the Vipper of Vipp. I hope you ride the carousel (旋转木马) with Max until you’ve tamed (驯服) every color horse. I hope you run as many laps around our living room and yard as you want. And then I hope you take a lot of naps. I hope you’re a great sleeper. And I hope even in your dreams you can feel how much we love you. Childhood is magical. You only get to be a child once, so don’t spend it worrying too much about the future. You’ve got us for that, and we’ll do everything we possibly can to make sure the world is a better place for you and all children in your generation. TianTian, we love you so much and were so excited to go on this adventure with you. We wish you a life of joy, love and the same hope you give us.
Love,
Mom and Dad

Yang Yu, better known by his funny nickname “Jiaozi” (which means “dumpling”), is the director behind the hugely popular Chinese cartoon movie Ne Zha Ⅱ. His amazing journey from studying medicine to becoming a famous filmmaker teaches us how important it is to follow our dreams.
Jiaozi was born in Sichuan, China. Like many young people, he first chose a “safe” way to please his family. He went to college to study medicine. But deep down, he loved drawing and cartoon. After finishing school, he worked at a hospital but felt unhappy. One day, he made a brave choice—he left his job and stayed at home for three years to learn cartoon by himself. To save money, he ate cheap dumplings almost every day. This habit earned him the nickname “Jiaozi”, and be kept it to remind him of his humble (卑微的) beginnings.
Making Ne Zha 2 took five hard years. Jiaozi’s team was small, and they didn’t have much money. The team spent months testing new computer skills to make the fire effects look real and exciting.
The movie became a huge success, earning over 5 billion yuan and breaking China’s box office records. People loved how Jiaozi mixed ancient Chinese stories with modern topics—like choosing your own way in life. The grumpy (脾气暴躁的) but kind-hearted Ne Zha became a symbol for misunderstood youth.
Jiaozi’s story isn’t just about making cartoons. It’s about courage to change. “If you really believe in your dream,” he says. “work hard—even for 10 years.” Now, he encourages young artists to trust themselves. His success proves that common people can do extraordinary (非凡的) things if they never give up.

C.To learn drawing skills. D.To create cartoon stories.
27.What does the nickname “Jiaozi” actually mean?

C.His difficult early days. D.His cooking talent.
28.What was the biggest technical challenge in making Ne Zha Ⅱ?
A.Designing characters’ clothes. B.Finding voice actors for the movie.
C.Raising enough money for production. D.Creating real fire effects for Ne Zha’s wheels.
29.After reading this article, what kind of person do you think Jiaozi is?
A.Brave and hard-working. B.Grumpy but kind-hearted.
C.Brave and kind-hearted. D.Grumpy but brave.
30.What can we learn from Dumpling’s story?
A.Making cartoons need lots of money. B.Family support will surely lead to success.
C.Never give up makes dreams possible. D.Medical knowledge helps filmmaking.

The Double Ninth Festival, also named the Chongyang Festival, falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. On this day, people would like to drink chrysanthemum (菊花) wine. The Chinese word for wine is Jiu, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word for “long”, which means “forever”. Another special food for this festival is chrysanthemum cakes. The Chinese word for cake is Gao, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word “high”, showing great progress at work and in daily life.
It is hard to say when these customs began. But there are many stories about the festival. As was recorded in a historical book of the sixth century, there lived a man named Huan Jing. He was learning the magic arts from Fei Changfang. One day, the two people were climbing a mountain. Fei Changfang suddenly stopped and looked very upset. He told Huan Jing, “On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, a disaster will come to your hometown. You must go home at once. Remember to make a red bag for each of your family members. Then you must all tie your bags to your arms, leave home quickly and climb to the top of a mountain. Most importantly, you must all drink some chrysanthemum wine. Only by doing so can your family members be safe.”
On hearing this, Huan Jing rushed home and asked his family to do as his teacher said. The whole family climbed a nearby mountain and did not return until the evening. When they got back home, they found all their animals dead, including chickens, sheep, dogs and even the ox.
Since then, climbing a mountain and drinking chrysanthemum wine became the traditional activities of the Double Ninth Festival.

A.Different kinds of transportation. B.The most useful inventions.

Love,
Mom and Dad
