I was always terrible at sports, fearful of being the last one picked for the baseball team in the high school and frightened at the possibility that a ball might come to me and even worse, that I might have to catch it.
So as I held my first son in my arms, I wondered, “In a baseball-loving country where every boy will pick it up, who’s going to teach him how to throw a ball? Who’s going to explain to him the rules of baseball?”
For several years when Will and his younger brother, Tim, were toddlers I could put off the Reckoning Day (清算日) by rolling balls around, inside and out, but I knew that day would eventually come.
Every dad wants to be a hero to his kids, but I didn’t see how I could if I couldn’t show my sons how to hit the ball with a bat. It was at this moment in my parenting that inspiration struck. I chatted with some of the other dads in the neighborhood, the ones who really could be coaches, and suggested we start our own baseball league. “That sounds great, Rick,” they said. “We’d love to coach, but who could organize something like that?” “Well,” I hesitated, “I could try.” Being an organizer may mean taking some phone calls to get a permit for a field or order some uniforms, but that sounded easier to me than explaining the difference between a ball and a strike.
That was the birth of Hudson Cliffs Baseball, now in its 13th straight season. I often see kids in the neighborhood with an “H. C.” on their ball caps. Every time I see them, I want to tell them how it all came about because the first commissioner (行政管理人) of the league was a failure at sports.
Am I a hero to my sons? I don’t know. But guess who is the commissioner of the baseball league at his college? My first born. Like father, like son. Except he can really hit the ball.
4. What can be inferred about the author in paragraph 2?
A. He wanted his sons to be independent. B. He was anxious about his parenting role.
C. He wanted to learn baseball skills for his sons. D. He didn’t think baseball was right for his sons.
5. What did the Reckoning Day mean for the author in paragraph 3?
A. The duty of making his sons love sports. B. The pressure of starting a baseball league.
C. The task of testing his sons’ sportsmanship. D. The responsibility of teaching his sons baseball.
6. Why did the author want to start a baseball league?
A. To challenge the other dads. B. To prove himself to his sons.
C. To build up a name for himself. D. To show his organizational ability.
7. Which of the following best describes Hudson Cliffs Baseball according to the text?
A. Competitive. B. Creative. C. Attractive. D. Selective.

John Griffith Chaney, better known as Jack London, was one of the most popular American authors of his time. Born on January 12th, 1876, in San Francisco, California, London grew up in the working class. He had delivered newspapers, shoveled (铲) coal, worked on a ship, and found employment in a cannery (罐头厂). In his free time, he preferred to stay at libraries, reading novels and travel books.
At the age of 17, London experienced a painful voyage, one in which a typhoon had nearly taken out London and his crew. The adventurer made it home and told his mother what had happened to him. When his mother saw an announcement in one of the local papers for a writing contest, she pushed her son to write down and submit his story. Though armed with just an eighth-grade education, London won first prize and got $25.
For London, the contest was an eye-opening experience and he decided to devote his life to writing short stories. But he had trouble finding willing publishers. After trying to make a living on the East Coast, he returned to California and briefly enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley, before heading north to Canada to seek at least a small fortune in the gold rush happening in the Yukon. By 22, however, London still hadn’t put together much of a living. But this time, he believed that he could make a living as a writer because he felt that he had so many stories to tell. Then in 1899, he began publishing stories in the Overland Monthly.
At the age of 27 London finally found fame. With his novel The Call of the Wild making a great success, he carried on his hard-driving writing style. Later on, he published over 50 books over the last 16 years of his life. Unfortunately, for much of the last decade of his life, London faced many health issues. These included kidney (肾脏) disease, which took his life on November 22nd, 1916.
8. What can we know about Jack London from the first paragraph?
A. He learned to do business. B. He behaved well academically.
C. He had a difficult childhood. D. He was a hardworking author.
9 What made London decide to become a writer?
A. His great imagination. B. His career in California.
C. His experiences in Canada. D. His prize in a competition.
10. After what event did London go to the Yukon?
A. Looking for gold. B. Studying at college.
C. Working in a factory. D. Publishing some stories.
11. What lesson can be concluded from London’s story?
A. Hard work is the key to good life. B. Fame might keep one from succeeding.
C. Education is the passport to the future. D. Success might begin with a difficult life.
D
The use of the Internet in education enables information exchange, improves communication, and advances the frontiers of knowledge. Through platforms that connect teachers and students, anyone can find a community willing to share learning materials. The Internet is the bridge that connects the people who may not have the opportunity to meet in real life, providing a platform for them to learn from each other.
The influence of the Internet on teaching tools is obvious—from desktop computers used in early computer science classes to tablets (平板电脑) in technology lessons about programming (编程). Moreover, the Internet’s footprint in education goes beyond devices; it has changed how students access training resources. Their learning potential is limited only by the time they choose to spend doing online research.
The Internet has been greatly benefiting school students. It increases students’ motivation by offering good access to information that either complements (补充) classroom lessons or introduces new topics for independent learning. It promotes cooperation and improves communication between members of the school community. It also enables remote learning for those who live far from schools or cannot attend in person.
However, increased access to information may expose students to unreliable sources or data, which can lead to misunderstandings of subjects if they are not guided by teachers. Besides, too much Internet use can limit the development of social skills, which may lead to isolation (孤立).
Moreover, the digital divide remains a major concern, as not all students have equal access to the Internet or appropriate devices, which may create educational inequalities. So some students may be left behind if effective solutions are not adopted. Faced with these challenges, schools using technology as their teaching tools must ensure that technology use does not shut any students out and that they provide special monitoring to help learners benefit from technology “without getting lost along the way”.
12. What does the underlined word “footprint” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Device. B. Influence. C. Opportunity. D. Limitation.
13. How does the Internet encourage students to study?
A. By allowing them to study at home. B. By offering new science subjects at school.
C. By providing sufficient learning resources. D. By replacing traditional classroom teaching.
14. What might students’ heavy reliance on the Internet lead to?
A Less social contact. B. Educational inequalities.
C. Having no respect for teachers. D. Raising doubts about data online.
15. Which one could be the best title of the text?
A. Digital divide in education: a major concern B. Digital learning: a global classroom revolution
C. The Internet: both a teaching tool and a source D. The Internet in education: benefits and challenges

It was the early morning of a traditional holiday. Many people had gone back home or gone out to some interesting places to enjoy themselves. The city where I was working is far away from my home, so I felt lonely. The day was just like any other common days for me. I planned to go to the Laundromat (自助洗衣店) to wash clothes.
High up on the wall, where the television was mounted, a news reporter was reporting on the heavy traffic conditions. I headed to a pair of washing machines, passing a few other unlucky, lonely people in the near empty laundromat. For whatever reasons, like me, they didn’t stay together with their family members or go out to enjoy themselves. I looked around and found that there were several adults; everyone was silent and looked unhappy. A mother was washing clothes while her baby was sleeping in a laundry basket. And there was also a man in a blue T-shirt.
When I separated my colored clothes and white clothes, a lady put her clothes into a dryer (烘干机) beside me. Her four kids ran around behind her. They reminded me of the family in that old TV show, The Waltons. I had watched it many times with my mother when I was young.
While I moved my clothes from the washing machine to the dryer the lady’s kids asked her continually, “Can we go to a movie?” The mom sighed and said, “I’ve told you many times. There’s not enough money for that. There are no movies and no snacks.” The air in the laundromat became colder.
I turned back to my dryer. Suddenly a loud noise made me turn around. The four kids were pulling chairs across the floor, setting up rows facing the TV. One of the kids tore a magazine page into squares.

At the age of 27, London finally found fame.

A. Less social contact. B. Educational inequalities.
C. Having no respect for teachers. D. Raising doubts about data online.
15. Which one could be the best title of the text?
A. Digital divide in education: a major concern B. Digital learning: a global classroom revolution
C. The Internet: both a teaching tool and a source D. The Internet in education: benefits and challenges
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文。互联网在教育领域既有促进信息交流等诸多益处,也存在信息不可靠、社交受限及数字鸿沟等挑战。
【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“The influence of the Internet on teaching tools is obvious—from desktop computers used in early computer science classes to tablets (平板电脑) in technology lessons about programming (编程). Moreover, the Internet’s footprint in education goes beyond devices; it has changed how students access training resources.(互联网对教学工具的影响是显而易见的 —— 从早期计算机科学课上使用的台式电脑到编程技术课上使用的平板电脑。此外,互联网在教育领域的footprint超越了设备;它改变了学生获取培训资源的方式)中“Moreover”可知,后面的内容是对前面关于互联网对教育影响的进一步阐述,所以footprint在这里和influence意思相近,意为“影响”。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The Internet has been greatly benefiting school students. It increases students’ motivation by offering good access to information that either complements (补充) classroom lessons or introduces new topics for independent learning.(互联网使在校学生受益匪浅。它通过提供丰富的信息获取途径来提高学生的学习积极性,这些信息既可以补充课堂知识,也可以为自主学习引入新的话题)”可知,互联网通过提供充足的学习资源来鼓励学生学习。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Besides, too much Internet use can limit the development of social skills, which may lead to isolation (孤立).(此外,过度使用互联网会限制社交技能的发展,这可能会导致孤立)”可知,学生过度依赖互联网可能会导致社交接触减少。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段“The use of the Internet in education enables information exchange, improves communication, and advances the frontiers of knowledge.(互联网在教育中的使用促进了信息交流,改善了沟通,并推动了知识的前沿发展)”以及第三段“The Internet has been greatly benefiting school students.(互联网使在校学生受益匪浅)”阐述了互联网在教育中的好处;第四段“However, increased access to information may expose students to unreliable sources or data, which can lead to misunderstandings of subjects if they are not guided by teachers. Besides, too much Internet use can limit the development of social skills, which may lead to isolation (孤立).(然而,信息获取的增加可能会使学生接触到不可靠的信息来源或数据,如果没有老师的指导,这可能会导致对学科的误解。此外,过度使用互联网会限制社交技能的发展,这可能会导致孤立)”和第五段“Moreover, the digital divide remains a major concern, as not all students have equal access to the Internet or appropriate devices, which may create educational inequalities.(此外,数字鸿沟仍然是一个主要问题,因为并非所有学生都能平等地使用互联网或合适的设备,这可能会造成教育不平等)”则指出了互联网在教育中带来的挑战。所以D选项The Internet in education: benefits and challenges(互联网在教育中:好处和挑战)最适合作为文章标题。故选D。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
While I moved my clothes from the washing machine to the dryer, the lady’s kids asked her continually, “Can we go to a movie?” The mom sighed and said, “I’ve told you many times.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
“This ticket is for you,” a kid said, smiling, and pointed at a chair. Before I knew what I was doing, I was seated in the front row looking up at an advertisement on television. The kids invited their mom and other adults but they refused. Then the kids took their places around me. “Shh!” the youngest kid said. “The movie is starting.” I took a look at my dryer, wondering how long this “movie” would take. A familiar piece of music caught my attention.
I found it was a song of The Waltons! The kids probably had no idea what they were watching, but the song slowly attracted other adults in the laundromat. “I just remember I’ve got candy in my car!” the man in the blue T-shirt said, jumping up. “I’ll go grab it.” Not to be outdone, a lady brought in soft drinks from her car. We drank and laughed a lot, while enjoying the TV show. That day, unexpectedly, several strangers became connected and enjoyed a happy holiday.
