The stories we engage with can shape our world. However, the publishing industry has long been criticized for its lack of diversity. Despite recent improvements, many people, like Colin Kaepernick, grew up with little or no literature. Kaepernick, a former National Football League (NFL) player, rarely read as a child because he couldn’t relate to the narratives in the books available.
Over the years, self-realization and awareness, combined with his activism, inspired Kaepernick to address the lack of diversity. In 2023, he released a graphic novel entitled Change the Game. He explained in an interview that the objective of this project was to provide younger audiences with characters and stories that they could relate to, and also give them the resources, which he lacked growing up, to navigate their realities.
And subsequently in 2024, Colin launched Lumi, an AI-based platform that provides creators with tools to independently produce, publish, distribute, and market their stories, both digitally and physically. “Lumi addresses an unnecessary dependency on gatekeepers that slows creators down,” says Kaepernick.
The platform was born out of the barriers he encountered while trying to publish his own works through Ra Vision Media. “One specific challenge creators face is the manufacturing and distribution of their stories,” he explains. “We have built digital and physical publishing directly into our platform to simplify the process of manufacturing and distribution for creators and remove this organizational burden.”
Lumi’s use of AI has brought discussions about technology’s role in the creative process. While some fear that AI tools might overshadow human creativity, Kaepernick sees AI as an enabler rather than a replacement for human creativity. “We believe creators are at the center of all creations, and AI will be a tool that creators can use to enhance their current creative processes,” he explains.
Looking ahead, Lumi aims to be a bridge between traditional creatives and AI-driven content creation, developing an environment where both can boom. Through Lumi, Kaepernick is expanding the creative space to include a wider range of voices. “Lumi will allow a new wave of diverse and innovative stories to come to life,” Kaepernick says.
4. Why did Colin Kaepernick publish Change the Game?
A. To criticize the quality of storytelling.
B. To meet young readers’ need in storytelling.
C. To support his physical education initiatives.
D. To challenge traditional publishing companies.
5. What inspired Colin Kaepernick to launch the platform of Lumi?
A. His desire to become a writer. B. His enthusiasm for AI technology.
C. His struggle with literary creation. D. His personal publishing experience.
6. What do we know about Lumi?
A. It focuses primarily on digital storytelling.
B. It is intended to minimize reading difficulties.
C. It leads to the decline of traditional publishing.
D. It enables creators to work freely and independently.
7. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A. How Kaepernick Makes Efforts to Diversify Storytelling
B. How Kaepernick Takes Advantage of AI to Write Books
C. Why Kaepernick Appreciates Authentic Storytelling Style
D. Why Kaepernick Shifts His Career from Sports to Literature

Watching thousands of baby puffins (海鹦), known as p pufflings, being thrown off a cliff (悬崖) is perfectly normal for the people of Iceland’s Westman Islands. This yearly tradition is what’s known as “puffling season” and it is a crucial practice. Puffins are charming birds and attract locals and tourists to visit them. But during puffling season, the focus shifts from merely watching to actively helping the young puffins.
The chicks of puffins hatch in nests on high sea cliffs. About six weeks after hatching, they will fly from their nests and spend several years at sea until they return to land to breed. Puffins have historically found the ocean by following the light of the moon.
But because of lights from towns near where the puffins nest, they can get lost. Instead of heading out to sea to fish and grow strong, the birds end up heading inland. They wander on the streets, where cars, cats, and buildings pose dangerous obstacles. So, many residents spend a few weeks in August and September collecting baby puffins that have crashed into town and then gently throwing them into the ocean.
According to Erpur Hansen, a local ecologist, the average puffin population in Iceland has decreased by 70 percent over the last 30 years. “While light pollution may be the most visible and easily blamed issue, what’s restricting puffin numbers most dramatically are rising sea surface temperatures,” he explains. To further worsen the issue, puffins also only lay one egg per year, and only after they’re 3-6 years old. That rareness, combined with lack of food, and the legal hunting of the birds in Iceland all come together to threaten the population.
In fact, Hansen has suggested that if all factors continue on a similar trend, puffins in Iceland could be a thing of the past in a matter of decades. “On the upside, the last few years have seen something of a population increase, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to relax and it’s important to remain watchful to protect the birds, especially during puffling season,” Hansen says.
8. What do people from Westman Islands usually do in puffling season?
A Watch pufflings thrown off a cliff by adult puffins.
B. Observe pufflings flying from their nests to breed.
C. Search for pufflings and release them into the wild.
D. Celebrate the pufflings’ successful migration journey.
9. Why do many puffins lose their ways?
A. The moonlight is hazier than it used to be.
B. They are misled by artificial lights inland.
C. They are born with poor sense of direction.
D. Natural environment is too complicated to adapt.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly focus on about the puffin?
A. The multiple factors causing its decline. B. The impact of climate change on it.
C. The rareness of its breeding features. D. The numerous challenges its habitat faces.
11. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. There’s no need for long-term fix for the pufflings.
B. Puffins’ future is overwhelmingly discouraging.
C. Constant active intervention from humans is essential.
D. The puffling season tradition should be spread across Iceland.
D
The chemically combined Bisphenol A, or BPA, was found in a variety of widely used products, such as plastic of water bottles and eyewear. But it is also a chemical known to disturb the body’s hormones (激素).
Previous studies have already suggested that BPA exposure could negatively affect human health, including the gut microbiome However, studies have not looked at the connections between those who are overweight and those who are not. Researchers in Spain recently studied a group of children, half boys and half girls, aiming to evaluate how BPA affects gut microbiome in relation to childhood overweight and whether certain bacteria could serve as biological markers for BPA exposure.
BPA-cultured samples from 106 children aged 5 to 10 were analyzed, revealing that BPA exposure led to specific changes of gut microbiome. Certain bacterial species, such as Clostridium and Romboutsia, showed resistance to BPA and were positively associated with microbiome richness. However, other species were inversely correlated with gut diversity, potentially leading to overweight. “We found that the gut microbiome responds differently to BPA exposure depending on the body-mass index (BMI) of the individual,” said microbiologist Margarita Aguilera, lead author of the study.
In addition, children with normal weight exhibited a more enriched and connected gut microbiome network compared to those with overweight, suggesting greater resilience (恢复力) to the ill effects of BPA. This finding highlights the importance of understanding the relationship between BPA, overweight, and gut microbiome for informing interventions and policies aimed at reducing childhood overweight risk.
In future work, Aguilera said, the researchers plan to similarly investigate how exposure to other combined chemicals may influence the composition of the gut microbiome. Her group’s primary goal, however, is to explain the mechanisms behind an invisible but widespread threat. “We want to raise awareness about the health risks associated with micro-plastics that enter our bodies, and those that spread in the environment,” Aguilera said in a statement. “It’s crucial for individuals to be mindful of these concerns.”
12. Why did the Spanish researchers conduct this study?
A. To identify more hormones related to children’s overweight.
B. To confirm certain bacteria as indicators of causing overweight.
C. To discover the potential risks of BPA exposure as many as possible.
D. To explore BPA’s impact on gut microbiome concerning childhood overweight.
13. What does the underlined word “inversely” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Randomly. B. Respectively. C. Oppositely. D. Apparently.
14. What can we learn from the study?
A. The increase of gut bacteria will add the risk of overweight.
B. The finding emphasizes the link between the body’s hormones.
C. The overweight kids have a more diverse network of gut bacteria.
D. Normal-weight kids can effectively resist bad effects of BPA.
15. Which aspect of the research does Aguilera talk about in the last paragraph?
A. Its application. B. Its significance. C. Its limitation. D. Its background.

If you find that it’s challenging to decrease your cellphone use, you should know that it’s not because you have poor willpower. “It’s hard to change your habits around your phone use because our phones are thoughtfully designed to attract our attention and make it difficult to turn away,” Catherine Price, author of How to Break Up With Your Phone, explains. ____16____
Think about your “why”. Price recommends that you figure out a positive goal to focus on. “In other words, ask yourself what you want to be spending your time and attention on,” Price said. You can also regard this as your “why”. Next, identify how your phone is interfering with your priorities. ____17____ So, if your priority is reading new books but you find yourself browsing social media instead, get your phone out of your bedroom.

____19____ The sound of incoming texts and emails is hard to ignore. “If you have your phone on loud and you have notifications going, the minute you see that screen light up or you hear that little ding, you immediately stop to check it,” Price says. It can be helpful to set your phone to silent mode to avoid this.
Move your phone away from your body. When something is constantly within your sight, it’s only natural to want to reach for it. Remember to get your phone away from your body and out of your view to fight this. ____20____

I was standing in the backyard, staring at the old tree that had stood there for as long as I could remember. It was a towering oak (橡树), its branches stretching out like arms welcoming the world. My grandfather had planted it when he was just a young man, and now it was a symbol of strength and stability in our family.
As a child I would often climb to the top of the tree, feeling a sense of adventure and freedom. I would sit on one of the higher branches, my legs swinging over the edge, and watch the world below me. From up there, everything seemed small and manageable. The worries and stresses of everyday life faded away, replaced by a sense of peace.
My grandfather was always there to encourage me, teaching me the importance of nature and the lessons it could teach us. He would tell me stories about how the tree had weathered storms and strong winds, yet always stood tall and proud. “Just like this tree,” he would say, “you need to be strong and resilient (适应力强的) in the face of adversity.”
As the years went by, I grew older and my interests changed. I spent less time in the backyard and more time on my studies and social life. The old tree was still there, but I rarely noticed it anymore. It became just another part of the background, something I took for granted.
One summer, a severe storm swept through our town. The wind blew hard and the rain poured down heavily. When the storm finally passed, I went outside to survey the damage. To my horror, the old oak tree had been struck by lightning and was split in two parts. It lay on the ground, a fallen giant, its once strong branches now broken and scattered.
I stood there, tears streaming down my face, feeling a deep sense of loss. The tree that had been a part of my life for so long was gone. It was as if a piece of my childhood had been torn away.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
My grandfather came and put his arm around me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now, whenever I’m free, I’ll sit on that bench made of the oak.

A. Watch pufflings thrown off a cliff by adult puffins.
A There’s no need for long-term fix for the pufflings.
B. Puffins’ future is overwhelmingly discouraging.
C. Constant active intervention from humans is essential.
D. The puffling season tradition should be spread across Iceland.
C 9. B 10. A 11. C

根据第一段中“Watching thousands of baby puffins (海鹦), known as p pufflings, being thrown off a cliff (悬崖) is perfectly normal for the people of Iceland’s Westman Islands. This yearly tradition is what’s known as ‘puffling season’ and it is a crucial practice.(对于冰岛韦斯特曼群岛的人们来说,观看成千上万的海鹦宝宝被扔下悬崖是再正常不过的事。这个一年一度的传统被称为“海鹦幼鸟季”,这是一个至关重要的做法)”和第三段中“So, many residents spend a few weeks in August and September collecting baby puffins that have crashed into town and then gently throwing them into the ocean. (所以,许多居民会在8月和9月花几周时间收集冲进城镇的小海鹦,然后轻轻地把它们扔进海里)”可知,韦斯特曼群岛的人们在海鹦幼鸟季通常会寻找海鹦幼鸟并将它们放归野外。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“But because of lights from towns near where the puffins nest, they can get lost. Instead of heading out to sea to fish and grow strong, the birds end up heading inland. (但由于海鹦筑巢地附近城镇的灯光,它们会迷路。这些鸟没有出海捕鱼并茁壮成长,而是最终飞向了内陆)”可知,许多海鹦迷路是因为它们被内陆的人造灯光误导了。故选B项。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“‘While light pollution may be the most visible and easily blamed issue, what’s restricting puffin numbers most dramatically are rising sea surface temperatures,’ he explains. To further worsen the issue, puffins also only lay one egg per year, and only after they’re 3-6 years old. That rareness, combined with lack of food, and the legal hunting of the birds in Iceland all come together to threaten the population. (他解释说:“虽然光污染可能是最明显、最容易被指责的问题,但对海鹦数量限制最严重的是不断上升的海面温度。”更糟糕的是,海鹦每年只产一枚蛋,而且要到3-6岁才开始产蛋。这种繁殖的稀少性,再加上食物短缺以及冰岛对海鹦的合法捕猎,共同威胁着海鹦的数量)”可知,该段主要聚焦于导致海鹦数量减少的多种因素。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“‘On the upside, the last few years have seen something of a population increase, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to relax and it’s important to remain watchful to protect the birds, especially during puffling season,’ Hansen says. (汉森说:“从好的方面看,过去几年海鹦数量有所增加,但这并不意味着可以放松了,保持警惕保护这些鸟类很重要,尤其是在海鹦幼鸟季”)”可知,因为人类的保护,过去几年海鹦数量有所增加,所以作者在最后一段中想传达的是“人类持续的积极干预是必不可少的”。故选C项。
D 13. C 14. D 15. B

根据第四段中“In addition, children with normal weight exhibited a more enriched and connected gut microbiome network compared to those with overweight, suggesting greater resilience (恢复力) to the ill effects of BPA.(此外,与超重儿童相比,正常体重的儿童表现出更丰富、联系更紧密的肠道微生物群网络,这表明他们对双酚A的不良影响有更强的恢复力)”可知,正常体重的孩子能有效抵抗双酚A的不良影响。
根据最后一段中“Her group’s primary goal, however, is to explain the mechanisms behind an invisible but widespread threat. ‘We want to raise awareness about the health risks associated with micro plastics that enter our bodies, and those that spread in the environment,’ Aguilera said in a statement. ‘It’s crucial for individuals to be mindful of these concerns.’(然而,她的团队的主要目标是解释这一无形但广泛存在的威胁背后的机制。

故填which。
故填has developed。
bring...to life是固定短语,表示“使……复活,使……焕发生机”。故填to。

I was standing in the backyard, staring at the old tree that had stood there for as long as I could remember. It was a towering oak (橡树), its branches stretching out like arms welcoming the world. My grandfather had planted it when he was just a young man, and now it was a symbol of strength and stability in our family.
As a child, I would often climb to the top of the tree, feeling a sense of adventure and freedom.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
My grandfather came and put his arm around me
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now, whenever I’m free, I’ll sit on that bench made of the oak.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My grandfather came and put his arm around me. I looked up at him, trying to hold back my tears. “It’s okay,” he said softly, “The tree gave us many years of joy and memories. We’ll save some of the wood and make something special out of it.” Over the next few days, we worked together and created a beautiful wooden bench. We placed it in the backyard, under the spot where the old tree had once stood. It was a sign of respect to the tree that had given us so much over the years.
Now, whenever I’m free, I’ll sit on that bench made of the oak. It reminds me of my grandfather’s wisdom and the lessons that the tree had taught me. I feel a sense of connection to the past and a renewed appreciation for the simple things in life. The bench is a symbol of resilience and strength, a reminder that even in the darkest times. I begin to realize that whatever happens, there is always hope for renewal and restoration.
