Outside the house there were a lot of people who were smoking, laughing and talking. Holmes and I walked up and down in front of the house. “You see,” said Holmes to me, “I don’t think she wants her new husband to see the photo. But where is it? At her bank? No. Such a woman likes to keep important things herself. I’m sure it’s in her house.” “But the King’s men tried to find it,” I said. “Yes, but they didn’t know where to look for it!” said Holmes. “But how will you know?” I asked. “She’ll show me. She’ll have to.” Just then Irene’s taxi arrived. One of the men in the street ran to open the door, and then another man pushed him. Other men were also pushing and shouting, and a fight began. Irene was in the middle of it, but Holmes ran to help her. Then suddenly he fell to the ground, with blood running down his face. Irene hurried to her front door, but she looked back. “How kind of him to help me! Is the poor man hurt?” she called. “He’s dead,” cried some voices. “No, he’s only hurt,” cried others. “Bring him into the living room,” she said. Some people carried Holmes into the house. I waited outside the window and watched. I saw how beautiful Irene was. Then Holmes put up his hand, and I threw the smoke-stick into the room. At once, the people in the street and in the house all began to shout “Fire!” very loudly. The house was full of smoke. I walked away, and ten minutes later Holmes came to meet me. “Well done, Watson,” he said. “Have you got the photo?” I asked. “I know where it is. She showed me.” he answered. “But why did she show you?” “It’s easy,” he said, and laughed. “You saw all those people in the street? I paid them to help us. It wasn’t a real fight and the blood wasn’t real. When people shout ‘Fire!’, a woman runs to the most important thing in her house, her baby, her gold, or…a photo. Irene ran to find her photo which is in a cupboard in the living room. I saw it. But I did not take it. Tomorrow we will go to the palace and tell it to the King first. However, Gurnah, 72, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2021. He is the first black writer to receive the prize since Toni Momson in 1993, and the first African to win the award in more than ten years. In 1964, Gurnah had to escape to England at the age of 18 because of a violent uprising (暴力起义). Miserable, poor, homesick, he began to write short passages about home in his diary, then longer articles, then stories about other people. The habit of writing to understand and record his hard life eventually made him complete the first novel, and then nine more. Gurnah’s first language is Swahili, but he used English as his literary language, with his prose(散文) often influenced by works of Swahili, Arabic and German. He drew on the imagery and stories from the Quran, as well as from Arabic and Persian poetry, especially “The Arabian Nights”. A novelist described his prose as being like a gentle knife slowly moving in. “He is writing stories that are often quiet stories of people who aren’t heard, but there’s an insistence there that we listen.” the novelist said. A director from Nigeria said that she expected the Nobel Prize would draw a larger audience for Gurnah on the African continent, where his work is not very widely known, and that she hoped his historical fiction might encourage younger generations to think more carefully and deeply about their countries’ pasts. Though Gurnah hasn’t lived in Tanzania since he was a teenager, the country continues to give Gurnah the ideas for creating. “You don’t have to be there to write about a place,” he said. “It’s all in the fiber of everything you are.” He also said that his homeland always asserts(积极表达) himself in his imagination. 34. But recently, it has caught uncommon attention: It can be a sign of catching COVID-19. Whatever the cause, here are some things you should remember if you develop a fever. Don’t have certain drinks. Alcohol (酒精), soda (苏打) and caffeinated (含咖啡因的) drinks should be avoided when you have a fever. They can cause your body to lose water when it really needs a lot of water. Do not dress too warmly or put yourself in a place that is too hot. This can influence the body’s ability to regulate (调节) its temperature and make your fever worse. Don’t double your medicines. Although fever-reducing medicines are very useful for treating fever, taking more than the recommended amount can cause serious harm to your health and even death. Don’t stay hungry. Amazing Science B That evening Holmes again wore different clothes, and a large, black hat. But it was not just the clothes that were different. He changed his face, his hair—everything. He was a different man. We walked together to Serpentine Avenue. “Bring him into the living room” she said. The tool is an AI chatbot system that was created by OpenAI company in America and went public in November 2022. ChatGPT can remember the topic of your conversation, answer your questions and write stories and any other written texts you can think of. It gets its answers from a great deal of information on the Internet. You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming (编程) help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to complete everything humans can do yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound completely correct. D Growing up in Zanzibar, Tanzania, Abdulrazak Gurnah never considered the possibility that he might one day be a writer. “It wasn’t something you could say ‘I want to be a writer.’ as you were growing up.” He thought he would become “something useful, like an engineer”. 34. What can we learn about Gurnah? A. He is the first African to win the award. B. He writes his novels in Swahill and English. C. He spends most of his life in Tanzania. D.
