What would life be like if you give up using your cell phone? Will it become boring?
Twenty-eight eighth-graders at St. Matthew School in San Francisco will tell you it can still be rich and colorful.
These students took part in their school’s “tech-free” challenge. They couldn’t use cell phones for two weeks from Nov 11 to Nov 22.
The idea was to help students understand how technology has affected their lives, said Denise Uhl, principal of the school.
Uhl did a survey on technology usage among the eighth-graders before thinking of the challenge. She found that 84 percent of the students said they didn’t like it “when everyone was on their cell phones”, but they didn’t know what to do about it. The answer was actually easy—to stop constantly using cell phones.
To help students understand the point, Uhl created the activity. It was warmly welcomed among students.
“I wanted to sign up for the tech-free challenge because it was just really a good idea to do it,” eighth-grader Joe told local newspaper Catholic San Francisco. “I wanted to get closer to my family. And it really worked. I started to hang out with my family more. We watched more family movies and we played a lot of board games.”

I was twenty years old, and my parents were looking forward to the day when I would be earning my own living. Unfortunately, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted my future occupation to be. The only thing I did know was that I did not want to spend the next 45 years teaching, being a nurse or sitting in an office. But that was before the postman delivered a catalogue (目录) of courses that were being offered at the local college. As I looked through it, I was attracted by a page that talked about the difficulties faced by deaf people in their everyday lives and how students could help by learning sign language. It went on to say that graduates of the course usually find work in different organizations, such as law companies, the Stock Exchange, insurance companies and banks. Then I saw something that really caught my eye: “Singer” are also needed for sporting events, concerts, theatrical performances and, believe it or not, circuses! By the time I got to the bottom of the page, I knew I had found the perfect occupation.
I enrolled (注册) on the course, which to my parents’ great delight was free of charge. The course was brilliant. My favourite part was the final lesson, when our teacher asked us to sign our favourite song. It was really difficult because not only did we have to sign the words, but we also had to find a way of showing whether the song was happy or sad and whether the beat was slow or fast. It was the hardest thing I have ever done—but also the most rewarding.

Many Chinese girls love "small, fresh meat", which refers to young, effeminate(女人气的) male stars. However, not everyone is a fan of them. On Sept. 6, an article described some male stars as too effeminate.
This came after CCTV was criticized for inviting several young male stars to perform on First Class for the New Semester,an educational TV show for primary and secondary school students, which aired 5 days earlier. After that, many parents left comments online, saying the stars in the show had a bad influence on their children.
The popularity of effeminate male stars is partly down to the influence of Japanese and South Korean pop culture, an expert told China Daily. However, the “femininity” of males isn't a recent social phenomenon. In fact, being effeminate was popular among Chinese men centuries ago.
Indeed, the debate about effeminate male stars has been going on for a while. In July, a Hong Kong singer said during the singing reality show Sing! China that he feels tired of seeing effeminate male stars. “It isn't that they're not good, but we should discover ourselves.”He said during the show.
His opinion was shared by a Chinese director. “Some young actors are feminine and they should be more manly,” he said.
Deng Xiquan, head of the Youth Research Institute at the China Youth and Children Research Center, believes such a phenomenon is completely natural.“It will be replaced by a new youth culture at some stage. If a man has feminine beauty, this doesn't mean that he lacks responsibility,” Deng told China Daily. Deng's opinion was echoed by the People's Daily.“A man's strength should be judged on the basis of their inner qualities - not their physical appearance,” it wrote.

Sports, school are tiring. But there is a great way to unwind after all of those activities. Go to north London, to the coolest part of the city — Camden. There you can find fashion trends (流行,趋向) and famous people.
Sam and I walked down Camden High Street and made our way to a bridge over Regent’s Canal. It is a 9-mile man-made river that goes through London.
We went into a big market and saw crazy signs, fun T-shirts, and things like hand-made earrings for sale. We bought Chinese fried noodles. It tasted very different from the noodles we make at home, and we ate it with a fork instead of chopsticks!
Camden is famous for the punk (朋克) style that started in the 1970s. Punks walked around with bright pink and green hair, broken clothes with safety pins, metal buttons (纽扣) and pierced ears and lips. Punk music shops played loud, heavy rock music.
But there were also groups of hippies (嬉皮士) with big sweaters. They sat in cafes drinking soymilk, with black clothes, black lipstick and painted white faces.
Besides all these “normal” people, a lot of famous people come to Camden. Actor Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Caribbean lives there.
Camden is especially known as a home to famous musicians. Lots of top bands played here, including Coldplay, Oasis — and Sam’s favourite band, The Vaccines. I had never heard of them before. But luckily they were playing that night in Camden.

Are you an eating- lover? Do you want to eat every delicious food in the world? Then do you watch the popular program A Bite of China?
