A
Lee sat among the books at the library and thought about his group project. They had to turn it in soon, but he hadn’t even started his part! Jack and Claire were in his group. They had worked hard. They were also very smart, and Lee didn’t want them to get a bad grade.
Jack did the report. He wrote a lot of very good sentences and described things clearly and carefully. Claire drew a nice map of the stars. Now, Lee needed to do his part of the project.
“Well, I. suppose I need to start my model,” Lee thought.
Making a model of a planet was really hard. Lee tried to read several books, but he couldn’t understand any of the charts. “We’re going to fail because of me!” Lee said. He put his head down on the table and said, “I wish I could see a planet and an alien, instead of having to read about it!”
Suddenly, he had a great idea that would: help. him solve his problem. Why not go on the web and look for photographs of the Earth and other planets taken from space. They would give him a really good view of the planets they had, to talk about in their report. Instead of a bad grade, his group would have the best project ever. The photos of Earth showed. lots of clouds, but you could still see the shapes of land and seas on Earth. He also looked at photos of Mars.
Lee now had plenty of ideas for making a model of the planet Mars. All he had, to do was to turn his ideas into a model. He used a small ball to help him make the, shape he wanted and then painted it to look like the photos of Mars that he had seen. ▲

A. Got several books from the library. B. Looked at photos on the internet. C. Made a model of a planet.
5. Which of the following is the most suitable for ▲ in the last paragraph?

B. Usually taking part in a project group is more necessary.
C. Mostly turning the ideas into practice is more important.
B
Them and Us
Robots are already popular in industry, but scientists and engineers around the world are now developing a new generation of robots. These new robots are becoming increasingly independent. They can cook and clean, and may soon even take care of young children and older people. In the future, they will do things that only humans did before. This new generation of robots may be more like friends or family members than machines.
Robotic Help
New robots are no longer just machines. They are now able to do things they never did in the past. PR2, for example, is a prototype of such a robot: At the company that created it, PR2 delivers mail, but it is also able to cook and fold laundry. It can even be programmed to help older people. “In five to ten years, robots will routinely be functioning in human environments,” Reid Simmons, a professor of robotics, predicts.
Spending Time Together
Hiroshi Ishiguro is a robot expert. He has made robots more realistic. He believes the differences between humans and robots will continue to shrink until people think of them as human.
Ishiguro is trying to prove this using a robotic twin he has built While most of us may dream of having a robot to do our work for us, Ishiguro has a different idea. He thinks the best use for his twin would be at his mother’s home. She lives far away, and he is rarely able to visit her. But if she had a robot, she could spend more time with “him”. When asked why his mother would be happy with a robot son, he replies, “Because it is myself.” If robots become enough like people that you can’t tell the difference, Ishiguro wonders, “does it really matter if you’re interacting with a human or machine?”
6. What can we know about robots from the passage?
A. They are becoming more and more like humans.
B. They are becoming more and more like machines.
C. They are becoming more and more dependent on people.
7. Which of the following is right according to the passage?
A. PR2 can do all the things humans can do right now.
B. Most people can buy and use PR2 right now.
C. Most people are increasingly likely to see PR2.
8. What does the underlined word “shrink” mean in Para.3?
A The difference between humans and robots is growing bigger.
B. The difference between humans and robots is getting smaller.
C. There are no differences between humans and robots.
9. What can we know about Ishiguro?
A. He probably sees his mother less often than she would like.
B. He thinks robots are dangerous.
C. He thinks everyone will own, a robot in the future.
10. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To show us the difference between the robots and humans.
B. To help us learn about the developments of the robots.
C. To encourage us to invent and use the human-like robots.

Subject: Meet the Nobel Prize winners
The Nobel Prize week finished in October, 2024. Some people from different countries were awarded (授予) the Nobel Prize for their outstanding contributions. Now, let’s meet some of the winners.
Chemistry
The chemistry prize went to US scientists David Baker and John Jumper, along with British computer scientist Demis Hassabis. Baker Built new kinds of proteins (蛋白质), while Jumper and Hassabis made an AI model called AlphaFold2 to work out hard protein structure. It has been very difficult for scientists to work out how proteins fold into 3D shapes that decide their function (功能). However, AlphaFold2 can perfectly work out the 3D shapes of nearly all known proteins. It may also help with new drug (药物) development.
Physics
US scientist John Hopfield and British-Canadian Geoffrey Hinton won the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics for helping lead the way for the development of AL. In 1982 Hopfield made a network (网络) that helps computers store and recall patterns. This is like how our brains remember things. A. year later Hinton made the. Boltzimann machine. It allows computers to learn on their own to find patterns, like finding different things in pictures. According to Ellen Moons, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, their work has already been of the greatest benefit since artificial neural networks (人工神经网络) are being widely used.
Physiology or medicine
US scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun discovered how genes (基因) are controlled in cells (细胞). Although all cells in our bodies have the same genes, different types, like muscle and nerve cells, work in different ways. They found out that tiny helpers called microRNAs help control which genes are active in cells. This discovery is important for understanding how things develop and function.
