Years earlier, I’d been a trainee in a lab, which stuck to a traditional format. The lab head would spend much time asking the presenter a series of pointed questions. Presenters would need to know extremely small details about articles they were citing and present their research using picture-perfect analyses and graphs. So the presentation was an untoward thing to almost anyone.
When I started my own lab, I decided to change the routine by being friendly and welcoming while asking my trainees challenging questions about their science. But for 6 years, I felt I hadn’t created the lab environment I wanted.
The turning point came during the pandemic. It hit home to me that one’s life isn’t endless and that I need to make the most of the time I have. I decided that I wanted to become a better professor—to make a mark by training the next generation of scientists.
In my personal life, I had benefited from listening to talks by motivational speakers. So I decided to start there. At the next lab meeting, I showed my students a video about happiness, hoping it would help them in their personal life and give us something light to discuss. I wasn’t sure how they’d respond, hut I was pleased to discover that they were interested in discussing the advice in the video afterward. In the end, I asked them whether they’d like to do similar activities in future meetings, and they said yes.
From then on, I began every lab meeting with a 20-minute team building session. My lab members and I do many activities—including analyzing and appreciating poetry. These sessions have eased tensions and opened minds, helping foster more participation later in the meeting.
So far, I have been hopeful about the lab environment we’re creating. My greatest wish is to see my trainees become their best selves, understand who they are and what they want as well as reach their career goals. I am proud of the change and the difference I’ve made.
4. What does the underlined word “untoward” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Harmonious. B. Embarrassing. C. Stressful. D. Appealing.
5. How did the pandemic affect the author?
A. He no longer wasted his time. B. He decided to become a professor.
C. He realized the benefit of inspiring talks. D. He wanted to make more contributions.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The change the author made. B. A video the students liked.
C. The benefit the author got from others. D. A proposal the students put forward.
7. What message does the author mainly want to deliver?
A. Team building sessions can bring unexpected benefits.
B. One should have the courage to make a change.
C. Professors are responsible for teamwork.
D Motivational talks are the origin of inspiration.
C 5. D 6. A 7. B

根据第一段“The lab head would spend much time asking the presenter a series of pointed questions. Presenters would need to know extremely small details about articles they were citing and present their research using picture-perfect analyses and graphs.”
根据第三段“The turning point came during the pandemic. It hit home to me that one’s life isn’t endless and that I need to make the most of the time I have. I decided that I wanted to become a better professor—to make a mark by training the next generation of scientists.(转折点出现在大流行期间。我明白了人的生命不是无止境的,我需要充分利用我所拥有的时间。我决定要成为一名更好的教授——通过培养下一代科学家而出名)”可知,大流行让作者想做出更多的贡献。故选D。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“In my personal life, I had benefited from listening to talks by motivational speakers. So I decided to start there. At the next lab meeting, I showed my students a video about happiness, hoping it would help them in their personal life and give us something light to discuss. I wasn’t sure how they’d respond, hut I was pleased to discover that they were interested in discussing the advice in the video afterward. In the end, I asked them whether they’d like to do similar activities in future meetings, and they said yes.(在我的个人生活中,我从听励志演说家的演讲中获益良多。所以我决定从这里开始。在接下来的实验室会议上,我给学生们看了一个关于幸福的视频,希望它能帮助他们的个人生活,并给我们一些轻松的讨论。我不确定他们会有什么反应,但我很高兴地发现他们对讨论视频中的建议很感兴趣。最后,我问他们是否愿意在以后的会议上做类似的活动,他们说愿意)”可知,第四段的主要内容是作者所做的改变。故选A。
根据最后一段“My greatest wish is to see my trainees become their best selves, understand who they are and what they want as well as reach their career goals. I am proud of the change and the difference I’ve made.(我最大的愿望是看到我的学员成为最好的自己,了解他们是谁,他们想要什么,并实现他们的职业目标。我为自己带来的改变感到骄傲)”结合文章主要讲述了作者在疫情期间决定做出更多的贡献,决定要成为一名更好的教授——通过培养下一代科学家而出名。作者的改变最终带来的良好的效果。可推知,作者主要想传达的是:一个人应该有勇气做出改变。故选B。

While AI can beat us at chess, driving cars, and even composing music, making us laugh seems to be its final boundary.
My musical comedy, Artificially Intelligent, was inspired by the time I asked AI to write me a show based on my life, and it gave me some madly terrible results. I performed some of its materials in the show, and I even made AI write a song for an audience member live on the spot, and it was always funny in its terribleness. It generated songs telling the audience member who is a doctor to hit the eyes of her co-worker who she is always arguing with. However, this wasn’t independent thinking; we had to feed AI as much information as possible to get any results from it. When it comes to actually getting AI to craft jokes on its own, it can’t.
The problem with AI and comedy is its lack of human nuance (细微差别) for humor. AI might be able to create a joke structure but it does not have the ability to pull from personal experience. It lacks a point of view, situational awareness, context, and cultural awareness needed for good comedy. Irony (讽刺), a complex form of human communication, is hard for AI because of its reliance on context, tone, and cultural knowledge. Unlike humans, AI can’t infer meaning beyond clear statements. Irony involves saying one thing but meaning another, relying on shared context, but AI only processes text and can’t pick up audio and visual cues for irony. AI must signal it’s making a joke.
As of now, though AI has made impressive progress in some areas, it is absolutely not funny, but in the future theoretically yes. When technology advances to the point where robots are walking around with free will and independent thinking, experiencing life and potentially even emotions, they would theoretically begin to have enough viewpoints to create comedy, or an activity that voices their experience of being an AI. However, this would create its own culture and would only be relatable to other AIs.
The truth is that audience is really enjoying the AI-generated material in my show, even if the joke is bad. But — technically — does that make it funny?
8. How does the author illustrate AI’s limitation in making jokes in Paragraph 2?
A. By providing data. B. By giving an example.
C. By showing a survey result. D. By making a comparison.
9. What does the author try to explain in Paragraph 3?
A. What AI jokes are made up of. B. How AI understands the meaning of irony.
C. Why AI fails to create a good joke actually. D. Whether AI can learn from funny experiences.
10. What does the author think of AI in the future?
A. It will relate its culture to humans. B. It will teach itself the theory of comedy.
C. It will be free to express others’ feelings. D. It will develop its own culture of humor.
11. Which can be a suitable title for this passage?
A. Will AI ever be funny? B. Is AI going to learn to laugh?
C. Is AI the future of entertainment? D. Will AI be the pioneer in new fields?
B 9. C 10. D 11. A

根据第二段“My musical comedy, Artificially Intelligent, was inspired by the time I asked AI to write me a show based on my life, and it gave me some madly terrible results.(我的音乐喜剧《人工智能》的灵感来自于我让人工智能根据我的生活为我写一个节目,它给了我一些非常糟糕的结果)”以及“When it comes to actually getting AI to craft jokes on its own, it can’t.(当涉及到让AI自己制作笑话时,它无法做到)”可知,作者在第二段通过举例来说明人工智能在创作笑话方面的局限性。
根据第三段“The problem with AI and comedy is its lack of human nuance (细微差别) for humor.(AI和喜剧的问题在于其缺乏人类对幽默的细微差别)”以及“Irony involves saying one thing but meaning another, relying on shared context, but AI only processes text and can’t pick up audio and visual cues for irony. AI must signal it’s making a joke.(讽刺意味着说的是一件事,意思是另一件事,依赖于共享的上下文,但人工智能只处理文本,无法获取讽刺的音频和视觉线索。人工智能必须发出开玩笑的信号)”可知,本段主要解释了为什么AI实际上无法创造出好的笑话。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“When technology advances to the point where robots are walking around with free will and independent thinking, experiencing life and potentially even emotions, they would theoretically begin to have enough viewpoints to create comedy, or an activity that voices their experience of being an AI. However, this would create its own culture and would only be relatable to other AIs.(当技术进步到机器人可以自由行走、独立思考、体验生活甚至可能有情感的程度时,理论上它们就会开始有足够的观点来创作喜剧,或者通过一种活动来表达它们作为人工智能的体验。然而,这将创造自己的文化,并且只与其他AI相关)”可推知,作者认为未来的AI将会发展自身的幽默文化。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“While AI can beat us at chess, driving cars, and even composing music, making us laugh seems to be its final boundary.(虽然人工智能可以在国际象棋、驾驶汽车甚至作曲方面击败我们,但让我们发笑似乎是它的最终界限)”结合文章介绍了人工智能(AI)在制作幽默内容方面所面临的挑战,尤其是其在理解讽刺、细微差别和文化背景等方面的局限性以及未来的可能性。 故选A。

Under the background of the slow growth of its total population to 1.44 billion China has seen a sharp rise in older adults over the past decade, solidifying the country’s rapidly aging pattern, the latest national census (人口普查) data shows. The population on the Chinese mainland increased by an average of 0.53 percent annually during the past 10 years to 1.41 billion, compared with an annual growth rate of 0.57 percent from 2000 to 2010, according to the 7th national census published by the National Bureau of Statistics.
“The growth of the total population has slowed down but remains at a steady pace,” Ning Jizhe, head of the bureau, said at a news conference. “Based on trends in recent years, China’s population will grow at an increasingly slow rate in the future while remaining above 1.4 billion.” The increasing elderly population has become a defining feature of the past decade.
Ning said an aging society will set the tone for China's population structure for a long time, presenting challenges and opportunities. “A graying population will pile pressure on supply of labor force and social services, as well as adding to families’ elderly care burden. But more elderly people could also motivate consumption of products and services targeting this age group, and advance the development of some technologies,” he said.
Ning added that those between the ages of 60 and 69, who are equipped with knowledge, experience and skills and are generally in good health, make up nearly 56 percent of all older adults. “Their potential to continue making contributions to society and playing a constructive role is big,” he responded to a question on the outlook for raising the retirement age and carrying out other potential measures aimed at addressing the aging trend. Some population economists also said the latest number and proportion (比例) of elderly are largely within predictions, and the aging trend will continue for a long time.
12. What does the 7th national census data show?
A. The aging population of China has risen rapidly.
B. The annual growth rate has increased by 0.04%.
C. The annual growth rate was 0.57% during the past 10 years.
D The total population of Chinese mainland increased to 1.44 billion.
13. What does Ning Jizhe say about the growth of graying population?
A. It is beyond predictions. B. It brings few advantages.
C. It has sharply slowed down. D. It will increase pressure on family.
14. What is Ning Jizhe’s attitude to the graying population?
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Negative.
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. The aging trend brings problems
B. An aging society presents opportunities
C. China’s population gets old as growth slows
D. Measures are to be taken to tackle the aging trend
A 13. D 14. A 15. C

Although many people still like to have three main meals a day, others are choosing a lighter way of eating rather than rich meals. ____16____. The important thing is to make sure you choose healthy foods.
____17____
The demands of modern life mean that we don’t always have the opportunity to sit down and eat three meals a day. For some people, the pressures of combining work and family leave little time for food preparation. Others regularly eat on their own and don’t want to bother cooking a full meal.
Focus on nutrients
There is no “right” way of eating, as long as you take in all the nutrients your body requires. ____18____. Boredom or stress can drive us to the fridge, or corner shop. If you make sure all your snacks are nutritious ones, as well as lower in fat and sugar, you are less likely to eat beyond your body’s needs.
Choose healthy snacks
Starchy carbohydrates (淀粉类碳水化合物) have a lot to offer nutritionally and make excellent choices as the basis both for snacks and for lunch. ____19____. Fresh fruits or vegetables are both excellent choices for a light snack. Although not as filling as starchy carbohydrate foods, some of them are high in disease-fighting vitamins.
Making time for lunch
____20____, most of us try to make time for lunch, even if it is just a “light bite” — a sandwich in the office, or a simple hot dish in the canteen, Lunch is an essential pause in the middle of the day, a chance to relax and recharge our batteries a little.
A. As we are familiar with our habits
B. Either option is equally acceptable
C. Eat in a way that suits your lifestyle
D. We don’t just eat because we’re hungry

F. No matter what our eating pattern is for the rest of the day
G. They are filling and help you stay filled with energy for a while
B 17. C 18. D 19. G 20. F
根据上文“Although many people still like to have three main meals a day, others are choosing a lighter way of eating rather than substantial meals. (尽管许多人仍然喜欢一日三餐,但也有人选择了清淡的饮食方式,而不是丰盛的一餐。)” 及下文“The important thing is to make sure you choose healthy foods. (重要的是要确保你选择健康的食物。)” 可知,作者在划线处上文先提出两种不同的饮食方式,下文给出的建议是“确保你选择健康的食物”可知,划线处并未否定任何一种饮食方式,即两种方式都有可行实处,只要健康即可。选项B.“Either option is equally acceptable (两种选择都是可以接受的)”符合语境。故选B。
【17题详解】
根据第二段“For some people, the pressures of combining work and family leave little time for food preparation. Others regularly eat on their own and don’t want to bother cooking a full meal. (对一些人来说,兼顾工作和家庭的压力使他们几乎没有时间准备食物。还有一些人经常自己吃饭,不想做一顿丰盛的饭。)”可知,此处描述不同人群选择不通过的就餐模式,因此本段给出的建议为:根据自己的生活模式选择适合的饮食方式。选项C. “Eat in a way that suits your lifestyle (选择适合自己生活方式的饮食方式)”符合语境。故选C。
根据下文“Boredom or stress can drive us to the fridge, or corner shop. (无聊或压力会把我们逼到冰箱或街角小店)”可知,我们会在感到无聊或压力时选择吃东西,即我们有时吃东西并非饥饿。选项D.“We don’t just eat because we’re hungry (我们不只是因为饿才吃东西)”符合语境。故选D。
根据上文“Starchy carbohydrates(淀粉类碳水化合物)have a lot to offer nutritionally and make excellent choices as the basis both for snacks and for lunch. (淀粉类碳水化合物有很多营养价值,是零食和午餐的绝佳选择)”可知,此处主要介绍选择淀粉类碳水化合物的饮食建议。因此划线处会具体说明这类饮食的优点。选项G.“They are filling and help you stay filled with energy for a while (它们会让你感到充实,并帮助你在一段时间内保持精力充沛)”符合语境。故选G。
根据下文“Lunch is an essential pause in the middle of the day, a chance to relax and recharge our batteries a little. (午餐是一天中必不可少的休息,是一个放松和充电的机会。)”可知,此处给出的饮食建议是一定要吃午餐。因此划线处提出“不管其他时间的饮食习惯或是安排是什么,午餐是必要的”,选项F.“No matter what our eating pattern is for the rest of the day (不管一天中剩下的时间我们的饮食习惯如何)”符合语境。故选F。

The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake? Was he still upset with me? “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m just missing my computer camp. Computers are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing.” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent(有能力的)computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us? We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts(零件)for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,” Grandma asked. No internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Maybe I could be someone who was really competent.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I could be someone who was really competent. “I can definitely help with that! Where are the parts?” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. Rolling up my sleeves, I carefully connected everything. It was a piece of cake to me. “Done!” I announced confidently. After a few adjustments, the internet was up and running. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Before long, notifications started showing up — people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!(96词)
Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in. “This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered with joy as she began bustling about, packing flowers. Mr. Jackson chuckled warmly as he handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric — everyone was on their feet, moving quickly to keep up with the growing orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. To our surprise, the roses sold out in just half a day. “You’ve brought the farm into the twenty-first century, Jude,” Grandma hugged me tightly. I realized that being competent wasn’t about avoiding mistakes. It was about facing them head-on and making the most of my strengths.(100词)

A He no longer wasted his time.
D. Motivational talks are the origin of inspiration.
C
AI might be able to create a joke structure, but it does not have the ability to pull from personal experience.

D. The total population of Chinese mainland increased to 1.44 billion.
13. What does Ning Jizhe say about the growth of graying population?
A. It is beyond predictions. B. It brings few advantages.
C. It has sharply slowed down. D. It will increase pressure on family.
14. What is Ning Jizhe’s attitude to the graying population?
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Negative.
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. The aging trend brings problems
B. An aging society presents opportunities
C. China’s population gets old as growth slows
D. Measures are to be taken to tackle the aging trend

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Maybe I could be someone who was really competent.
