Class Experience
As a professional author, I love talking about books with students, and I especially love urging them to dig deep and think about books beyond a simple “I liked it” or “I didn’t like it”. This class seeks to engage students in meaningful discussions about books while also touching on literary devices like symbolism, foreshadowing, tone and voice. The books selected for this course are modern reads that are less likely to strike students as “required reading”. There is so much to be learned from reading outside our “comfort zone”.
Students need to independently purchase or borrow the selected book, and should have read approximately 1/4 before our first meeting.

In the mid-1980s, I captained a flight from Newark to Los Angeles, a routine journey that became unforgettable when I encountered the legendary Muhammad Ali in first class. Ali, the former heavyweight champion, was returning home from a Parkinson’s clinic.
Being a boxing enthusiast who had fought in college, I admired Ali very much. I described the famous fight against Floyd Patterson, where Ali’s hands-down, dancing approach astonished me. Approaching Ali, I shared my admiration for his ability to strike Patterson before he could defend himself—a moment frozen in boxing history.
After I spoke, there was an awkward pause. I wasn’t sure if Ali had heard me, and I was debating whether to move on or repeat myself. Then his face lit up with a smile. Apparently, the Parkinson’s had caused a short circuit. The champion was standing up in front of his seat when I spoke. He put his hands up in a boxing position, starting to walk slowly back and forth.
Later, Ali’s assistant invited me to first class. Our conversation shifted from boxing to our mutual love for family. I told him I loved my job but I didn’t enjoy being away from home during holidays or missing birthdays and special events. In fact, on that trip I was missing a camping trip with my son. He inquired more about the camping trip and my son’s name.
As our flight landed in Los Angeles, a knock on the cockpit door revealed Ali’s assistant holding a precious gift—a signed 8-by-11-inch photo of Ali. On it, the champion wrote a heartfelt message to my son: “The time your father spends away from home is the price he pays for service to others.”
During 30 years with the airlines, I had many pleasant experiences and many lessons about the generosity and kindness of people from around the world. But 10 years into retirement, what I remember most are Muhammad Ali’s stories about his love for his family and his kindness toward my son.
4. How did Ali react to the author’s description of the fight against Floyd Patterson?
A. He turned a deaf ear to it. B. He rose to a boxing position.
C. He felt kind of embarrassed. D. He was lost in thought for a while.
5. How did the author feel before meeting Ali?
A. Regretful. B. Awkward.
C. Fortunate. D. Precious.
6. Why did Ali offer a signed photo with a message to the author’s son?
A. To inspire the author’s son to be brave.
B. To make up for the author’s son’s camping trip.
C. To promote the author’s son’s understanding of his work.
D. To tell the author’s son the importance of friendship.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Life on the move B. Wisdom in seventeen words
C. An unexpected photo for a son D. Balance between job and family

It is thought that music can make maths more enjoyable keep students engaged and help ease fear or anxiety they have about maths.
To find out more, Turkish researcher Dr Ayca Akin, from the Department of Software Engineering, Antalya Belek University, searched academic databases for research on the topic published between 1975 and 2022. She then combined the results of 55 studies from around the world, involving almost 78,000 young people from kindergarten pupils to university students, to come up with an answer.
Students took maths tests before and after taking part in the intervention and the change in their scores was compared with that of youngsters who didn’t take part in an intervention. The use of music, whether in separate lessons or as part of maths classes, was associated with greater improvement in maths over time. The integrated lessons had the biggest effect, with around 73% of students who had integrated lessons doing significantly better than youngsters who didn’t have any type of musical intervention. Some 69% of students who learned how to play instruments and 58% of students who had normal music lessons improved more than pupils with no musical intervention.
The results also indicate that music helps more with learning arithmetic (算术) than other types of maths and has a bigger impact on younger pupils and those learning more basic mathematical concepts. Dr Akin point s out that maths and music have much in common, such as the use of symmetry symbols. Both subjects also require abstract thought and quantitative reasoning.
Limitations of the analysis include the relatively small number of studies available for inclusion. This meant it wasn’t possible to look at the effect of factors such as gender, socio-economic status and length of musical instruction on the results.
Dr Akin adds, “Encouraging mathematics and music teachers to plan lessons together could help ease students’ anxiety about mathematics, while also boosting achievement.”
8. How did Dr Akin conduct her research?
A. By launching a questionnaire online. B. By creating a data model.
C. By analyzing data worldwide. D. By surveying university students.
9. What were the students asked to do to reflect the effect of the intervention?
A. Take maths tests. B. Develop abstract thought.
C. Plan lessons with music teachers. D. Learn more basic mathematical concepts.
10. Why can music contribute to mathematics learning according to Dr Akin?
A. Music has some similarities with mathematics. B. Music can help students learn mathematical models.
C. Music is involved in mathematical calculation. D. Music comes from mathematics.
11. What does the author think of the research?
A. Overall. B. Sensitive. C. Subjective. D. Imperfect.

Not all birds sing, but those that do—some several thousand species—do it a lot. “Why do birds sing so much?” says Iris Adam, a behavioral neuroscientist at the University of Southern Denmark. “For some reason, birds have a strong drive to sing.” This means hours’ singing every day for some species, and that takes much energy. Plus, singing can be perilous. “Instantly you sing, you reveal yourself,” she says. “Like, where you are, that you even exist, where your territory is—all of that immediately is out in the open for predators (捕食者), for everybody.”
To figure out why, Adam designed experiments on zebra finches—little Australian songbirds with striped heads and a bloom of orange on their cheeks. One of her first experiments involved taking males at the top of their game, and cutting off the connection between their brains and their singing muscles. “Already after two days, they’d lost some of their performance,” she says. “After three weeks, they were back to the same level when they were juveniles (幼鸟) and never had sung before.”
Next, she left the birds intact (完好无损的) but kept them in the dark almost around the clock for a week. The only exception was a few half hour blocks each day when Adam switched the lights on so the finches would feed and drink. Light is what stimulates the birds to sing. However, she would move around and tap the cage when the birds wanted to sing.
After a week, the birds’ singing muscles lost half their strength. Then she played a male’s song before and after the seven days of darkness, yet she couldn’t hear a difference. But when Adam played it for a group of female birds—who’re the audience for these singing males—six out of nine preferred the song that came from a male who’d been using his singing muscles daily.
Adam’s conclusion is that “songbirds need to exercise their vocal muscles to produce top-performance song. If they don’t sing, they lose performance. So their vocalizations get less attractive to females—and that’s bad”. And this may help explain songbirds’ constant singing.
12. What does the underlined word “perilous” probably mean in paragraph 1?
A. Rewarding. B. Promising. C. Attractive. D. Dangerous.
13. What happened to the male finches after operations?
A. Their brains recovered after three weeks.
B. They lost the ability to sing gradually.
C. Their muscles were back to juvenile level quickly.
D. They became inactive when hunting for food.
14. Why were some male finches left in the dark for a week?
A. To prevent them from singing.
B. To expose them to a new lifestyle.
C. To change their communicating patterns.
D. To test their ability to memorize the past.
15. What is the positive effect of songbirds’ constant singing?
A. It enhanced their lung capacity.
B. It could frighten away their predators.
C It improved their digestive ability.
D. It could keep their vocal muscles in shape.

In Whitney High School, Cerritos, California, which was known for its academic excellence and competitive atmosphere, there were two friends, Sam and Emily, who were preparing for their final exams. Sam and Emily were best friends and had always studied together. Sam was naturally gifted in mathematics, while Emily excelled in history. As their final exams approached, they promised to help each other with their weaker subjects.
They spent weeks preparing, exchanging notes, and quizzing each other. Sam helped Emily understand complex mathematics problems, and Emily helped Sam remember historical dates and events. Their friendship grew stronger as they worked towards their common goal.
However, as the exam day neared, Sam started to feel huge pressure. His parents had high expectations, and he was afraid of letting them down. He began to doubt his abilities, especially in history, which was his weakest subject. Emily noticed Sam’s anxiety and tried to reassure him, but Sam’s stress only seemed to increase. The night before the history exam, Sam admitted to Emily that he was considering cheating because he was so afraid of failing.
Emily was shocked and disappointed. She reminded Sam of all the hard work they had put in and the serious consequences cheating could have. She told him that it was better to try and fail honestly than to succeed through dishonesty.
On the day of the history exam, Sam was extremely nervous. He remembered Emily’s words and knew she was right. He decided to face the exam honestly, using what he had learned from their study sessions.
During the exam, Sam struggled with some of the questions, but he did his best to answer them without turning to cheating. When the exam ended, he felt a mix of relief and uncertainty. He had stuck to his values, but he wasn’t sure if he had done enough to pass the subject.

A He turned a deaf ear to it.

It is thought that music can make maths more enjoyable, keep students engaged and help ease fear or anxiety they have about maths.
A. Overall. B. Sensitive. C. Subjective. D. Imperfect.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. A 11. D

C. It improved their digestive ability.
D. It could keep their vocal muscles in shape.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. D

词句猜测题。根据下文““Instantly you sing, you reveal yourself,” she says. “Like, where you are, that you even exist, where your territory is—all of that immediately is out in the open for predators (捕食者), for everybody.”(她说:“你一唱歌,你就暴露了自己。”“比如,你在哪里,你甚至存在,你的领土在哪里——所有这些都立即暴露在捕食者面前,对每个人来说。”)”可知,鸟儿一唱歌就会暴露它们的位置,招来捕食者,所以鸟儿唱歌可能带来危险,由此可推知,perilous意为“危险的”。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“One of her first experiments involved taking males at the top of their game, and cutting off the connection between their brains and their singing muscles. “Already after two days, they’d lost some of their performance,” she says. “After three weeks, they were back to the same level when they were juveniles (幼鸟) and never had sung before.”(她的第一个实验是选取处于巅峰状态的雄性,切断它们大脑和歌唱肌肉之间的联系。她说:“两天之后,他们已经失去了一些表现。”“三周后,它们又回到了幼年时的水平,以前从未唱过歌。”)”可知,他们逐渐失去了唱歌的能力。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Next, she left the birds intact (完好无损的) but kept them in the dark almost around the clock for a week. The only exception was a few half hour blocks each day when Adam switched the lights on so the finches would feed and drink. Light is what stimulates the birds to sing. However, she would move around and tap the cage when the birds wanted to sing.(接下来,她让这些鸟完好无损,但把它们放在黑暗中几乎24小时一个星期。唯一的例外是每天有几个半小时的时段,亚当打开灯,让雀类进食和饮水。光是刺激鸟儿歌唱的东西。然而,当鸟儿想唱歌时,她会四处走动,轻敲笼子。)”可知,一些雄性雀在黑暗中呆了一个星期是为了阻止它们唱歌。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“But when Adam played it for a group of female birds—who’re the audience for these singing males—six out of nine preferred the song that came from a male who’d been using his singing muscles daily.(但是当亚当为一群雌鸟演奏这首歌时——这些雌鸟是这些唱歌的雄鸟的听众——9只中有6只更喜欢每天都在使用唱歌肌肉的雄鸟发出的歌。)”和文章最后一段“Adam’s conclusion is that “songbirds need to exercise their vocal muscles to produce top-performance song. If they don’t sing, they lose performance. So their vocalizations get less attractive to females—and that’s bad”. And this may help explain songbirds’ constant singing.(亚当的结论是:“鸣禽需要锻炼发声肌肉,才能唱出最好的歌曲。如果他们不唱歌,他们就会失去表演。所以它们的声音对雌性的吸引力降低了——这很糟糕。”这可能有助于解释鸣禽的持续歌唱。)”可推知,鸣禽不断歌唱的积极影响是它可以保持他们的声带肌肉的形状。故选D。

【答案】Dear Editor,
I’ve noticed some job advertisements in our area set age limits for applicants. I find it inappropriate.
By focusing on age, employers might miss out on talented individuals who don’t fit within the required age range. These age limits may also be seen as discriminatory, potentially leading to negative attitudes towards these companies. Instead, I believe job advertisements should focus on skills, qualifications, and experience.
I suggest that you discuss this issue in your newspaper. Encouraging businesses to prioritize capabilities over age can make our local job market fairer.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
A few weeks later, the exam results were announced. Sam passed his history exam with an acceptable grade! He was overjoyed and relieved. He realized that he might have got a higher score if he had cheated, but the score was his honest effort, and that made it more valuable. Emily was proud of Sam for making the right choice. She told him that honesty was much more important than any grade.
The experience of preparing for and taking the exams strengthened the bond between Sam and Emily. They learned that facing challenges together, with honesty and support for each other, was more important than the outcome of any test. From then on, Sam approached challenges with more confidence and integrity, and Emily continued to be a supportive friend. Together, they realized that the true test was not in the exams they took but in the choices they made and the kind of people they chose to be.
