Recently, I took him for a classic English afternoon tea at The Ritz Hotel. The thought of showing him a piece of authentic British life excited me for weeks, so when we finally sat down in the Ritz’s elegant tearoom, with the sound of a pianist in the background, I was thrilled.
I looked at the shiny silver tea stand topped with finely cut sandwiches, freshly baked scones (烤饼), and mouthwatering pastries and teacakes. I was ready to dig in. Then I looked at Dad and a trace of nervousness flashed across his face. He carefully copied what I ate and how to use the knife and fork, and from time to time anxiously looked up at the waiter in his bow tie who was serving our table.
When we got to the scones, Dad took a big bite and remarked how delicious it was. He asked me to explain how the British eat scones, so I supplied him with details about the custom of breaking scones into small pieces, spreading cream and strawberry jam on top, before consuming each piece in one mouthful.
“Oh, why did you not tell me earlier?” Dad’s face turned red in embarrassment, suddenly realizing his mistake. For the rest of the scones session, he busied himself with neatly spreading the cream and jam like an obedient (听话的) child.
Suddenly, I felt a complex mixture of happiness, sadness and loneliness. Growing up, Dad was my hero, my mountain. I still remember flying into his arms after school at the kindergarten gate. Through the sound of his voice, I learned to feel and understand the world.
After moving to London alone, I have learned to achieve academic grades, found a job, and started a new life all by myself. But I did not fully realize how much I had grown up, until I saw how dependent Dad was on me in London. Although he is still a mountain in my heart, I realized I have in the meantime built a strong mountain of my own. And by being away from Dad’s protective wings I have come to understand more of myself and to find my own place in the world.

After a sleepy Saturday morning on my son Andrew’s 15th birthday, I drive him to a shoe shop near our home in Toronto to get a pair of sandals. We time the trip to arrive right when the store opens. Andrew has difficulties speaking and prefers to go shopping when it’s not busy.
“Size 41 of those black slip-on sandals, please,” I tell the two clerks at the shop when we arrive. Andrew slips his socked feet into the shoes. A perfect fit. We box them up and pay. Then I hold up his letter board.
For 10 years, Andrew has used a picture chart to communicate. The images represent important and common words: people, places, food, greetings and activities. Years ago, we discovered that Andrew could communicate more than just his basic needs with a letter board. He can point to the letters and spell out words, statements, thoughts.
Therefore, instead of using the “thank you” symbol on his picture chart, Andrew points to each letter, one by one: “Thank you.” When we look up, they are wide-eyed. One of the staff speaks up, “Can I ask you what that is? Because I have a brother-in-law who doesn’t talk.”
This is what happens when we show up — by showing our true selves — in our strengths and our “scantiness”. We invite others into our humanness, and we allow them to share theirs. “Let me give you my contact information. I will teach you this method,” I continue. I ask the shop assistant about his brother-in-law, Jason is 30 and doesn’t speak, but he can do a lot for himself. Still, no one really knows him.
“Amazing!” I say. “We’ve met people who started using this method when they were 50 or 15 or five! Andrew, what do you think?” Andrew starts pointing to letters: “Tell Jason he will change everyone’s opinion of him in 26 letters.”
We are all moved, inspired, and thrilled. “Wow,” the clerk says, “Thank you.” Andrew smiles. This is how it happens, how we impact another person’s life in a split second: by delicately leading with our own.
8.What do we know about Andrew from the first two paragraphs?
A.He enjoys shopping on weekends.
B.He has a habit of arriving on time.
C.He likes less crowded places better.
D.He prefers wearing sandals with socks on.
9.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A.Introduce a new topic. B.Give an example.
C.Show a solution. D.Provide a reason.
10.What does the underlined word “scantiness” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Advantages. B.Weaknesses. C.Characters. D.Embarrassments.
11.What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Accept disabled people as they are.
B.Respect a man and he will do the more.
C.You will succeed as long as you keep doing it.
D.A little kindness goes a long way.
根据第一段中的“Andrew has difficulties speaking and prefers to go shopping when it’s not busy.(安德鲁在说话方面有困难,并且喜欢在不太忙的时候去购物。)”
根据第三段,“For 10 years, Andrew has used a picture chart to communicate. The images represent important and common words: people, places, food, greetings and activities. Years ago, we discovered that Andrew could communicate more than just his basic needs with a letter board. He can point to the letters and spell out words, statements, thoughts.(十年来,安德鲁一直使用图片图表进行交流。这些图像代表重要的和常见的词语:人物、地点、食物、问候和活动。多年前,我们发现安德鲁可以通过字母板传达的不仅仅是他的基本需求。他可以指向字母拼写出单词、陈述和想法。)”这一段作者提供了关于安德鲁如何使用字母板的具体例子,以展示他的沟通能力。故选B项。
10.词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“This is what happens when we show up — by showing our true selves — in our strengths and our “scantiness”.(当我们以真实的自我出,,展现我们的优势和“scantiness”时,这就是会发生的事情。)”
从最后一段中的“We are all moved, inspired, and thrilled. “Wow,” the clerk says, “Thank you.” Andrew smiles. 【2023-2024学年福建省厦门市高一下学期期末】You might have thought that the world’s longest-serving lifeguard would be found on a sunny beach in California or Australia. But on a rainy British spring day, the Guinness World Records people held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset spot when he was 16, meaning he has been coming to the aid of users of the sandy beaches here for 58 years. “It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working on the beach, which I love, and you’re helping people. What could be better?”
Lewis said friends used to rib (逗弄) him that his colleagues in Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) were half his age. “Now they say they’re a third my age,” he said. But he is still fighting fit. RNLI lifeguards must complete a 400-metre pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25-metre pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim continuously in under 50 seconds. And run 200 metres along the beach in under 40 seconds. The swimming fitness tests are still reasonably easy for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month with no wetsuit.
Lewis had ever suffered anxiety and depression. But he believes his training and the time spent on the beach relieved this. He now helps to train young lifeguards. Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out exciting rescues. “I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.”
4.Why does Lewis consider his job the best?
A.It enables him to get an award. B.It matches his interests and values.
C.It allows him to work at an old age. D.It wins him the beachgoers’ respect.
5.What is the purpose of the figures mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To show Lewis’ physical fitness. B.To analyze lifeguards’ safety risks.
C.To measure Lewis’ performance. D.To stress the training requirements.
6.What can we learn from Lewis’ words in the last paragraph?
A.Good advice sells for nothing. B.It’s never too late to rescue people.
C.Prevention is better than cure. D.Actions speak louder than words.
7.Which of the following best describes Lewis?
A.Devoted and creative. B.Knowledgeable and brave.
C.Kind and determined. D.Emotional and adventurous.
【答案】4.B 5.A 6.C 7.C
根据文章第一段内容“‘It’s the best job in the world,’ he said. ‘You’re working on the beach, which I love, and you’re helping people. What could be better?’(“这是世界上最好的工作,”他说。“你在海滩上工作,这是我喜欢的,你在帮助别人。还有比这更好的吗?”)”可知,在他看来,这份工作让他在喜欢的地方帮助到别人。由此可推知,他认为自己的这份工作是最棒的是因为这份工作符合他的兴趣和价值观。故选B项。
5.推理判断题。根据文章第二段内容“RNLI lifeguards must complete a 400-metre pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25-metre pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim continuously in under 50 seconds. And run 200 metres along the beach in under 40 seconds. The swimming fitness tests are still reasonably easy for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month with no wetsuit.(RNLI的救生员必须在7.5分钟内游完400米泳池。 故选A项。
根据文章末尾段落内容“He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out exciting rescues. ‘I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.’(他说,提供建议以防止人们陷入麻烦比进行令人兴奋的救援更可取。“我希望整个夏天都不用去救任何人。”)”可知,在他看来,比起救援,能够提供建议以防止人们在这里陷入麻烦是更可取的。因此,从他的话里可以推知,在海边最好能做到“预防胜于治疗”或“防患于未然”。故选C项。
7.推理判断题。根据文章第一段内容“Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset spot when he was 16, meaning he has been coming to the aid of users of the sandy beaches here for 58 years.(现年74岁的Lewis 16岁时就开始在多塞特郡的海滩上工作,这意味着58年来他一直在帮助这里的沙滩使用者。)” 以及“All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month with no wetsuit.(整个冬天,他每个月都在不穿潜水服的情况下进行3000米的海水游泳。)”

When I started skating at 6 years old, I liked Dorothy Hamill so much that I had a Dorothy doll and would put it on the edge of the rink(溜冰场) to watch me skate on the ice. There was something meaningful to me about having the doll next to me as I would jump, fall and pick myself back up again. It was there inspiring me to never give up.
Fourteen years later, I followed Dorothy’s path to become the first American woman figure skater (花样滑冰运动员) to win Olympic gold since she did it in 1976. And now, three decades later, Barbie (芭比娃娃) is honoring me with my own doll as the newest addition to its InspiringWomen Series.
Six-year-old me never would have imagined I’d be where I am today. But I made it because Iwas able to discover my dreams as a young girl. My Dorothy doll had the power — it was not just a piece of decoration on the ice rink; it inspired me to dream big and work hard.
When I achieved my dream, I felt like giving children chances to find their dreams and pursue them. Through working with children and raising my own girls, I quickly realized a child’s success in life startswith a school education and an interest in reading. A book is more than just a book, just like what the Dor-thy doll meant to me. That’s where dreams are born. When children open up a book, they open up their world.
So in 1996, I established Always Dream, a nonprofit organization that aims to improve children’s reading by providing access to books and encouraging families to read together. If I can do more for other young girls, not only with my Barbie Inspiring Women doll, but also with whatI’m doing now, that just might be the biggest gold medal of all.
4.What effect did the Dorothy doll have on the author?
A.It earned her respect. B.It inspired her to move on.

Adelaide schoolgirl Tilly Williams, aged 11, has broken a world distance running record, beating other girls who were eight years older than her to run 5000m in just 17 minutes and 22.7 seconds.
The Parkside Primary student beat the previous record by 19 seconds, making her the fastest distance runner under the age of 19 across 60 countries. Tilly started running just two years ago and has already shot straight to the top. When some of her friends informed her of the international record, she decided to give it a try while competing at the SA State Championships. As one of the driest deserts on Earth, the Atacama is a bucket-list destination for star-observing tourists who come for some of the clearest view of the night sky. As its rocky landscape is much like Mars, the desert has even attracted the attention of NASA, which has tested rovers there.
But the Atacama has also got attention as one of the world's fast-growing dumps (垃圾场) of used clothes, thanks to the rapid mass production of inexpensive clothing known as fast fashion. The phenomenon has created so much waste that the UN calls it “an environmental and social emergency”. The challenge is turning off that tap.
The numbers tell the tale. Between 2000 and 2014, clothing production doubled and people began buying 60 percent more clothes and wearing them for half as long as they once did. Three-fifths of all clothing is estimated to end up in landfills within a year of production — that can translate to a truckload of used clothing dumped or burned every second. Most of the facilities are in South Asia or Africa, where the nations receiving those loads cannot handle the amount. The scene in northern Chile has been called “the great fashion garbage patch”. Hills of used clothes, with labels from all over the world, stretch as far as the eye can see on the outskirts of Alto Hospicio, a city of 120, 000 residents.
New efforts, large and small, are under way to deal with clothing waste. In 2018, Franklin Zepeda founded a company that produces building-insulation panels (建筑隔热板) from the waste. “I was inspired by the idea that there was a great deal of waste that could perfectly be changed into raw materials to make new products, reducing the amount of clothes in our desert,” he says.
These are small but crucial (关键的) steps. The most promising solution — one that can solve the problem in a wider range — lies in the hands of the Chilean government.
12.What attracts the star-observing tourists to the Atacama?
A.The clear night sky. B.The rocky landscape.
C.The driest desert. D.Mars-like scenery.
13.What can be inferred about Franklin Zepeda's company?
A.It is expert in producing panels. B.It changes waste into raw materials.
C.It makes the desert into a tourist attraction. D.It makes full use of the waste in the desert.
14.What will probably be talked about next?
A.Promising future of Chile. B.Support from other governments.
C.Chilean government’s measures. D.Similar problems in other countries.
15.What can be the best title of the passage?
A.A Bucket-list Destination B.Fashion Waste in Atacama
C.NASA’s Attention on Atacama D.Efforts to Deal with Fast Fashion
【答案】12.A 13.D 14.C 15.B

根据第四段“New efforts, large and small, are under way to deal with clothing waste. (大大小小的新努力正在进行,以处理服装废物。2018年,富兰克林·塞佩达(Franklin Zepeda)成立了一家公司,利用垃圾生产建筑隔热板。他说:“我的灵感来自于这样一个想法:有大量的垃圾可以完全转化为制造新产品的原材料,从而减少我们沙漠中的衣服数量。”)”可知这家公司利用垃圾生产建筑隔热板,由此推断它充分利用了沙漠中的废物。故选D。
14.推理判断题。根据最后一段“These are small but crucial (关键的) steps. The most promising solution—one that can solve the problem in a wider range—lies in the hands of the Chilean government. (这些都是小而关键的步骤。最有希望的解决方案——一个可以在更大范围内解决问题的方案——掌握在智利政府手中。)”由此可推断下文会讨论智利政府的措施,故选C。
15.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其第二段“But the Atacama has also got attention as one of the world's fast-growing dumps (垃圾场) of used clothes, thanks to the rapid mass production of inexpensive clothing known as fast fashion. The phenomenon has created so much waste that the UN calls it “an environmental and social emergency”. The challenge is turning off that tap. 【2023-2024学年福建省福州市六校高一下学期期末联考】I didn’t quite know what I was looking for when I flew to Mongolia for a term abroad. I just needed something different, far from the late-night libraries of my college town. Most different, I hoped, would be my rural homestay: two weeks in central Mongolia with a family of nomadic(游牧的) herders.
I was studying Mongolian at the time, but still, there was so much I couldn’t say or understand. As we walked in the snow behind the goats, my host mom would ask me if I was cold, then giggle (咯咯地笑) and copy a big shiver to make sure I understood. In the evenings, she showed me how to make dumplings with her fingers. My host siblings would talk with me, speaking too fast for me to understand, as we explored the rocks around our tent; I’d listen and nod.
This verbal(言语的) barrier was strangely freeing. In the crowded dining hall at home, meeting new people made me anxious. I’d stay quiet, measuring out my words, struggling for something to say that wouldn’t expose me as unfunny or boring. In Mongolia, I couldn’t perfect my words. I could only smile, and try out one of the phrases I’d mastered: “May I help?” “Where is the dog?” “Are you tired?” My host family laughed at my pronunciation, at the way I threw up my hands and eyebrows in a frequent gesture of confusion. But in their laughter, I felt safe, unembarrassed.
With my Mongolian family on the grassland, I found a feeling of ease I’d never felt before. We were so different, they and I, and not just in language. Their skin was hardened and darkened by sun; I’d been hidden under hats and sunscreen since birth. My host siblings(兄弟姐妹) grew up drawing water from frozen streams and jogging behind herds of sheep; I spent summers at tennis camp.
For me, these gaps made all the difference. Without shared social measures, I wasted no time wondering how I was measuring up. Only real things—kindness, helpfulness—mattered.
4.Why did the author go to Mongolia for a term abroad?
A.She dreamed of living a nomadic life. B.She was tired of studying late at night.
C.She had to study Mongolians’ normal life. D.She was collecting information for libraries.
5.What does the underlined word “shiver” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Hug. B.Smile. C.Attack. D.Shake.
6.How did the author behave at the dining hall in her home country?
A.She felt at ease in the crowd. B.She usually weighed her words.
C.She asked a lot of funny questions. D.She often made others laugh with jokes.
7.What did the author learn from her life in Mongolia?
A.You are judged wherever you go. B.Nature makes humans feel insignificant.
C.Appearance reflects one’s standard of life. D.Being kind is the common social standard.

From Santa Barbara to Scotland, strangers are becoming friends by going on bike rides together. They get paired up by Cycling Without Age, an organization that helps seniors go for bike rides, even if they can’t pedal themselves.
Hugh Lyon and David Lawrence, who are roughly 20 years apart in age, have been riding together for years. The 56-year-old Lawrence serves as a “pilot”, driving the trishaw-a bike with a passenger seat in the front that Cycling Without Age uses for their rides. They go for rides about once a week, often discussing the history of their town.
“Despite my deceased parents, it gives me a connection with people from an older generation,” said Lawrence, “and I enjoy spending time with them and hearing their Stories.” The pair have formed a friendship outside of cycling. Lawrence said he calls Lyon often and goes to the gym with him to help him with exercises he can’t do on his own.
Ole Kassow, who founded Cycling Without Age, said that’s the power of the program. “The truly powerful thing about these bike rides is that they tie people and stories together to create new relationships,” he told CBS News. “In my experience, friendships-and the ability to form new relationships at any age-are what define a good life, and often also a long and happy life.”
John Boettner started the Santa Barbara chapter. He has one rule for passengers. “They say, ‘What does it cost if I’m going to go for a ride?’ I say, ‘Here’s what it costs: You have to wave. If you don’t wave, I’m going to kick you out,’” he joked. He said he likes when they hit red lights, because it gives them a chance to connect with people on the road. “Driving the trishaw is the best advertisement for Cycling Without Age”, Boettner said, “When you take a 101-year-old woman for a bike ride and she holds your hand tight and says thank you and gives you a kiss on the cheek, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
24.What benefit did Lawrence get from Cycling Without Age?
A.Picking up forgotten stories. B.Improving his health condition.
C.Understanding his parents’ love. D.Creating a relationship with seniors.
25.Why did Ole Kassow mention “friendships”?
A.To share the pleasure of cycling. B.To state the nature of happiness.
C.To show the value of the program. D.To introduce the definition of a good life.
26.What can we learn from Boettner’s words in the last paragraph?
A.The program needs to be advertised. B.Passengers have to pay for their rides.
C.Red lights connect people with the pilots. D.Bike riders feel content by offering rides.
27.What message does the passage convey?
A.A true friend is one soul in two bodies. B.Be a rainbow in somebody else’s cloud.
C.Don’t go through life, grow through life. D.Happiness is a journey, not a destination.

When it comes to sustainability (可持续性), Lauren Singer is the real deal. Known for her “Trash is For Tossers” blog and Package Free lifestyle shop, Singer is leading by example with a single mason jar (广口瓶) containing the only trash (垃圾) she’s collected in eight years (yes, you read that correctly). With recent money support from some companies, Singer is focused on becoming the largest producer of sustainable products in the world.
It all started when Singer was studying at New York University. As an Environmental Science student, she was getting mad at a classmate for making much plastic trash, but later she found every single thing in her own fridge was in one way or another packaged in plastic. It turned out she was as bad. So, she decided to move from plastics and thought the only way was to learn how to make her own products. Then, while she was doing research online, she came across a blog called the “Zero Waste Home” started by a Californian family who live a completely zero-waste life.
Her mind was completely blown. Originally, she thought she was doing the best for the planet by not using plastic. But the idea of producing no trash was so inspiring that she began her zero-waste journey and explored the possibility of living a waste-free life. She started by stopping buying packaged food and making her own products. Besides, instead of buying new clothing, she would buy things that were totally recycled, second-hand. She was also downsized — had only the things that she really needed.
In 2014, Lauren Singer founded her blog, “Trash is for Tossers”, to document her waste-free journey, as well as provide easy, actionable tips and tricks to living sustainably. She is becoming increasingly popular and has even been invited to lecture at the United Nations to promote her zero-waste lifestyle: “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” By taking simple action, everyone can contribute to the environment.

The Parkside Primary student beat the previous record by 19 seconds, making her the fastest distance runner under the age of 19 across 60 countries. It’s very important to recognise these achievements, but also to stay very much grounded and just enjoy the other pursuits that she likes. Groundwork Bridgeport hired a team of youth and trained them to provide ongoing care for trees in the community (社区). They serve the neighborhoods where they live, monitoring the trees, providing basic care, and connecting with their neighbors. Their “patrolling” is improving each tree’s longevity while giving them valuable experience and a good payment.
“We’re using data and technology to be able to find even down to the specific city block of where trees are needed the most,” said Amy Lester, Ventures Project Coordinator, Arbor Day Foundation. With a NatureQuant NatureScore® of 10, the east Bridgeport neighborhood was flagged as desperately needing trees. NatureQuant is a tech and research company that helps the Arbor Day Foundation determine where trees are needed most in urban spaces.
The most recent program that happened in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation was a tree giveaway. Fifty trees were given to residents of the neighborhood identified by NatureQuant.

I didn’t quite know what I was looking for when I flew to Mongolia for a term abroad.

Vietnam now has more than 40,000 historical relics. These relics of various forms and history are treasures for future generations. However, hundreds of relics are severely damaged due to the negative influence of time, war and human activities. Vietnamese cultural departments and activists have tried to preserve the historical and cultural relics in the country.
Head of Hanoi Relics Management Board, Nguyen DoanTuan, says rescue work must preserve the relics’ soul: “We cannot replace ruined construction with new materials. We must preserve its shape, size and style. We need to pay attention to every brick replaced so that it looks exactly like the original.”
