One day, a good friend gave me a gift. It was a book filled with interesting and uplifting stories. I remember I began reading it that very night. And I would read a story or two before going to bed each night.
One evening I read a story about hugging called “It Can’t Happen Here?” The opening quotation by Virginia Satir said we need four hugs a day for survival, eight for maintenance (保持) and twelve hugs a day to grow.
I read this story on a Tuesday. I knew it was Tuesday because on Wednesday I walked into my classroom and declared that every Wednesday would be known as “Hugging Day.” I told my students everyone needs hugs to live and grow.
I was already a hugger and had always greeted my students with a warm hug each morning. But after reading the story in this new book, I decided that on Hugging Day everyone needed to make sure they got at least twelve hugs. I wanted my students to grow. All hugs didn’t have to come from me, but I was ready, willing, and able to give as many as needed.
My students lined up at my desk with questions and left with a hug. They hugged me before and after lunch. They hugged me when they came to school in the morning and when they left for home in the afternoon. And perhaps best of all, the children in my classroom hugged each other.
Every Wednesday, my students counted their hugs to make sure they were getting their fair share. I continued the practice for several years. Through the years, I hugged all kinds of kids — those who were untidy and those who were clean, children who were gifted academically and others whose gifts lay elsewhere. Among them, Nicole, one of my students, stood out for her enthusiasm about Hugging Day. She was a shy girl who rarely spoke up in class, but on Hugging Day, she would always be the first to line up to hug me. I could see how much a hug meant to her.

【答案】
One Wednesday afternoon, I was cleaning up my classroom. I needed to get everything ready for the next day. Just as I was about to leave, a soft voice called into the empty classroom, “May I come in?” I looked up to see a girl standing in the doorway. It was Nicole. She stood there with her arms wrapped tightly around herself, as if she was trying to hold back her feelings. She looked up at me with a mixture of hope and sadness. Obviously, she was trying hard not to cry. “Nicole, what’s wrong?” I said gently, inviting her to come in.
Nicole fell into my arms and began to sob. Tears streamed down her cheeks when I hugged her tightly. We sat down in the chairs, and she began to pour out her heart. She told me about the challenges she was facing — peer pressure, family issues, and the overwhelming stress of growing up. We talked, we shared, and we left that room to go our separate ways. But I learned something new that day. Sometimes it doesn’t take four hugs to survive. Sometimes, it just takes one.

My dog, Molly, ran after me as I walked to my car that fall morning. I had had her only a couple of weeks, but we had become nearly inseparable. I’d gone through heart surgery a few months back. I figured taking care of a dog would keep me active. So I went to the local animal-rescue center. The little dog shaking slightly in a cage caught my eye right away. I could tell she longed to be picked up and hugged.
I went to talk to the shelter worker. “She just came in,” the woman told me. “Her name is Molly.” The worker opened Molly’s cage and let me pick her up. I stroked her silky fur and she stopped shaking. I filled out the paperwork and took Molly home.
That fall morning last year I decided to take Molly with me for shopping. I opened the door. “Come on, Molly. Let’s go.” She jumped into the car and settled down on the passenger seat. I got behind the wheel and started the car.
We live in a remote area up in the hills outside San Rafael, California. You have to drive up the mountain in low gear (低速挡) to get to our driveway, which is barely wide enough for one car and ends at a steep valley.
I twisted around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to shield my eyes. “Oh, no! The edge!” I shouted. The car slipped in the soft soil, and rolled. I fell inside the car as it turned over down the valley. The car rolled faster. Four, five, six rolls until I heard a horrible crunch. We landed upside down. I looked over to find Molly. She was still in the passenger seat and, thankfully, she was okay.
“Sorry, girl,” I gasped. Something was wrong with my left leg. I grabbed my cell phone but just as I had feared, I couldn’t get a signal. Now what? There was a hole in the driver’s side rear window. It was small, but just maybe…

【答案】
I gently put Molly’s body through the hole. “Go home, baby,” I said. Molly jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley. My heart beat fast in my chest, so I took a pill. I shouted, but knew that wouldn’t make any difference. No one would hear. A sense of helplessness flooded over me. I sat there for hours and couldn’t feel anything in my left leg. When the last bit of light filtering through the leaves faded away, I heard a voice calling my name.
The voice was from Robin, my neighbor. “Help!” I shouted with all my strength. “Are you all right?” Robin yelled back. “I just called the police!” It seemed only minutes later I heard an ambulance approaching. The rescue crew sent me to a hospital without any delay. After all sorts of tests in the hospital, a doctor told me there was nothing serious. Molly got right up next to me on my bed. I suddenly realized that true treasures in life are often found in the companions we choose along the way.

It all started with the gift. A few months before I began college, my parents surprised me with the one thing every young adult desires: a brand new laptop. That summer, I was glued to the screen, living in a digital world. I spent hours on social media, chatting with friends, and ignoring the real one around me. I was more concerned with the virtual interactions than the actual people and places around me. Being online was more important than anything else.
So, when I heard my dad’s plan for our family vacation that year, I was less than thrilled. “This year,” he announced, “we’re going to try something different. We’re going to a farm.”
A farm wasn’t my ideal vacation, but it was still a break from the routine. I went through the packing up and planning, barely listening to the instructions. My mind was elsewhere, on the Internet, where my conversations never stopped. I was so absorbed in my digital world that the first time I really paid attention to the real world was when we get to our destination – a remote farm.
I stared out the window to see the breathtaking views outside. The air coming through the open windows was warm and carried the fresh smell of the forest. But the view wasn’t what caught my attention. The moment I got off the car, I rushed into the farmhouse. The real shock came when I tried to check my e-mail and found that I had no Internet connection. I was standing there with a long face when I heard the laughter of three children. So, I went up to them and asked, “Is the Internet available here?”
“We have no Wi-Fi here.” a boy, named Ethan, said softly. And then he told me they were sons of the farm owner. I looked at him, too depressed to say anything. My laptop would be completely useless. I would live in the wilderness for a week with no way to connect to the online world. I was close to tears, afraid of the boredom I had to tolerate in the coming days.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Early next morning, Ethan and his brothers came to invite me to hang out with them. At first, I hesitated, still upset about the lack of the Internet. But their eager faces were hard to resist, so I reluctantly went along. Ethan led us to the hen house, and we spent a while collecting eggs, with him teaching me the gentle way to handle the hens. Later, we went to the meadow, where we chased colorful butterflies and lay on the soft grass, staring at the clouds. Despite my initial reluctance, I gradually found myself getting into the activities, drawn by their simple joys.
Surprisingly, I never thought of my laptop that week. Each day was filled with new adventures. We helped the farmhands with various tasks like milking cows and mending fences. In the evenings, we sat around a bonfire, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories. The warm company, the fresh air, and the beauty of nature made me realize how much I had been missing in my virtual world. By the time it was time to leave, I was filled with gratitude for this off-grid experience, knowing that real-life connections and the wonders of nature far surpassed the pleasure of the digital world.

Being a single mother had been difficult for Kate ever since her husband passed away. Balancing a job that barely paid enough while taking care of her daughter, Holly had been a daily struggle. Money was always tight, and there were many sacrifices, but Kate was determined to make sure Holly never felt like she was missing out on love or happiness. She had been saving up for this dinner for months, wanting to give Holly a wonderful birthday.
As they stepped into the restaurant, Holly’s excitement was nearly impossible to contain. Her small hands flipped through the menu. Before she could make a choice, a group of waiters appeared, singing “Happy Birthday” as they carried a towering cake. Holly’s eyes grew wide with wonder, her smile stretching from ear to ear. Seeing her daughter’s face light up made every penny Kate had saved worth it. For a moment, Kate forgot about the financial struggles, the hard work, and the sacrifices. All that mattered was Holly's happiness.
As Holly tasted her cake, her face glowing with delight, a waiter approached Kate quietly and gestured for her to step aside. “Ma’am, the cost is going to double,” the waiter said. “Double? Why?” she responded, panic bubbling up in her voice. “The recipe for the cake has changed, and you will have to pay $100 now,” the waiter explained. Her throat tightened. “$100 for a cake?! But...I can’t afford it,” she whispered. “I’m sorry, ma’am. But you’ll have to pay,” the waiter said.
With trembling hands, Kate returned to the table, forcing a smile for Holly. When it was time to leave, Kate felt her heart pounding as she asked Holly to wait by the door. Her mind raced, trying to figure out what she could do. Her hands were trembling as she spoke. But to her surprise, the waiter responded, “The bill has already been paid by a woman.” Tears of relief sprang to Kate’s eyes. “Do you know who she was?” Kate asked, her voice thick with emotion.

【答案】
The waiter pointed toward the exit. Kate turned around and saw a middle-aged woman with a warm smile on her face. She was standing near the door, looking back at Kate. Kate quickly rushed over to thank her. The woman gently held Kate’s hands and said, “I saw you and your daughter. You reminded me of my own mother. She raised me alone too. I know how hard it is. This is my small way of giving back.” Kate was speechless, overcome with gratitude. The woman then handed her a small note and left.
As the woman walked away, Kate stood there, lost in thought. She opened the note, which read, “Love and kindness always find a way.” Those words echoed in her mind. She realized that even in the toughest times, there was always someone willing to offer a helping hand. From that day on, Kate made a promise to herself. She would pass on this kindness, no matter how difficult life got. And whenever she saw someone in need, she would remember this moment and do what she could to make a difference, just like that kind-hearted woman did for her and Holly.

I was incredibly proud of my school, the Maplewood Elementary. It connected me to my roots, as my father and grandfather had all graduated from here.
So, when our teacher Mr. Dow announced a group project to create a brochure (小册子) about our school for its 100th anniversary, I was thrilled. The best three brochures would be displayed in the school library, which was a chance to show the new students how wonderful our school was.
I was paired with two classmates: Jake. who loved photography, and Lily who had a gift for writing. Working with others could be fun, right? But my enthusiasm quickly faded.
Our first meeting was a disaster. When we discussed which part of the school we should focus on, Jake kept talking about cameras and photos. I turned to Lily, hoping for some support. But she simply shrugged and said, “I’m not really into this. It sounds boring.” Jake nodded in agreement. The project seemed to be harder than I thought.
At our next meeting, I tried to lead the conversation back to the project. I shared some interesting facts I had researched about the school. However, neither of them seemed interested. Jake had promised to gather materials from the library, but instead he showed us photos taken on the weekend. Lily hadn’t started her part of the research either, claiming she had been too busy. I felt like I was the only one who cared.
Back home, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I stayed up late that night, trying to create the brochure by myself. But no matter how hard I tried, the result was far from satisfactory. I was exhausted and disheartened. My mom noticed I was upset. “You can’t do this alone,” she gently reminded me. “Jake and Lily have talents that can make this project shine. You just need to find a way to get them involved.”

【答案】
With only three days left, I knew I had to act. After brainstorming some ideas, I invited Jake and Lily to my house. Opening my grandfather’s diary, I pointed at the faded photo of his class. “Your camera can save the moment for the future,” I told Jake, whose eyes suddenly sparkled. Then I suggested he photograph every corner of the school like “time travelers”. Meanwhile, Lily was engaged in my grandfather’s love letter, eager to bring hidden stories back to life. I was busy organizing layouts, combining historical accuracy with creativity. The clock was ticking, but our laughter replaced earlier frustration.
On the final day, we presented our brochure in class. We stood by the blackboard as everyone went through the pages. They examined the brochure carefully, with their fingers tracing the photos, narratives and timelines which connected three generations of graduates. Noticing surprise on every face, we couldn’t wait to hear Mr. Dow’s announcement of the winner. “This work isn’t just about the school anniversary,” he finally said, tapping the cover where our three names shone, “it’s about how its spirit lives through students’ cooperation.” That afternoon in the library, seeing our brochure on display, we realized our combined talents had created what none could alone.

I was in the girls’ room when I heard them discussing me. My choices were either to immediately go out and face them or to do it the coward’s (懦夫) way and stay where I was. I chose the coward’s way.
One girl said, “Did you see what she was wearing, Liz? Those clothes had to come from one of those awful discount stores.”
Liz laughed. “She is a foster (寄养) kid. Come on, I don’t want to be late,” she said.
I waited until they were gone before I came out. I looked down at my skirt from a discount store. I thought about the hours spent baby-sitting in order to earn the money to buy it. I was the new girl coming into the class, and it seemed everyone already knew I lived in a foster home.
I ran out and rushed to the classroom. Mr. Stanford started to talk, and then I really panicked. Each student in the entire school was to write and present a five-minute speech for English class. One winner would be chosen from each class for the school final. Mr. Stanford asked us to give our own topic by next week.
I had always done well in school, although I’d had to change schools. Teachers always told me I could easily make high honors if I would only participate more actively, but how could I speak up in class when I knew my voice would shake? Ever since I was a little girl I had lived with the uncertainty.
With school over, I headed to my personal advisor’s office. When someone was placed in a foster home, emotional support had to follow. JoAnne, my advisor, really did seem to care.

【答案】
I told JoAnne about the girls’ unkind words and the speech assignment. JoAnne listened attentively, her eyes filled with understanding. She gently said, “Those girls don’t know you. Your worth isn’t defined by your clothes or where you live. And this speech? It’s a chance to show them who you truly are.” She encouraged me to think about a topic I was passionate about and shared some tips on overcoming stage fright. Her words gave me a glimmer of hope, and I decided to face this challenge bravely.
The next day I gave Mr. Stanford a paper with my topic written on it. “The Power of Resilience,” it read. I spent the whole week researching and practicing. Standing in front of the mirror, I forced my voice not to shake. When it was my turn to present, my heart pounded, but I remembered JoAnne’s words. I spoke clearly about my experiences in foster homes, the difficulties I’d overcome, and how I’d grown stronger. The class fell silent, and when I finished, there was thunderous applause. I saw the girls who’d laughed at me looking at me with newfound respect.

I was really starving when I stepped out of the city library after an entire afternoon buried in books. Then I smelt something delicious—the hot dog stand at the street corner.
“One hot dog, please!” I nearly rushed to the stand.
“OK, ready soon!” The vendor (摊主) replied cheerfully. As he handed me the hot dog, he grinned, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I guessed that was the slogan for his little business, for the words were painted in cheerful yellow letters on his cart.
I couldn’t wait to take a bite. The warm bread, the chili sauce and the juice in the sausage — it was the best thing in the world! Definitely at that time!
“Five dollars, young lady,” the vendor said, wiping his hands on his apron.
Hot dog in one hand, I reached for my wallet with the other. Just then, “Ouch!” a cry came from behind me. I turned back and found a woman in her 50’s struggling to pick herself up from the ground. Her grocery bag split open with oranges rolling in every direction.
Seeing this, I stuffed the rest of the hot dog into my mouth, picked up the oranges and put them back into her bag. “Are you okay?” I asked with concern.
“Thank you. I didn’t see the pole on the ground,” she breathed. Noticing her hand was wounded, I remembered the Band-Aid(创可贴)in my bag and dug it out. “Thank you so much for your kindness,” the woman said as I carefully applied it to her wound. Across the street, the bus I was about to take was pulling in. Waving a goodbye to the woman, I dashed to the bus stop and barely got aboard before the door closed.
As the bus pulled away, I saw the woman bought a hot dog from the same vendor. On the way, I was always wondering if she would be greeted with the same words, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I was lost in it...

But wait — had I forgotten something? My heart suddenly sank as I realized I hadn’t paid the vendor! Frantically checking my wallet, I confirmed the five dollars were still there. The scene flashed back: I had dropped the wallet while helping the woman. The bus was already moving, and I could do nothing but watch the hot dog stand shrink in the distance, guilt overwhelming me.
“Someone has paid for it,” the vendor smiled. Puzzled, I followed his gaze to the woman I had helped earlier. She waved at me warmly from the street corner. The vendor explained, “She insisted on paying for you, saying kindness deserves kindness.” Tears welled up as I understood — her hot dog purchase wasn’t just for herself. The vendor’s cheerful slogan now carried profound meaning, weaving our small acts of goodwill into something truly “the best in the world.”

We sometimes take our loved ones’ concern for granted and show our worst mood to the family. During my growth, an experience in senior high school stood out in my memory.
As a taxi driver, my dad drove through chaotic streets with heavy traffic. Sometimes he had to deal with rude passengers and struggle with thin income. Despite these, he never complained. Dad was devoted to our family and cared much about us. The sunflower keychain I had given him as a Father’s Day gift in fifth grade had long lost its shine. Yet he had it attached to his leather belt everywhere he went. Every day, he simply headed out early in his worn-out uniform with two patches (补丁) and returned late with a tired but warm smile. When we joked about his “fashionable patches”, he’d laugh and say, “These are my medals of honor!”
As I entered senior high school, my world became overwhelming. Math problems danced in my head. My grades didn’t improve but even declined. School pressures skyrocketed. Even small things would set me off. Dad’s daily “How’s school today?” felt like another weight on my back. I was mean to his inquiries, even though I knew he meant well.
One day after a frustrating exam, I returned home, my backpack strap (肩带) cutting into my shoulder. Dad was calculating the taxi bills then. “Hey,” he said, with a smile on his face, “How is …”
“STOP IT!” The words exploded out of me. “You’re always in my business! Can’t you just...leave me ALONE?”
He froze. The pen he was holding rolled off the table. His face fell, as if I’d thrown cold water on him. Then he stood up slowly and walked to his room. The door shut softly—not a slam (砰地关上), just a quiet click—that somehow hurt me worse.

【答案】
I was shocked myself and my eyes fell on the keychain, my mind racing. The faded sunflower, once golden and bright, now mirrored Dad’s silent sacrifices. Memories flooded in: him skipping meals to pay for my textbooks, his cracked hands gripping the steering wheel, and the way he proudly called his patches “medals.” My outburst replayed in my head, sharp and ugly. Guilt gnawed at me as I realized his questions weren’t prying—they were his lifeline to my world. The quiet click of the door echoed louder than any argument.
I knocked at the door and it opened. Dad sat on the edge of his bed, the sunflower keychain trembling in his hands. “I… I’m sorry,” I choked out. He looked up, eyes weary but soft. “I just wanted to know you’re okay,” he murmured. Tears blurred my vision as I hugged him, his patched uniform rough against my cheek. “Your medals are real,” I whispered. He laughed, a warm sound that melted the tension. From then on, his “How’s school?” became a bridge, not a burden.

When I was growing up, Pippa, my childhood cat, was a big part of my life. During my childhood, she, my beloved cat, played a significant role in my life. She was affectionate and would welcome me home from school. Her passing due to illness had a great impact on me, leading me to decide that when I had my own home, I’d adopt a similar cat.
In the previous summer, I bought my flat in London and was prepared to adopt. I discovered Simba via Cats Protection, a charity devoted to aiding homeless animals. The cat Simba caught my eye within minutes, and I couldn’t say the reason behind it. Maybe it was the lasting of my love for Pippa. The website stated her age as 27, which I thought at first was a mistake and believed it should be 17. However, when informed she was available for adoption at 27, I immediately adopted her.
Simba is a small indoor cat who looks for attention. She’s extremely friendly and will immediately settle on anyone’s lap. The balcony is her favorite spot, especially on sunny days. She sticks to a regular schedule: rising at 6 am for breakfast, napping, awakening for afternoon treats, and then more naps. She has particular toys she enjoys. Once I’m in bed, she climbs onto my chest and then sleeps off on my lap, later relocating near my feet for the rest of the night.
One day, I learned that Simba was the world’s oldest living cat when someone from Cats Protection informed me. The charity had obtained the vet’s records proving her birth in December 1995. I was amazed, yet didn’t expect the high level of that attention. Guinness World Records visited to take photos, and a week later, images of Simba and me were widespread, encouraging many heartwarming responses.

【答案】
The sudden fame brought by Simba led to a variety of activities. Seized by a sense of excitement and crazy enthusiasm, many media reporters were eager to interview me and feature Simba, hoping to make it spread wider and farther. There were requests for photos and stories about her daily life, which they thought were rewarding and inspiring. People from different parts of the world were fascinated by her story and shared their own experiences with cats. I also received an invitation to participate in an event with the aim of improving senior cats’ welfare, where I shared Simba’s story to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of senior cats.
After the event to help senior cats, however, she was overwhelmed by too much attention. Therefore, I decided to give Simba a peaceful life, politely declining most of the media requests and focusing on giving Simba a quiet and comfortable environment. I made sure she had her own space to rest and play, spending more time just playing with her, which made her feel loved and secure. With Simba’s well-being becoming my top priority, I intended to live the rest of her life without any stress. Little by little I found that Simba became more energetic and happier, thus ensuring me that it was a right choice.

I had always thought of my neighborhood as a peaceful and friendly place. However, all that changed when Mr. Thompson moved in next door. He was a middle-aged man who seemed to have a rather strange lifestyle.
At first, I didn’t pay much attention to him. But one day, I noticed that his car was always parked in a way that blocked part of my driveway. It was really inconvenient, especially when I was in a hurry to go to work or pick up my kids from school. I politely asked him to be more careful with his parking, but he just gave me a cold look and said he would do so as he was pleased. This made me get cross with him.
As time went by, more problems arose. Mr. Thompson had a big dog that barked loudly day and night. I could barely have a sound sleep, and my kids were also disturbed by the noise. I tried to talk to him about the dog, but he refused to listen. He even accused me of being too sensitive.
One evening, I came home from a long-day work, extremely worn out. Just as I was about to park my car, I found that Mr. Thompson’s car was once again blocking my driveway. I was so frustrated that I knocked on his door forcefully. After seemed a long time, the door opened. There stood Mr. Thompson with an indifferent look on his face. Words were exchanged, and both of us were angry. We had a heated argument. He even slammed the door shut right in front of me. After that, we didn’t talk to each other for weeks. My once proud and friendly neighborhood ties are gone.
One day, as I was mowing the lawn(修剪草坪)in my garden, I saw Mr. Thompson struggling to carry a heavy box along his driveway.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
It seemed that he was about to drop it. I hesitated for a moment, recalling all the unpleasant experiences I had with him. A part of me felt that he deserved to struggle after how rudely he had treated me. But as I watched him wobble under the weight of the box, his face tense with effort, another part of me felt guilty for just standing there. I had always believed in kindness, yet here I was, debating whether to help a neighbor in need. Taking a deep breath, I set aside my pride and walked over. “Let me help you.” I said, reaching for the box. He looked at me, surprised, but after a brief pause, he nodded silently, and together we carried it inside.
As we were standing in his living room, Mr. Thompson broke the ice. He let out a sigh and, in a softer tone than I had ever heard from him, admitted that he hadn’t meant to be rude before. Recovering from surgery had left him frustrated and short-tempered, and he realized now how inconsiderate he had been. Hearing this, my frustration melted away. I admitted that I had judged him too quickly. As we talked, the tension between us faded, replaced by a quiet understanding. From that day on, our relationship changed—we weren’t just neighbors anymore but two people willing to give each other a second chance.

Mr. Whiteside was more than a regular teacher; he belonged to those rare educators who truly loved teaching. His joy spread through his smile as he stood by the geometry blackboard, showing his passion for plane geometry (平面几何) . I was a quiet, shy student who rarely spoke up—never causing trouble or drawing attention. Yet in his class, plane geometry unexpectedly became my favorite subject. Through his lively teaching, the clear logic of geometric principles quietly awakened interest in my usually silent heart.
Toward the end of the year, Mr. Whiteside wanted to check our knowledge of geometry and gave us 25 true/ false questions—a nationally standardized test. The test presented each problem with a conclusion shown. If we could prove the result using rules we learnt in math class, the answer was true. If it couldn’t be proved, it was false.
I quickly finished 24 problems. However, number 17 seemed to be a great challenge. I knew deep down that I had the ability to prove its truth, but the exact approach was not immediately obvious. Finally, I spent 30 minutes working on that proof until it was completed. Satisfied, I marked the question true and handed in the completed test.
The following day, when the results came back, my score was an impressive 96, signaling a solid grasp of the subject. However, to my surprise and disappointment, number 17 was marked as incorrect. It was a blow to my confidence, but I couldn’t ignore the efforts I had put into that problem. I clearly remembered that I had racked my brain to cover my page with related lines, figures and formulas until the proof was there at last.
When Mr. Whiteside asked if there were any questions, for the first time, gathering all my courage, I raised my hand and spoke up, “The correct answer to number 17 is true!”
Instead of arguing that this was a nationally standardized test, Mr. Whiteside did the most powerful thing I have ever seen a teacher do.

Para. 2 From that day in his geometry class, something changed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Nodding smilingly, he held out his chalk to me in front of the class. Hesitantly, I walked to the blackboard to show my proof to the class. My hands trembled slightly as I sketched the geometric figures with chalk, but Mr. Whiteside’s reassuring smile gave me the confidence to continue. My voice grew steadier as I connected related lines, cited formulas, and explained each step logically. The classroom fell silent except for the rhythmic tapping of chalk. When I finished, Mr. Whiteside studied the board intently, his eyes tracing every line. Suddenly, he clapped — a sharp, triumphant sound—and declared, “Flawless!” The class erupted in applause.
From that day in his geometry class, something changed. I started participating more in class discussions and became more willing to share my ideas with others. Mr. Whiteside’s trust in my reasoning had ignited a quiet confidence that transcended geometry, transforming my shyness into thoughtful participation. Looking back, I realized true education isn’t about standardized answers, but about nurturing courage to think, question, and prove the truth. Mr. Whiteside didn’t just teach geometry; he taught me how to make silence speak and doubts shine. His impact on my life has been immeasurable, and I will forever be grateful for the lesson he taught me that day.

One of my teachers once asked my class what our favorite memory was. She was asking for the moment in which “you felt the best, like you had the world in the palm of your hand.” Some described grand awards; others described winning a tournament. But I felt the best when I first learned how to ride my bike at the age of seven.
Actually, when I was born, my brother was a junior student at school, so there seemed to be a generation gap between us. In his eyes, maybe I was too little to understand him or too young to share his sadness or happiness.
However, I hero-worshipped him. I was so curious about his world that I couldn’t wait to inquire about his school life the moment he came back home. “I am so occupied with my assignment. Can’t you wait…?” he often responded like that. Many times, I even wanted to literally follow my brother, sobbing every time I was prevented from hanging around with him. “I was an annoyance to him.” I murmured sadly.
Later, I stopped trying to impress him and learned to be totally indifferent. Perhaps the silent treatment would get more attention. I was wrong. We soon fell into a sad pattern—I avoided him, he ignored me, and deep inside, it hurt. Indifferent or hostile, he was only a brother in name. I believed we would forever be apart, two housemates without conversation, two strangers without warmth. I gradually assumed that my big brother didn’t show any concern for me at all. My little heart got broken.
But the tide was turning last year. I got a bright-red bike as a birthday gift, but mom was too busy with endless work and had no time to teach me. Of course, even though I was eager to learn, I was reluctant to beg my big brother to teach me, so I decided to teach myself to ride, a little bit each day, but in vain. On that fateful day, it was no different. I was coming to the end of my daily one-hour torture, and I was so frustrated that I threw my bike aside and began to cry.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I guess that was what caused my brother to come outside. I turned my face away, fearing he would tease me. Unexpectedly, he gently picked my bike up and gestured me over, “Get on it.” His determined look smoothed away my doubts. As he gripped the back seat, I got on the bike, took a deep breath and started to pedal, holding tightly onto the handlebars. During the whole process, we didn’t talk much. He simply offered a few necessary instructions when needed. But never once did he shout at me, nor did he let me fall. His patient teaching proved efficient, and I gradually got the hang of riding.
An hour later, I was showing of my riding skill to my mom. She was amazed to see me riding steadily around the yard. While sharing my learning experience with her in excitement, I noticed my brother standing at a distance, smiling at me. I cast him a grateful look and he nodded and then walked back into the house. From that day on, the sad pattern between us began to change. There were occasional conversations between us, filled with less embarrassment but increasing concern. I could feel a different kind of brotherly relationship slowly developing between us. I would always treasure that day as my favorite memory, the moment when I felt the best.

Mary watched as students crowded around a notice announcing that the school’s radio station was looking for a second host. Butterflies filled her stomach—she had always dreamed of becoming a campus host.
The radio station was a big deal: it aired music, school announcements, and entertaining shows that everyone tuned into during lunch breaks. Olivia, the current host, was confident and talented, earning widespread admiration. In contrast, Mary was naturally shy, and speaking in front of others made her nervous. Still, she decided to give it a try, even as a classmate remarked, “You? You can barely read aloud in class without stumbling (磕磕绊绊)!”
Not discouraged, Mary practiced every evening by reading aloud from her textbooks. At first, she stumbled over her words, but gradually her reading grew smoother and her pronunciation clearer. She even borrowed books on public speaking from the library to learn vocal techniques. While her classmates chatted and laughed, she quietly absorbed every detail, determined to build her skills.
The day of the interview finally arrived. Holding the cold microphone, Mary felt her hands grow sweaty. She read the required texts perfectly—rehearsed (排练) thousands of times—but she struggled during the improvised (即兴的) part.
“Sir, I’ve been practicing for months, and I’m willing to work hard to learn,” she begged.
Mr. Carter smiled gently and said, “I appreciate your determination and your excellent reading. But during a live broadcast, anything can happen, and you need to draw your audience’s attention with genuine emotion rather than simply reading from a script.”
That day, no one passed the interview; everyone left except Mary. Lost in thought, she realized, “The problem isn’t with my pronunciation or reading…” It suddenly struck her that she could join the radio team in a supporting role to learn what it truly takes to be a host.

【答案】
She asked Mr. Carter for permission and began by taking on small tasks. Organizing scripts, preparing playlists and setting the facilities, Mary threw herself into these tasks, treating each one as an opportunity to learn. During breaks, she observed Olivia’s hosting techniques—how she handled technical issues and managed to make the audience feel excited and engaged. When no one was around, she would practice, pretending to host her own show, announcing imaginary school news, reciting poems, or introducing songs, just like Olivia did. As days turned into weeks, her notebook was filled with her thoughts and reflections. Mary felt more confident, and she hoped she could finally share her voice with the school.
Then one day, Mr. Carter rushed in with unexpected news: Olivia had suddenly fallen ill. Mary stood up, her palms sweating but voice steady. “I’ve learned a lot these days. May I try?” The studio fell silent. Mr. Carter studied her determined face and nodded. Holding the cold mic tightly, Mary’s clear voice flowed through speakers. She perfectly reported the news that day, played up beat music, and even shared fun stories about their school’s history. Students paused their sandwiches, recognizing the new voice. By broadcast end, the radio office buzzed with approval. Mr. Carter smiled, “Seems we already have our second host.” Mary was still holding the mic, which wasn’t cold anymore, but held the warmth of every host who’d ever panicked, triumphed, and grown here—including her.

I really loved school, but since Maggie had transferred in, Elliott Elementary had become an uncomfortable place. At approximately five eight inches, Maggie was the tallest in our fifth-grade class and actually taller than all the students in the school. Despite her frightening height, Maggie’s attitude was the real problem. She teased everyone, from helpless third-graders to boys in gym class. Many students secretly remarked that Maggie was all talk and no action, but I was doubtful and cautiously avoided her attention. However, all changed when I went to school one morning with a new hairstyle.
It all started when my best friend, Jaime, said my hair looked nice. I sensed Maggie’s sharp look, which made me uncomfortable — but I remained focused on my math worksheet. At noon, in the cafeteria, Maggie walked by and said, “Nice braid (辫子). Someone might cut it off.” What really made me very worried was when Maggie moved her fingers like scissors. I was scared, but what really sent me into a panic was when Maggie moved her fingers to imitate a pair of scissors in motion. My stomach dropped to my knees, and I immediately came up with a plan — hiding in the bathroom after school to avoid meeting Maggie on the way home.
As soon as I got home, I told my mother about it uneasily. “Mom, Maggie Jordan wants to cut off my braid,” I said, tears welling up in my eyes. My mother looked at me with concern, saying, “She’s a bully. She takes pleasure in scaring others. Don’t be afraid of her. If she sees that you’re not scared, she’ll stop. I’ll bet she’s like everybody else. Maybe she just wants to fit in but doesn’t know how.” I rolled my mother’s words around in my head. She did have a valid point. Maggie wasn’t so great at making friends. Realizing Maggie might just be a regular fifth-grader longing for friendship beneath her tough appearance, I decided to see if I could befriend her.

【答案】
The next day at noon, I spotted Maggie sitting in a corner of the cafeteria. Drawing a deep breath and gathering all my courage, I approached Maggie inch by inch. I resolved to take an even bolder step and extended my genuine invitation. “Maggie, there’s a basketball game after school. Would you like to join us?” I asked in a tentative tone. Actually, I was more proud of myself for reaching out than nervous. Maggie looked at me with a frown, yet, to my surprise, she didn’t reject me. Instead, she gave me a smile and nodded YES.
My schoolmates were shocked to see Maggie and I show up in the gym. They had no idea at all how and why I had managed to bring Maggie here. Sensing their confusion, I smiled and presented her to everyone. At first, the atmosphere was a little tense. As the activity progressed, we gradually began to relax. It was Maggie’s team spirit and creativity that won our admiration for her completely. Seeing Maggie and the schoolmates playing joyfully, I came to understand that behind her tough outside was a regular fifth-grader who wanted nothing but to be accepted.

On Sunday, Mike and his mother Rose went to Grandma Alondra’s house for lunch. Alondra had prepared Mike’s favorite meal. “Mike’s school prom (舞会) is approaching, Mum,” Rose told Alondra. “Do you still have that tailor’s contact who owned that old shop in town? I want to get a suit tailored for Mike. ” “Oh! I do! ” Alondra laughed. “So, Mike, who’s going to be your date? ” she asked. “Nobody. I haven’t found anyone. So, I might not go, ” Mike said, his eyes fixed on his phone.
Alondra said, “You kids are so lucky to have the prom and everything. I’ve never gone to one! ” “Really, Mum? ” Rose asked with a surprised look. “Well, yes. But that’s an old, old story! Let’s not go there, ” Alondra said. “The thing is, Mike, you should definitely go and have a good time. ”
It was then that Rose had an idea. She asked Mike to take Alondra as his date to the prom. Mike disliked the idea. As a teenager, and as the most popular boy at school, he didn’t want to take his grandmother to the prom. He was afraid the other students would laugh at him. However, he couldn’t find a reason to turn this down. Not a single one. Most importantly, he loved Alondra.
So, on the afternoon of prom day, Mike and Rose drove to Alondra’s house. When the older woman opened her door to Mike in a suit, she smiled. “Oh! Look how beautiful you look, darling!” she said. Rose nudged (用肘轻推) Mike. “Thank - thanks, Gran,” he said with a sigh (叹气) . “Will you, um, be my date tonight? I want to make your dream come true. . . I want to take you to the prom.”
Alondra was both surprised and excited. While she didn’t want to go, Rose had persuaded her that it would be a great bonding (联络感情的) time for her and Mike. So, Alondra put on her finest dress and went to the prom with Mike.

【答案】
As Mike walked into the school hall with his grandmother, the whole place fell silent. As all eyes locked onto him in disbelief, Mike could practically feel the weight of their stares. There was laughter in the air, but he did his best to brush it off. Still, he couldn’t shake off the embarrassment. Then, a girl’s voice cut through the tension: “Isn’t it kind of cool that Mike brought his grandmother?” Another agreed, “Yeah, it’s sweet.” And when one girl approached Alondra and praised her dress, Alondra felt a rush of warmth fill her heart.
Seeing Alondra was welcomed, Mike was relieved, and soon the party got started. Alondra turned out to be a star on the dance floor, even challenging some of the teenagers. She and Mike teamed up for the fun games, defeating everyone! She also shared a dance with the school director. As they headed home, Alondra couldn’t contain her excitement: “This is so much fun, Mike! Thanks for bringing me. It’s the best, best day of my life!” Seeing her bright smile, Mike realized he’d made the right call. Making your grandparents happy is the least you can do.
