When 16-year-old Mia stood backstage clutching (紧握) her guitar, her palms were sweaty. She couldn’t hear the audience’s chatter, but she felt the wooden floor vibrate (振动) beneath her feet — a sense that had become her compass in a silent world.
Mia lost 80% of her hearing after a severe fever at 12.Music, once her refuge, seemed an impossible dream until her music teacher Mrs. Carter handed her a guitar. “The vibrations travel through your bones,” Mrs. Carter explained, placing Mia’s fingers on the instrument’s body as she played a vibrating C note. For the first time in years, Mia’s face lit up — she felt the music.
Practicing was tiring. While classmates relied on sound to tune their instruments, Mia memorized string tensions by touch. She pressed her cheek against the guitar’s smooth surface to detect mistakes, her fingertips developing calluses (老茧) thicker than her peers’. During lunch breaks, she’d sit alone in the practice room, repeating degrees of sound until the vibrations recorded themselves in her muscle memory.
The turning point came during a school talent show rehearsal. Mia’s performance of Edelweiss accidentally made two mistakes. Classmate Jake murmured, “What’s the point if she can’t even hear herself?” Mrs. Carter interrupted sharply, “She feels the music deeper than any of you.” That night, Mia stayed late, her guitar playing gently under trembling hands until her peers politely asked her to leave.
On performance night, Mia’s heart raced as she stepped into the spotlight. Closing her eyes, she let her hands dance across the strings. The guitar trembled against her chest like a living thing. When she finished, the hall erupted — not in audible applause, but in stamping feet that sent joyous beatings through the stage. Tears welled up in Mia’s eyes as she bowed, realizing she’d finally bridged the gap between silence and musical team.

Owning a pet, like a dog or cat, especially for five years or longer, may be linked to slower cognitive(认知的)decline in older adults, according to a recently published study.
“Previous studies have suggested that the human-animal bond may have health benefits like decreasing blood pressure and stress,” said study author Tiffany Braley. “Our results suggest pet ownership may also be protective against cognitive decline.”
The study looked at cognitive data from 1,369 older adults with an average age of 65 who had normal cognitive skills at the start of the study. A total of 53% owned pets, and 32% were long-term pet owners — people who owned pets for five years or more. Of the study participants, 88% were white,7% were black, 2% were Hispanic and 3% were of another race. The sampling strategies enhanced result reliability.
Researchers used data from the Health and Retirement Study. In that study, people were given several cognitive tests. Researchers used those cognitive tests to develop a composite(综合的)cognitive score for each person, ranging from zero to 27. The composite score included common tests of subtraction(减法), numeric counting and word recall. Researchers then used participants’ composite cognitive scores and evaluated the associations between years of pet ownership and cognitive function.
Over six years, cognitive scores decreased at a slower rate in pet owners. This difference was the strongest among long-term pet owners. Taking into account other factors known to affect cognitive function, the study showed that long-term pet owners, on average, had a cognitive composite score that was 1.2 points higher compared to non-pet owners. The researchers also found the cognitive benefits associated with longer pet ownership were stronger for black adults, college-educated adults and men.
“As stress can negatively affect cognitive function, the potential stress-reducing effects of pet ownership could provide a logical reason for our findings,” said Braley. “A companion animal can also increase physical activity, which could benefit cognitive health. That said, more research is needed to confirm our results and identify possible reasons for this association.”
8. What’s the finding of Tiffany Braley’s study?
A. Both dogs and cats make perfect pets.
B. The more pets people keep, the better.
C. Owning pets may help keep your brain sharp.
D. Pets reduce stress through companionship bonds.
9 Why were participants chosen from different races?
A. To make research data available.
B. To evaluate the IQ of different races.
C. To classify different personal preferences.
D. To guarantee accurate research findings.
10. What can be concluded from paragraph 5?
A. Longer pet ownership is rewarding.
B. Pets can enable the elderly to live longer.
C. Long-term pet owners are great in leadership.
D. Black college-educated adults unnecessarily need pets.
11. What will be studied in the continued research?
A. Pet types’ health impacts.
B. Age-based benefits of pets.
C. Stress-brain chemistry relationship.
D. Explore the link between findings and causes.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. D

The 21st century has witnessed incomparable progress in space exploration. China’s Chang’e-6 mission, landing on the moon’s far side in 2024, collected rock samples containing rare helium-3, which could drive carbon-free applications in power plants, lunar energy networks, and space travel, with minimal radioactive waste and abundant lunar resources. Meanwhile, NASA’s Artemis program is constructing a lunar base to test technologies like 3D-printed habitats and water recycling systems, essential for future Mars colonization. Private firms also contribute: SpaceX’s Starship reduced launch costs by 70%, enabling universities to deploy mini-satellites for tracking climate change.
A milestone discovery came from Mars. NASA’s Perseverance rover confirmed vast water ice deposits beneath the planet’s surface — critical for producing oxygen and rocket fuel. However, long-term space habitation faces hurdles. Exposure to radiation in space during the 6-month Mars journey could damage astronauts’ DNA, increasing cancer risks. Additionally, over 900,000pieces of space debris(碎片)larger than 1cm orbit Earth, threatening satellites. In 2025, Japan’s JAXA launched a laser-equipped satellite to vaporize(汽化)small debris, while the EU’s ClearSpace-2 mission will use robotic nets to capture large pieces.
Global cooperation accelerates breakthroughs. The China-Russia Lunar Research Station, planned for 2035, will study lunar soil for farming experiments. India’s Aditya-L1 satellite cooperates with NASA to monitor solar storms that damage Earth’s power network. Public engagement grows through initiatives like NASA’s “Mars VR,” allowing students to virtually explore landscapes of Mars and analyze geological data.
Critics question the costs — $150 billion spent annually worldwide — arguing funds should address poverty or climate crises. Yet, space research has boosted life-saving technologies: MRI scanners generated from Apollo-era imaging systems, and water purification methods used in deserts came from spacecraft recycling. As humanity eyes star to star travel, balancing exploration with Earth’s needs will define our universal heritage.
12. What is helium-3’s potential use?
A. Satellite production. B. Clean energy.
C. Medical research. D. Plant farming.
13. Why is Mars’ water ice important?
A. It cools engines. B. It prevents radiation.
C. It attracts tourists. D. It aids space missions.
14. How does Japan deal with space debris?
A. Using robotic nets.
B. Recycling materials.
C. Capturing used satellites.
D. Turning them into watery dust.
15. How is the text organized?
A. Question-explanation-suggestion. B. Theory-practice-evaluation.
C. Achievement-problem-solution. D. Situation-response-result.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. C

Staying Focused: Strategies and Insights
When we were students, many of us were likely told to stop daydreaming and focus. ____16____ However, understanding the causes of distraction and learning how to stay focused can be beneficial. Here are some of the findings that can assist us in this regard.
Scientists have studied what makes us procrastinate and discovered several ways to help us stay “in the zone.” ____17____ Research by Science Focus magazine indicates that silence is ideal for concentration. Alternatively, a gentle background hum or coffee-shop noise can also be quite effective. Additionally, turning off notifications on your phone or even switching it off completely removes a major distraction, enabling us to focus on the task at hand.
Another potential solution for a short attention span is brain training. Psychologists are increasingly interested in our ability to knuckle down. They have explored what we can change within our minds to enhance concentration. An article for BBC Future by Caroline Williams states that “Attention Researcher Nilli Lavie of University College London has found that making a task more visually demanding... takes up more processing power and leaves the brain nothing left to process distractions.” ____18____
There are also more practical tips for keeping your mind focused. ____19____ You could also find a workspace where you’re not tempted to do other things or chew some gum! It’s possible that the movement in your mouth occupies parts of the brain that might otherwise get distracted.
____20____ If we were constantly focused, we might overlook potential threats in our environment. Distraction is vital for survival.
A. Thus, keeping your mind occupied might be the key.
B. One of the most apparent methods is to get rid of noise.
C. In adult life, maintaining concentration remains a challenge.
D. You may find it tough to stay focused when you are in the office.

Reading broadens our perspectives, enhances our empathy, and sharpens our critical thinking. It is a bridge that connects us to different cultures, ideas, and experiences.
For me, reading has been a source of inspiration and growth. It has taught me resilience through stories of perseverance and opened my eyes to the beauty of diversity. Every book I read leaves a lasting impression, shaping my values and guiding my actions.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Thirteen-year-old Lily had always been curious about the old jar on her father’s desk. It was a plain clay pot with faded paint, its edge darkened by decades of fingerprints. Her bus driver father polished it every Sunday afternoon, his rough hands moving with hearty care. “One day you’ll understand,” he’d say when she asked about its purpose, the bus petrol scent clinging to (附着) his uniform. Mom’s hospital bills emptied the jar five years ago, which made Lily’s throat tighten.
One rainy afternoon, while cleaning the living room, Lily’s elbow brushed past the jar. It fell slowly, shining like broken pieces of the moon. Coins and wrinkled bills erupted — over 1,000 dollars! Her fingers shook as she wanted to put the pieces of the jar together, clay dust mixing with tears on her cheeks. Then she found the note beneath the coins: “For Lily’s college fund — never give up dreams.” She made up her mind to buy a jar to store these coins and bills. A new jar would hold more than mere money; it would contain her dreams and the warmth of her father’s silent love.
That evening, light rain painted the streets silver. Outside Mr. Tom’s grocery store, a homeless man huddled (蜷缩) under cardboard, his sign reading: “Need 500 dollars for daughter’s disease.” The man’s socks — one worn and holey, the other mismatched and faded, showed how hard his life was. His cracked lips moved soundlessly, muttering words that never reached passersby. Lily’s fingers brushed the 20 dollars in her pocket. Every penny carried the sweat of her father. The man’s eyes met hers, holding the same desperate light she’d seen in Dad’s eyes during Mom’s final hours. At that moment, the jar’s true lesson revealed itself — not as a container of money, but as something much more important. Lily decided to go back home and get more money to help the poor homeless man.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Holding the money tightly, Lily rushed to the homeless man.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Arriving home, Lily found her father staring at the broken jar’s pieces.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Holding the money tightly, Lily rushed to the homeless man. To her great joy, the homeless man was still there, his face pale under the flashing streetlight. “Please take this,” she whispered, pressing the cash into his trembling hands. His eyes widened. “My daughter…thank you!” he choked out, tears rolling down his cheeks. As Lily walked home, thoughts of her father’s potential anger and disappointment crowded her mind. She knew the education fund was meant for her future, and using it without permission was a huge deal. But saving someone matters more.
Arriving home, Lily found her father staring at the broken jar’s pieces. Plucking up all her courage, she went to her father and tearfully confessed everything. She added that she would work twice as hard to achieve her dreams. To her surprise, her father listened attentively and then smiled warmly. He said, “Your mother would be so proud of you.” At that moment, the girl realized that love and kindness are the most precious “currency”. They not only have the power to change lives but also make the world a much better place, far more valuable than any amount of money set aside for the future.
【解析】

A Both dogs and cats make perfect pets.
B. The more pets people keep, the better.
C. Owning pets may help keep your brain sharp.
D. Pets reduce stress through companionship bonds.
9. Why were participants chosen from different races?

However long-term space habitation faces hurdles.

E. These include making a list or timetable of the tasks you need to do.
F. But according to Science Focus magazine, distraction isn’t entirely negative.
G. It’s important to keep a balance between being focused and allowing some distraction.
