One wet November evening in the late 1960s, a married couple named Maurice and Maralyn Bailey — he a hot-metal typesetter, she a tax officer — hit on the idea of escaping their dull, suburban lives by sailing to New Zealand. With the proceeds from the sale of their Derby bungalow, they bought a 31-foot Bermuda boat, which they named Auralyn (a combination of their names). They finally set sail across the Atlantic in June 1972 — having decided against buying a radio transmitter (信号发射机), as Maurice wanted to sail “by his wits and the stars”.
All went well for the first nine months, but then one morning, 300 miles east of the Galápagos, a 40-foot whale rose up under their boat, and cracked a hole in its hull. As Sophie Elmhirst relates in her “superb” debut, Maurice and Maralyn, the couple grabbed a few essentials and climbed onto an inflatable raft (充气筏) from which they watched Auralyn being “silently swallowed”. On this inadequate vessel — too small for either of them to lie down in — they would spend the next 117 days.
At the heart of Maurice and Maralyn is an “astonishing” tale of endurance. Once the couple’s food ran out, they survived in the raft by eating raw sea turtles and small sharks, caught with a fishing rod made from safety pins and cord. Dysentery (痢疾), dehydration and near-starvation followed. While Maurice, a “glass-half-empty type of man”, quietly resigned himself to dying, Maralyn remained optimistic, which sparked Maurice’s will to live. The couple were eventually picked up by a South Korean ship passing by.
Along with its “man-versus-the-elements survival aspect”, Elmhirst’s book is “also a love story”, said Francesca Angelini in The Sunday Times. She traces the couple’s marriage — both how it led them into their Pacific adventure, and how it was changed by what they went through. It’s a remarkable story that had been all but forgotten.
24. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “proceeds” in paragraph 1?
A. Purchases. B. Expenses.
C. Gains. D. Contracts.
25. What do we know about the couple’s sail?
A. They used a radio transmitter for the first nine months.
B. They abandoned the raft damaged by a whale.
C. Starvation followed when the boat sank.
D. Survival skills contributed to their survival.
26. What was Maurice like according to paragraph 3?
A. Pessimistic. B. Ambitious.
C. Modest. D. Unconfident.
27. What kind of writing is the text?
A. A news report. B. A book review.
C. A journal. D. A biography.

If you enjoy goofing around and annoying your loved ones, you’re not alone: Four kinds of great apes have been found to engage in playful teasing. Great apes are a family of primates (灵长目动物) that are very closely related to humans, so this discovery could shed light on how a sense of humor and playfulness emerged in people.
The new study focused on chimpanzees, bonobos, western and eastern gorillas, and Sumatran orangutans. These apes were “excellent candidates” for this study because they “engage in social play, show laughter, and display relatively sophisticated understandings of others’ expectations,” said Isabelle Laumer, the study’s lead author.
The researchers watched videos of 34 apes living in zoos. They looked for examples of teasing behavior, defined as an ape (the “teaser”) trying to provoke a response in another specific individual (the “target”). In 75 hours of video, they found 142 examples of playful teasing. All four kinds of apes engaged in the behavior. Examples included poking another ape, pulling on their hair, or waving in the middle of their field of vision. If there was no response to the action, the teaser would keep trying to provoke the target into responding.
The animals typically engaged in the behaviors when they were calm and relaxed, indicating that their actions were not meant to be aggressive. In most cases, a juvenile ape was teasing an older adult, which is similar to the way human children tease others.
Discovering teasing in great apes suggests that the basic foundations in the brain for this behavior first appeared in an ancestor common to humans and these great apes at least 13 million years ago. Laumer hopes this study will inspire further research into playful teasing in animals, which could lead to a better understanding of where this behavior comes from. “We also hope that this study raises awareness of the similarities we share with our closest relatives and the importance of protecting these endangered animals,” she said.
28. Why were the four kinds of apes chosen as excellent candidates?
A. They are better than other apes. B. They are very intelligent.
C. They have a sense of playfulness. D. They are closely related to humans.
29. What can we learn about the apes in the study?
A. Young apes always teased the elders.
B. Their teasing meant no harm to others.
C. The teaser stopped teasing if the target didn’t respond.
D. Their behavior often involved unexpected actions.
30. How did Laumer probably find the study?
A. Helpful. B. Regretful. C. Fruitless. D. Ground-breaking.
31. What’s a suitable title for the text?
A. Apes Share Similar Social Behavior with Human Children.
B. Exploring Apes’ Sense of Humor Helps the Study of Brain.
C. Understanding Apes’ Teasing Aids in Their Conservation.
D. Apes’ Teasing Offers Insights into the Roots of Human Playfulness.

A new study published in Science provides insights into how plants evolved prickles (刺) so many times: Over and over again, each species took advantage of a single gene. Zachary Lippman, the study’s main author, got curious about prickles as he studied a group of crops that includes potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants. While the crops are all prickle-free, some of their wild relatives are covered in the little prickles. “Early farmers must have eradicated the prickles from the wild plants as they started using them as crops,” Lippman said.
The loss of prickles led Lippman to wonder how they had evolved in the first place. It’s likely that prickles emerged in many plants as a defense against animals that would consume them, but prickles can serve other purposes, too. For example, some wild plants use them to attach their seeds onto passing animals.
To understand more about plants and prickles, Lippman and his team hybridized (杂交) one variety of domesticated eggplant with its wild, prickly relative. Some of the hybrids had lots of prickles, while others had none. After running the same experiment on two other kinds of eggplants and comparing their DNA, the team found a specific type of LOG gene, carried only by prickly plants, was responsible for prickles in the wild plants.
It might seem unbelievable that getting rid of a LOG gene could take away prickles without harming the eggplant as a whole. It turns out that plants have evolved many copies of LOG genes over millions of years. One copy of the LOG gene evolved in the wild ancestors of eggplants to make prickles, while the other types went on with their original job of helping the plants grow.
The new findings could help scientists transform wild plants into domesticated crops, Lippman said, He tested this possibility on a wild Australian plant, which is normally prickly, and after he deleted the LOG gene from its DNA, it became free of prickles.
32. What made Lippman study prickly plants?
A. All crops are prickle-free.
B. He was curious about evolution.
C. Wild relatives of some crops have prickles.
D. Some wild prickly plants are used as crops.
33. What can be inferred from the findings of Lippman’s team?
A. Prickles are related to a certain gene.
B. Only prickly plants carry LOG genes.
C. Domestication affects plants’ growth,
D. Plants’ hybridization increases their size.
34. Why does removing a LOG gene do no harm to eggplants?
A. They have protective genes.
B. They have good adaptation.
C. LOG gene copies play unimportant roles.
D. LOG gene copies serve varied purposes.
35. What is the significance of the new discovery?
A. Assisting in plants’ survival.
B. Helping increase crop types.
C. Improving crops’ production.
D. Reducing harmful insects to crops.

Two pairs of brown eyes stared eagerly up at me. It was October 2023 and I’d taken my dogs Candy and Tara for a run in woodland near Darwen, Lancashire. I kept an eye on both of them as they played and, when it was time to go, I blew the dog whistle. Candy came bounding up straight away, but Tara was nowhere to be seen.
I called her name, blew the whistle again and kept searching. But she’d completely vanished. There was a scattering of holes in the ground and, knowing that Tara loved rabbit holes, I thought she’d gone down one chasing a bunny!
I called my husband Alistair, who rushed to help me search. Then I called the fire service in case Tara was trapped in one of the holes. I messaged friends too, asking them to post on social media, “These are badger setts (獾穴),” a fireman explained. “They’re protected. I’m afraid we’re not allowed to dig here.”
So instead, we kept searching nearby. When it got to midnight, however, we headed home and my heart sank. We lived five miles away, and I was convinced there was no way Tara could make her way back.
The next day, we returned to where Tara was gone. We left behind a couple of Alistair’s sweatshirts so Tara would recognise our scent. As the days went by, I put my work as a dog groomer on hold to search for Tara. Reports of sightings came to nothing, and Alistair and I did daily shifts outside the badger setts.
Tara loved exploring. “I just couldn’t give up.” Then, on 15 November, 23 days after Tara went missing, Candy and I were walking towards the badger setts when she began sniffing (嗅) the ground and spinning around.

There is evidence that coffee was originally gathered from bushes growing wild in the northeast of Africa. In the beginning of the sixteenth century, it was being bought by traders and people in the Middle East started to use it as a drink. Also, the physicians in the Turkish city of Constantinople believed coffee was healthy and approved its use as a medicine. At the time, instead of drinking coffee at home, people went to coffee houses to drink it. These people, usually men, would meet to drink coffee and chat about issues of the day. In 1623, the then ruler of Constantinople thought it was dangerous for people to share ideas and opinions, so he demanded the destruction of all the coffee houses in the city. After his death, however, many new ones opened, and coffee consumption continued.
In the seventeenth century, coffee drinking spread to Europe. At first, it was for rich people only, for coffee prices were rather high. So how did coffee, a then luxury item, become something that common people could drink daily? Well...

C 25. D 26. A 27. B

根据第一段中“With the proceeds from the sale of their Derby bungalow, they bought a 31-foot Bermuda boat, which they named Auralyn (a combination of their names). (用他们卖掉在德比郡的小平房的proceeds,买了一艘31英尺长的百慕大帆船,并将其命名为“奥拉琳”(取自他们两人名字的组合)。)”可知,此处proceeds指的是卖房的收入,即“收益”,与Gains“收益”意思相符。故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Once the couple’s food ran out, they survived in the raft by eating raw sea turtles and small sharks, caught with a fishing rod made from safety pins and cord. (一旦这对夫妇的食物耗尽,他们就在筏子上靠吃用安全别针和绳子做成的鱼竿捕获的生海龟和小鲨鱼存活下来。)”可知,他们运用自己制作鱼竿捕鱼等生存技能得以存活下来,说明生存技能有助于他们的生存。故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“While Maurice, a “glass-half-empty type of man”, quietly resigned himself to dying, Maralyn remained optimistic, which sparked Maurice’s will to live. (而莫里斯,一个“看事情总往坏处想的人”,默默地听天由命,准备迎接死亡,而玛丽莲却始终保持乐观,这也激发了莫里斯活下去的意志。)” 可知,莫里斯是个悲观的人。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Along with its “man-versus-the-elements survival aspect”, Elmhirst’s book is “also a love story”, said Francesca Angelini in The Sunday Times. (弗朗西丝卡・安杰利尼在《星期日泰晤士报》上称,除了其 “人类与自然环境抗争的生存元素” 之外,埃尔姆赫斯特的这本书 “也是一个爱情故事”。)”可知,本文是对埃尔姆赫斯特所写关于莫里斯和玛丽莲・贝利夫妇海上遇险求生经历书籍的评论。故选B。

C 29. B 30. A 31. D

根据第四段“The animals typically engaged in the behaviors when they were calm and relaxed, indicating that their actions were not meant to be aggressive.(这些动物通常在平静和放松的时候做出这些行为,这表明它们的行为并不是攻击性的)”可知,猿类的戏弄对别人没有伤害。故选B。

C Wild relatives of some crops have prickles.
C 33. A 34. D 35. B

根据第一段中“Zachary Lippman, the study’s main author, got curious about prickles as he studied a group of crops that includes potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants. While the crops are all prickle-free, some of their wild relatives are covered in the little prickles. (该研究的主要作者扎卡里·利普曼在研究包括土豆、西红柿和茄子在内的一组作物时,对刺产生了兴趣。虽然这些作物都没有刺,但它们的一些野生近亲植物却布满了小刺。)”可知,利普曼对一些作物的野生近亲植物有刺感到好奇,从而开始研究带刺植物。故选C。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“After running the same experiment on two other kinds of eggplants and comparing their DNA, the team found a specific type of LOG gene, carried only by prickly plants, was responsible for prickles in the wild plants. (在对另外两种茄子进行同样的实验并比较它们的DNA后,研究小组发现了一种特殊的LOG基因,这种基因只存在于带刺植物中,是野生植物长刺的原因。)”可知,利普曼团队的研究发现刺与某种基因有关。故选A。
根据第四段中“It turns out that plants have evolved many copies of LOG genes over millions of years. One copy of the LOG gene evolved in the wild ancestors of eggplants to make prickles, while the other types went on with their original job of helping the plants grow. (事实证明,植物在数百万年的进化过程中产生了许多LOG基因的拷贝。茄子野生祖先体内的一个LOG基因拷贝进化出了刺,而其他类型的LOG基因拷贝则继续发挥着帮助植物生长的原始作用。)”可知,移除一个LOG基因对茄子没有伤害是因为LOG基因拷贝具有不同的功能。故选D。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The new findings could help scientists transform wild plants into domesticated crops, Lippman said, He tested this possibility on a wild Australian plant, which is normally prickly, and after he deleted the LOG gene from its DNA, it became free of prickles. (利普曼说,这些新发现可能有助于科学家将野生植物转化为栽培作物。他在一种通常有刺的澳大利亚野生植物上测试了这种可能性,当他从它的DNA中删除LOG基因后,它就不再有刺了。)”可知,新发现的意义在于有助于增加作物种类。故选B。

【答案】Dear friends,
Nowadays, intelligent translation tools are commonly used by us students in the English learning process. Many of us turn to them while doing homework or reading English articles.
Undoubtedly, they bring great convenience, helping us quickly understand the meaning of unfamiliar words and sentences. However, relying too much on them may weaken our language sense and independent thinking ability.
Therefore, we should use them rationally. For example, we can use them to check the translations after trying on our own first. Only in this way can we make the best use of these tools.
Thank you!

I drove straight to our vet (兽医), who said Tara was so weak.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I felt a ray of hope and called out, “Tana?” Dry leaves crunched under my feet. Candy was digging at a pile of sticks when I heard a soft whine from the badger hole. My heart jumped — a muddy paw stuck out! “Tara!” I yelled. I pulled away sticks and leaves and found Tara shaking, with her dirty golden fur stuck together. She licked my hand weakly. Immediately Alistair ran over with a blanket. “Silly girl,” he said softly, and then wrapped her cold body. Her tail moved a little against my arm.
I drove straight to our vet, who said Tara twas so weak. Tara’s eyes looked tired in the vet’s bright lights. Her paws were dry and hurt. “She needs water,” the vet said, putting a needle in her leg. I stroked her messy fur and felt her heart beating fast, like a small bird. Tara made a rough sound and pushed her nose into my hands. I cried — I’d waited 23 days! The vet said in a comforting voice, “She’ll be okay, but needs rest.” Just then Candy slid in and lied down next to Tara, wagging her tail in the air.
