Recently, my daughter reminded me of someone we saw at the train station a few years ago.
That day, my daughter and I were waiting for our train. We went to buy some drinks, and then we saw the old man. Dressed poorly, he was standing in front of the counter (柜台) while counting coins slowly to buy just one bottle of water. The businessman behind him said impatiently, “Hey! Can’t you be quick? Some of us have a train to catch!” Hearing this, the old man seemed to be very embarrassed, so he walked away quietly at once.
It was my turn. I bought our two drinks and the old man’s water as well. We walked up to him and gave him the water with a smile. After walking away, my daughter complained, “Dad, the old man is so impolite. He didn’t even say ‘thank you’ to us!” I told her that we did this not to get a “thank you” from other people. We just wanted to be nice.
Now, my daughter always reaches out to help people. She waves, makes eye contact (接触) and says “hi” to people on the street. She holds doors for people. She scoops up things that other people drop.
When I mentioned this recently, she seemed surprised. I asked her why she was so kind all the time. She said, “Because it is just right to be that way.” Then she added, “And because I see you do that all the time.”

According to media reports on Wednesday, Zhang Zening, a woman from Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, has made more than 50 sets of Hanfu, or traditional Chinese costume (服装).
Zhang majored in materials science and engineering when she was in college and she gave up her job after falling in love with Hanfu. It has been 10 years since Zhang made Hanfu by herself because those of her favorite styles were not for sale. She taught herself painting and costume design, and visited a dozen Chinese cities to explore museums, as well as to draw inspiration from murals (壁画) and literature, before making over 50 different Hanfu from past dynasties.
Zhang said the design of Hanfu was inspired by the murals of past dynasties. “What I did is not only to restore (使复原) a piece of clothing, but more to feel the culture Hanfu possesses, as well as the inspiration and meaning of the mural, which made me very touched and glad,” she said.
In July this year, a group of international students from Canada visited Zhang, hoping to work together to restore Hanfu based on murals that have been lost overseas. Zhang is excited about the project, saying, “Even if the national treasures cannot return to the country, restoring Hanfu based on them allows these lost treasures to be seen by more people. It’s also a contribution from us young people.”
8. Why did Zhang Zening start making Hanfu by herself?
A. She wanted to become a famous designer.
B. Because she wanted to explore Chinese culture.
C. Her favorite Hanfu styles weren’t available for sale.
D. Because she majored in costume design in college.

A. To make Hanfu products for sale.
B. To compare modern clothing with traditional Hanfu.
C. To criticize the loss of Chinese cultural treasures overseas.

11. Why is Zhang excited about the project with Canadian students?

D. Foreigners know more about Chinese culture than locals.

On January 28th, 2025, a special performance called Yang BOT surprised audiences at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, China’s most-watched TV show. Directed by famous filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance with modern robot technology.
In the performance, human-like robots were dressed in colorful costumes to do the yangko dance, a joyful folk dance from northern China often seen during festivals. They spun (旋转) handkerchiefs (手帕) instantly and formed creative group patterns. These robots were developed by Unitree (宇树科技)、a Chinese robotics company. This was not Unitree’s first success. In 2021, their robot cows named “Ben Ben” (犇犇) danced as backup for singer Andy Lau.
The robots learned dance moves through AI and used laser navigation (激光导航) to move safely on stage. Their strong joints (关节) helped them balance perfectly during fast steps. Zhang Yimou explained, “This dance isn’t just fun, it shows how technology can bring new life to traditions.” Thanks to these innovations, the robots won the hearts of millions. On social media, Robot Yangko trended quickly. Young viewers called it “cool”, while older audiences loved its humor and festive spirit. As one fan said, “The Yang BOT program is a perfect mix of China’s tech progress and cultural pride. It’s like watching the future and past dance together!”

Shi Guangyin is a farmer and eco-warrior (生态战士) from Dingbian, Shanxi Province, China. Born in 1952, he grew up in a small town near the desert, where sandstorms often destroyed crops, houses, and even people’s lives. The local weather condition is terrible, and so is life for the locals. Growing up in such an environment, Shi knows how much pain and harm the sand can cause. As a child, Shi experienced the pain of losing his home because of sandstorms. At the age of 8, he lost his best friend in a sandstorm, which made him decide to fight against desertification (沙漠化).
Fighting against the desert is not an easy job. In 1968, Shi started leading local people to plant trees in the desert. After years of hard work, he succeeded in finding ways to grow trees in the sand. In 1984, he sold 84 sheep and borrowed money to plant trees on 200 hectares (公顷) of land. Although he had many difficulties, including failures in the harsh (艰苦) area of Langwosha, Shi never stopped fighting. In 1988, he finally succeeded in greening Langwosha by using new planting technology.
Shi was old. His son, Shi Zhanjun, continued planting trees but sadly died in a car accident while transporting trees. Shi’s grandson, Shi Jianyang, then took up the responsibility. Together, they have turned 23,334 hectares of desert into green land.
Shi believes that fighting against desertification is his lifelong duty. He says, “I shall not stop planting trees until my last breath.” His story shows how one person’s will can make a big difference in protecting nature and living in harmony (和谐) with the environment.
