My name is Thomas. I come from the UK. I have always been interested in Chinese culture. I started learning Chinese at high school, and I enjoyed it so much that I continued studying it at the University of Leeds. We learnt to speak, as well as to read and write Chinese. Writing was the most challenging for me. We also studied Chinese literature, history, politics and economics. In my third year I spent six months studying in Shanghai. I lived with a Chinese family who spoke almost no English, and my Chinese friends told me I picked up a Shanghai accent!

What are some of the common reasons for foreigners to learn Chinese?
I’m Jenny, from Australia. I try to learn one or two new things every year, otherwise I get bored. This year I decided I would try to learn a little bit of Chinese. So I signed up for an evening course at the local community centre near where I live in Melbourne, Australia. I was pleasantly surprised that speaking was easier than I had expected, and by the end of the course I could say “Hello! My name’s Jenny.”, “How are you?” and other basic information about my job and family in Chinese. However, I still have great difficulty reading Chinese. I’m thinking of signing up for the next course.

What are some of the common reasons for foreigners to learn Chinese?
My name is Pedro. I’m from Argentina. Next year I’m going on a tour of China. I’m visiting the Great Wall in Beijing and the terracotta warriors in Xi’an. So I decided to sign up to learn Chinese through an online course, to help me during my trip. My goodness, Chinese is tough! I think the hardest is the pronunciation. Getting the tones right—that’s so difficult for me! My online tutor is rally friendly and encouraging, though. I still can’t read or write, but I can speak a little. I do wonder whether anyone in China will be able to understand a word I say!
