When I was a teenage boy, I helped out at my parents’ furniture store in a charming New England town. The store was known for its wide range of products. One summer holiday, I was busy assisting customers to find what they needed. I always greeted them warmly at the entrance, and customers appreciated it as excellent service. I also assisted them to carry heavy things to their cars, but my parents strictly instructed me not to accept tips or anything else.
One day, an elderly lady visited the store. At first sight, I was drawn to her. She was neatly(整洁地) dressed and had a graceful presence, looking polite and friendly. She lived in a senior citizen apartment nearby and wanted to buy some chairs for her garden. After a short search, I found some chairs that met her needs. She bought two chairs and asked if I could help send them to her home just a stone’s throw away. Recognizing her old age, I agreed and carried the chairs to her building.
Upon arrival, she welcomed me warmly and showed me where to place the chairs. Before I could thank her for shopping in my parents’ store, she shocked me by placing a handful of candy in my hand. Then, to my amazement, she gave me an educational book. I politely rejected it, explaining that I couldn’t accept any presents. However, she put the book in my hand and said with a smile,” If your parents don’t want you to have this, just don’t tell them. Let me tell them instead.” We both laughed, and I thanked her sincerely. I decided to follow her advice, and she told my parents that she had given me a book as a reward for my hard work. With the book, I learned a lot and started my lifelong love for reading.
Reflecting on this experience, I often think of the elderly lady and hope she will live a joyful life surrounded by loved ones forever. Her generosity and humor have left a lasting impression on me.

Studies have shown that writing by hand can have enormous (极大的) beneficial impacts in terms of memory, brain development, and even the quality of writing itself.
Some might say that handwriting has become a dying art since the advent of the typewriter in the mid 1880s, even more so due to computers. In fact, nowadays, some schools in the United States no longer require teaching handwriting as a part of the main courses. However, despite the sense that writing on paper is out of fashion, it actually has a number of very important strengths.
Writing by hand is not only important for language processing and memory but it is also important for mental development. In learning to write by hand, the human brain must combine feeling, movement control, and thinking. For whatever reason, it does not do so when learning to type.
Writing by hand is good for mental health, and there are some studies that can prove it. Writing on paper can help students recall material better than typing on a keyboard. Similarly, a study from 2014 shows that compared to writing by hand, taking notes on a laptop results in a less deep absorption of the learned material. This is because when using a laptop, students will often type out lectures word for word instead of processing information and rewording it in their own language.
These advantages actually translate to how you recall the information. In this case, writing by hand instead of typing also helps students do better on exams. Children write longer and more complex essays when they are writing by hand, compared with using a keyboard. Children usually do better writing with a pen when they write essays. They write more and faster.
The next time you want to sit down to write an email to a loved one, why not try writing a handwritten letter instead? It can be more beneficial to your brain. Plus, the personal touch of a handwritten letter can make your message even more special and memorable.
8. What does the underlined word “advent” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Rent. B. Request. C. Alarm. D. Appearance.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about handwriting?
A. Its advantages. B. Its types. C. Its development. D. Its requirements.
10. What happens when students use a laptop instead of a pen to take notes?
A. They recall more words.
B. They do better in writing essays.
C. They are less confident about their exams.
D. They have a lower understanding of the material.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To make a suggestion. B. To express thanks.
C. To honour loved ones. D. To share a personal experience.
D
The average adults in the UK spend nearly two hours daily on social media, while younger users may spend up to five hours. Internet platforms (平台) attract users by using always-changing content. Recent research reveals their bodies physically react when using these platforms.
Some researchers observed 54 young adults surfing the Internet normally for 15 minutes on their phones. Special equipment measured their heart activity and sweating response which help the researchers understand their emotional states. The participants first read a news article on their phones before changing to social media. Compared to reading news, the use of social media caused slower heart rates combined with greater sweating response. Previous studies show this pattern occurs when people become deeply focused on emotionally meaningful content — a mix of excitement and total mental involvement (参与).
Importantly, this reaction wasn’t caused by phone use itself, but specifically by social media interaction. The most surprising result came when the researchers asked users to stop using social media and return to news reading. Instead of calming down, the participants showed increased physical reactions — faster heart rates and greater sweating response.
Why did this happen? Emotional surveys provided clues. The participants reported feeling stressed and anxious when stopping social media use, even expressing a strong wish to return to it. These reactions are similar to the discomfort people experience when suddenly stopping addictive things. Our study, however, doesn’t confirm true addiction. All participants showed similar physical reactions regardless of their self-reported social media habits. This suggests social media’s attraction lies in its ability to provide powerful rewards (奖励) through features like personalized video streams that keep users endlessly involved.
Too much use of social media can be harmful to youths’ well-being. Earlier research shows people primarily use social media to satisfy basic human needs for connection and acceptance. These needs can be met through real-world interactions. Most of us can reduce social media use without major life changes because we can satisfy social needs through other methods like face-to-face conversations.
12. What did the researchers use special equipment to do?
A. Change the content of social media.
B. Understand the function of social media.
C. Measure the participants’ physical signs.
D. Control the participants’ emotional states.
13. What happened when the participants were asked to stop using social media?
A. They kept extremely calm. B. Their sweating response increased.
C. Their heart rates stayed the same D. They wished to continue reading news.
14. What can we learn about social media from paragraph 4?
A. It has no impact on users’ emotions.
B. It attracts users’ involvement through rewards.
C. It causes true addiction in all participants.
D. It leads to all participants’ different physical responses.
15. What is the author’s attitude to young people’s using social media?
A. Unconcerned. B. Positive. C. Opposed. D. Curious.

Emma is a teacher. She is 42 years old and lives a simple and regular life. Every day, she teaches at school and takes care of her family after work. Although her life is stable, deep inside, Emma always has a desire to challenge herself and try something she has never done before.
One day, Emma’s son, Jay, came home excitedly with a flyer (宣传单) in his hand. “Mom, our school is having a parent-child mountain climbing competition, and I signed up!” Jay said with excitement.
Emma smiled and nodded, but she felt a bit uneasy inside. She hadn’t done any hard exercise for a long time, let alone a mountain climbing competition. However, Jay’s eyes were full of expectation, and Emma couldn’t say no.
“Please, Mom! Don’t refuse to do it. I know you can do it!” Jay looked at Emma seriously, his eyes showing firmness.
Emma was surprised. She never thought she would join in a mountain climbing competition, but Jay’s words gave something in her heart. “I know you can do it” reminded her of what she often said to her students in class. She realized that if she didn’t believe in herself, how could she encourage her students?
So, Emma decided to take the challenge. She made a training plan, running every morning and doing strength training at the gym every evening. At first, her body was not used to it, and she often felt very tired. But whenever she wanted to give up, Jay’s words would echo in her ears, “I know you can do it!”
Months later, the day of the mountain climbing competition finally arrived. That morning, the sky was blue, and the sun was shining. Emma, Jay, and the other participants stood at the foot of the mountain. Her legs were shaking a bit, but her eyes were firm.

Writing by hand is not only important for language processing and memory, but it is also important for mental development. In learning to write by hand, the human brain must combine feeling, movement control, and thinking. For whatever reason, it does not do so when learning to type.
Writing by hand is good for mental health and there are some studies that can prove it.
D They have a lower understanding of the material.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To make a suggestion. B. To express thanks.
C. To honour loved ones. D. To share a personal experience.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. A

【10题详解】

The average adults in the UK spend nearly two hours daily on social media, while younger users may spend up to five hours. Internet platforms (平台) attract users by using always-changing content. Recent research reveals their bodies physically react when using these platforms.
Some researchers observed 54 young adults surfing the Internet normally for 15 minutes on their phones. Special equipment measured their heart activity and sweating response, which help the researchers understand their emotional states.
B. Positive. C. Opposed. D. Curious.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. B 15. C

【答案】参考范文:
With the sound of a whistle, the competition began. Emma climbed with the crowd, her breathing becoming heavy, and her clothes soaked with sweat. But she never stopped. Whenever she felt tired, she would think of Jay’s trusting eyes and her own words of encouragement to her students. As she climbed, she met other parents who were also struggling but determined. They encouraged each other, sharing water and snacks. Emma felt a sense of community and support, which made her journey a little easier.
In the end, Emma reached the top of the mountain. Jay ran over excitedly and hugged her tightly. “Mom, you did it!” Jay’s face was full of pride. Emma smiled, her heart full of emotion. She understood that this climb was not only a physical challenge but also a spiritual one. She learned to believe in herself and not to back down in the face of difficulties. And all of this was thanks to Jay’s simple but powerful words, “I know you can do it!”
