In ancient China, willow branches were often used as a parting gift between friends and family members. Do you know why they are a symbol of farewell (告别)?
One reason is that willow trees are strong. They can keep alive in soil, wet or dry, north or south.
Because of this unique feature, giving a willow branch is a way to say goodbye to loved ones. And it tells them you hope they will easily adapt to their new living environment.
Meanwhile, in Mandarin (普通话), the pronunciation of “liu” for “willow” is similar to the Chinese character “留”, which means asking someone to stay—only the tones (声调) are different. So, offering a willow branch is like asking the other one to stay, even though we know that he or she must leave.
It’s said that this custom became popular during the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD). At that time the Ba Bridge in Chang’an, today’s Xi’an, was a common place to say goodbye. People often stopped there and gave willow branches to the people who would leave.
Willow branches are often mentioned in poems. In The Book of Songs (《诗经》), there is the line “When I left there, willows shed tears.” During the Tang and Song dynasties, such poems were common as travelling was easy and poets often felt the pain of separation (离别) . For example, Wang Wei wrote “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green,” in his famous poem A Farewell Song (《送元二使安西》).
5. Which branches are a symbol of farewell?
A. B. C. D.
6. From the text, we know that _______.
A. it was not difficult for people to take a trip in the Tang and Song dynasties
B. willow trees can keep alive in different kinds of soil except wet places
C. in the Han Dynasty, people went to the Ba Bridge to write poems to their friends
D. as a symbol of farewell, willow branches first appeared in poems in the Tang Dynasty
7. How might Wang Wei feel when he wrote the poem A Farewell Song?
A. Surprised. B. Excited. C. Sad. D. Worried.

A. A kind of strong tree—willow trees.

Bees are small insects, but they play a huge role in our world. In the past years, scientists have discovered more about how important bees are to the environment. Bees are best known for making honey (蜂蜜), but their most important job is pollinating (授粉) plants. This helps plants produce fruits and seeds. Without bees, many of the fruits and vegetables we eat would not grow.
There are over 20,000 kinds of bees in the world. The most common type is the honeybee.
Honeybees live in groups called colonies. Each colony has one queen, thousands of worker bees, and a few hundred drones. The queen’s job is to lay eggs, while the worker bees collect food, build the hive and take care of the young bees. Drones are male bees, and their main role is to mate with the queen.
Bees are also amazing communicators. When a worker bee finds a patch of flowers full of nectar (花蜜), it returns to the hive and performs a special dance called the “waggle dance”. This dance tells other bees the direction and distance of the flowers. For example, if the bee waggles straight up, it means the flowers are in the direction of the sun. This clever form of communication helps. the colony work together efficiently (高效率地).
Unfortunately, bees are facing many challenges today. Climate change, pesticides (杀虫剂), and the loss of natural habitats are causing bee populations to decline (减少). This is a big problem because bees are needed for growing food. To help protect bees, many farmers and gardeners are now planting more flowers and reducing the use of harmful chemicals. Some people are even building “bee hotels” to provide safe places for wild bees to live in. By learning more about bees and taking steps to protect them, we can make sure that we’ll have a healthier planet.

“Mum!” she shouted. “I see birds. Two. In a cave (洞穴). Beautiful!”
Mum smiled. Birds! Always birds! From the moment Amy woke up in the morning to the moment she closed her eyes at night, she thought only of birds.
Amy climbed straight to her attic room, which she called a museum. Every shelf, every spare inch of floor, was covered with nests, bird models and natural science books, The walls were covered with pencil and crayon drawings of many different kinds of birds, all signed “Amy in the woods”
“Are those the same birds that built the nest last year? Will they return to the cave next spring?” Amy always wondered. “I will study my cave birds. I will draw them just as they are,” Amy made up her mind.
A week later, the birds were used to her. They were busy building their nest as Amy watched and drew with her pencils. Soon the dried brown nest became a soft green bed.
Amy watched as two baby birds came out. She watched as the young birds flew for the first time. She began to feel a part of this small family.
When the days grew shorter and the autumn air began to bite, Amy knew the birds would leave soon. But would they come back? She had to know!
In bed that night, she formed a plan.
The next day, when the mother and father birds were away from the nest, she tied something to one leg of each baby bird. A week later, the birds were gone…
The days grew longer again. One morning, Amy heard a bird call, “Fee-bee!Fee-bee!”
She ran to the cave. Watching the way the birds flew in and out of the cave, Amy knew her friends had come back. But where were last year’s babies? Did they return too? She began to search the woods near the cave, listening for their call.
Inside a little house, she found two birds building a nest. One wore a silver ring around its leg. Up the small river, under a bridge, she found two more nesting birds. And one wore a silver ring around its leg.
Amy smiled and called, “Fee-bee! Fee-bee!”

C. in the Han Dynasty, people went to the Ba Bridge to write poems to their friends
D. as a symbol of farewell, willow branches first appeared in poems in the Tang Dynasty
7. How might Wang Wei feel when he wrote the poem A Farewell Song?
A. Surprised. B. Excited. C. Sad. D. Worried.
8. What’s the text mainly about?
A. A kind of strong tree—willow trees.
B. A common place to say goodbye—the Ba Bridge.
C. A symbol of saying goodbye—willow branches.
D. A famous poem—The Book of Songs.

9. The central role of bees in the environment is ________
A. making honey B. spreading seeds C. pollinating plants D. protecting flowers
10. Match the different roles of bees in a colony with their jobs.
①The queen ②The worker bees ③The drone
a. Collecting food, building the hive, and taking care of the young bees.

c Laying eggs.
A. ①—c;②—b;③—a B. ①—c;②—a;③—b
C. ①—a;②—b;③—c D. ①—b;②—c;③—a
11. What is the purpose of the “waggle dance” performed by a worker bee?
A. To tell other bees where the flowers are. B. To show the queen that they have found food.
C. To communicate with the drones. D. To build the hive.
12. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Honeybee Colonies and Their Life Cycle B. Building Safe Habitats to Protect Bees
C. Tiny Bees, Giant Environmental Role D. How Bees Communicate Through Dance D
