Catarin a Rosa Morais Chato had heart surgery when she was just 6 months old to repair a hole in her heart. The operation was effective in closing the hole, but four years later, she developed pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a type of high blood pressure in the heart and lungs that can be linked with congenital (先天的) heart disease — and for which there is no cure.
Her symptoms (症状) included coughing, exhaustion, chest pain and feeling faint, especially when climbing stairs. She was told to stop all forms of exercise, since physical activity would be too demanding on her body. “My dream of dancing died that day,” she says, adding that she felt lonely when she couldn’t join her friends on the sports field.
Following her diagnosis (诊断), she quickly began treatment to help manage her symptoms, which enabled her to live a fairly normal life. That includes working as a personal care assistant, helping nurses in the same hospital where she was born. At first, she found the long hours on her feet very tiring. But thanks to a flexible schedule, as well as learning to go at her own speed, “It was more than I can expect,” she says.
Reflecting on the challenges she has overcome, Chato feels proud. “Despite all the sad times I have been through, I am alive. I work, drive, travel, and do housekeeping, I get to watch my nephews grow up,” she says. “25 years ago there was not as much hope for people with PAH. My advice to anyone is: Be happy, enjoy every minute of your life and don’t give up.”
1. Why did Chato give up her dream?
A. She was unwilling to see others. B. Her physical state worsened.
C. She had to receive treatment. D. Her interest in dancing was reduced.
2. How did Chato manage her work?
A. By changing work speed. B. By getting extra breaks.
C By asking others for help. D. By being more patient.
3 Which words can best describe Chato?
A. Energetic and talkative. B. Courageous and determined.
C. Thoughtful and gifted. D. Humorous and honest.

While the teams of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar competed in the fields, it was worth noting that it was not only soccer that caught the world’s attention, but also the video assistant referee (VAR) technology (视频助理裁判技术). Like it or dislike it, the VAR is a part of football games today.
Many football fans question whether the system made the game better or if it added an unnecessary complexity (复杂性) to the beautiful game as a number of debatable decisions were made involving the VAR — it slows down the game; the offside (越位) law sometimes becomes inflexible. The introduction of the VAR means top-level football games are now easily affected by stoppages and delays with the on-field referee often waiting for decisions to be made by those in offices often far away from the stadiums.
Actually, the use of video match officials in football was included in the 2018/2019edition of the Laws of the Game and was already used at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Since then, the system has been applied in over 100 competitions worldwide.
Despite protest, FIFA considered the first use of the VAR to be a triumph, with referee committee head Pierluigi Collina claiming that 99.3 percent of “match-changing” decisions were called correctly at the World Cup — “very, very close to perfection”. Without the VAR, referees called 95 percent of the incidents correctly.
Not only football, sports tech to support a referee’s decision-making is widely used by other major sports in professional and Olympic games to assist referees to make the correct decisions. Tennis employs the Hawk-Eye Live system on competition courts, and the NBA has long used instant replay and other-high-tech aids to make sure players are shooting within the time given by the shot clock in order for the referees to make the right call.
We agree that sports tech is still not perfect in the field of sports events. People’s feelings are not towards those technologies themselves, but the current shortcomings of the application of the technology. However, fairness and consistency (一致性) should not be a zero-sum choice. Efforts should be improved further and reduce disturbance to beautiful games.
4. Why do many football fans question the VAR technology?
A. It sometimes becomes inflexible. B. It leads to many arguable decisions.
C. It makes competitions unattractive. D. It is easily affected by on-field referees.
5. What does the underlined word “triumph” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Beginning. B. Test. C. Symbol. D. Success.
6. Why are tennis and the NBA mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To prove the variety of sports tech.
B. To introduce the benefits of sports tech.
C. To show sports tech’s wide application.
D. To explain the development of sports tech.

Often, research surrounding non-native — also referred to as invasive (入侵的) — species focuses on the negative impact on the environments they invade. Non-native species represent threats or even disasters; some are even famous for it. But according to a new study from Brown University, while the negative aspects of non-native life, including the increased risk of causing extinction to other species, are mainly talked about, the positives are not always addressed. Researchers say that non-native species also have the ability to increase biodiversity (生物多样性) within habitats.
As far as famously feared non-native species go, zebra mussels are high on the unwanted list. They originated in the waters of Eurasia and have grown to become a major issue in lakes and waterways across the Great Lakes, as well as in states such as Texas and California. In unnatural habitats, they reproduce rapidly, outcompeting native species for resources. Additionally, they attach themselves to hard surfaces, such as pipes and boats, costing millions to remove.
But for its research, the team decided to focus not only on non-native species’ negative impacts but also on what they can contribute to habitats. In forests, the earthworms have the ability to change the ecosystem negatively. However, when earthworms are present in agricultural land, there is a possibility for a 25-percent increase in the productivity of agricultural crops. As far as brown trout — a non-native species in New Zealand — are concerned, locals have embraced the fish, enjoying the economic and recreational benefits of fishing for the species and adding it to their local food.
Biologist Dov Sax, along with co-authors of the Brown University study, says that these benefits are not as uncommon as past research on invasive species may suggest.
“Our new paper argues that the positive impacts of non-native species are neither unexpected nor rare but instead common and important,” says Sax.
7. What does the new study focus on?
A. Bad influence of invasive species. B. Uncertain future some species face.
C. Possible benefits non-native species bring. D. The importance of biodiversity protection.
8. What can we learn about zebra mussels from paragraph 2?
A. They are listed as endangered species. B. They disturb the local natural balance.
C. They receive a warm welcome in Texas. D. They bring huge business opportunities.
9. What is locals’ attitude to the brown trout?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Discontent.
10. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A Say No to the Non-Native Species B. What do Unnatural Habitats Mean?
C. A Close Link Between Researches D. Are Invasive Species Always Bad?

Mom’s Decision to Spend More Time with Son
One sunny afternoon, young Timmy sat on the front steps of their cozy house, his chin (下巴) resting on his hands, eyes fixed on the street. His friends were playing in the park across the road, their laughter filling the air, but Timmy didn’t join them. He was waiting for his mom to come home.
Timmy’s mom, Mrs. Thompson, was a hard-working real estate agent (房地产经纪人). She was constantly on the go, showing houses to clients, attending meetings, and working late into the night. Most days, Timmy only saw her in the early morning rush before school or briefly in the evening when she was too tired to do much more than give him a quick hug.
That day, when Mrs. Thompson finally pulled up in her car, she noticed Timmy’s sad expression. As she got out of the car, Timmy ran up to her, his eyes lighting up for a moment. “Mom, can we play a game today? Like we used to?” he asked hopefully. Mrs. Thompson looked at her watch and sighed. “Not today, honey. I have so much work to do. Maybe tomorrow.” Timmy’s shoulders slumped, and he quietly walked back to the steps.
That evening, as Mrs. Thompson sat at her desk, going through piles of paperwork, she couldn’t get Timmy’s disappointed face out of her mind. She realized that she had been so focused on her career that she was missing out on her son’s childhood. After much thought, she made a decision. She would take some time off work to be with Timmy.
The next morning, Mrs. Thompson called her boss and explained the situation. To her relief, her boss was understanding and gave her a week off. She then went to Timmy’s room with a big smile on her face.

【答案】 She said, “Timmy, I’m going to take a whole week off work, just for us!” Timmy’s eyes widened in surprise and excitement. He jumped out of bed and hugged his mom tightly. “Really, Mom? That’s amazing!” They spent the morning planning all the things they would do together. They decided to go to the zoo first. As they drove to the zoo, Timmy chatted non-stop, his face glowing with happiness. Upon arrival, they rushed towards the panda enclosure, where they watched in awe as the cute pandas munched on bamboo. Timmy laughed out loud when one panda rolled over like a clumsy ball. Mrs. Thompson photographed these precious moments, feeling a sense of contentment she hadn’t experienced in a long time.
However, just as they were playing, Mrs. Thompson’s phone rang. It was one of her most important clients. The client had an urgent question about a house they were interested in buying. Mrs. Thompson hesitated for a moment. Looking at Timmy’s excited face, she made a choice. She silenced her phone and put it back in her bag. She turned to Timmy and said, “Nothing is more important than this time with you, Timmy.” They spent the rest of the day at the zoo, exploring every corner, and even had a picnic lunch on the grass. By the end of the day, both Timmy and Mrs. Thompson were tired but filled with joy.
