There is no such thing as a quick Web search. For example, you just want to look up one thing. But before you know it, you are likely to find more than 37 sites, and 45 minutes are likely to be wasted on what should be a 30-second exercise.
We used to waste our spare time in front of the TV. There is an old saying: No one can become successful sitting on the couch watching TV. The same is true of the Internet. And endlessly surfing the Web isn’t going to get your goals done. Nor is it going to magically make you successful. So reduce your endless surfing. But what should you do?
If you really need to get work done without being disturbed, turn off the Internet. Use “airplane mode” on your phone. If you need a better way to do that, there are software apps that will let you block certain websites for a certain amount of time. These apps can block news but still let you do your work, research, etc.
These days information can be easily found through a click or Web search. But do you really need to know the answer to every bit of trivia (琐事) that pops up in the course of your day? Try not to immediately look everything up on the Internet. One search could end up costing you hours of time.
If you must search the Internet, set a time limit on your Web adventure. You’d better set an actual time. This can prevent you from staying online for too long. Leave the Internet immediately when you’re reminded to do that.
When you are surfing the Web, you may want to keep reading each linked (链接的) article. A great way to stop this is to save “other” articles and read them later. Use an app to save those articles. This allows you to save important information while preventing you from endlessly reading now.
4. The author writes the first two paragraphs to .
A. compare televisions and computers B. show how to find information
C. lead into the topic of the passage D. show the function of TV
5. What are the software apps mentioned in Paragraph 3 used for?
A. Blocking advertisements online. B. Saving some money for you.
C. Providing us with interesting news. D. Limiting our use on certain websites.
6. What does the author suggest doing in Paragraph 5?
A. Staying away from the Internet. B. Not communicating with others online.
C. Not reading other linked articles online. D. Setting a time limit for Web search.
7. In which column of a newspaper can you read the passage?
A. Art and Style. B. Science and Technology.
C. Nature and Geography. D. Sports and Health.

The closing performance of Jin Feng Yu Lu was staged at the Beijing Huguang Guild Hall on Dec. 23.This production, presented as a musical drama, shows Peking Opera, telling the story of its dramatic rise and fall and the artistic journey of its masters while representing the spirit of hard work and devotion in the new era.

Archaeological findings show that Chankillo, which is located in the desert of Peru near the Casma-Sechin river, may be the earliest known observatory(天文台) in the Americas. Built over 2,300 years ago, the site has a platform, thirteen towers on the nearby hill, and a temple. There are also stones and walls with confusing entrances to prevent visitors who are not welcome. New discovery has found that Chankillo was used for a short period of time between the fourth century BCE and the early first century CE. But it was later given up, and remained largely forgotten until the nineteenth century.
Chankillo is unique among ancient observatory sites because of its two observation points; similar sites around the world only have one point, which does not provide the measurement to track passage of time over a full year. The thirteen towers of Chankillo, located between two observation points, mark the full year’s cycle of sunrises or sunsets, which slowly move across the skyline throughout the year.
By watching the sunrise or sunset from the observation points, the people in Chankillo would have been able to determine the date within one to two days and could therefore work out the schedule of seasonal events, including planting and gathering times, as well as the festivals. Archaeological findings at Chankillo also suggest that sun admiration appeared in the Andes around 2,000 years before the well-known Inca Empire.
In July 2021, the Chankillo Observatory was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding example of architectural and scientific heritage in human history. This choice shows that it’s very important for learning about how ancient people thought and watched the skies, ensuring this special heritage continues to benefit all people.
12. The stones and walls with confusing entrances can .
A. move across the skyline B. prevent visitors who are not welcome
C. help people plant D. measure time
13. What made Chankillo different from other ancient observatories?
A. The oldest design. B. Its location.
C. Its technology. D. Its two observation points.
14. Which of the following events was most likely to happen to people in Chankillo?
A. They divided a year into 12 months.
B. They celebrated the Spring Festival.
C. They farmed according to the seasons.
D. They got their food mainly by hunting
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Chankillo: an Ancient Observatory
B. UNESCO’s World Heritage List
C. The Inca Empire and Sun Admiration
D. The History of Peru’s Ancient Sites

My parents ran a small grocery store near my house in San Francisco. They always kept a big box by the entrance where people could donate cans of soup and stuff to our local food bank.
“For some reason, our food-donation box just isn’t filling up lately, ”said my dad. “Maybe it’s time to think of a way to remind folks about the food bank, ” replied my mom. We talked about having fireworks, but Mom smilingly said it was a little outside our budget. Dad suggested a talent show because it was fun and people could pay for tickets with food donations. We all gladly agreed.
Word for the talent show got out. While my parents posted information online about the event, we kids made some signs. My friend Mareya came over to help out. “I’d like to do an act in the show, but I don’t know what to do, ” I told Mareya. “Well, since the food-bank thing is about sharing, ” said Mareya, “Why not write a song about that? ” I told Mareya that writing a song was not a problem. But I’d be too nervous to sing it. Plus, I didn’t think I was good enough! She shrugged. “What if we sang it together? ”
Since Mareya had the world’s prettiest voice and also happened to play the guitar, I agreed. The act would be a huge success. You wouldn’t believe how many people came by the store over the next week to sign up to perform: dancers, Hula-Hoopers, banjo players, comedians, poets, and a boy who did tricks with his adorable poodles Salt and Pepper!
Mareya and I practiced and practiced, and I was feeling pretty good about our act. But on the morning of the performance, Mareya called with bad news. She had a serious stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

【答案】 Para 1: “There’s no way I’m going on without you,” I told her. But Mareya insisted that I should perform alone. “You’ve practiced so hard, and the song is beautiful. The audience will love it,” she encouraged me. Though my heart was pounding, I decided to give it a try. As I stepped onto the stage, the spotlight felt blinding, and my hands trembled. I took a deep breath and began to sing. To my surprise, the audience started clapping along, and their smiles gave me the courage to continue. By the end of the song, the room erupted in applause. I couldn’t believe I had done it!
Para 2: Once I was off the stage, ashamed, my mom wrapped me in a big hug. “You were amazing!” she said, her eyes shining with pride. I told her how nervous I had been and how I almost didn’t go through with it. “But you did, and that’s what matters,” she replied. Just then, Mareya called again. She had been listening to the performance over the phone and was thrilled. “I knew you could do it!” she exclaimed. The event was a huge success, and the donation box was overflowing with cans of soup and other items. I realized that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to something truly special.
