It is suitable from cables with a diameter(直径)between 5 and 9 mm.

Want to read a perfect children’s book? Explore some recommendations from trusted critics.
My Brother Is Away(Sara Greenwood, illustrated by Luisa Uribe)
It’s never easy to explain that a family member is kept in prison, and it can be especially hard for children. This touching book draws on the author’s own childhood to tell the story of a young girl whose brother is in prison. What does she say to her friends who have seen him on the news? And will he still love her? A gentle and hopeful story for kids about very adult situations and complex feelings.(For ages 5 to 8)
Eyes that Kiss in the Corners(Joanna Ho, illustrated by Dung Ho)
This book is brilliantly written because it focuses both on how the characters’ eyes look and on how they see. Focusing on a young girl who takes pride in her “eyes that kiss in the corner and glow like warm tea”, Joanna Ho’s lyrical intergenerational story combines with Dung Ho’s warm and often magical imagery to bring us a celebration on how we see the world — and how we see ourselves.(For ages 4 to 8)
Rez Dogs(Joseph Bruchac)
When COVID-19 hits, Malian is visiting her grandparents. It is in Malian’s grandparents’ stories that she learns how the people of her native community have always taken care of one another. Written in poetry, this book shows us the pandemic through a child’s eyes and helps remind us that responsibility and caring for one another is something we all can do.(For ages 8 to 12)
Listen to the Language of the Trees(Tera Kelly, illustrated by Marie Hermansson)
If you know about the “Wood Wide Web”, you know that trees communicate through the fungi(真菌)that connect their roots. Still, did you know how they support one another with extra food? How they can tell their offspring(后代)apart from other trees? How they can warn other trees when insects attack? Then, consider this outstanding book for kids on the topic.(For ages 4 to 8)
21. What do My Brother Is Away and Eyes that Kiss in the Corners have in common?
A. They both reveal complex feelings.
B. They both tell stories through a girl’s eyes.
C. They are intended for children of same age.
D. They both focus on children’s responsibility.
22. Which book best suits children who are interested in science?
A. Rez Dogs. B. Eyes that Kiss in the Corners.
C. My Brother Is Away. D. Listen to the Language of the Trees.

On May 7th, 1902, on the island of Martinique, Ludgar Sylbaris, the town’s drunk and troublemaker, got thrown into prison. However, it turned out to be the luckiest day of his life.
Saint Pierre on Martinique was at the time known as the Paris of Caribbean. It had a big population of 30, 000 people and was a cultural centre. Martinique is home to Mount Pelee, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
In the weeks before Ludgar Sylbaris was thrown into prison, the volcano on the island of Martinique was showing signs of volcanic activity. Without modern Volcanology, people still sensed that something was going to happen, but they didn’t have a really good sense of how big or how dangerous the threat was. Thousands of people left the countryside and came to the city of Saint Pierre because they thought it would be safer there. That was a terrible mistake.
The day after Ludgar Sylbaris went into that prison cell, Mount Pelee exploded. And in an instant 3, 000 people were killed. A pressure wave flattened every single building. Anyone who was unlucky enough to be outside was instantly burned to death. Those who were in shelter found themselves choking as their lungs were burned from the inside out. There was really no escape except for one person, Ludgar Sylbaris.
The cell he was in had been built as an armory(军械库). So it had been built within the thick walls and it happened that the only opening in it faced away from the eruption. Even so, super-hot air began to force its way underneath the door. And as his cell heated to extremely high temperatures, he was forced to take off his clothes, push them underneath the door and he peed(小便)on the clothes just to try to keep the hot air from entering. He was still badly burned and wasn’t found until four days later when rescuers heard his cries.

e. Ludgar Sylbaris managed to save himself and was rescued.
A. dbace B. abdce C. adceb D. dcabe

A. The cell’s opening faced the eruption. B. The cell was far away from the eruption.
C. Ludgar took proper self-rescue measures. D. Ludgar hid in the heavily-guarded armory.
24. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the island of Martinique.
B. To inspire people to explore the Mount Pelee.
C. To provide ways to survive a volcano eruption.
D. To tell the story of a volcano eruption survivor.

When a woman was talkative while checking out at a Dollar General, her cashier, Emily Dunean didn’t think much of it. But she stayed attentive as the 85-year-old told her about herself. A man behind her in line noticed what was happening, too.
Gerald Swindle was in a hurry to go hunting that day and was a bit annoyed with how long their conversation was going. But as Gerald waited for his turn, his attitude began to change. Not only did he conclude that hunting wasn’t more important than their conversation, but found himself captivated by what the elderly woman said once he stopped to listen.
“You were patient with this lady,” Gerald later said in a video recalling what had happened. “You did nothing but followed her conversation, listening to every word she said, and never rushing her.”
He added, “You showed me what people ought to be. Sometimes it might be the only person they talk to this week. You inspired me and sometimes I need that, so I appreciate it.”
Since posting the video online, it’s become popular with nearly 2 million views!
“I never expected this to come about because it was just a regular day for me. I was just doing my job,” Emily said.
As the comment section quickly filled with others sharing how inspired they felt by Emily’s kindness, higher-ups at Dollar General heard of the story. One day, members from the company’s leadership team showed up to her store and presented her with flower, and a $1,000 donation to a local elementary school.
Best of all, that elderly woman has since come back to the store several times, and the two of them are becoming quite close. “What I’ve learned is so amazing—you can have an effect on people just by being yourself, working at the Dollar General,” she said.

Donating blood gives a ray of hope to someone in need. That’s why Josephine Michaluk, an 81-year-old woman from Canada, is devoted to helping others in this way. In fact, she is the record holder for the most units of blood donated in a lifetime.
Michaluk’s kindness all began in 1965 at the age of 22 when she attended a blood donation event with her sister. Since then, she has been devoted to donating blood for as long as her body allows her to. Last year, at the age of 80, she officially earned the Guinness World Records title for the most whole blood donated by a female. She had donated 203 pints(品脱)of blood at that point. Thus far, she has reached a total of 209 blood donations, and she isn’t done yet.
The inspiring woman continues to maintain over four donations annually. Her O+ blood type is highly desired in medical settings, as it is a more universal match than any other positive blood types. The Red Cross Donation states that O+ makes up 38% of the population in the United States. This generous woman’s contributions continue to help reinforce the supply of blood that can be life-saving.
The kindhearted Canadian mentions the physical examination that is completed before any donation. This may include checking blood pressure, hemoglobin(血红蛋白)levels, and pulse rate of the potential donor. Even after donating a pint of blood, Michaluk mentions that she feels refreshed.
Each donation of a pint from start to finish takes about 75 minutes. Throughout her lifetime, Michaluk has spent roughly 15, 675 minutes donating blood. Back in the summer of 2017, I was busy studying in Beijing when I suddenly got homesick for some Western food.
So, I wandered the streets nearby until I came across a restaurant and finally found it —whole chicken! In my head, I imagined a juicy, tender(嫩的)whole bird with perfectly crispy(酥脆的)browned skin with a side of mashed potatoes(土豆泥): just the way it is always prepared in America, right?
For some reason, I never stopped to think that the Chinese definition of a “whole chicken” might be different from my assumptions. I waved a waiter over and hurriedly pointed to the line on the menu to show my food request. Finally, I would be able to satisfy my eagerness!
Yet, when the bird finally landed on my plate, my wide grin(咧嘴笑)turned to one of shock. Rather than a golden crispy brown, the skin was instead bright yellow. But the most obvious was something that I would rather not have seen at all: the head! In all my years of eating chicken, I had never seen the head still attached to the rest of the body. Yet here it was, staring back at me.
In America, although people understand where meat comes from, the way food is presented means they aren’t reminded of the living animal it once was. When staring face-to-face with the dead bird on my plate, that fact was made much more apparent.
Still, I carried on, trying to ignore the head while I dug into the chicken breast(胸脯肉). But, even here, I found organs(器官)like the heart and lungs that had not been totally removed. Finally, I gave up and just focused on the rice instead.
Afterward, I came to understand chicken is almost always served with the head in Chinese dishes. Although my tolerance for food has expanded since then, I will never forget the first time I ordered a whole chicken and got more than what I had expected.

In late spring and early summer each year, tens of millions of butterflies come out of their chrysalises(蚕蛹)in the butterfly valley in southwest China’s Yunnan province. For butterfly expert Yang Zhenwen, it is the busiest time of the year, but he greets it with great enthusiasm.
Before the break of dawn, Yang has already arrived at the observation point, busily tending to the needs of the awakening butterflies. “Due to warmer temperatures, the ‘butterfly explosion’ this year occurred slightly earlier than usual, and the size of the butterflies is larger than that in previous years,” said 46-year-old Yang, curator(馆长)of the butterfly valley museum. “We expect that there will be about 80 million to 100 million butterflies in the valley during this year’s ‘butterfly explosion’. That seems so crazy,” said Yang. According to Yang, in the valley, more than 320 butterfly species have been identified in specimens or photographs, including the rarest, most primitive, largest and smallest butterflies in China.
Besides Yang, many local villages have also assumed the role of butterfly guardians. However, the journey toward achieving human-butterfly harmony was far from easy. Some two decades ago, the villagers had little awareness of butterfly protection, believing wrongly that butterflies could endanger their food crops. They viewed them as pests that should be removed.
In 1998, Yang began his journey at the agricultural science station in Ma’an’di Township, the very place where the butterfly valley lies. “It was there that I got into a frequent dilemma— the local villagers, seeking to protect their crops, would often turn to pesticides to kill the butterflies,” he said. “However, my sincere love for these creatures forced me to prevent them from harming the delicate insects.”
Now, the development of ecotourism relying on butterfly resources has successfully changed the once extremely poor township. More villagers have started reproducing butterflies. He describes the butterfly valley as a “dream-making machine”, which extends the “butterfly dream” of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
24. What made Yang’s aim to reach human-butterfly harmony hard in the beginning?
A. Warm temperatures in local villages. B. The number and size of the butterflies.
C. Improper location of the butterfly valley. D. Lack of awareness of butterfly protection.
25. What does the underlined word “dilemma” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. A choice difficult to make. B. A fact easy to understand.
C. A duty hard to carry out. D. A situation smooth to deal with.

A. Honest and professional. B. Humorous and creative.
C. Hard-working and strong-willed. D. Generous and easy-going.
27. Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Changing the Poor State of a Town B. Volunteering as a Butterfly Guardian
C. Helping Butterflies Spread Their Wings D. Developing a Relationship with the Locals

Li Dan works as a teacher at East China Jiaotong University in Jiangxi Province. During her spare time, she recreates ancient Chinese delicacies that have been all but lost to history.
Li began working on the project in August 2020, and so far the many traditional dishes she has created include more than 60 from Dream of the Red Mansions, one of China’s four greatest classic novels. To recreate the dishes, she has had to refer to books on traditional recipes, agriculture and even traditional Chinese medicine to learn and adopt traditional techniques.
“I’ve liked the novel since I was a kid because I was always impressed by the food described in it. Its illustration of the dishes vividly shows the elegance of life in that era, so I have been trying to revive them,” said Li. “I make these delicacies in the hope that more people will read the novel.”
Li says that one of the biggest challenges is recreating dishes that require highly seasonal ingredients. If all of her trial dishes fail during the short season, she needs to wait one year to try again. The most difficult dishes she has ever attempted are chicken skin soup with pickled bamboo shoots, and dried eggplant. It took her more than two weeks to finish each of the dishes.
“Clothing and buildings can all be well looked after, whereas food can seldom be conserved in museums. For food, modern people have only ancient accounts to refer to,” she said.
Food is one of many highlights in traditional Chinese culture. As Chinese culture is increasingly accepted by the younger generations, many online influencers like Li also have posted videos of themselves recreating ancient Chinese food. Professional chefs have also been bringing cuisines recorded in ancient books back to life, carrying forward traditional techniques. Through their efforts, the culture and folk customs behind the plate are also being brought back.
24. Why did Li recreate the dishes from Dream of the Red Mansions?
A. To gain more followers online. B. To attract more people to the book.
C. To carry forward traditional techniques. D. To make the dish-making process simple.
25. What brings Li challenges when she recreates traditional dishes?
A. Her lack of experience in cooking. B. Her busy teaching job at university.
C. The high costs of some ingredients. D. The short supply time of some ingredients.
26. What do we know about the dishes recreated by Li?
A. They can be kept in museums. B. There are videos about them online.
C. Professional chefs speak highly of them. D. They are from China’s four classic novels.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. New life of traditional Chinese dishes
B. A hobby turned into a second career
C. Media influence on traditional Chinese culture
D. Traditional Chinese food shines on the world stage

On August 21, 1911, a plumber(水管工)in the Louvre Museum in Paris noticed a man standing in front of a door, unable to open it because of the missing doorknob(门把). The plumber used his key to open the door for the man, who was dressed in a white uniform of the Louvre’s maintenance staff(维护人员). In fact, the unknown man had something very valuable hidden underneath his uniform: Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
The security was unbelievably terrible, especially on a painting with the then-insignificant reputation of the Mona Lisa. No one was even aware of the theft(偷窃)until the next day when a painter named Louis Beroud came to copy the painting. An alarm was raised, and police later found the glass box in a service stairway.
Days passed, but no evidence was found. Great anger quickly grew and spread among the public and press. But no one could even figure out a motive for the theft. “Why the theft happened is a mystery to me, as I consider the picture valueless in the hands of a private individual,” said the assistant curator(馆长), Monsieur Benedite.
Two years of silence followed, and the theft was almost forgotten. Then a man calling himself “Leonardo”
contacted Alfredo Geri, an art dealer in Florence, Italy, saying he had the Mona Lisa and meant to return the painting to da Vinci’s homeland. Geri managed to talk“Leonardo”into bringing the painting to Florence, promising him 500, 000 lire for his effort. Mike Goldberg spent his early career working in financial services, putting in long hours for 12 years. He said, “I was just chasing money. It just wasn’t true to my core.”
In 1996, Goldberg left his job and his home in Los Angeles to follow his passion for underwater diving. As a keen diver, Goldberg developed a strong appreciation for the coral reefs and their significant role in the marine ecosystem. They not only support all kinds of species, but they protect coastal areas, and millions of people depend on them for food and jobs.
Over the last two decades, he has seen coral reefs in the Florida Keys go from colorful and full of life to endangered today. Now, many of the reefs in the area cannot recover naturally on their own and require human intervention to survive. Goldberg knew he needed to do something to help and wanted to find a way to get others involved. “I know more about the history of and what’s happening now to the reefs than most people,” he said, “I'm not a scientist, but that puts me in a unique position to communicate in layman’s terms about what's going on.”
He realized that recreational divers could be a great workforce to help turn around the damage and restore the reefs. Around the same time, he met Dr. Kylie Smith. They spent hours at Goldberg’s dive shop discussing the health of the reefs. In 2019, they teamed up to co-found LCARE, with the goal of empowering divers to help restore the area’s reefs, ensuring their survival for future generations.
LCARE organizes special coral restoration dives for local and out-of-town participants. They spend the day learning about the importance of coral reefs and how to help rebuild them, and then they go on dives to transplant coral grown in a local nursery. So far, the organization has transplanted more than 10, 000 corals and educated more than 2, 000 people. The LCARE team monitors and maintains all of the transplanted corals, making sure they’re thriving.

Sia Godika was 13 when she noticed the barefoot children of construction workers at a building site near her house in Bangalore, India. “Their feet were bare, dirty, cracked and bleeding,” reflects Sia, “They were just walking around that building site like it was an everyday practice for them.” And it was in that moment that Sia realized how lucky she herself was.
She went back home and opened her closet doors, seeing shoes piled up high. She headed to her mother’s closet next, literally dusting off spiderwebs from some shoes. Then she rushed to give them all away to the barefoot children.
Later that year, with the help of her parents, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity organization devoted to providing footwear for those in need, as is clearly shown by its motto: “Donate a sole(鞋底), save a soul.” Telephone calls from people who wanted to help came flooding in. A woman, who was given a virtual reality headset(虚拟现实耳机)experience for her 103rd birthday, chose a walk along a local cliff(悬崖)path — just near her care home. Joyce Penfold put on the headset and treadmill(踏车)combination which can transport people around the world or universe. She was given the opportunity with help from the University of Plymouth’s ‘Generating Older Active Lives Digitally’ program.
Joyce was previously given the chance to try the ROVR, choosing to take a virtual trip to the seaside in Godrevy, Hayle. There she saw a lighthouse in the sea. She liked the technology so much the GOALD team gave her another go at her 103rd birthday party at Tresillian House. That time she chose Maker Heights, just 63 miles from her Falmouth retirement home.
“Usually the only time I go out is when my daughter takes me out, and the furthest we go is just a few miles, for a coffee perhaps and a good old chat,” said Joyce.
The team at the University of Plymouth is attempting to study how technology impacts on the health and well-being of older people. The headset works with an omni-directional(全方向的)treadmill, which allows the user to move in any direction — this gives users the chance to move around freely in a virtual environment as if they were actually there.
“I wasn’t totally surprised because she does accept everything that’s new. I think she was over 70 when she took her first aeroplane flight, so nothing puts her off,” said Joyce’s daughter, Maria Blagden.
“We’re really interested in the use of technology to support physical activity for older adults, and for us this technology has a lot of potential in that regard. As people walk on the treadmill, they get to explore the virtual worlds, and having a range of places to be explored creates a motivation(动力)to be active,” said Dr. Hannah Bradwell, Digital Health Research Fellow for UoP’s GOALD project.

A few years ago I took my sons for ice cream, and while my older son went inside to buy us our milk shakes, my younger son and I waited on the bench(长椅)outside.
At a certain point I realized that sitting right next to me were a little girl with a facial deformity(畸形), her friend(or sister), and her mother.
When my younger son looked up and saw her, he reacted exactly the way you might think a three-year old would react when seeing something that scared him: he started to cry—pretty loudly, too. I hurriedly tried to push him away in the stroller(婴儿推车), not for the benefit of him but to avoid hurting the girl’s feelings, and in my haste I caused my older son to knock over the shakes, and, well, it was a scene quite different from what I had hoped for. But as I pushed my younger son’s stroller away I heard the little girl’s mom say, in as sweet and calm a voice as you can imagine, “Okay, guys, I think it’s time to go.” And that just set me thinking.
For the rest of the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about how that scene had played out. It occurred to me that they probably went through something like that hundreds of times a day. What would that be like? What could I be teaching my children so they could understand how to respond better next time? What I should have done, instead of trying to avoid the situation, was involve the girl and her mother in conversation. If my son cried, so be it: kids cry. I should have set a better example for him, and shown him there was nothing to fear.
As I was thinking about the scene, the song Wonder by Natalie Merchant came on the radio that night, and something about the words to the song just got to me. That very night, I started writing Wonder, a story about a boy with a facial difference.
24. What made the younger son cry?
A. That his mother pushed him away. B. That his brother upset the milk shakes.
C. That he was unwilling to react to the girl. D. That he was scared by the girl’s appearance.
25. The underlined word “haste” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. hurry B. doubt C. sorrow D. turn
26. Why did the author keep thinking about the scene?
A. She regretted not behaving properly. B. She regretted not comforting her son.

At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley(薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke(笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
24. What did the author initially think of her name “Chen Yiwen”?
A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it.
B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C. She understood the intention but still disliked it.
D. Its strange pronunciation made her embarrassed.
25. The author decided to learn calligraphy to ________.
A. pick up a new hobby B. reconnect with her origin
C. gain insights into a new culture D. fit in with local community
26. From the teacher’s words, the author learns that calligraphy ________.
A. reflects the creator’s spirits B. comes from creative energy
C. highlights the design of strokes D. depends on continuous practice
27. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Appreciate what our culture offers. B. Find beauty from your inner self.
C. A great teacher leads you to truth. D. We are the sum of what we create.

An 89-year-old man, Manfred Steiner, has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward and nearly a lifetime thinking about: earning his Ph. D. And now he is a physicist
Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted and because he overcame health problems that could have affected his studies. “But I made it, and this was the most satisfactory point in my life, to finish it,” he said.
When he was young, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein. But his mother and uncle persuaded him that studying medicine would be a better choice. He earned his medical degree in 1955 and moved to the US soon after.
Steiner studied hematology(血液学)at Tufts University and biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became a full professor and led the hematology department at Browns’ medical school from 1985 to 1994. Steiner helped establish a research program in hematology at the University of North Carolina. He directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000.
Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics. “It was something like a wish that was never fulfilled, that always stuck in the back of my head,” he said. At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes.
Physics professor Brad Marston was surprised when Steiner entered his quantum mechanics class. But he became Steiner’s adviser for his dissertation(学位论文)after realizing how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked. “He has written many papers in medical science, more papers than I’ve written in physics,” Marston said. “One thing that’s really true about Manfred is that he perseveres.”
After the university published a story about Steiner on its website, people across the US contacted him to ask for advice on how to go after their dreams later in life. His advice is: Do what you love to do.
24. Why did Steiner value his degree in physics?
A. Because it solved his health problems. B. Because it was his long-pursued dream.
C. Because it met his mother’s expectation. D. Because it was inspired by Albert Einstein.
25. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Steiner’s contributions to teaching. B. Steiner’s researches after retirement.
C. Steiner’s achievements in hematology. D. Steiner’s performances at Tufts University.
26. What impressed Professor Marston most about Steiner?
A. His taking undergraduate classes at 70. B. His writing more papers in physics.
C. His sticking to becoming a physicist. D. His being a role model for Americans.
27. Which of the following can best describe Steiner?
A. Active and open-minded. B. Enthusiastic and easy-going.
C. Intelligent and warm-hearted. D. Perseverant and hard-working.

Officials from Brazil’s Indigenous(原住民)protection agency approached the hut in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. They were witnessing the first recorded dying out of an uncontacted tribe in the country’s history.
The man lying there, the last member of his tribe, had died and with him an entire culture and answers to a thousand questions.
Even his name was a mystery. He was known only as “the Man of the Hole” because of the dozens of holes he had dug over the years in his territory. His age, too, could only be guessed at. He appeared to be about 60, officials said.
It was a sad milestone for a country that in recent years has seen protections for Indigenous groups undermined by an administration that has prioritized(优先)development of the Amazon over conservation.
In Rondonia, the only resident of the 8,000-hectare area lived in complete isolation for at least 26 years after the rest of his group was killed by ranchers(农场主)advancing the agricultural frontier.
Brazil’s Indigenous protection agency, Funai, made direct contact with the last surviving man only in 1996. Marcelo dos Santos, an Indigenous expert, said he was found hiding in his hut. “We tried to establish a conversation and offered corn and arrows, but he was terrified and very aggressive(具有攻击性). From this moment on, we had to respect his isolation.”
Even with protections in place, the territory suffered widespread deforestation up until about 13 years ago. Attacks on the last surviving man continued, as well, including one by armed gunmen in 2009, according to local news reports.
“For me, he was somehow incredible: to be able to survive on his own, not speak to anybody and avoid all contact maybe out of grief or determination,” said Fionad Watson, a research director at Survival International, a London-based rights organization.
24. What did the death of “the Man of the Hole” suggest?
A. An uncontacted tribe went extinct.
B. An entire culture would be recorded.
C. The secrets around him would be unearthed.
D. The protection agency was unwilling to rescue him.
25. The underlined word “undermined” in para. 4 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. strengthened B. monitored C. sought D. weakened
26. What happened to “the Man of the Hole” in 1996?
A. He made the protection agency’s approach a failure.
B. He witnessed the most severe deforestation in history.
C. He escaped being shot by a group of aggressive gunmen.
D. He learned more survival skills with arrows offered by Funai.
27. What did Fiona Watson regard “the Man of the Hole” as?
A. A mystery B. An evolution C. A wonder D. A fortune

A man sat at a metro station in Washington D. C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man noticed there was musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded(鼓掌), nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell’s playing in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment.
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?
24. Why did few people stop to listen to Joshua Bell playing?
A. People were in a hurry. B. They were not interested in music.
C. It was too cold in the subway. D. The performance was not good enough.
25. What did the parents do when children stopped to look at the violinist?
A. They would applaud for the performance. B. They would urge them to continue walking.
C. They would stop to enjoy the music. D. They would give him some money.
26. Why did Joshua Bell play in the metro station?
A. To make more money.
B. To practise his skills in playing music.
C. To made an advertisement for his concert.
D. To find out people’s reaction under such a circumstance.
27. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell us the importance of music. B. To show us how to play music.
C. To set us to think about our life. D. To report a subway performance.

A
On May 7th, 1902, on the island of Martinique, Ludgar Sylbaris, the town’s drunk and troublemaker, got thrown into prison.
21. What caused so many people to die in the volcano eruption?
A. Shortage of survival skills. B. Ignorance of modern Volcanology.
C. Lack of good judgement of the threat. D. Unawareness of the volcanic activity signs.
22. Which of the following is the right order according to the passage?
a. The volcano of Mount Pelee erupted.
b. Buildings were flattened and no one escaped.
c. Thousands of people fled to the city of Saint Pierre.
d. Mount Pelee was showing signs of volcanic activity.
e. Ludgar Sylbaris managed to save himself and was rescued.
A. dbace B. abdce C. adceb D. dcabe
23. Which of the following is true according to the last paragraph?
【答案】21. C 22. D 23. C 24. D
【语篇导读】这是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了一个真实的历史事件——1902年培雷山火山爆发的灾难,以及一个名为Ludgar Sylbaris如何让因为被关在监狱中而意外生还的故事。
21. 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Without modern Volcanology, people still sensed that something was going to happen, but they didn’t have a really good sense of how big or how dangerous the threat was.(由于缺乏现代火山学,人们仍然感觉到有事将要发生,但他们并不真正了解威胁的大小或危险性)”可知, 尽管人们意识到了火山活动的迹象,但由于缺乏现代火山学知识,他们未能准确判断情况的严重性,导致误判和错误的应对措施。这反映了对火山威胁的判断力不足,故选C。
22. 细节理解题。文章第三段“the volcano on the island of Martinique was showing signs of volcanic activity.(马提尼克岛上的火山显示出火山活动的迹象)”对应d;然后提到“Thousands of people left the countryside and came to the city of Saint Pierre.(成千上万的人离开农村来到圣皮埃尔市)”,对应c;第四段“Mount Pelee exploded.(贝利山喷发了)”对应a;然后提到“A pressure wave flattened every single building. Anyone who was unlucky enough to be outside was instantly burned to death.(压力波夷平了每一栋建筑。任何不幸在外面的人都会立即被烧死)”,对应a;最后一段“He was still badly burned and wasn’t found until four days later when rescuers heard his cries.(他仍然严重烧伤,直到四天后救援人员听到他的哭声才被发现)”对应e。
根据原文“Even so, super-hot air began to force its way underneath the door. And as his cell heated to extremely high temperatures, he was forced to take off his clothes, push them underneath the door and he peed on the clothes just to try to keep the hot air from entering.(即便如此,高温的空气开始从门下方涌入。

24. How did Gerald act at the talk between Emily and the customer at first?
A. He listened with full attention. B. He focused on his own hunting.
C. He felt lucky to be not talkative. D. He felt disturbed at the long talk.
25. What does the underlined word “captivated” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Stuck. B. Angered. C. Inspired. D. Attracted.
26. What was the post about?
A. What patience Emily showed to the customer.
B. Why Dollar General became popular online.
C. How Gerald dealt with the customer attentively.
D. How Emily was praised by her company leader.
27. What did Emily learn from the story?
A. Caring for the old can bring benefit to us.
B. Listening to people is a skill to be mastered.
C. It’s sometimes easy to influence other people.
D. Being a cashier is a good way for connection.
【答案】24. D 25. D 26. A 27. C
【语篇导读】这是一篇记叙文。一家商店的收银员耐心倾听一位老年顾客的倾诉并与之交谈,她的故事被发布到网上,引起人们的共鸣。
24. 细节理解题。根据第二段“Gerald Swindle was in a hurry to go hunting that day and was a bit annoyed with how long their conversation was going.(Gerald Swindle那天急着去打猎,对他们的谈话持续了这么长时间感到有些恼火)”可知,Gerald Swindle那天赶着去打猎,前面那个顾客与收银员长时间的对话让他感觉被打扰了,故选D项。
25. 词义猜测题。根据划线词前“But as Gerald waited for his turn, his attitude began to change. Not only did he conclude that hunting wasn’t more important than their conversation(可是Gerald等着轮到他的时候,他的态度开始改变了。他不仅得出结论,打猎并不比他们的谈话更重要)”及划线词后“he stopped to listen(他停下来倾听)”可知,Gerald不仅开始倾听这位老人对收银员的倾诉,而且对她说的话“很感兴趣”,从语境的递进关系判断,划线词的含义是“吸引”,故选D项。
26. 推理判断题。根据第三段内容“‘You were patient with this lady,’ Gerald later said in a video recalling what had happened. ‘You did nothing but followed her conversation, listening to every word she said, and never rushing her.’(‘你对这位女士很有耐心,’Gerald后来在一段视频中回忆发生的事情时说。‘你什么也没做,只是跟着她说话,听她说的每一个字,从不催促她。’)”可知,Gerald在一家名为Dollar General的商店里看到收银员艾米丽耐心倾听一个老年顾客的讲述,Gerald把这段对话的视频发到网上,所以这条视频是关于Emily对顾客表现出的耐心,故选A项。
27. 推理判断题。根据最后一段 “‘What I’ve learned is so amazing—you can have an effect on people just by being yourself, working at the Dollar General,’ she said.(‘我所学到的是如此惊人——你可以通过在Dollar General工作,做你自己来影响别人,’她说)”可知,Emily谈到自己的感悟:有时候很容易影响别人,故选C项。

She intends to go ahead to help others as long as she can. Photographed with a shirt that reads, “Are you the type to save a life?” she challenges others to step outside of their comfort zone to help people around the world.

24. Why did the author go to eat a whole chicken?
A. He missed the food of his home country. B. He wanted to try Chinese-style chicken.
C. He came across a unique restaurant. D. He liked its picture on the menu.
25. What shocked the author most?
A. The chicken’s size. B. The chicken’s dark color.
C. The chicken not being crispy. D. The chicken served with its head.
26. Why did the author give up eating the chicken finally?
A. He disliked its taste. B. He preferred the rice.
C. He found organs inside. D. He missed American food.
27. What does the author think of Chinese food in the end?
A. Acceptable. B. Scary. C. Tasty. D. Comfortable.
28. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Eating habits in China. B. Cooking style of Chinese chicken.
C. My homesickness in China. D. My first taste of a chicken in China.
【答案】24. A 25. D 26. C 27. A 28. D

totally removed. Finally, I gave up and just focused on the rice instead.”(但是,即使在这里,我发现像心脏和肺这样的器官并没有完全去除。最后,我放弃了,只是专注于吃饭)可知,作者最后放弃吃鸡是因为他发现鸡内部的器官并未完全去除,故选C。
27. 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Afterward, I came to understand chicken is almost always served with the head in Chinese dishes. Although my tolerance for food has expanded since then, I will never forget the first time I ordered a whole chicken and got more than what I had expected.”(后来,我明白了,在中国的菜肴中,鸡几乎总是带着头。尽管从那时起,我的食物接受度扩大了,但我永远不会忘记我第一次点了一只整鸡,得到的比我预期的要多)可知,作者认为中国食物是可以接受的,故选A。

The police were brought in and“Leonardo”was found to be Vincenzo Peruggia, a house painter, with a little secret ambition in life.
After a lengthy trial, Peruggia, for some reason, was only sentenced to one year and 15 days in jail, later reduced to seven months and nine days. Despite different versions of the story in some details, the punishment proved to be a small price to pay for the greatest art theft of the 20th century.
24. Why did the plumber help the thief open the door?
A. He just played his part in their plan.
B. He cared little about the painting at all.
C. He took the man for a common worker.
D. He worried about being killed by the thief.
25. What contributed most to the success of the theft?
A. The safety measures weren’t strict. B. The police didn’t try their best at all.
C. The picture enjoyed significant fame. D. The assistant curator was irresponsible.
26. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. A further description of the Mona Lisa. B. A reasonable doubt about the theft.
C. The process of the thief’s being caught. D. The importance of bringing in the police.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Peruggia was slightly punished for the theft.
B. People then showed little interest in the theft.
C. The theft added to the value of the Mona Lisa.
D. The thief paid little money for the Mona Lisa.
【答案】24. C 25. A 26. C 27. A

24. Why did Goldberg leave his job and home in Los Angeles?
A. To pursue his passion. B. To protect coral reefs.
C. To learn the role of corals. D. To start a new career.

A. Most people are ignorant of coral reefs.
B. He had an advantage in getting others involved.
C. Scientists can communicate using scientific terms.
D. He succeeded in helping many reefs recover naturally.
26. What do we know about LCARE?
A. Its members are mainly local divers. B. It was founded by Dr. Kylie Smith.

A. The physical conditions of the older people.
B. The new function of a virtual reality headset.
C. The ways of moving a treadmill in any direction.
D. The effect of technology on the fitness of the aged.
26. What is Bradwell’s attitude towards the use of technology?
A. Favorable. B. Unclear. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.
27. What do we know about Joyce Penfold?
A. She was lonely and went mad with boredom.

根据第二段“At a certain point I realized that sitting right next to me were a little girl with a facial deformity(畸形), her friend(or sister), and her mother.”(在某个时刻,我意识到坐在我旁边的是一个面部畸形的小女孩,她的朋友(或妹妹)和她的母亲),根据文章第三段“When my younger son looked up and saw her, he reacted exactly the way you might think a three-year old would react when seeing something that scared him: he started to cry—pretty loudly, too.”(当我的小儿子抬起头看到她时,他的反应就像一个三岁的孩子看到吓到他的东西时的反应一样:他开始哭了起来,而且哭得很大声)可推知,小儿子是因为被小女孩的外貌吓到而哭泣的,故选D。
25. 词义猜测题。根据文章第三段“I caused my older son to knock over the shakes, and, well, it was a scene quite different from what I had hoped for.”(我把我的大儿子撞倒了,嗯,这是一个与我所希望的完全不同的场景)可知,作者在匆忙中出错。所此处的“haste”意为“匆忙”,故选A。
26. 推理判断题。根据文章第四段“For the rest of the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about how that scene had played out. It occurred to me that they probably went through something like that hundreds of times a day. What I should have done, instead of trying to avoid the situation, was involve the girl and her mother in conversation.”(在那一天的剩余时间里,我无法停止思考那个场景是如何发生的。
根据第四段“What I should have done, instead of trying to avoid the situation, was involve the girl and her mother in conversation. If my son cried, so be it: kids cry. I should have set a better example for him, and shown him there was nothing to fear.”(我应该做的,而不是试图避免这种情况,是让那个女孩和她的母亲参与到对话中。

Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myse$$
