UW Student Classical Music Jacoby Competition
The worlds of competition and classical music meet head-on as the University of Wyoming’s finest student musicians will be chosen during the UW Symphony Orchestra’s Jacoby Competition at 7:30 pm on May 6 in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.
Tickets are $19 for the general public, $15 for the elderly and $9 for students. To order tickets, call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.tix.com/ticket-sales/uwyo/6984.
The concert is named after Dorothy Jacoby, a musical and founding member of the local Symphony Association and a longtime supporter of classical music in Laramie. After her death, her sons, Peter and Michael Jacoby, made a generous contribution in honour of their mother.
“The Jacoby Competition never fails to be one of the UW Symphony Orchestra’s most exciting events,” says UW Department of Music Professor Michael Griffith. “What you will hear is actually the finals of a two-stage competition.”
Several months ago, many UW music students played their selected pieces in the audition (试演) round. A group of well-known musicians served as judges and chose the seven top students to perform in the finals concert. Another set of judges will be at the performance and will decide the best two performances of the evening. The winners will get the $2,500 prize that is awarded at the performance.

Ariel Procaccia has always been attracted by big questions and hard problems. When he was a teenager, Procaccia loved reading books about big ideas. One of his favorites was Fermat’s Last Theorem, which tells the story of a math puzzle (难题) that remained unsolved for more than 300 years. Another book he enjoyed was A Brief History of Time, which explores deep questions about the universe.
By the time he went to college, Procaccia knew he wanted to study two of three things — math, computer science and physics. “But my dad is a physics professor, and it seemed strange to do the same thing he did,” Procaccia says. “So I chose the other two.”
Today, Procaccia is a computer scientist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. There, he designs computer algorithms (算法) that can solve problems quickly and fairly. Through this work, Procaccia has been able to address some big problems that directly affect people’s daily lives.
One of his favorite projects is Spliddit.org. It’s a free website that helps people divide things in a way that mathematically ensures fairness. For example one of the apps on Spliddit is rent division. Say a few roommates rent an apartment and have different preferences over rooms. The goal is to assign (分配) the rooms and divide the rent in a way that each roommate feels they got the best deal. Since Spliddit was started in 2014, it has been used by hundreds of thousands of people.
For those who think computer science is only about computers, Procaccia has a different view. He believes it is really about solving problems in the best way possible. He encourages people to explore it, even if they think they are not interested in computers. He says, “It’s not just about the machines; it’s about using them to make a real difference in people’s lives.”
24. What can we learn about Procaccia from the first paragraph?
A. He has a curious mind. B. He longed to be a teacher.
C. He was a quiet teenager. D. He enjoys writing stories.
25. Why did Procaccia study math and computer science in college?
A. He accepted his father’s suggestion.
B. He failed to choose the subjects he loved.
C. He was unwilling to follow his father’s path.
D. He thought computer science was more popular.
26. What is the main purpose of the website Spliddit.org?
A. To encourage students to explore math. B. To share information on low-rent housing.
C. To help its users find suitable roommates. D. To offer solutions to fair division problems.
27. What is Procaccia’s opinion about computer science?
A. It is mainly about computers. B. It aims to improve people’s daily lives.
C. It only draws college students. D. It depends on future computer scientists.

A recent update from the U. S. Geological Survey offers new insights into the chances of Yellowstone’s supervolcano erupting. This volcano is one of the world’s largest active volcanoes.
Written by Mark Stelten, a scientist at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, the post analyzes (分析) the volcano’s eruptive history and current activity to show that the sleeping giant should, thankfully, remain asleep for a while longer.
Stelten says that predicting (预测) the likelihood of an eruption depends on knowing the eruptive history of the volcanic system. Scientists need to count past eruptions and when they happened. This helps them figure out eruption probabilities.
To explain this idea, Stelten takes a baseball for example in the update: “Imagine you live next to a baseball field, and sometimes balls land in your yard. To guess when the next ball will come, you count how many have landed in a period (let’s say, one year). Then, you can estimate the chances of another ball arriving tomorrow, next week, or next month.”
Applying this approach to Yellowstone, Stelten notes that the volcano has not erupted in the past 70,000 years, but was active with rhyolite lava flows every 20,000 years on average between 160,000 and 70,000 years ago.
“Does this mean we are now in the volcanic off-season? Or does it mean we are ‘due’ for an eruption?” Stelten asks.
“The reality is that we cannot say for sure based on these methods alone. Instead, we must combine these types of predictions with real-time monitoring of the volcano to assess (评估) the state of the volcanic system. Right now, the chance of an eruption is about 0.001% per year, and even that number might be too high,” Stelten writes.
There are no warning signs of an eruption. However, as Stelten notes, “One day — maybe in thousands of years or even tens of thousands of years — this could change. Scientists will continue to watch for any signs.”
28. What does the post find about Yellowstone’s supervolcano?
A. It has shown warning signs of erupting. B. It is the world’s largest active volcano.
C. It keeps inactive in the foreseeable future. D. It will shape our views on natural disasters.
29. Why did Stelten mention a baseball in the update?
A. To introduce a popular sports event to readers.
B To stress the importance of doing more exercise.
C. To warn people to stay away from baseball fields.
D. To explain how scientists predict volcanic eruptions.
30. What did Stelten think of Yellowstone’s eruptive history?
A. It will remind researchers to change methods.
B. It plays a part in assessing the volcanic system.
C. It means we are now in the volcanic off-season.
D. It helps scientists to understand climate change.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. A science report. B. A tourist attraction.
C. A famous expert. D. A mathematical error.

Plants play a key role in controlling Earth’s climate, but new research suggests rising temperatures may break this balance. Dr. Sean Michaletz, a researcher at the University of British Columbia, studies how plants respond to heat. His findings challenge a long-held idea about how plants lose water, leading to new ways of understanding climate change.
Previously, scientists thought plants lost most of their water through tiny pores (气孔) that close in high temperatures to save water. However, Michaletz’s research finds that as temperatures rise, plants lose more water through their cuticle (角质层) — which cannot close — than through their tiny pores. The thinner the cuticle, the greater the water loss.
This means that in extreme heat, plants continue losing water but cannot take in carbon dioxide (CO2), reducing their role as a carbon sink. In extreme temperatures, they could even become carbon sources, worsening climate change.
Michaletz’s studies show that photosynthesis (光合作用) starts to break down between 40℃ and 51℃. In the 2021 heatwave, temperatures soared to 49.6℃, pushing plants to their limits. Michaletz’s ongoing research suggests that 60℃ may be the highest temperature plants can survive — beyond this point, proteins break down, leading to cell damage and death. Only a few desert and tropical species have ever been observed surviving at such extreme temperatures.
Scientists are working to find out the “tipping point” where Earth’s vegetation gives out more CO2 than it takes in, which turns them from a carbon sink into a carbon source. This tipping point could happen at around 30℃, though key uncertainties remain — especially how microclimates and water affect photosynthesis under extreme heat.
Plants have survived hot weather for hundreds of millions of years, but all species face upper limits set by the laws of physics. While some plants can bear higher temperatures better than others, scientists are unsure how soon they might reach their breaking point. Based on recent measurements, we may be closer than we think.
32 It was previously believed that plants in hot weather could ______.
A. lose water through their cuticle B. have side effects on the ecosystem
C. send out more carbon than expected D. save water by closing their tiny pores
33. What does Michaletz’s research suggest?
A. Plants’ cuticle could stop water loss in the heat.
B. Some desert plants can predict extreme weather.
C. Photosynthesis starts to break down at around 60℃.
D. Rising temperatures reduce plants’ ability to take in CO2.
34. What does the underlined word “soared” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Fell sharply. B. Changed daily. C. Increased quickly. D. Moved carefully.
35. What can be inferred about global warming from the last paragraph?
A. It is likely to get worse soon. B. It is reaching the breaking point.
C. It is not as serious as we thought. D. It is not based on the latest study.

Anna was a cleaner at a local bakery (面包店), a job she loved, which brought her a sense of purpose. Even though Anna was happy with her job, she had always wanted to bake tasty bread and cakes that would bring joy to people. However, fear of failure prevented her from trying it in person.
One day, Anna’s best friend, Julie, announced that she was starting a food vlog to show her cooking experiments. When Anna heard this, she felt a wave of admiration. “You should join me!” Julie suggested. “You have so many amazing ideas. We could do this together!”
Anna hesitated, “But I’m not a baker, Julie. I’ve only ever done the cleaning for the bakery, and I’m frightened of making mistakes in front of an audience.”
Julie comforted her, “Everyone makes mistakes, Anna! And the only way to get better is to try. This could be a great opportunity for you!”
Anna couldn’t shake her fears, but Julie’s words stayed with her. Weeks passed, and as Julie’s vlog gained popularity, Anna found herself wondering, “What if?” The idea of sharing her love for cooking with the world was attractive, but she couldn’t forget criticism (批评) that started in her childhood — her father had always been tough on her, pushing her to achieve more.
One evening, after finishing the work at the bakery, Anna found an old notebook by chance when tidying up her room. The notebook was filled with her recipes (食谱) and sketches. Looking through the pages, she felt a sense of joy.
After a sleepless night, Anna made a decision. The next day, she came to Julie with a half-hearted smile. “OK. let’s do it. I’ll join you on your vlog.”
Julie jumped with excitement, and they quickly set a date for their first video — making a signature cake recipe together. Anna spent days researching, practicing recipes, and watching cooking videos.

For example, one of the apps on Spliddit is rent division.
A 25. C 26. D 27. B

B. To stress the importance of doing more exercise.
C. To warn people to stay away from baseball fields.
D. To explain how scientists predict volcanic eruptions.
30. What did Stelten think of Yellowstone’s eruptive history?
A It will remind researchers to change methods.
B. It plays a part in assessing the volcanic system.
C. It means we are now in the volcanic off-season.
D. It helps scientists to understand climate change.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. A science report. B. A tourist attraction.
C A famous expert. D. A mathematical error.
C 29. D 30. B 31. A

根据第四段“To explain this idea, Stelten takes a baseball for example in the update: “Imagine you live next to a baseball field, and sometimes balls land in your yard. To guess when the next ball will come, you count how many have landed in a period (let’s say, one year). Then, you can estimate the chances of another ball arriving tomorrow, next week, or next month.”(为了解释这个想法,Stelten在更新中以棒球为例:“想象一下,你住在棒球场旁边,有时球会落在你的院子里。为了猜测下一个球什么时候会来,你可以计算一段时间内(比如一年)有多少球落在地上。然后,你可以估计明天、下周或下个月另一个球到达的机会。”)”可知,Stelten用棒球场中棒球落入院子的例子,类比科学家通过统计历史喷发次数和间隔时间预测火山喷发概率的方法,可得出Stelten在最新消息中提到棒球是为了解释科学家如何预测火山爆发。故选D项。
【30题详解】

32. It was previously believed that plants in hot weather could ______.
A lose water through their cuticle B. have side effects on the ecosystem
C. send out more carbon than expected D. save water by closing their tiny pores

根据第二段中“Previously, scientists thought plants lost most of their water through tiny pores (气孔) that close in high temperatures to save water. (以前,科学家认为植物的大部分水分都是通过微小的气孔流失的,这些气孔在高温下闭合以节省水分)”可知,以前人们认为,在炎热的天气里,植物可以通过闭合气孔来节约水分。故选D项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“This means that in extreme heat, plants continue losing water but cannot take in carbon dioxide (CO2), reducing their role as a carbon sink.
根据最后一段“Plants have survived hot weather for hundreds of millions of years, but all species face upper limits set by the laws of physics. While some plants can bear higher temperatures better than others, scientists are unsure how soon they might reach their breaking point. Based on recent measurements, we may be closer than we think. (植物在炎热的天气中生存了数亿年,但所有物种都面临物理定律设定的上限。虽然有些植物比其他植物更能承受更高的温度,但科学家们不确定它们多久能达到极限。根据最近的测量,我们可能比我们想象的更接近)”可知,植物有温度上限,且它们达到临界点的时间可能比想象的更接近,这表明全球变暖可能加速恶化。故选A项。
As we become increasingly aware of the impact our actions have on the environment, more and more of us are looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Throughout a given trip, both big and small decisions you make can affect a lot the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) produced by your holiday. ___36___? Here are some tips on enjoying a “green” holiday.
· Keep it light on luggage (行李). Every single extra kilo you carry around drives up emissions. ___37___. Packing (收拾行李) with purpose can actively cut your carbon footprint. So you can travel with a more thoughtful, lighter bag. It’s a small change that can make a big difference.
· Explore with care. ___38___. Instead of fighting traffic, you might find hidden treasures by chance, and you’re more likely to meet new people. This habit can connect you with the city you’re visiting and help you know the city better.
· ___39___. Be a big believer in asking questions, especially when it comes to a hotel’s impact on people and the planet. Ask your hotel to share how it sources renewable energy, saves water, and manages waste. If the hotel can’t show proof of similar action, keep digging. The more we, as tourists, ask similar questions, the more the industry will move toward responsible practices.
· Do your part to protect the local community. Volunteer for a beach clean-up, join a reforestation project, or just pick up rubbish as you travel. Even such small efforts can help protect natural beauty for future generations. ___40___.
A. Ask about your hotel’s carbon footprint
B. What do you think of the benefits of them
C. Do something big to make others aware of the problem
D. So how can we make a difference when heading on holiday
E. What’s more, it slows you down when you explore a new city
F. Changing from taxis to bikes means you’re kind to the environment
G. Your actions make your trip meaningful long after you’ve gone home
D 37. E 38. F 39. A 40. G
前文“Throughout a given trip, both big and small decisions you make can affect a lot the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) produced by your holiday. (在一次旅行中,你所做的大大小小的决定都会对你假期产生的温室气体排放总量产生很大的影响)”提到旅行中的决策会影响碳排放,后文“Here are some tips on enjoying a “green” holiday. (这里有一些享受“绿色”假期的建议)”给出具体建议,此处需一个问句引出绿色旅行的主题,因此D项“So how can we make a difference when heading on holiday (那么,我们如何在度假时做出改变呢)”符合语境,承前启后。故选D。
【37题详解】
前文“Keep it light on luggage (行李). Every single extra kilo you carry around drives up emissions. (行李要轻便。你每多带一公斤就会增加排放)”建议轻装出行,指出行李过多的一个弊端,因此E项“What’s more, it slows you down when you explore a new city (此外,这也会拖慢你探索新城市的脚步)”符合语境,补充说明行李过多的另一弊端,承接前文。故选E。
【38题详解】
后文“Instead of fighting traffic, you might find hidden treasures by chance, and you’re more likely to meet new people. (你可能会偶然发现隐藏的宝藏,而不是与交通拥堵作斗争,你也更有可能结识新朋友)”提到避开拥堵交通、偶遇隐藏景点和便于交友三个好处,因此F项“Changing from taxis to bikes means you’re kind to the environment (从打车改为骑车意味着你对环境更友好)”符合语境,指出骑车出行更环保,后一句是骑车出行其他的好处。故选F。
【39题详解】
后文“Be a big believer in asking questions, especially when it comes to a hotel’s impact on people and the planet. Ask your hotel to share how it sources renewable energy, saves water, and manages waste. If the hotel can’t show proof of similar action, keep digging. (坚持问问题,尤其是当酒店对人类和地球的影响时。要求你的酒店分享如何使用可再生能源、节约用水和管理废物。如果酒店不能提供类似行为的证据,那就继续调查)”详细说明如何询问酒店的环保措施,此处作为段首句,应建议了解酒店的环保情况,因此A项“Ask about your hotel’s carbon footprint (询问酒店的碳足迹情况)”符合语境,统领段落内容。故选A。
前文“Even such small efforts can help protect natural beauty for future generations. (即使是这样的小努力也可以为子孙后代保护自然美景)”强调保护当地社区的长期价值,因此G项“Your actions make your trip meaningful long after you’ve gone home (你的行动会让旅行的意义延续至归家之后)”符合语境,总结这种持续性影响,承接前文。故选G。

Vincent van Gogh is my favourite painter. Born in the Netherlands in 1853, he created many famous works, such as The Starry Night and Sunflowers. In spite of his struggles with mental illness and poverty during his lifetime, his paintings are now celebrated worldwide for their bold colours and emotional depth.
I admire Van Gogh because his art expresses strong feelings. The swirling skies in The Starry Night and the bright yellow petals in Sunflowers show his unique style and passion for nature.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
On the day of filming, the kitchen was lively as Julie set up the camera.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Anna took a deep breath, and slowly she nodded, “OK. Let’s try again.”
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
On the day of filming, the kitchen was lively as Julie set up the camera. Anna’s hands trembled slightly as she measured the flour, her mind racing with doubts. Julie noticed her tension and gave her an encouraging wink. “Just pretend it’s just us, like always,” she whispered. Then, Anna focused on the familiar motions — mixing batter, folding in ingredients — and soon, her nervousness faded. The cake went into the oven, filling the kitchen with a sweet, buttery aroma. When they pulled it out, golden and perfectly risen, Anna couldn’t help but grin. The first video had gone well, but she still stumbled over her words when explaining steps.
Anna took a deep breath, and slowly she nodded, “OK. Let’s try again.” This time, she spoke more naturally, even joking about her early baking disasters. Viewers loved their chemistry, and comments poured in — many praising Anna’s warmth and creativity. One message stood out: “Your passion shines through!” Reading it, Anna realized something: her father’s voice no longer mattered as much as the joy she felt sharing her craft. The bakery’s owner, impressed, even asked her to contribute weekly specials — finally, Anna was baking for others, just as she’d always dreamed.
