They built new houses, schools and also developed roads. That makes our life easier,” said Kairat.

Robotics has done a world of good for the disabled. New inventions are improving their life. Now, a 17-year-old teen in India has invented a smart spoon that can help people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) (帕金森病). Now more than 7 million people in India have PD.
Aarrav Anil has had a deep interest in science since childhood. This allows the teen to take part in more than 20 robotics competitions around the world. But Aarrav didn’t invent his smart spoon to win a prize. His idea for the invention came from seeing his uncle, who has PD, failing to feed himself. Food kept falling out of his mouth, making him look a mess.
Aarrav wanted his uncle to be able to eat by himself. This encouraged the teen to look for a way to help his uncle. So he decided to invent a new tool. But not everything went well.
“It was not easy to be able to find certain parts I needed in India. I had to buy some from abroad, and it took a long time for them to arrive.” Aarrav said in an interview. Aarrav made a first model, but the spoon was hard for his uncle to hold. “I’ve been improving the invention. It needs to be waterproof (防水的) so that it can be washed. The spoon must be easily taken apart, so that it can be cleaned and turned into a fork. And the spoon needs to be deeper to hold more food,” the teen said.

It was 8:00 am. A group of college students got out of my car to make a video in the park. My job, as the driver, was to stay nearby so that if anything was needed I could open the car.
Knowing that I could have several hours’ free time, I decided to go somewhere and do some reading. Against a wall, I found a beautiful park bench (长凳). I noticed that a man was sitting on one end, but there was plenty of room for at least two more bodies. Walking over, I sat on the end seat to have a rest.
The man on the other end looked at me but remained seated. I quickly discovered that he’d probably spent the night on the bench. His clothes were dirty, his hair was untidy, and soon I caught a bad smell of body sweat (汗水). I looked at him and smiled, and he smiled back with a mouth of blacked-out teeth.
We both sat there for over an hour peacefully. I was reading. He was watching the video making. He then stood up, walked in front of me and bowed. In a little shaky but clear voice, he said, “Thank you.” I lifted my head.
“For what?” I questioned.
He looked at the ground as he said “Usually people won’t even look at me, let alone sit by me. Thank you for treating me like a human being.”
I honestly didn’t know what to say as he turned and walked quickly around the corner. I was shocked. I hadn’t done anything special. I just shared a bench.
To me, he was just someone who wanted a place to rest. That’s exactly what I had wanted. We were no different. I finally realized that my actions had truly meant something to this poor homeless man. So, treating others in an equal (平等的) way can also make a difference to the world.

Dear Linda,
I am very glad to hear from your letter. Now let me tell you about what Chinese students do housework for their families and why they do volunteer work.
Most Chinese students often help their parents with housework. As students, they think doing housework can not only cultivate their independence, but also let them learn how to take care of themselves. By doing housework, they can understand the meaning of fairness. They learn that living together means sharing chores. It also shows their love for their families.

②Many young people from other countries stand by the idea of the BRI. Lashyn, a Kazakh (哈萨克) student at Nazarbayev University, said that in 2013 she visited China. “To me, it was an amazing new world with different cultures.” So she decided to continue learning Chinese. Thandi, 22, from South Africa, said that the BRI helped improve relationships between countries all over the world. “I support a win-win relationship of the BRI,” she told China Daily.

They built new houses, schools and also developed roads. That makes our life easier,” said Kairat.
④The BRI also brings changes to China. Wang Zongnan, a student in Tsinghua University, notices that recently there are more and more people from the Belt and Road countries coming to China as international students. He said, “That really changed how we look at questions and social problems.”
⑤The BRI covers almost all parts of people’s lives, including travel, trade, education, technology and culture. Like a bridge, it continues to bring the world closer than ever.
4. What does the underlined phrase “stand by” in Paragraph 2 mean? ________

C. In Lashyn’s eyes, the BRI helps improve people’s life in her country.
D. The BRI has brought great changes to both China and other countries.

The smart spoon is now being tested at a local college. The test is expected to be completed in early 2024. Aarrav hopes that his smart spoon will be used in hospitals soon.
8. The underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refers to the ________.
A. disease B. interest C. childhood D. competition

A. win a prize B. help his uncle C. save people’s lives D. get the fame
10. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How Aarrav improved the invention. B. Where Aarrav bought certain parts.
C. Why Aarrav felt so disappointed. D. Whom Aarrav made the spoon with.
11. Which part of a magazine is the passage probably taken from?
A. History. B. Business. C. Science. D. Sports.
12. The writer went to the park in the morning to ________.
A. make a video B. read a book C. work as a driver D. meet a friend
13. From Paragraph 3, we can learn that the writer is a ________ person.
A. kind B. brave C. clever D. funny
14 What is the correct order of the story?
① I found a park bench and sat on it. ② I spent over an hour with the man.
③ The man said thank you to me. ④ I looked at the man and smiled.
A. ①→②→④→③ B. ②→①→③→④
C. ④→②→③→① D. ①→④→②→③
15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A Meaningful Job B. An Unexpected “Thank you”
C. A Relaxing Weekday D. A Group of Active Students
