【2023-2024学年安徽省天一大联考高二下学期7月期末】In February 2021, M. J. “Sunny” Eberhart started to walk. And walk, and walk. Now, the 83-year old nicknamed “Nimblewill Nomad” has become the oldest person to hike the Appalachian Trail.
He triumphantly arrived in Dalton, Massachusetts, in November, having successfully traversed(穿越)the famous 2, 193-mile route that stretches from Georgia to Maine. Eberhart broke the record previously held by fellow hiker Dale Sanders, or “Grey Beard”.
Sanders, who walked the final stretch with Eberhart, later gave him a hiking stick to mark Eberhart’s record-breaking hike. “My dear friend Nimblewill is taking my record away from me, and I’m happy for him,” Sanders said. “Records are made to be broken.”
Eberhart first set out from his home in Flagg Mountain, Alabama, nine months earlier, starting on what he called “Odyssey 2021 Bama to Baxter — Hike On”. “This will be the ultimate journey in this old man’s life, one of body, mind and spirit,” Eberhart explained on his hiking blog.
As a serious hiker, Eberhart didn’t merely drive to the Springer Mountain trailhead in northern Georgia. Instead, he walked the 400 miles from Flagg Mountain. Only then did Eberhart take up the Appalachian Trail himself, carrying a six-pound pack with a tent, a sleeping bag, and other equipment.
Conscious of his age, Eberhart traversed the trail out of order to take advantage of good weather. He slept in the wild and hiked portions of the trail with others. Every day, he thought about quitting. “I knew what was coming,” Eberhart said, remembering the pain that racked his body during the hike, especially his feet. “And day to day, the challenge.”
But he took inspiration from Lance Armstrong, who once said that pain was temporary but defeat was forever. “Eighty percent of it is mental courage,” Eberhart said. “And that is why so many people fail.”

【2023-2024学年安徽省安庆市等三市高二下学期7月期末】As Franklin D.Roosevelt once said, “a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor. ”This certainly applies to New York-born competitive sailor Cole Brauer, the first American woman to competitively sail solo (独自) around the world. Her calm personality and rich knowledge of the sport are the perfect recipe for success, as Brauer serves as a leading figure in this industry. The 29-year-old began the Global Solo Challenge departing from A Coruna, Spain, in October 2023. Finally, she made her way back to land in March 2024, aboard her boat named First Light. This competition is for sailors who desire a challenge to sail around the sea, sharpening their skills with each wave they leave behind them.
Throughout her months at sea, Brauer was not frightened by the wildly unpredictable behaviors of Mother Nature. She worked tirelessly towards achieving her incredible achievement. Along the way, the determined competitor recorded her 130-day journey at sea on Instagram. In addition to documenting her experiences, Brauer also educated her viewers on various sailing terms and the application of different sailing techniques. For example, she references the term “reefing” the sail. This means to lower your sail to accommodate increases in wind, allowing the boat to maintain a manageable speed that allows its captain to have more controlled steering (驾驶) .
As a former student of the University of Hawaii, Brauer achieved many academic and athletic achievements. From earning the 2017 Jack Bonham Award for academic and athletic performance to being a part of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Academic All-American Team twice, she continued to raise the bar. And with this latest challenge, Brauer had opportunities to improve her skills in the unique backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.
As she sailed from Spain to South Africa and Australia, Brauer finally crossed the Atlantic Ocean back to her starting point — A Coruna. Her dedicated spirit, enthusiasm for life, and desire to inspire young women to pursue their dreams shone through her expedition.

【2023-2024学年安徽省滁州市高二下学期7月期末】Like almost all new parents, Bryan and Elizabeth Shaw started snapping pictures of their son, Noah, from the moment he was born.
When he was about three months old, Elizabeth noticed something odd when taking his picture. The flash on their camera created the typical red dot in the center of Noah’s left eye, but the right eye had a white spot at the center, almost as if the flash were being reflected back at the camera by something. When Elizabeth mentioned it to their doctor, she shined a light into Noah’s eye, and saw the same white reflection. She realized there was something wrong and arranged for a complete examination for Noah right away. As the result showed, a white reflection is a telltale sign of retinal cancer and that was exactly what Noah had. He endured months of painful treatments, but doctors ultimately could not save his eye.
However, Noah’s condition was treatable if caught early. Bryan Shaw couldn’t help but wonder whether there were signs he’d missed. He went back over every picture of Noah and discovered the first white spot in a photo taken when Noah was 12 days old. As time went on, it appeared more frequently. Bryan, a chemistry professor found by the time Noah was four months old, it appeared in approximately 25 percent of the pictures taken of him.
It was too late for Noah’s eye, but Bryan was bent on putting his hard-won insights to good use. He created a database that charted the cancer’s appearance in every photo. He also collected photos and data from eight other children with the same condition. Armed with the data, he began to work with colleagues to develop an app that can scan the photos in the user’s camera roll to search for white eye and can be used as a kind of ophthalmoscope (检眼镜): White Eye Detector, and it is now available for free on Google Play and in Apple’s App Store.
“I just kept telling myself, I really need to do this.” Bryan told the interviewer. “This disease is tough to detect. Not only can this software save vision, but it can save lives.”
24.What did Elizabeth find when taking pictures of Noah?
A.A white spot appeared in Noah’s right eye. B.Noah’s left eye was unusually red.
C.Her son developed retinal cancer. D.Her camera failed to function.
25.How did the doctor react after hearing Elizabeth’s description?
A.She claimed everything was fine with Noah’s eye.
B.She realized she could do nothing to save Noah’s eye.
C.She ignored her doubt based on previous experience.
D.She had Noah thoroughly examined almost without delay.
26.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.The first picture of Noah was taken 12 days after his birth.
B.Noah’s condition was by no means incurable with early detection.
C.The white spot appeared in a quarter of the pictures taken of Noah.
D.Bryan looked through the photos to find a cure for Noah’s disease.
27.Which of the following best describes Bryan’s creation?
A.Easily-earned. B.Well-received.

【2023-2024学年安徽省阜阳第一中学高二下学期5月调研】Bright and early on the morning of our first full day in Antarctica, L’ Austral’s Captain Fabien’s voice woke us up as it came through a loudspeaker. If we looked outside right now, he said, we’d see a beautiful sea of icebergs in the golden sunlight. My sister and I jumped out of bed, staring in amazement as we sailed past giant pieces of ice. In the distance, we spotted a group of humpback whales feeding on smaller fishes. Next door, my parents were also waking up to the sights of a new day in Antarctica. Over breakfast, my sister and I excitedly told them about the whales we saw from our room that morning.
You might not immediately think of “family vacation” when talking about a trip to Antarctica, but tour companies like Adventures by Disney are changing that. The company offers guided group trips to destinations across all seven continents in the world.
Our adventure started when we flew to Buenos Aires and explored the beautiful Argentine capital for a day. After leaving Buenos Aires, we flew to Ushuaia on an Adventures by Disney plane. Then, it was the journey toward the Drake Passage. After a speedy Drake Passage crossing, we reached Antarctica early, adding a half day to our scheduled four days on and around the continent.
To those unfamiliar with Adventures by Disney, the fact that you can experience Antarctica — the most distant, extreme continent — with Disney might be surprising. During the trip, there were thoughtful acts, from stamped postcards to send from an Antarctica post office to a champagne (香槟) party on our final stop of the journey; Adventures by Disney truly thought of everything for us. Antarctica is a life-changing destination packed with experiences that can’t be copied. We experienced seasickness when travelling across the Drake Passage, hiked up ice hills alongside lovely animals, and had a taste of champagne. And honestly, it’s going to be hard for the next family trip we may take to compete.

【2023-2024学年安徽省黄山市高二下学期7月期末】 Zlotkowski, a high school girl who lives on Isleboro Island, off Maine’s midcoast, spent her summer helping her mom Kimberly sell seafood at their local farmers’ market. It was there that they met another vendor (小贩) selling homemade goat cheese. A quick taste and the family fell in love with it.
“Mom. let’s get some goats so we can have cheese,” said Zlotkowski. Understandably, her mom wasn’t sold on the idea, but it happened that Kimberly was looking to clear some land. Zlotkowski saw her opening.
“Goats eat a lot of plants that other livestock (牲畜) won’t touch. They’re also able to access brushy areas that are inaccessible to some larger equipment, and they naturally fertilize (施肥) while they work,” Zlotkowski explained to her mother. She jumped at the chance and hopped on the next flight from her home in San Francisco to Los Angeles. While Niu was anxious about her first real opportunity and took the court with butterflies in her stomach, she was stunned to finish her routine to a standing ovation. 【2023-2024学年安徽省芜湖市高二下学期期末】Around the world, traditional crafts are falling victim to technology and globalization. In Hong Kong, Miru Wong Ka-lam is doing her bit to keep the art of Yue embroidery (粤绣) alive. Wong’s hand-embroidered shoe shop, Sindart, is one of a few in the city to have survived the industry. To share her skills, the third-generation owner of the 65-year-old small business holds weekly workshops for those eager to learn the dying art of embroidery.
When family members gather for dinner during the Mid-Autumn Festival, they exchange gifts. Handmade slippers (拖鞋) used to be a popular item to give to elderly members of the family. Unfortunately, the practice is now less common. “When my grandparents started the shop in the 1950s, there were a lot more orders for handmade slippers. Now, it seems that people are more focused on buying mooncakes,” Wong says.
Cheaper, machine-embroidered slippers are another threat (威胁) to the traditional craft’s survival. Wong, however, believes that handmade slippers have better quality compared with machine-made ones. “Machine-made slippers feel different from handmade ones,” she says. “The material is too soft, making the slippers uncomfortable.”
One element (元素) that makes Sindart’s slippers unique is the wide range of designs. “My late grandfather, who founded Sindart in 1958 in a tiny shop, created his own embroidery designs in the1950s,” Wong says.
Wong has made up her mind to give new life to the art of Yue embroidery by adding modern elements and making footwear that is suitable for everyday use. “This includes applying hand embroidery to not only slippers, which is the tradition, but also to other types of shoes. Now I’m studying shoemaking techniques in a shoe factory so that I can achieve this,” she says.
4.What is Wong’s purpose in holding weekly workshops?
A.To enlarge her business.
B.To practice her embroidery skills.
C.To promote the art of embroidery.
D.To increase her influence in the industry.
5.Why have handmade slippers become less popular during the Mid-Autumn Festival?
A.People think they’re out of date.
B.Old people do not want to wear them.
C.They’re not as good as they used to be.
D.People prefer to buy mooncakes instead.
6.Why are machine-made slippers considered a threat to handmade slippers?
A.They are of higher quality. B.They are more comfortable.
C.They are more affordable. D.They are made of softer material.
7.What will Wong do in the future?
A.Open more shoe factories. B.Expand her product range.
C.Apply hand embroidery to clothes. D.Build partnerships with local shoe factories.

【2023-2024学年安徽省阜阳市高二下学期7月期末】Teachers always do their best within the classroom, but actual learning happens outside those four walls during excursions, says Sherielyn Choi, an English teacher at the all-girls secondary school, Canossa College, in Hong Kong.
“Excursions offer valuable hands-on learning opportunities and help students consolidate (巩固) what they learn at a theoretical level in class,” Choi says. “Additionally, every time our students return from their excursions, I observe that they improve socially and emotionally, with better communication and cooperation skills.”
She speaks from fresh experience since her students recently took part in the educational tour, “Macau Unlocked: A Journey of Discovery for Students 2023-2024”, jointly organised by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and South China Morning Post.
The day trip has been specially designed for young people to help them learn about Macao’s rich history, vibrant (充满活力的) culture and sustainable practices.
Jayde e Lai, a Year 11 student at Canossa College, says, “I’d never been to Macao before the tour, so as a newcomer, I felt that the tour did a good job of compacting (压缩) Macao’s 400-year history into a day’s event. I definitely learned a lot of fun facts, history and culture of Macao.”
The tour was led by experienced MGTO tour guides, who are knowledgeable about Macao’s history and culture. Students taking part in the tour went to many historic sites that are not often visited, including the Old City Walls, Natacha Temple, the Ruins of St. Paul’s, Macao Museum and Mount Fortress.
Lai says she was most fascinated to learn about some of Macao’s sustainable practices. “Besides the exhibits in the Macao Tea Culture House, we also learned how tea leaf residues (残渣) are recycled to produce items such as cups and even furniture,” she says. “We were asked to smell these products, and they really do smell like tea!”
