Ancient China amazed the world with its wisdom. Some of its inventions continue to influence us today. Four Chinese irrigation sites (灌溉点) were added to the 2018 list of World Heritage Irrigation Structures (世界灌溉工程遗产). Let’s take a look at these amazing sites.
Dujiangyan
Dujiangyan is a wonder in the world history of irrigation structures. More than 2, 000 years ago, Chengdu was in danger because of floods (洪水) from the Minjiang River. Li Bing, a local official, designed the Dujiangyan irrigation system, which could control the water run from the mountains to the Chengdu Plain all year round.
Changqu Canal (运河)
Changqu Canal, also known as Baiqi Canal, is in the city of Xiangyang in Hubei Province. It is 48 km long in total and it was first used to transport soldiers. It was later used for irrigation—in fact, it is still used to provide water to more than 30, 000 mu ( 20 square km) of farmland.
Lingqu Canal
Located in Xing’an County, Guangxi Province, Lingqu Canal was built 2, 000 years ago. It is the oldest canal in the world. It was built to transport things for the army. “It magically lowers the pressure of transportation along the north and south waterways,” according to the Travel China Guide. It also turned Xing’ an into an agriculturally (农业) developed area.
Jiang- Xi Dam
The Jiang- Xi Dam in Zhejiang Province actually includes two dams— the Jiang and Xi dams. Built in the 14th century, it improved life for local people for centuries. It not only plays an important role in irrigation, but also is good for environmental protection.

The Chinese language differs from western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. As one of the most ancient kinds of characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture.
Chinese characters began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese characters. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent (代表) different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified and others have been made more difficult over time.
However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountain tops together. This became one mountain top and three lines, and over time it turned into the character used nowadays.
Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects. Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down” which are opposite to each other.
Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a way was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope of making learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people. And now they have widespread use in China.
8.Which is NOT included in the step of inventing the first Chinese characters?
A.Watching the footprints of animals. B.Creating shapes of objects.
C.Using different shapes. D.Drawing physical objects.
9.Which Chinese character used the underlined method?
A.山 B.竹 C.明 D.妈
10.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before.
B.Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by large numbers of people.
C.Chinese characters appeared at the very beginning and are still in use today like
other ancient symbols.
D.Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and
characters together.
11.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.How to Form Chinese Characters.
B.The Development of Chinese characters.
C.The History of the Chinese Language.
D.The difference between Chinese and Western Language.

Warming temperatures and shorter winters might sound like the end of snow days. However, rising temperatures may actually cause snowstorms to drop more snow, says David Robinson. He is a professor at a university in New Jersey. He studies climate change.
Temperature change is one of the greatest changes in Earth’s climate over a long period of time. It can happen naturally or because of human activities, such as burning gas and coal. Burning these fuels (燃料) produces carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and other pollutants into the atmosphere (大气层), which hold heat in the atmosphere, leading to warmer global temperatures over time.
But how could warmer temperatures lead to more snow? To get snow, you need moisture (水汽) and freezing temperatures (0℃ or less), says Robinson. Without moisture in the air, there is no precipitation (rain or snow). Robinson says there are signs that snowstorms are becoming stronger. This is because of the connection between moisture and precipitation.
“The warmer the air becomes, the more moisture it holds. So, if it’s warming and still cold enough to snow, you can get more snow,” Robinson says.
Of the 10 biggest snowfalls in D.C. region (地区), five happened in the past 25 years, according to the NWS. During that same time period, average winter temperatures in D. C. increased. In 1996, the average winter temperature was 1.8℃. In 2020, it was 6℃.
Weather experts suggest that rising temperatures may make winter shorter and less cold. But for now, the snow is still falling. One day, winter might not have any days below the freezing temperature. Once temperatures stay above freezing, snowstorms become rain. Until then, we might continue to see strong storms.
According to Robinson, that time could come sooner than we think. He says, “When we look back, years from now, we may see that this was the breaking point.”
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How Earth’s climate changes. B. What causes rising temperatures.
C. What produces carbon dioxide. D. How pollution influences climate.
13. What will the warming temperatures cause according to the text?
A. Less coal. B. Drier weather.
C. Longer winters. D. Stronger snowstorms.
14. What is the purpose of paragraph 5?
A. To introduce D. C.
B. To report the biggest 10 snowstorms.
C. To support Robinson’s ideas.
D. To show the averages of temperatures.
15. What does Robinson think of the future warming temperatures?
A. Impossible. B. Serious. C. Meaningless. D. Amazing.

Red envelopes ( hongbao in Chinese) are popular gifts that people give during important festivals and celebrations in China. The red colour means good luck and 31 (happy).
It’s not completely clear where this tradition comes from. But it might 32 (connect) with an old story about lucky money, which is also called yasuiqian in Chinese. In ancient times, there was a terrible monster (魔鬼) called Sui. This monster was totally black except 33 its white hands. Every year on Chinese New Year’s Eve, it would come to touch a 34 (sleep) child’s forehead three times. Then the child would get a headache and fever and finally become a fool. In order to keep their children safe from being harmed by Sui, parents would keep their lights on and stay up the whole night, which was called “waiting for Sui”.
One New Year’s Eve, in Jiaxing, there was an old couple fearing that Sui would come to harm their son. So, the child was given eight coins to play with to keep him 35 (wake). The child wrapped(包裹)the coins in red paper, and then he played with the packet(小包)until he was so tired 36 he fell asleep. As red is considered to have the ability 37 (protect) against monsters in Chinese tradition, the couple placed the packet with eight coins under their son’s pillow(枕头). When everybody fell asleep, Sui appeared and walked towards the 38 (child) bed. But when the monster tried to touch his forehead, the eight coins gave off a strong light from the red packet, which scared it away. This story spread 39 (rapid) through their village, and from then on, giving red envelopes became a way to keep children safe and bring good luck.
Now, grandparents and parents give their grandchildren and children red envelopes, 40 (wish) them good luck in the new year. Sometimes, the lucky money is also given to the elderly to wish them long life and health.

第三部分 书面表达 (共两节,满分30分)
第一节 阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
People in the countryside are used to having unexpected visitors—wild animals like frogs and snakes. But what if the visitor is an elephant?
Pu Cuifen, a villager from Yunnan Province, experienced that two years ago. “I’ve only seen elephants in a zoo before, not expecting a wild elephant would appear at my doorstep,” said Pu. The elephants were harmful to no one, but had corn and beans on the farm. The villagers lost up to 50,000 yuan. Earlier than that, villagers would drive away the elephants to protect their crops (庄稼), which made the animals angry and led to human injuries (伤害) or deaths.
Now the government has helped to pay the money for the crops damaged (破坏) by elephants. Such things will help protect the interests of farmers, and at the same time avoid the wild animals being hurt by humans. The government has also created “dining halls” for the wild elephants to grow their favorite food, such as elephant grass and bamboo. Villagers now simply leave the elephants alone. “Our corn might get damaged, but we treat them with care and accept them with love.” said Pu.
Yunnan Province is not the only example of protecting wild animals. In Xizang, Migmar used to be a hunter, but now has become a rescuer (营救者) at the wildlife rescue station of Qomolangma. He and his friends take turns to go around to check there’s no trouble or danger for wild animals every day. The wildlife rescue station was set up in 2019. From then on, they have saved 17 wild animals. During this period, they learned to bandage the animals and clean their wounds, and set them free into the wild when they got well again. “Animals don’t talk, but I can feel their trust. We have the responsibility to protect them,” said Migmar.
Examples of taking care of wild animals appear more around us. From damage to protection, people see more changing human-wildlife relations. Even the simplest change and action can make a difference to the world.
41. What does “that” refer to in Paragraph Two?
42. What’s the result of the villagers driving away the elephants?
43. Why did the government create “dining halls” for the wild elephants?
44. How did Migmar and his friends save wild animals?
45. What do the two examples have in common?
