When photographer Elizabeth Kahane’s husband asked where in New York they should live after their engagement in 1998, she had one clear wish: a view of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “It’s so funny, looking back, why it was so important to me and why that was my answer. But trust me, it was,” said Kahane, who loves the parade deeply.
The couple moved into a third-floor apartment on Central Park West. Its windows offered the perfect spot to watch and photograph the parade, which moves through Manhattan to Macy’s store on Thanksgiving morning. Kahane has filmed the event almost every year since, missing it just twice in over 25 years. Her new book Come Join the Parade features 160 of her photos.
Her images show marching bands, cheerleaders, floats, and crowds of viewers. But the main attractions are the huge balloons. SpongeBob SquarePants looks down at people below; the Grinch glares ahead with his dog Max. These photos require what Kahane calls a “one foot in, one foot out” method. “You won’t get that shot of Kermit if you’re not hanging out the window,” she explained.
For Kahane’s family, watching the parade is a tradition. She prepares by having the windows cleaned and ordering special food. When her son was young, she would invite his friends’ families over. She would take photos from a separate room, careful not to set a dangerous example for the children with her photography style.
The parade began in 1924 when Macy’s workers, many new to America, celebrated the store’s new location. It has become a major TV event, with 28.5 million viewers last year. Even during COVID-19 in 2020, the parade continued as a TV-only show. Kahane’s photos capture changing popular culture, as new balloon characters join or replace older ones each year. “Photography can capture a moment,” she said. “It’s a point in time that won’t happen again”.
4. What did Kahane want in her home?
A. A quiet location. B. A parade view.
C. A larger space. D. A better price.
5. Why did Kahane choose this apartment?
A. She loved city life. B. She followed her dream.
C. She needed more space. D. She wanted city views.
6. What shows Kahane’s devotion?
A. She risks for photos.
B. She buys new cameras.
C. She studies photography.
D. She arrives very early.
7. What changes in the parade?
A. The route gets longer.
B. The food becomes more delicious.
C. The balloons change yearly.
D. The time starts earlier.

Tennis is a popular sport with growing impact on trends, from clothing to movies. Now, it’s even influencing furniture design. Belgium eco-designer Mathilde Wittock is creating furniture from discarded tennis balls. She chose to repurpose tennis balls due to their short lifespan. “It takes around 24 different manufacturing steps to produce a tennis ball, which is around five days. Then it has such a short lifespan,” Wittock told CNN. She aims to keep the 300 million tennis balls produced annually out of landfills.
Wittock graduated in 2021 from Central Saint Martins with degrees in product design and natural design. Her degree project, Soundbounce, was an acoustic (隔音的) material made from recycled tennis balls, inspired by her sensitivity to noise. “Being very sensitive to noise, the tennis ball presented an opportunity to address this issue,” she said. “And, with noise pollution an ever-increasing problem, its effects are still largely unknown, but it is evident that it negatively impacts physical and mental health so creating solutions for this is key.”
Creating furniture from tennis balls is challenging. Wittock cuts each ball by hand along the white line, removes the brand logo, and creates frames with holes where the taken-apart balls fit. The result is a padded (衬垫) surface excellent for sound reduction. It takes her three to four weeks to complete a chaise, which she sells for $2,900. Each ball is dyed by hand to match the client’s space.
The tennis balls Wittock uses are donated from tennis clubs. She now works with the Federation of Wallonia in Brussels, who offered her their entire stock of 100,000 balls. This will last for a while as Wittock can only use around 1,800 a week.
The life of these tennis balls doesn’t end as furniture. When the soft covering wears away or the rubber breaks down, the furniture pieces can be taken apart and recycled into other useful objects like playground mats. Being able to keep reusing materials is key to eco-design. Wittock’s work demonstrates how discarded items can be transformed into functional, sustainable products.
8 What was Soundbounce inspired by?
A. Wittock’s love for tennis. B. Wittock’s design degrees.
C. Wittock’s sensitivity to noise. D. Wittock’s wish to recycle balls.
9. How does Wittock make the furniture sound-reducing?
A. By using special machines. B. By creating padded surfaces.
C. By adding extra coverings. D. By choosing thick materials.
10. Why does the author mention the Federation of Wallonia?
A. To show Wittock’s social skills. B. To show the large demand for balls.
C. To show the support for Wittock’s work. D. To show the popularity of Wittock’s furniture.
11. What does the author think of Wittock’s work?
A. It’s innovative. B. It’s wasteful. C. It’s ordinary. D. It’s expensive.
D
Construction workers recently found the ruins of a large pyramid beside a highway in Mexico. After discovering the site, researchers collected many ancient objects that will be studied in their laboratories over the coming months. The structure was found in June 2024 during highway expansion work in Hidalgo, central Mexico. The discovery happened by chance as workers were adding a third lane to the federal highway, showing how ancient structures can still be found during modern construction projects.
Scientists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History went to study the site. They used drones to take pictures and collected 155 items, including pieces of pottery, stone tools, and shells. To protect the old building, they built a large wall around the pyramid, which is 43 meters long and 11.7 meters high.
The pyramid is part of an old settlement called San Miguel, built between 650-1519 CE. The area was ruled by the “Metzca lordship,” which influenced the region until the 1500s. People have lived in this region for a very long time, with the oldest settlements dating back at least 14,000 years. This shows that many different groups of people have lived here over thousands of years.
Scientists keep finding hidden ancient buildings in Mexico and other parts of the Americas. Many discoveries are made using LiDAR, a technology that uses laser light to see things concealed under plants and trees. This tool helps archaeologists (考古学家) find old structures that they couldn’t see just by looking at the ground.
Last year, researchers used LiDAR to find an 18-kilometer road that connected ancient Maya cities over 1,200 years ago. In Guatemala, they also discovered a previously unknown Maya civilization with 964 settlements connected by 177 kilometers of ancient roads. These findings show that the Americas had complex and thriving societies long before European settlers arrived. The discoveries remind us how advanced these ancient civilizations were, though their development was later interrupted by colonization. Each new discovery helps build a more complete picture of these remarkable ancient societies.
12. What action did scientists take first after discovering the site?
A. They restored the pyramid. B. They contacted local authorities.
C. They removed all artifacts. D. They photographed the site.
13. What does the underlined word “concealed” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Ancient. B. Hidden. C. Risky. D. Connected.
14. What does the author convey in the last paragraph?
A. Maya civilization was primitive. B. European settlers improved local life.
C. Ancient Americas had advanced societies. D. Modern technology surpasses ancient wisdom.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Mexico builds new highways. B. Ancient ruins need protection.
C. Unexpected discovery reveals past civilization. D. Modern technology helps archaeological work.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
Yesterday, our next door neighbour, Mrs. Green, was having a difficult day. I noticed something was wrong when I saw her pacing back and forth in her yard with a worried look on her face.
I went over to ask if she was okay. With a sigh, she told me that her car had broken down and she had an important doctor’s appointment that she couldn’t miss. Her son, Tom, was away on a business trip and couldn’t help her at the moment.
Without hesitation, I said I could drive her to the doctor’s. She was so relieved and grateful. On the way, she shared with me that she had been feeling a bit under the weather lately and this doctor’s visit was crucial for her to get some proper medical advice.
When we arrived at the doctor’s office, I waited patiently in the waiting room. After a while, Mrs. Green came out with a much more relaxed expression. She said the doctor had given her some useful medications and positive advice, which made her feel much better.
However, when we got back home, we found that there was a big puddle(水洼) of water in front of her house. It turned out that a pipe in her backyard had burst while we were away. Mrs. Green’s face fell again, and she seemed at a loss.
I quickly took out my phone and started to call some local plumbers(水管工), but it was already late in the afternoon, and most of them were either busy with other jobs or had already closed for the day. Mrs. Green’s anxiety grew as the water continued to-spread. We tried to use some old towels to soak up the water, but it was a useless effort against the continuous flow. The situation seemed rather hopeless at that moment, and we were both starting to worry about the potential damage to her house.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just then, my husband, Jack, came back from work.

8. What was Soundbounce inspired by?

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
However when we got back home, we found that there was a big puddle(水洼) of water in front of her house.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Mrs. Green, with tears in her eyes, thanked us sincerely.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Just then, my husband, Jack, came back from work. Seeing our worried faces and the messy scene, he immediately asked what had happened. After learning about the burst pipe, he rolled up his sleeves and said he would give it a try. Jack was handy with tools and had some basic knowledge of plumbing. He quickly located the source of the leak and managed to turn off the main water supply. Then, he spent nearly an hour fixing the pipe with the tools we had at home. Although he got all wet, he didn’t stop until the problem was completely solved.
Mrs. Green, with tears in her eyes, thanked us sincerely. She said she didn’t know what she would have done without our help. She was deeply touched by our kindness and willingness to go out of our way for her. From that day on, our relationship with Mrs. Green became even closer. We often visited each other, shared meals, and helped one another whenever in need. This experience taught us that a little help can make a big difference in someone’s life, and the warmth of the neighborhood lies in these acts of kindness.
