Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the US. But it soon spread to the other parts of the world. Now it is becoming increasingly difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to music.
To begin with, “muzak” (背景音乐) was intended simply to create a soothing (抚慰的) atmosphere. Recently, however, it's become a big business according to recent research. Dr. Ronald Milliman, an American marketing expert, has shown that music can boost sales or increase factory production by as much as a third.
But it has to be light music. A fast one has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts (收据;收条) by 38%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they like to buy. Yet, slow music isn't always answered. Dr. Milliman found, for example, that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer time to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurants owners might be well advised to play uptempo music to keep the customers moving — unless, of course, the resulting indigestion (消化不良) leads to complaints!
24. Background music means ____________.
A. light music that customers enjoy most
B. fast music that makes people move fast
C. slow music that can make customers enjoy their meals
D the music you are listening to while you are doing something else
25. At first, the background music was intended simply to ___________.
A. boost sales B. create a soothing atmosphere
C. increase factory production D. make customers eat their meals quickly
26. The slow music is not good for restaurant owners because ___________.
A. it results in indigestion B. it increases their sales
C. it keeps customers moving D. it decreases their sales
27. The underlined phrase “uptempo music” probably means ___________.
A. slow music B. fast music
C. light music D. classical music

Every organization has tons of important data to protect. Important business data, customers’ personal information, and confidential documents that should not be shown to outsiders are a few examples. The safety of data is only made possible by using network safety tools and skills.
The importance of network safety in the modern business has increased since a large part of the workforce started working remotely (远程). Today, office information systems are spread in one huge network across many areas. A centralized system to protect network devices from being attacked doesn’t exist as it did before. This design leaves more vulnerable (脆弱) points that hackers (黑客) can take advantage of.
A cybercriminal (网络犯罪) can find these vulnerable points and cause damage to the system inside. An incident like this will lead to the loss of funds, confidential information, and customer data, and it will also destroy the name of the business.
In March 2020, Marriott International suffered a major data attack in which the information of 5. 2 million guests was accessed (获取) using the login information of two employees. Twitter wasn’t spared from attacks. Strong network safety techniques are modern-day necessities for the survival of businesses, but more than that, network safety awareness has also become the need of the hour.
For today’s businesses network safety is not limited to IT professionals and companies connected with it. Network safety is for everyone — lawyers, designers, musicians, bankers, and others will all find a network safety system beneficial for their work and business. By fixing network safety system and training employees on it, a small business will make its employees more responsible, a law office will better protect its data, and a designer will find more effective ways to control their important documents.
28. According to the first paragraph, how is data safety ensured?
A. By avoiding storing data online. B. Through frequent employee training.
C. By deleting useless data regularly. D. Through network safety tools and skills.
29. What may hackers use to destroy the network security?
A. Confidential documents. B. Centralized security systems.
C. Advanced network safety tools. D. Vulnerable points in the network system.
30. What does the underlined part mean?
A. The survival of businesses is the most important.
B. Employees should not be offered the login passwords.
C. It is necessary to raise awareness of network security.
D. The network technology can solve any network risks.
31. What does the last paragraph intend to tell us?
A. Law protects everyone’s rights and interests effectively.
B. It is everyone’s responsibility to maintain network security.
C. Every employee needs training before starting to work.
D. The bigger the company is, the greater the risk will be.

Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to conquer (征服) Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two “Irelands”. Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country.
In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage (短缺) of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.
For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace.
The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were “the greatest talkers since the Greeks”. Since independence, Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc.
32. What does the author tell us in Paragraph 1?
A. How the Irish fought against the English.
B. How Ireland gained independence.
C. How English rulers tried to conquer Ireland.
D. How two “Irelands” came into being.
33. We learn from the text that in Ireland ________.
A. food shortages and a lack of work in the 1840s led to a decline in population
B. people are moving to the cities for lack of work in the countryside
C. it is harder to make a living as a farmer than as a factory worker
D. different kinds of old Irish songs are all sung with instruments
34. The last paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. the Irish character B. the Irish culture
C. Irish musical instruments D. a famous Irish writer
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Life in Ireland B. A Very Difficult History
C. Ireland, Past and Present D. The Independence of Ireland

One morning, Tom Peterson decided to go on a hike in the mountains near his home. He told his family he’d be back by nightfall, so when he didn’t return as expected, they became concerned. At around 8 p. m. , they tried to reach him on his cell phone but received no response. Tom’s brother, Jack, decided to head to the trail (小径) and look for him.
Jack grabbed a flashlight and headed to the trail to search for Tom. The night was strangely quiet broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves. When Jack arrived at the trailhead, he spotted Tom’s backpack lying on the side of the path. His heart sank. Jack called out his brother’s name, his voice echoing through the empty wilderness, but there was no response. After searching for a long time, Jack still couldn’t find Tom. He went back home frustratedly.
Back at home, Tom’s parents were on edge (紧张不安). His mother paced the living room, imagining Tom lost, alone, and injured. She felt helpless, wishing she could do more to protect her son. His father, on the other hand, struggled to remain calm, reassuring his wife while silently fearing the worst.
As midnight approached, the family called for professional help. The search team arrived swiftly, equipped with flashlights and heat-sensitive cameras. They searched the trail, their lights cutting through the darkness. Tom, down the hill with an injured ankle, lay in the dark, battling waves of doubt. The cold ground beneath him seemed to sap (使削弱) what little warmth he had left. He shivered, pulling his jacket tighter around himself.
The night felt endless. Tom’s mind wavered between hope and despair. He thought about his family — his mother’s warm hugs, his father’s steady presence, and Jack’s infectious laughter. The thought of them kept him going. To keep his spirits up, he flicked his flashlight on and off, sending faint (微弱的) pulses of light into the darkness. It was a small gesture, but it was all he could do to hold onto hope.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, Tom heard a faint noise in the distance.
