Would you be able to sleep with one eye open? Bottlenose dolphins(宽吻海豚) can. When they sleep, only half of their brain goes to sleep. They sleep with one eye open to stay safe. Half of their brain sleeps for about two hours before the other half of their brain gets a chance to sleep. Sometimes, the dolphins will keep swimming while they are sleeping.
8
Dolphins are not fish—they are mammals(哺乳动物). These mammals have lungs(肺). And they don’t have gills(腮) like fish. They are also warm-blooded and have to go to the surface of the water to get air into their lungs. Dolphins don’t lay eggs. Their young are born alive, and they drink milk from their mothers. Dolphins are one of the smartest animals in the world. There are many stories about how they save people out of water. They are able to solve many problems like humans. They can even use tools to catch fish. But their cleverness doesn’t end there.
9
Dolphins can also pass on anything they learn to other dolphins, like interesting fishing skills. They communicate with each other in many ways. They use different sounds to talk to each other. Dolphins know the “voices” of other dolphins and even know exactly who is making which sound. Another thing that shows their cleverness is that they can also know themselves in a mirror(镜子) and check different parts of their body in it.
10
1. Why do bottlenose dolphins sleep with one eye open?
A. To stay safe.
B. To sleep for two hours.
C. To swim faster.
2. What can we learn about dolphins from Paragraph 2?
A. They use gills to get air.
B. They are warm-blooded.
C. They lay eggs like fish.
√
√
11
3. How do dolphins talk to each other?
A. By learning fishing skills.
B. By using different sounds.
C. By checking their bodies.
4. Which part of a magazine may the passage be taken from?

Headphones are helpful. Many kids use them. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume(音量) is too loud. Studies show that one out of every ten kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud noise.
Do you know how we hear? There are cells(细胞) inside the ears that help us hear. We can’t see them with our eyes. “We call them hair cells,”
13
Jackie Clark said. “They look like hairs standing up.” Clark is a scientist at the University of Texas. She studies noises and ears. Sound cannot be seen, but it can make the hair cells move back and forward. Think of the wind in the leaves.
Loud noises can damage(损伤) these cells. And once the cells are damaged, they don’t grow back. Sometimes there’s tinnitus. “It’s like someone is playing a note on the flute(长笛) for a long time,” Clark says. It shows we’re losing hearing. Tinnitus is not only harmful to our ears; also it can make us feel uneasy. That’s why it’s necessary to protect our ears.
14
How can we protect our ears? We’d better keep the volume low when we use our headphones. We should be able to hear sounds around us. And other people shouldn’t hear noise from our headphones. “If I can hear what you’re listening to when you’re wearing your headphones,” Clark says, “it’s too loud.” To protect our ears, keep our headphones at about half volume.
15
1. What can we know about hair cells?
A. They help us hear.
B. They look like hairs lying down.
C. They can be seen clearly with our eyes.
2. What does the underlined word “tinnitus” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. A musical voice.
B. A kind of instrument.
C. Ringing in ears.
√
√
16
3. What’s the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To give advice. B. To show problems.
C. To explain reasons.
4. What’s the main idea of the passage?

What should you do when you can’t find the time to do a long workout? Have you heard of exercise snacks(零食式锻炼)?
Exercise snacks are a popular and inventive new way for people to stay fit. Instead of spending hours on the playground, people break that “large meal” into exercise “snacks”. These exercises can last anywhere from 20 seconds to two minutes. Then you can have a rest for 30 minutes to four hours before another snack.
18
It is reported that exercise snacks can be as useful as traditional exercise methods. Just three exercise snacks a day can benefit(使受益) your physical health. Besides that, there are lots of other benefits. Your concentration(专注力) and creativity get better, and you can become more productive. Also, “snacking” throughout the day stops you from sitting too long.
There are so many acceptable exercise snacks, like doing sit-ups, jumping rope or running up and down some stairs(楼梯). But for those who don’t know where to start, here are some helpful exercise choices:
19
Exercises such as lifting weights will satisfy the needs. Since most people don’t keep weights at their offices, lift full water bottles.
Squats(深蹲)—moving your body as if to sit down while keeping your back straight. Five to ten of these should make a good snack.
For those who don’t like traditional exercises, simply turn up the music. Pick a lively song and start dancing. It’ll make for a fun workout.
What are you waiting for? Let’s get moving. Your body will thank you for it!

人与社会——身份认同与文化自信社会热点:“龙”新的英语翻译
What year were you born in? Are you a dragon? That is to say, were you born in the Year of the Dragon?
As we know, the Year of the Dragon has arrived with us for a while, and everyone is excited about talking about dragons. Many of them have noticed that more and more people are using the word “loong” instead of “dragon” in their daily life. Actually, the loongs in Chinese culture, believe it or not, are far different from the dragons in Western culture.
23
First, let’s talk about their origins(起源). Loongs are connected to stars and rain. They are believed to have to do with the power of emperors in the past. Dragons, however, are related to floods and dangerous waters underground.
Second, let’s dig into their stories. Loongs are like messengers between the sky and the earth. They help out the rulers, who become kings because of them. Dragons, though, are troublemakers. They fight with the rulers and can even beat them! But as time passes, dragons lose their shine and heroes start killing them.
24
Third, let’s look at what they mean. Since loongs represent(代表) power, they are seen as a symbol of the emperor and an important part of ceremonies and traditions. Dragons, though, are bad news. They are a symbol of evil(恶), and beating the dragons is seen as a victory over evil.
Lastly, let’s check out how they look. Loongs are like a mix of animals, with heads like camels and necks like snakes. They don’t need wings to fly because they are already skilled at it. Dragons are more like snakes, living underground and causing problems. They don’t have wings either, but people add those to make them look more impressive.
25
1. Why does the writer start the passage by asking questions?
A. To make a report. B. To do a survey.
C. To catch readers’ interests.
2. What are loongs connected with according to the passage?
A. Stars and the moon.
B. The power of emperors.
C. Dangerous waters underground.
3. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Rulers. B. Heroes. C. Loongs.
√
√
√
26
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Loongs have wings.
B. Loongs are used in ceremonies.
C. Dragons’ heads are like camels.
5. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The origins of dragons and loongs.
B. The meanings of dragons and loongs.
C. The differences between dragons and loongs.

Have you ever looked at a cat’s face and
wondered what it is thinking? Well, according to a
new study, cats have many different facial expressions,
which show how they are feeling.
28
The research was carried out by the scientists at the University of California, in the US. They visited a local cat café over several months to record videos of 53 cats, collecting 194 minutes of videos. They found that the cats have 276 different expressions. “Each expression was a mixture of different facial movements, which included licking(舔) their nose, opening their mouth, or widening the pupils of their eyes,” said the scientists. They also found cats use 26 of these facial movements in total, which can be mixed to express how they are feeling. Dogs use 27 facial movements and humans use a total of 44.
29
Out of the expressions they recorded, 45% were friendly and 37% were angry. “A friendly cat moves its ears and whiskers forward and closes its eyes. However, an angry cat often flattens its ears to its head, makes its pupils smaller and licks its lips,” said the team.
Although the researchers aren’t sure what the cats were trying to communicate with each other using their faces, they plan to study cats in other places to improve their understanding. They also hope that the research could help animal shelters(收容所) improve the way they look after the cats. Some pet owners even suggest the researchers develop an app for them to find out what their cats’ facial expressions really mean.
