Construction on the Long Room, the library’s 65-meter-long main hall, began in 1712 and lasted 20 years. The original structure only had books on the lower level, but when the library’s shelves were filled in the 1850s, the ceiling was raised to accommodate even more books. Today the Long Room holds 200,000 of the library’s oldest books. Stuttgart City Library Opened in 2011, the German library is a splendid light-gray cube consisting of glass blocks designed by Eun Young Yi. Inside it, you’ll find an airy central room, above which sits a multi-story stepped reading room lined with bookshelves. The library towers over the nearby buildings. Library of Parliament Taking the form of a Victorian Gothic chapter house complete with 16 flying buttresses, the 1876 Library of Parliament is one of Canada’s prized architectural treasures — it’s on the ten-dollar bill. Architects Thomas Fuller and Chilion Jones took inspiration from the British Museum Reading Room for the structure, lining the central hall with delicate wood shelves and wood carvings. Rampur Raza Library Founded in the late 18th century, the Indian library is home to a massive collection of Islamic and Asian texts and objects. The pink structure that houses the collection today was built in 1904 by Nawab Hamid Ali Khan as a mansion of Indo-European style, The Rampur Raza Library was later shifted to this grand building in 1957. 1. However, only those putting plans into action can stay ahead. Alexandr Wang is one such example. Los Alamos National Laboratory was where Alexandr spent his childhood. Both his parents were physicists there. Alexandr, from a young age, had a sharp mind. As a kid, he was regarded as a math wizard (奇才) and competed in national math and computer competitions. Finishing high school, Alexandr entered MIT where machine learning and AI amazed him. He saw the potential (潜力) of AI, and was excited about how it could change the world. But it wasn’t making a real impact. His ambition to set up a company in that field was seeded then. At 17, he got the role of tech lead at Quora where he met Lucy Guo , with whom Alexandr founded Scale AI, which turned out to be a considerable success. In fact, at that time, there were various opportunities in the tech world. It was hard to decide which road they should go down. Then he and his team decided to take a different approach — instead of following diverse paths, they agreed to focus on one. They went with “imagery, computer vision and other kinds of sensor data”. And that is what made the company’s profits rise quickly. Scale AI has a net worth of about $7.3 billion at present, with Alexandr being the world’s youngest self-made billionaire. When asked lessons he’d like to share with founders, Alexandr stated there are a number of things. “The top one is always doing things that go with your values and how you want to build a company at the beginning. When you talk to investors (投资者), they’ll contribute advice that may go against your goal. Figure out your focus and what gets you started.” 4. What inspired Alexandr to build Scale AI? A. The work at Quora. B. His experiences at university. C. The influence of his parents. D. His talent for math and computer. 5. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3? A. The key to the success of Scale AI. B. Challenges of Alexandr’s career. C. Alexandr’s great achievements. D. The process of founding Scale AI. 6. Which of the following can best describe Alexandr? A. Clever and generous. B. Courageous and outgoing. C. Ambitious and sociable. D. Adventurous and determined. 7. What did Alexandr advise founders to do? A. Stick to one particular direction. B. Keep an open mind on suggestions. C. Remain true to the original intention. D. Find a friend to start a company. B 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第二段“Finishing high school, Alexandr entered MIT where machine learning and AI amazed him. He saw the potential (潜力) of AI, and was excited about how it could change the world. But it wasn’t making a real impact. His ambition to set up a company in that field was seeded then.(高中毕业后,亚历山大进入麻省理工学院学习机器学习和人工智能。他看到了人工智能的潜力,并对它如何改变世界感到兴奋。但这并没有产生真正的影响。他想在那个领域开一家公司的野心从那时就开始萌芽了)”可知,在大学的经历激发了Alexandr创建Scale AI。故选B。 【5题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“In fact, at that time, there were various opportunities in the tech world. It was hard to decide which road they should go down. Then he and his team decided to take a different approach — instead of following diverse paths, they agreed to focus on one. They went with “imagery, computer vision and other kinds of sensor data”. And that is what made the company’s profits rise quickly. Scale AI has a net worth of about $7.3 billion at present, with Alexandr being the world’s youngest self-made billionaire.(事实上,在那个时候,科技领域有各种各样的机会。很难决定他们该走哪条路。然后,他和他的团队决定采取不同的方法——他们同意专注于一条,而不是遵循不同的路径。他们使用了“图像、计算机视觉和其他类型的传感器数据”。这就是公司利润快速增长的原因。Scale AI目前的净资产约为73亿美元,亚历山大是世界上最年轻的白手起家的亿万富翁)”可知,第三段主要介绍了Scale AI成功的关键。故选A。 根据第二段“His ambition to set up a company in that field was seeded then.(他想在那个领域开一家公司的抱负从那时就开始萌芽了)”以及第三段“At 17, he got the role of tech lead at Quora where he met Lucy Guo , with whom Alexandr founded Scale AI, which turned out to be a considerable success. (17岁时,他在Quora担任技术主管,在那里他遇到了Lucy Guo),与她一起创立了Scale AI,并取得了相当大的成功。)”可推断,Alexandr创立一家人工智能公司的决心非常坚定;根据第三段中的“Then he and his team decided to take a different approach — instead of following diverse paths, they agreed to focus on one.(然后,他和他的团队决定采取不同的方法——他们同意专注于一条,而不是遵循不同的路径)”可知,Alexandr敢于冒险、勇于尝试。 根据最后一段“The top one is always doing things that go with your values and how you want to build a company at the beginning. When you talk to investors (投资者), they’ll contribute advice that may go against your goal. Figure out your focus and what gets you started.(最重要的是,一开始总是按照你的价值观和你想要的方式去做事情。当你与投资者交谈时,他们提供的建议可能与你的目标背道而驰。弄清楚你的重点和你的出发点)”可推知,亚历山大建议创业者忠于最初的意图。故选C。 C These days, the skies don’t seem so inviting: Airfares are climbing. Passengers are fighting. Computer systems, and entire airlines, are melting down. Any of those might be reason enough for some to stay off a plane. But for a small, yet growing, number of travelers, the problem with air travel goes way further. They are giving up flying because of its effect on the climate. “I choose to stay grounded because it aligns (一致) with what is true,” said Dan Castrigano, 36, a former teacher who in 2020 signed a promise not to travel by air. “The climate is breaking down.” One Boeing 747 carrying 416 passengers from Heathrow Airport in London to Edinburgh produces the same carbon dioxide as 336 cars traveling the same distance, according to BBC Science Focus, a peer-reviewed magazine. That huge carbon footprint is leading many activists and scientists to issue cries to fly less, or not at all. There is perhaps no country with more anti-flight activists than Sweden, where by 2020, 15, 000 people had signed a nationwide promise to travel without flying for at least one year. The nonprofit behind that movement, We Stay on the Ground, is now raising funds and hopes to get 100, 000 signatories in the next few years. Swedes have coined a word, flygskam, to describe the shame associated with flying. We Stay on the Ground inspired the Flight Free movements in Britain and Australia, as well as Flight Free USA. There are other grass-roots movements, too: Stay Grounded, a global network of over 150 organizations promoting other means to travel, was founded in 2016 and has its headquarters in Austria; Byway, a British travel planning company founded during the Covid-19 lockdown, allows customers to plan flight-free routes across Europe. Airlines are taking efforts to make flying greener, with promises to achieve “net zero” carbon emissions (排放) in the next three decades. Activists say that progress isn’t coming fast enough and are pushing for frequent fliers to at least consider small changes, which they say could add up to big differences. 8. Who is the target audience of the passage? A. Airline workers. B. Government employees. C. Frequent fliers. D. Tour guides. 9. Why does the writer mention Dan Castrigano in paragraph 2? A. To give an example. B. To share a story. C. To present an issue. D. To express an opinion. 10. What can be implied from the passage? A. Flight shame goes global. B. Swedes are proud to travel by plane. C. People are trading wheels for wings. D. British are leading in action to fly less. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards the idea of giving up flying? A. Dissatisfied. B. Supportive. C. Worried. D. Confident. C 9. A 10. A 11. 根据第一段“These days, the skies don’t seem so inviting: Airfares are climbing. Passengers are fighting. Computer systems, and entire airlines, are melting down. Any of those might be reason enough for some to stay off a plane. (如今,天空似乎不那么诱人了:机票价格在上涨。乘客们在打架。计算机系统和整个航空公司都在崩溃。其中任何一个都可能是一些人远离飞机的足够理由。)”结合文章主要说明了如今人们开始不再选择航空出现的现象,指出航空旅行对气候的影响。可知,这篇文章的目标读者是经常飞行的人。故选C。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段““I choose to stay grounded because it aligns (一致) with what is true,” said Dan Castrigano, 36, a former teacher who in 2020 signed a promise not to travel by air. “The climate is breaking down.”(“我选择脚踏实地,因为这符合事实,”36岁的丹·卡斯特里加诺说。他曾是一名教师,在2020年签署了一份不乘飞机旅行的承诺。“气候正在崩溃。”)”可知,作者在第二段提到了丹·卡斯特里加诺是为了举例子。故选A。 根据倒数第二段“Swedes have coined a word, flygskam, to describe the shame associated with flying. 故选A。 根据第一段“But for a small, yet growing, number of travelers, the problem with air travel goes way further. They are giving up flying because of its effect on the climate. (但对于为数不多但仍在不断增长的旅行者来说,航空旅行的问题要严重得多。由于飞行对气候的影响,他们正在放弃飞行。)”以及文章主要分析了飞机对气候带来的负面影响,可推知,作者对放弃飞行的想法持支持态度。故选B。 D Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people. According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere. There are two major theories as to why nature is so good for our brains. The first one is called attention restoration theory. When we spend time in busy urban environments, all the hard edges, traffic, lights and people everywhere really make us have to constantly focus our attention on these things. Whereas when you spend time in nature, it helps restore your powers of attention and reduce that tiredness and bad-temper. The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. So basically, when we spend time in nature after stressful events, it helps us feel better and recover faster. When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often. This is worth the effort to do. You need to get out of doors and just be surrounded by the greenery and by nature. You’ll feel calmer. You’ll feel less depressed and less anxious. It’s just a great way to deal with the stress of modern life. 12. Which word can replace the underlined word “prescribe”? A. Practice. B. Provide. C. Suggest. D. Explore. 13. What is the function of paragraph 2? A. To clarify a concept. B. To lead in the topic. C. To make a conclusion. D. To provide evidence. 14. How does nature help people according to the two major theories? A. Refresh oneself. B. Live a better life. C. Improve urban environments. D. Deal with stressful issues. 15. What can be inferred according to paragraph 4? A. It is not easy to get in nature. B. Nature treatment is still unpopular. C. Most patients prefer nature treatment. D. Doctors usually recommend nature to patients. C 13. D 14. A 15. 根据文章第二段“According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. (根据国际应用心理学协会的说法,更低的压力,更好的情绪,更好的大脑活动,甚至快乐都可以与花时间在户外有关。)”以及划线单词所在句子的主谓部分“That’s why(这是……的原因)”可知,前一句中所说的减轻压力与在户外有关系,与后一句有因果关系,因为自然疗法对身体有好处,因此很多项目才会建议把自然作为潜在的治疗方法。A.practice练习;B.provide提供;C.suggest建议;D.explore探讨。 根据文章第一段“Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people. (科学家估计地球上有数百万棵树。我不敢相信这些树能对人有治疗作用。)”引出话题。第二段“According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere. 根据文章第三段“The first one is called attention restoration theory. (第一个是注意力恢复理论。)”以及“The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. (第二个主要理论叫做压力减少理论。)”可知,大自然疗法主要采取的方式是减少压力,是人体基本认知恢复。A项“Refresh oneself.(清醒头脑)”符合题意,故选A项。 根据文章第四段“When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often. Choosing presents for your friends or loved ones is a hard nut to crack. ____16____ Don’t try to price-match. The first thing you should do when planning your gift list is to create a budget (预算) of how much you’re willing to spend — and stick to it, even if you receive a more expensive gift from someone else. “A void matching spending, because that’s when gift-giving is driven more by pressure than by thoughtfulness,” says Sharon Schweitzer, an international etiquette (礼节) expert and founder of Protocol Etiquette Worldwide. After all, loved ones dropping a lot of money on expensive gifts could probably afford expensive items on their own and aren’t looking for you to return the favor. ____17____ Don’t give just because you did in the past. When you’re figuring out whom to give to keep in mind your list might not have all the same people as last year’s. “You have to review it every year because you have relationships with different people, so you have to look at how those relationships have grown and developed,” says Schweitzer. ____18____ Even if you’ve exchanged gifts in the past, don’t feel you should give presents to friends who you haven’t kept in touch with much this year. Send a holiday card instead to show you’re thinking of them. Be honest if you don’t have a gift. If someone surprises you with a present you weren’t expecting, be honest that you don’t have one to give in return. ____19____ “Say you’re touched and delighted and a little embarrassed you don’t have anything for them.” says Schweitzer. Don’t try to think up a gift on the spot by taking something out of your closet suddenly, because the other person will likely know exactly what you’re doing. ____20____ With the exception of family members or best friends, never ask people what they want for a present. “That makes people very uncomfortable, and they feel they ought to get you something in return,” says Schweitzer. Gift requests leave little creativity to the giver, so come up with your own ideas for a more thoughtful present. A. Never ask for a wish list. B. People come in and out of your life. C. Have creative ideas when you choose gifts. D. The best way to deal with that is to be honest and sincere. E. Here are pieces of gift-giving etiquette you need this holiday season. F. Expensive gifts are sometimes thoughtful items your friends selected. G. Find a thoughtful gift instead, like a frame with an old favorite photo. E 17. G 18. B 19. D 20. Here are pieces of gift-giving etiquette you need this holiday season.(以下是你在这个节日里需要的送礼礼仪)切题。 Find a thoughtful gift instead, like a frame with an old favorite photo.(找一份贴心的礼物,比如一个相框,里面有一张你最喜欢的老照片)切题。 People come in and out of your life.(人们在你的生活中进进出出)切题。 The best way to deal with that is to be honest and sincere.(解决这个问题的最好方法是诚实和真诚)切题。 Never ask for a wish list.(永远不要索要愿望清单)切题。故选A。 This morning I was reading a book outside my favorite beachside coffee shop when an 18-year-old boy sat down next to me and said, ‘The ___21___ in your hands is great, isn’t it?’ I closed the book and we started ___22___. He’s growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how sound he sleeps when I go to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone. ” “Well, you can’t, Adam.” His mother’s voice was quick and light. “Besides, he isn’t a child any more. It’s time he took his turn. ” “Yes, ” his father said slowly, “But I sure do hate to wake him. ” A few days before Christmas that year when he was fifteen, Rob heard these words and something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of that before, for neither his father nor his mother talked about loving their children -- they had no time for such things. There was always so much to do on the farm. They were poor, and most of the excitement for Christmas was in the turkey and the pies his mother made. His sisters sewed presents and his mother and father always bought him something he needed, not only a warm jacket, maybe, but something more, such as a book. And he saved and bought them each something, too. He had gone to the ten-cent store and bought a tie as usual. It had seemed nice enough until he lay thinking the night before Christmas. He wished that he had a better present for his father. A thought struck him like a silver lightning. Why should he not give his father a special gift in the barn(牛棚)? He could get up early, earlier than four o’clock and he could move quietly and slowly into the barn and get all the milking done. He’d do it alone, milk and clean up, and then when his father went in to start the milking, he’d see it all done. He laughed to himself as he gazed at the stars, it was what he would do, and he mustn’t sleep too sound. At a quarter to three, he got up and put on his clothes. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Back in his room, he had only a minute to pull off his clothes in the darkness and jumped into bed, for he heard his father up. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 At a quarter to three, he got up and put on his clothes. He crept downstairs carefully to avoid making a noise. With the help of the faint moonlight, he crossed the yard and entered the barn. The cows looked at him, sleepy and surprised. It was early for them, too. He had never milked all alone before, but the task went more easily than he had ever known it to go before. Milking for once was not a chore. It was something else, a gift to his father who loved him. After what seemed like one hour, the two milk cans were eventually full, and he covered them and closed the milkhouse door gently. Back in his room, he had only a minute to pull off his clothes in the darkness and jumped into bed, for he heard his father up. His door was knocked and obviously his father came to wake him as usual. “Aw-right, ” he said sleepily. The sound of his father’s footsteps died away and he lay still, laughing to himself. Then ten minutes later, the door opened and in came his father, sitting by the bed, his father reached out for his shoulder with a smile on his weather-worn face. “Rob, thank you. Nobody ever did a nicer thing. ” He got up from the bed and hugged his father tightly. "It’s for Christmas, Dad!” They both were in love and happiness. 词汇激活 行为类 ①潜行,缓慢移动:creep/crawl/sneak ②看着,盯着:look at/stare at ③减弱:die away/fade away 情绪类 ①惊讶:be surprised/be amazed ②开心:happiness/joy/delight 【点睛】[高分句型1] It was something else, a gift to his father who loved him.(运用了who引导的定语从句) [高分句型2] After what seemed like one hour, the two milk cans were eventually full. C These days, the skies don’t seem so inviting: Airfares are climbing. B. Supportive. C. Worried. D. Confident. D Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. A. Practice. B. Provide. C. Suggest. D. Explore. 13. G. 注意∶ 1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150左右; 2. 续写部分分为两段, 每段的开头语已为你写好。 At a quarter to three, he got up and put on his clothes. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
