The dog days, also called sanfutian in Chinese, refer to the hottest and most humid days of the year. This hottest period can be different from year to year.It starts in July and lasts for about 30 to 40 days.It has three stages:chufu, zhongfu and mofu. Zhongfu is usually the hottest of the three. It lasted for twenty days this year.
Because of the high temperatures, people may feel uncomfortable and have a poor appetite(胃口).Some even get sick from eating too much cold food.
To stay healthy,it is important to choose proper foods during the dog days.Foods which are easy to digest(消化) and full of protein(蛋白质)are good choices, such as various vegetables, chicken, eggs and peanuts. It's better not to eat uncooked, cold or spicy foods.Besides choosing proper foods, the taste of a dish is also important.Sour taste can improve the appetite and bitter taste makes people feel refreshed.

Have you ever heard of face changing,or bianlian in Chinese? Face changing started 300 years ago.Now it's popular in the southern part of China. It's an important part of Sichuan Opera. While the actors are performing, you can see different feelings and characters through their face masks(面具).It's said that ancient people painted their faces to drive away wild animals.Later,Sichuan Opera makes this ancient skill become its own part and turns it into an art.
In Sichuan Opera, many skills are used to change masks, and they have been passed down only within theatre families. In the beginning, opera actors changed the colors of their faces during shows by blowing into a bowl of red, black or gold powder(粉末).The powder would stick to their oiled skin quickly. In this way, actors could change their faces in just a few seconds.Full-face painted silk masks are often used by modern actors. They are so thin that actors can change about 10 masks in 20 seconds. While giving the performance, actors wave their arms and turn their heads, and their painted masks are changed again and again.
No matter how many times the face changing is shown in Sichuan Opera, every time you can find people lost in wonder with their eyes and mouths wide open. And don't be surprised when you see the face changing of Sichuan Opera on the street of a foreign country. The traditional Chinese art is getting popular around the world.

①A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost? If you answered 10 cents, you're not alone—most people give the same answer(the correct answer is 5 cents). It's an example of how we often depend on intuitive responses(直觉反应).
②The bat and ball question helps explain why we often believe in news that's not true.It is part of human nature to believe. But the way to deal with untrue news is to verify(验证)—in other words,to stop and question what you know.
③In research,Sloman invented a discovery called “Helium Rain” and shared it with a group of volunteers. He told them he couldn't fully explain it.Most volunteers thought they didn't get it either and scored their understanding as 1 out of 7 at self-check.Then,another group was told that he could explain it well. These volunteers felt they understood more and scored themselves 2 out of 7.
④Studies also show that knowledge spreads like a contagion(传染疾病).“If everyone around you is saying they understand why things happen, then you’ll start thinking that you understand.
⑤Another reason for the spread of untrue news is that we are more likely to believe information that supports what we already think. For example, ▲ .
⑥So,in a world where misleading information is common,is there a way to protect ourselves? “I don't think it's possible to train everyone to verify everything that they meet,” Sloman says.
⑦However,training people to care about fact-checking is important.Think of the stories shared on your social media(社交媒体) every day.Perhaps not all of them are true.We should check things and not just accept them at face value.
( )22.What's the purpose of using the example about the bat and ball question?
A.To show us that people often forget skills that they have learned at school.
