[01](2025·广东深圳·二模)Many high school seniors approach the college application essay with anxiety. They feel their lives are too ordinary to create a story that will impress admissions officers. 1 It just needs to be a genuine reflection of their personal growth, drawn from everyday moments.
I once worked with a boy who had no idea what to write about. Family? Favorite subject? He kept silent until I suggested, “Hobbies?” He shyly said, “I like boxing.” Then his essay unfolded, not about boxing itself, but about self-discipline and resilience (坚韧), qualities that any college would admire. So look into the things that shape you. 2
Some students try to catch attention by writing their essays in unconventional forms, such as a poem or a play. Most still follow the traditional storytelling model: a hook (引子), a story, and a lesson learned. 3 For example, the rough edges and the pleasant smell of her father’s handmade furniture inspired one girl to become an engineer. The magic is in the details and emotional depth.
As a writing tutor, I was hung up on language rules at first. Should I help my students stick to “standard English,” or let them write the way they naturally speak — even if that includes informal expressions? 4 It’s also about expressing ideas naturally and making connections with readers. It doesn’t hurt to tell a humorous childhood incident in a light, conversational tone.
5 Essay writing teaches students to express themselves with precision through rethinking ideas, refining language, and rewriting drafts. With multiple edits, they will uncover deeper insights and create a story only they can tell.
A.After all, I preferred a formal writing style.
B.A great essay eventually takes form in revision.
C.I soon realized writing isn’t just about language.
D.That’s why they try to make up appealing stories.
E.Whatever the form, an essay stands out for its story.
F.Once a topic clicks, the essay practically writes itself.
G.But a powerful essay doesn’t require a dramatic story.
Every time life knocks you down, just remember these actions to take, and you can heal and overcome the crisis quickly, returning to your life stronger and happier.
Accept reality. Instead of avoiding life, take the change as a challenge. You will eventually either get what you want. You don’t necessarily need to be in a place where there is no challenge or hard work. 1 Once you manage to do that, you can handle anything that comes your way.
2 After darkness always comes light, and every sunrise reminds you of this, but sometimes you still forget this fact and choose to believe that the night will last forever. It won’t, because nothing lasts forever. Every moment is a second chance to start fresh, so take this moment and make the best of it.
Push yourself to take another step whatever happens. Every mistake and loss contains within it the solution and the hidden lesson you need to discover and learn to function correctly the next time you face the same problem. Don’t let things outside your control interfere with the endless things within your control. 3
Be positive and don’t let negativity control you. You can either give in to negativity and let it take over your life, or you can be positive and focus on what truly matters. 4 Choose to be positive-about your situation, your opportunities, and what you can do to move forward.
Find one small thing you. can appreciate. If you have many reasons to cry and complain but choose to smile and appreciate life instead, you’re on the right path. Being thankful for the "ordinary" things in your life may seem strange. 5 Think of all the beauty around you, notice it, and smile.
A.Look forward to a fresh start.
B.You need to embrace the changes and stay calm.
C.Instead, use those things to drive yourself forward.
D.Remind yourself that everything in life is temporary.
E.In other words, don’t wait for a reason to be positive.
F.Being positive in negative situations doesn’t mean being naive.
G.But only when you truly appreciate them can you make them extraordinary.
[03](24-25高三上·黑龙江哈尔滨·阶段练习)If you have ever interacted with a playful puppy, a darling kitten, or any other adorable creature, chances are that you’ve experienced an overwhelming urge to pet, squeeze, or even pinch them. 1 It is a response that is likely linked to our innate drive to nurture and protect our young.
2 A questionnaire to measure the levels of cute aggression experienced was given to the participants of the study. Researchers found that people tend to feel a stronger “cute aggression” response towards baby animals and pictures of digitally enhanced human babies with enlarged features. They also found that seeing cute things triggers the brain’s emotion and reward systems. Someone may feel so overwhelmed with emotions that they have become unmanageable. The brain’s strategy to regulate this imbalance is to express an “opposite” emotion to avoid excessive emotional exertion. 3 This phenomenon is called a dimorphous expression (二态表达) of emotion.
A second study also confirmed that cute aggression is a way of regulating emotions. When people are overwhelmed by a strong emotion, they develop distorted negative behavior called “duplicity”, in which what they do does not correspond to what they think. But cute aggression doesn’t equal abusive violence. 4
Now that you know why you feel the urge to squeeze unbearably cute and fluffy things, there’s no need to worry about these aggressive tendencies. 5 If you feel the urge to pinch, bite, or even “grind your teeth” when you see cute animals, don’t worry — this is not “sadistic tendencies”, but the brain is trying to control itself.
A.The brain uses aggression to balance the overwhelming positive emotions of the two systems.
B.A study in 2018 sought to comprehend the brain activity triggering cute aggression.
C.The stronger the feelings of cute aggression, the stronger the urge to flee.
D.They’re a normal part of our response to adorable creatures.
E.On the contrary, cute aggression can foster collaboration between people.
F.The former is a positive emotion that does not lead to real violent actions.
G.This instinctive impulse is commonly referred to as cute aggression.
Is walking backward better?
Walking is one of the simplest and most accessible ways to stay fit, but some people assume that taking a few steps in reverse (反向) could unlock even greater benefits. This seemingly unconventional movement, known as backward walking or retro walking, is gaining attention for improving balance, strengthening underused muscles, and even sharpening cognitive function. 1
Benefits of walking backward.
Unlike forward walking, which primarily engages the ankles, walking backward shifts the workload to the hips and knees. This minor change in movement activates different muscle groups, offering unique benefits for strength and mobility.
Janet Dufek, a nutrition sciences professor at the University of Nevada, found that retro walking increases low back and leg flexibility, reduces low back pain, and improves balance and stability. 2 According to the American College of Sports Medicine, retro walking burns 40 percent more calories per minute than lively forward walking.
A workout for the brain too.
Emerging research suggests that walking backward does more than strengthen muscles. 3 This was proved in a 2019 study which found that participants who walked backward for 10 to 15 minutes three to four times a week showed greater improvements in cognitive functioning and memory than those who stepped forward or remained inactive.
4
Not everyone is fully convinced about the benefits of retro walking, though. “The evidence for backward walking training mostly comes from physical therapy, where very small studies show that this type of training may help people with knee issues when added to a regular physical therapy program,” says Jonathan Jarry, a science communicator in McGill University.
“For the rest of us, we are left with an odd-looking exercise that is unlikely to be better than regular workouts, and that comes with the added danger of tripping over ourselves.” Haas adds. 5 “Just be careful in your practice. Use of a treadmill (跑步机) can reduce these risks,” says Dufek. “Ensure that your walking space is safe without trip danger. You can always use a walking partner to be your ‘eye’ when you cannot see.”
A.It also sharpens cognitive function.
B.Is walking backward really better?
C.But the benefits go beyond these.
D.Still, safety is key for those willing to try it.
E.However, the improvement in flexibility is not always obvious.
F.Here are some practical tips to make retro walking practice as pleasant as possible.
G.Now, researchers are uncovering just how influential this small change in movement can be.
[05](2025·四川德阳·三模)In our fast-paced world, emotional regulation has become a survival skill. Unlike bottling up emotions, effective emotional management helps respond thoughtfully. To achieve this, several practical strategies can help us manage our emotions effectively.
1 Psychologists suggest labeling emotions as weather patterns: Is this a passing “rain shower” of frustration or an enduring “cold front” of sadness? This approach creates psychological distance, making it easier to process emotions effectively.
Breathe before you leap. When anger hits, try the 4-7-8 technique: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. 2 Firefighters regularly use it to stay calm in crises.
Move to Improve. In addition to breathing techniques, physical activity also plays a crucial role in emotional regulation. According to a 2018 Harvard study, engaging in 30-minute daily walks can reduce anxiety symptoms by up to 25%. 3 Regular physical activity not only improves sleep quality but also boosts energy levels and increases self-esteem.
Seek wise support. Beyond individual efforts, seeking support from others can significantly benefit our emotional well-being. Create a “go-to trio”: one logical friend for objective advice, one understanding listener for emotional support, and one professional for expert guidance. 4
True emotional mastery lies not in bottling up feelings but in dancing gracefully with them. 5 By applying these strategies, we can turn emotional challenges into opportunities for growth.
A.Even chair stretches during breaks make a difference.
B.Make sure what your emotional dynamics is for yourself.
C.This diverse support system ensures access to valuable resources.
D.The strategy probably succeeds in calming the nervous system down.
E.Explore insights into our emotional landscape under any circumstances.
F.As a psychologist says, “Discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life.”
G.Only through the useful structured workouts are you able to benefit from activities.
In today’s interconnected society, the Chinese language is rapidly gaining importance, becoming valuable at both professional and individual levels. 1
China’s remarkable economic growth has played a critical role in the increasing interest in learning Chinese. Proficiency (精通)in Chinese has become advantageous for individuals seeking to engage with China’s vast market. 2 Many individuals are eager to connect with China’s rich literature, appreciate arts, and interact with locals on a more profound level.
Various motivations for learning Chinese have given rise to diverse approaches to language acquisition. 3 This provides structured learning and access to language teachers. Some prefer online courses or language apps. These offer flexibility and convenience. Immersive experiences are also highly effective for developing fluency and cultural understanding.
The approach to Chinese language education varies significantly across different regions of the world. In countries with large Chinese communities, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, Chinese is often taught as a second language in schools. 4 In Europe and North America, Chinese is typically taught as a foreign language, with varying degrees of emphasis placed on language instruction in schools and universities.
5 The tones of the language and the complex writing system can initially seem upset. However, with consistent effort and dedication, learners can overcome these barriers and harvest the benefits of Chinese proficiency. The ability to communicate in Chinese opens doors to a world of cultural exchange, personal connection, and professional advancement.
A.Learning Chinese presents both challenges and rewards.
B.Some individuals choose traditional classroom instruction.
C.Besides, there is a growing fascination with Chinese culture.
D.The world is welcoming the Chinese language with enthusiasm.
E.As a result, people from all corners of the world are eager to learn it.
F.Governments worldwide are encouraging and supporting language learning.
G.This early exposure provides a solid foundation for further language learning.
[07](2025·福建福州·三模)The great irony is that as we become increasingly “connected” —on social media, video calling, and messaging—we still feel increasingly lonely. And even though we may use technology to feel more connected, it may be exactly what’s leading us to feel lonely.
What about you? 1 If not, try some of these strategies to stop feeling lonely.
Talk to strangers. A growing body of research suggests that even seemingly worthless interactions with strangers—like chatting with a cashier—may be able to keep loneliness at bay by helping us feel more socially connected. So reach out to other human beings to say hello, or chat about whatever’s on your mind. 2
Stop focusing so much on you. It’s almost unavoidable in our modern technology-crazed world that we start to believe we don’t have enough. Instead of focusing on what you can get, shift your focus to what you can give. You could sell T-shirts online to raise money for a good cause. You could ask friends to donate to a charity for your birthday. 3 These small acts can make a big difference and help you reduce feelings of loneliness.
Connect in real life. Connecting in real life may not be as easy as it once was. We often default (默认) to using our smartphones—it’s easier, and now it’s culturally accepted. 4 We do this by looking people in the eyes, listening, being mindful, and choosing not be distracted by our phones or other technologies.
5 It’s important to practice self-sympathy when you fail at things. There is no need to put yourself down. That kind of attitude won’t help you decrease loneliness. Instead, try talking to yourself in a way that is supportive and caring—and you’ll be more likely to acknowledge mistakes in trying to decrease loneliness, and hopefully do better next time.
A.Be nice to yourself.
B.Stop your negative thought cycles.
C.Are you feeling socially connected?
D.Do you find online interactions less satisfying?
E.It helps you to feel more connected and less lonely.
F.But we can decrease our loneliness if we build stronger personal interaction.
G.By giving to others, you take the focus off yourself and do good at the same time.
[08](2025·河北石家庄·二模)Procrastination is delaying tasks, even when we know we shouldn’t. We say, “I’ll do it later,” but later turns into much later — or never. It’s not laziness; it’s avoiding stress or discomfort. But those tasks don’t go away — they stay and add to our worries. While procrastination is a persistent problem, actionable strategies can help you break the cycle over time.
Limit distractions (分心的事)
Do you have any distractions which hold you back from doing your tasks? Find them and try to avoid or reduce them. For example, if you are distracted by your mobile often, turn off the notifications. 1 . You can also use music to focus on your tasks. Music has the power to keep you out of those distracting noises.
Apply the 2-minute rule
The 2-minute rule is a simple way to beat procrastination. If a task takes less than two minutes, just do it right away instead of putting it off. Need to wash a dish? Do it now. Need to make the bed? Do it now. 2 .
Find an accountability partner
Sometimes, we might need help from other people. 3 . Just ask a friend, family member, or a professional to help keep you on track. Having someone to support and encourage you can make a big difference in your life. They can remind you to stay focused and even share helpful tips to get things done.
Celebrate small achievements
Another strategy is celebrating your winning moments. Your achievements might be small. 4 . It will help you keep going, and you will not feel like procrastinating your tasks.
5
Break big tasks into smaller ones. This helps you set goals you can achieve. Tackle one small task at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed (不知所措) by big projects.
A.That’s not wrong
B.Achieve bigger goals
C.Simplify the task at hand
D.You have few people to turn to
E.Thus, you can create a dedicated workspace
F.But make sure you reward yourself for them
G.This method helps stop small tasks from building up
[09](2025·浙江宁波·二模)The path to healthy weight combines two key elements. Exercise and eating habits form its foundation. Some believe they demand lots of effort or planning. But that’s not true. In fact, the best way to work them into our lives is by making small changes that gradually become part of our routine. 1
Regular Exercise
Teens should get 60+ minutes of daily physical activity. 2 All that matters is that each week you get the right balance of activity, including dancing, brisk walking, or stair-climbing. Breaking works into 15-minute “exercise snacks” (e. g., morning yoga, lunchtime walks) throughout the day makes goals more achievable. This strategy avoids burnout while keeping energy steady.
Good Eating Habits
3 Actually, crash diets cause weight rebounds. A 2022 study found 80% of teens regained weight post-diet. Therefore, teens should eat a variety of foods, and there’s nothing wrong with the occasional treat. A candy bar somehow beats snapping daily.
To build lasting habits, reshape your mindset. 4 When stressed, try brief walks rather than reaching for snacks. Track weekly progress with a checklist—small achievements boost motivation strongly.
In conclusion, creatively design routines blending exercise and nutrition in your own way. 5 While others choose gym workouts, you might prefer playing Frisbee with your dog. Knowing what’s right for you will make it a lot easier to do!
A.You’re all different after all.
B.Independence matters in habit-building.
C.View food as fuel, not emotional comfort.
D.Low-calorie diets ensure steady weight loss.
E.Eating well doesn’t mean dieting over and over.
F.It doesn’t mean doing tough exercises or hitting the gym.
G.Here’s how to make these other healthy habits just as easy.
[10](2025·甘肃白银·二模)Being in the sun is hard work — or so your brain and body seem to think. Even when you’re just relaxing on a lawn chair by the pool or at the beach, you may notice you feel extra sleepy after being outside in the sun for hours. Why does this happen? 1
Your body is working hard to regulate its temperature. Even if you are in a lying position by the pool, your body is constantly working to decrease its temperature to a normal level when you’re out in the heat. 2 You’re breathing faster, your heart rate is increasing and you’re sweating more. These all require extra energy from your body, which can leave you feeling tired.
3 When you’re hanging out by the pool or at the beach, this may give you the opportunity to finally slow down and unwind from stress. Your body may recognize that it lacks sleep and can finally recover and relax, which can make you feel sleepy.
So, it’s time to say goodbye to sunbath? 4 In fact, being in the sun can be quite good for you — if you use it properly. For example, sun exposure helps your body produce vitamin D, which is key for the immune system and bone health. 5 The problem is that we’re not protecting our skin, not staying hydrated and being exposed to too much sun. As with anything, too much of a good thing can be bad.
A.Your body is releasing built-up stress.
B.Here are some reasons why you can get sunburnt.
C.Also sunshine has been shown to boost your mood.
D.We talked to doctors about why the sun can make us feel tired.
E.These are some symptoms of heat exhaustion you’re experiencing.
F.There are three things your body is doing to try to cool itself down.
G.None of these is meant to suggest that you should stay away from the sun’s rays.
[11](2025·四川内江·三模)In today’s fast-paced world, effective studying is essential for academic success. However, the common misconception is that studying hard means studying smart. The truth is that studying smart allows you to enhance your efforts and achieve better results without tiring yourself out too much. Then, how can you study smart?
Set clear and achievable goals. This is the first step toward studying smart. 1 By setting specific goals, you can focus your efforts and measure your progress effectively. Moreover, clear goals provide a sense of direction and motivation, ensuring that you stay on track and avoid aimless studying.
2 Studying smart doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. Reach out for help when you need it. Cooperate with classmates or form study groups to discuss concepts, clarify doubts, and exchange ideas. Additionally, don’t hesitate to seek help from teachers, tutors, or academic advisors. 3
Practice time management. Efficient time management is key to studying smart. Learn to identify and avoid time-wasting activities, such as excessive social media use or aimless internet browsing. Research suggests that regular breaks can enhance focus and prevent mental burnout. 4 For example, you can set aside certain times for leisure and relaxation. Engaging in physical activities, practicing mindfulness, or pursuing hobbies during breaks can further boost productivity by reducing stress and increasing overall well-being.
Prioritize effective techniques. Not all study techniques are created equal. 5 You just experiment with various techniques to find what suits you best and invest your time and effort accordingly.
A.Seek support when needed.
B.Spend less time getting assistance.
C.So learning to allow your mind recharge is necessary.
D.What you have to do is to identify the methods that work best for you.
E.Break down your larger academic objectives into smaller, manageable tasks.
F.Create a study schedule or timetable to structure your own learning sessions.
G.They can provide guidance and resources to enhance your learning experience.
[12](2025·山东济宁·二模)Creating your own plant specimens (标本) is a fun, simple project that anyone can do at home. It involves collecting plant specimens, pressing them and labeling them. 1 Just keep an eye out wherever you go and look for your eye-catching plants. Labeling them is a topic I’ll save for another day. So today I want to show you how to press the specimens.
Construct a homemade plant press. 2 Then cover it with a piece of corrugated (起皱的) card, followed by 2 sheets of absorbent paper. This will serve as the bottom half of your press. Have a second board and more cards and absorbent paper on standby for when you’re ready to put the top half.
Arrange your specimens on the bottom half of your press. Lay out each cutting which you’ve cleaned beforehand in such a way that it looks as attractive as possible. 3 If possible, stretch smaller specimens out to their full length so that they dry perfectly flat. Leave 1 — 2 inches of space between each specimen to keep them from sticking together.
4 Once you’re satisfied with the layout of your plants, sandwich them with another layer of absorbent paper, corrugated card, and hardboard. Pile bricks, large books, or similar items evenly across the upper board to weigh it down and press the cuttings flat.
Continue drying and pressing your specimens. 5 Depending on the size and type of the plants you’re preserving, it may take them anywhere from a couple of days to 3 full weeks to dry completely.
A.Collecting plant specimens is very simple.
B.Describe any outstanding features you notice.
C.Start by selecting the materials you may need.
D.Place one hardboard flat against a level surface.
E.The duration of this process varies considerably.
F.Close the press and set heavy objects on top to create pressure.
G.Meanwhile, ensure each of its main features can be seen clearly.
[13](2025·河北·二模)The thought of relocating to another city is worrying. 1 . But remember that you are not the first to experience a life-changing move. So, if you are moving to another city soon, take a look at the following tips.
Consider the price of housing
Spend some time before you move researching the average cost of homes in the area that you are moving to. 2 If you know where you are going to be staying before you arrive, you will reduce much of the stress that you will have once you get there.
Research transportation methods
As soon as you arrive in a new city, you are going to immediately need to have a plan for how you will get from one place to another. Compare the cost of using public transportation with that of owning your own vehicle. You’d better consider the environmental impact and
convenience. 3 .
Pay attention to the diet
When you move to a new city, your eating habits may change due to different food options available. 4 . Try to maintain a balanced diet by incorporating local produce and nutritious options. If you have dietary restrictions, check for nearby specialty stores or restaurants that can cater to your needs.
5
After you move to another city, you do not want to forget the people that you have left behind back home. Whether it is through email, social media, or phone, let the important people on your contact list know your latest news. Also, taking into account your soon-to-be schedule, let them know the best time of the day to reach you.
A.Maintain your social network
B.Keep family and friends informed
C.Also, you can consider the cost of renting
D.You need to decorate your new home properly
E.Research local grocery stores to find healthy food sources
F.Anyway, choose the option that best fits your lifestyle and budget
G.Trying to think of every task that you need to complete is stressful
[14](2025·贵州·二模)The Art Of War is one of the world’s most famous and influential military texts, written by the Chinese Strategist Sun Tzu. It is recommended by all the famous business experts and even sports coaches. Why is it so influential and helpful? The Art Of War provides the necessary guidelines on how to approach problems better. Now take a look at these important life lessons.
Choose your battles carefully. One of the first lessons that we learn is to choose our battles. It is better to understand when you should engage in a conflict and when it will be wise to avoid any argument at all. 1
Always plan and strategize. 2 Having a well-defined strategy before you enter any conflict can guide you through it. In fact, it is also important in everyday life to have clear SMART goals to increase your chances of success. In other words, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak.
3 Knowing yourself is important but it is also equally important to know your enemy. Underrating your enemy can be the biggest mistake you make. Understand your strengths but also recognize your weaknesses. 4 Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will not be endangered in a hundred battles.
Always be adaptable and flexible. You need to respond to your changing circumstances and adapt to them. Seize an opportunity whenever it arises. 5 Victory belongs to those who can adjust to changing circumstances, seize opportunities, and remain responsive to their environment.
A.Planning is the core.
B.Assess your enemy and yourself.
C.Quick action outweighs thorough preparation.
D.He will win who knows when to fight and when not to.
E.Focus only on your strengths to control the competition.
F.You can only do it when you are flexible enough to adapt to new ideas.
G.This can help you develop strategies to protect the weakest parts of yourself.
[15](2025·云南曲靖·二模)Readers might be attracted by a book standing in the middle of a bookstore lined with shiny artwork. But what will make them go through the pages after they’ve picked it up? The answer lies in the book introduction. 1 . Here are some tips on how to write introductions for works of fiction and non-fiction.
Don’t Worry about Its Length
2 . The short answer is: there isn’t one. The length of an introduction entirely depends on your subject matter. Instead of trying to fit your introduction into a set number of pages, make a list of the important points potential readers should know, so they would continue reading your book.
Choose Your Reader Wisely
Before an author begins writing, he/ she will usually have an ideal reader in mind. This reader is one who is interested in your subject, and who will therefore appreciate the work you have done. Before writing your introduction, picture your ideal readers and write to them rather than trying to appeal to a general audience. 3 .
Don’t Be Afraid to Boast(自夸)a Little
The introduction is not the place for you to be humble about your experiences and expertise. 4 . Instead, you have to find the right balance between making yourself relatable to your readers while demonstrating that you are an authority on your subject. List the ways in which you bring a unique edge to it.
5
Now that you have your ideal reader, outline, and expertise all down, it’s time to think about your introduction’s opening paragraph. How are you going to get that reader to pause in the middle of the bookstore? You need to give readers an introduction with some kind of an attractive story—one that will get them to ask: “And then what happens next?”
A.Think about Your “Hook”
B.Give Readers Instructions on How to Read
C.That’s where the author hooks the reader and captures their thoughts
D.This will guide you to determine the appropriate length of your introduction
E.You will be catering it to those who would naturally want to read your work
F.It’s normal to wonder if there’s a word limit you should stick to when writing your introduction
G.Of course, this doesn’t mean you should use it just to show off and sing your own praises either
[16](2025·河北张家口·二模)Just because our plant friends live inside with us doesn’t mean that they have forgotten what it is to be a plant. They may not react to the seasons as dramatically as their cousins outside do. 1 So if you are mad about an unhappy plant in winter, take it easy! Here are four important things to get your green babies to spring.
Water less frequently. Since plants are considerably less active during the winter months, they do not need as much water. Root-ruining overwatering is one of the most common causes of death for indoor plants. This doesn’t mean completely ignoring them, but only water when the soil is dry. 2
Watch the humidity (湿度). Many houseplants like to live in humid environments. In winter, with heaters and fireplaces burning, a lack of humidity can be a problem. 3 As we know it tends to be one of the more humid places in a house. You can also increase humidity by grouping plants together to create a microclimate or use a humidifier near them.
4 While houseplants may love the windowsill for its light, they do not love the windowsill for its drafts and cold air. Likewise, they don’t love being near heat sources like heating pipes, radiators, and fireplaces. In a perfect houseplant world, day temperatures should range from 65 to 75 degrees and drop to no lower than 50 degrees at night.
Dust and tidy-up regularly. We generally think that insect problems would be more a problem in summer. But as it turns out, houseplants are more sensitive to insects in winter because they go into that state of dormancy (冬眠). 5 So make sure you’re wiping the leaves regularly with a damp cloth. And remove any dead or yellowing leaves with a pair of clean, sharp scissors.
A.Keep a steady temperature.
B.But they still feel the changes.
C.Put your plants in your bathroom.
D.It is normal and crucial to change the pots.
E.Insects love to hide in the dust on the plant leaves.
F.You can expect a decline in growth and even leaf drop.
G.You can test this by putting your finger 2 inches into the soil.
[17](2025·山东·模拟预测)It has long been known that sleep also plays a significant role in physical and emotional health. Now, researchers from the University of South Australia have published a new study in the Journal of Neuroscience. 1 This is good news for anyone who wants to study a foreign language.
According to a blog on Everywhere English, there are two phases that the brain cycles through when sleeping. 2 During this phase, which usually happens about an hour and a half after a person has fallen asleep, brain activity is high and shows levels that are similar to when that person is awake. This is when dreams occur. In non-REM sleep, brain activity is low.
3 But in fact, the researchers from the University of South Australia found that just the opposite is true.
According to a University of South Australia press release, the researchers conducted an experiment with 35 native English speakers. Half of the students learned the language in the morning and then went on with their days. 4 This way the researchers could record their brainwaves. Both groups were tested on their knowledge in the morning. The group that had slept soon after they studied performed significantly better than those who had not.
“ 5 It’s an active, transformative state for the brain,” Dr. Scott Cousins, a researcher at the University of South Australia, said in the press release.
A.Sleep is not just restful.
B.The first is called REM sleep.
C.Is sleep help you learn language?
D.If you are active, you’ll have a good memory.
E.It investigates the way sleep helps people learn language.
F.But the other half studied in the evening and then slept at the lab.
G.One may think that memory and learning are gained when the brain is active.
[18](24-25高三上·湖北·阶段练习)Whether you like it or not, fall is here. Soon the weather will get colder. The leaves will die and the nights will stretch longer than the days. Another year is dying; that’s just how it goes.
Studies suggest that if you are deeply preoccupied with your thoughts, in the autumn, you may be at more risk for depression in the winter. Changing the clocks in the fall is associated with depressive episodes (changing them back in spring is not). 1
Psychologists say that the feelings that often crop up in autumn come from our discomfort with change, and an anxiety and uncertainty about what that change will bring.
2 And of these things the anxiety, the promise and even the careful thoughts — make it the ideal season to build resilience and practice mindfulness. Psychologists have also found that the thought of change, the ending of one thing, the beginning of another, and perhaps our own mortality, underlies a great deal of anxiety. Some of us struggle with “intolerance of uncertainty,” more than others.
But intolerance of uncertainty is a part of being human; everyone has it on some level. 3 One way to build tolerance is to lean into it — to cultivate uncertainty rather than running away from it.
4 Quietly sit on a park bench and watch a tree drop its leaves, for instance, examine the roses in the garden that need pruning ... in such moments, it’s important to stop thinking, analyzing, or having internal conversations about work or troubles or even whatever you are witnessing.
Autumn will probably hold some whisper of decay and mortality. 5 If you are always trying to avoid difficult feelings, you might end up also cutting yourself off from love, richness and sweetness. Dr. Wilson said, “this is how life is: sweet and sad, poured from the same vessel in equal measure.”
A.And it is changeable.
B.But it is not that bad.
C.But embracing that sadness is important.
D.More recently, it’s become a time to appreciate our surroundings.
E.Fall also brings with it bright, briskdays, pumpkin patches and cozy sweaters.
F.It is no wonder that the season has so many celebrations to attempt to keep our spirits up.
G.Another strategy experts suggest for soothing anxiety is to step back and simply observe the world around you.

1.根据上文“Many high school seniors approach the college application essay with anxiety. They feel their lives are too ordinary to create a story that will impress admissions officers.(许多高中毕业生都带着焦虑来写大学申请论文。他们觉得自己的生活太过平凡,无法编造一个能打动招生官的故事)”以及后文“It just needs to be a genuine reflection of their personal growth, drawn from everyday moments.(它只需要真实地反映他们的个人成长,从日常生活中汲取灵感)”可知,本句与上文构成转折关系,指出强有力的文章需要真实,而不是编造的故事。故G选项“但是一篇强有力的文章并不需要一个戏剧性的故事”符合语境,故选G。
2.根据上文“I once worked with a boy who had no idea what to write about. Family? Favorite subject? He kept silent until I suggested, “Hobbies?” He shyly said, “I like boxing.” Then his essay unfolded, not about boxing itself, but about self-discipline and resilience (坚韧), qualities that any college would admire. So look into the things that shape you.(我曾经和一个不知道写什么的男孩一起工作。家庭吗?最喜欢的科目吗?他一直保持沉默,直到我提议:“爱好?”他害羞地说:“我喜欢拳击。”然后,他的文章展开了,不是关于拳击本身,而是关于自律和韧性,这些品质是任何一所大学都会钦佩的。所以看看那些塑造你的东西)”可知,上文主要论述了如何找到文章的主题然后展开文章的建议。故F选项“一旦找到了主题,这篇文章就自然而然地写好了”符合语境,故选F。
3.根据上文“Some students try to catch attention by writing their essays in unconventional forms, such as a poem or a play. Most still follow the traditional storytelling model: a hook (引子), a story, and a lesson learned.(一些学生试图通过非传统的形式来吸引注意力,比如一首诗或一个剧本。大多数仍然遵循传统的讲故事模式:一个引子,一个故事,一个教训)”可知,上文列举了不同的讲故事模式,本句承接上文,说明这些形式的作用。故E选项“无论采用何种形式,一篇文章都会因为它的故事而脱颖而出”符合语境,故选E。
4.根据上文“As a writing tutor, I was hung up on language rules at first. Should I help my students stick to “standard English,” or let them write the way they naturally speak — even if that includes informal expressions?(作为一名写作导师,一开始我对语言规则很着迷。我应该帮助我的学生坚持“标准英语”,还是让他们用他们自然说话的方式来写——即使其中包括非正式的表达?)”以及后文“It’s also about expressing ideas naturally and making connections with readers. It doesn’t hurt to tell a humorous childhood incident in a light, conversational tone.(这也是关于自然地表达想法,与读者建立联系。用轻松、对话的语气讲述一个幽默的童年事件并没有什么坏处)”可知,本句主要是作者对于写作中的语言的感悟,故C选项“我很快意识到写作不仅仅是语言”符合语境,故选C。
5.根据后文“Essay writing teaches students to express themselves with precision through rethinking ideas, refining language, and rewriting drafts. With multiple edits, they will uncover deeper insights and create a story only they can tell.(论文写作教会学生通过重新思考思想、精炼语言和重写草稿来精确地表达自己。通过多次编辑,他们将发现更深入的见解,并创造一个只有他们才能讲述的故事)”可知,后文提到经过编辑,文章会融入更深入的见解,说明了修改对于文章的重要性。故B选项“一篇伟大的文章最终是在修改中形成的”符合语境,故选B。

【答案】1.G 2.B 3.A 4.F 5.D

5.根据上文“Now that you know why you feel the urge to squeeze unbearably cute and fluffy things, there's no need to worry about these aggressive tendencies.(现在你知道为什么你会有挤压可爱得让人无法忍受的毛茸茸的东西的冲动了,就没有必要担心这些侵略性倾向了。)”
【答案】1.G 2.C 3.A 4.B 5.D

You can always use a walking partner to be your ‘eye’ when you cannot see.” D选项“Still, safety is key for those willing to try it.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.A 4.C 5.F

A“Even chair stretches during breaks make a difference. 故选A。
4.根据上文“Create a “go-to trio”: one logical friend for objective advice, one understanding listener for emotional support, and one professional for expert guidance. (建立一个“可靠三人组”:一个能给出客观建议的理性朋友,一个能给予情感支持的善解人意的倾听者,以及一个能提供专业指导的专家)”可知,要建立一个由三类人组成的支持体系。选项C“This diverse support system ensures access to valuable resources. (这个多样化的支持系统确保能获得有价值的资源)”中的“This diverse support system”指代的是上文的“go-to trio”,能够总结前文内容,说明这样的支持体系的作用。故选C。
5.根据上文“True emotional mastery lies not in bottling up feelings but in dancing gracefully with them. (真正的情绪掌控不在于压抑情绪,而在于优雅地与情绪共舞)”可知,真正的情绪掌控不是压抑情绪,而是与情绪共存。选项F“As a psychologist says, “Discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life.” (正如一位心理学家所说:“不适是进入有意义生活的代价。”)”延续上文内容,指出不适是进入有意义生活的代价,从而自然引出下文“By applying these strategies, we can turn emotional challenges into opportunities for growth. (通过应用这些策略,我们可以把情绪挑战转化为成长的机会)”,即把情绪挑战转化为成长机会。故选F。

【答案】1.C 2.E 3.G 4.F 5.A
1.根据前文“The great irony is that as we become increasingly “connected” —on social media, video calling, and messaging—we still feel increasingly lonely. And even though we may use technology to feel more connected, it may be exactly what’s leading us to feel lonely.(具有讽刺意味的是,当我们越来越多地“联系”在社交媒体、视频通话和短信上时,我们仍然感到越来越孤独。
A growing body of research suggests that even seemingly worthless interactions with strangers—like chatting with a cashier—may be able to keep loneliness at bay by helping us feel more socially connected. So reach out to other human beings to say hello, or chat about whatever’s on your mind.(和陌生人交谈。越来越多的研究表明,即使是与陌生人之间看似毫无价值的互动——比如与收银员聊天——也能帮助我们感受到更多的社会联系,从而抑制孤独感。所以伸出手去和别人打个招呼,或者谈谈你的想法)”可知,E项“It helps you to feel more connected and less lonely.(它会让你感觉更有联系,更少孤独)”介绍了和陌生人打招呼或者谈谈的好处,符合文意。故选E项。
3.根据前文“Stop focusing so much on you. It’s almost unavoidable in our modern technology-crazed world that we start to believe we don’t have enough. Instead of focusing on what you can get, shift your focus to what you can give. You could sell T-shirts online to raise money for a good cause. You could ask friends to donate to a charity for your birthday.(不要太关注你自己。在我们这个为科技疯狂的现代世界里,我们几乎不可避免地开始相信我们拥有的东西还不够。与其关注你能得到什么,不如把注意力转移到你能给予什么上。你可以在网上出售t恤,为慈善事业筹集资金。你可以让朋友为你的生日捐款)”可知,本段主要讲述通过给予来减少孤独,所以G项“By giving to others, you take the focus off yourself and do good at the same time.(通过给予他人,你把注意力从自己身上移开,同时也做了善事)”符合本段主题,是对前文的总结。股癣G项。
4.根据前文“Connect in real life. Connecting in real life may not be as easy as it once was. We often default (默认) to using our smartphones—it’s easier, and now it’s culturally accepted.(在现实生活中联系。现实生活中的联系可能不像以前那么容易了。我们经常默认使用智能手机——这更容易,而且现在已经被文化所接受)”以及后文“We do this by looking people in the eyes, listening, being mindful, and choosing not be distracted by our phones or other technologies.(要做到这一点,我们要看着别人的眼睛,倾听,保持专注,不要被手机或其他技术分散注意力)”可知,前文提到用手机联系,后文提到我们要看着别人的眼睛,倾听,保持专注,前后是转折关系,所以F项“But we can decrease our loneliness if we build stronger personal interaction.(但如果我们建立更强的人际交往,我们可以减少孤独感)”符合文意,和前文构成转折关系,后文是做到这点的方法。故选F项。
5.设空位于段首,是本段的中心句,根据后文“It’s important to practice self-sympathy when you fail at things. There is no need to put yourself down. That kind of attitude won’t help you decrease loneliness. Instead, try talking to yourself in a way that is supportive and caring—and you’ll be more likely to acknowledge mistakes in trying to decrease loneliness, and hopefully do better next time.(当你在事情上失败时,练习自我同情是很重要的。没有必要贬低自己。那种态度不会帮助你减少孤独感。相反,试着用一种支持和关心的方式和自己说话——这样你就更有可能承认在减少孤独感的过程中犯的错误,并希望下次做得更好)”可知,本段主要讲述要对自己好一点,所以A项“Be nice to yourself.(对自己好一点)”符合本段主题。故选A项。
F.But make sure you reward yourself for them
G.This method helps stop small tasks from building up
【答案】1.E 2.G 3.A 4.F 5.C
1.前文提到“For example, if you are distracted by your mobile often, turn off the notifications.(例如,如果你经常被手机分心,那就关掉通知。)”
前面“Need to wash a dish? Do it now. Need to make the bed? Do it now. (需要洗碗吗?现在就做。需要铺床吗?现在就做。)”举了洗碗和整理床铺的例子,选项G“This method helps stop small tasks from building up(这种方法有助于防止小任务堆积起来)”中This method指代“2分钟规则”,阐述了该规则能带来的好处,即有助于防止小任务堆积起来,与前文内容紧密相关。故选G。
A“That’s not wrong(这没有错)”在这里承接上文 “Sometimes, we might need help from other people.(有时候,我们可能需要别人的帮助。)” 故选A。
4.该段讲的是“Celebrate small achievements(庆祝小成就)”。选项 F“But make sure you reward yourself for them(但一定要为此奖励自己)”中them指代前文的 small achievements, reward yourself和celebrating意思相近,本句与前文“Your achievements might be small.(你的成就可能很小。)”
5.根据下文“Break big tasks into smaller ones. This helps you set goals you can achieve. Tackle one small task at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed (不知所措) by big projects.(把大任务分成小任务。这有助于你设定可以实现的目标。一次处理一个小任务,避免被大项目压垮。)”可知,本段主要讲把大任务分解成小任务,这样能帮助设定可实现的目标。C选项“Simplify the task at hand(简化手头的任务)”照应下文“Break big tasks into smaller ones.( 把大任务分成小任务。)”
【答案】1.G 2.F 3.E 4.C 5.A

5.上文“In conclusion, creatively design routines blending exercise and nutrition in your own way. (总之,以你自己的方式创造性地设计结合运动和营养的日常习惯)”说明要以自己的方式创造性地设计结合运动和营养的日常习惯,可知每个人的方式都不一样。A选项“毕竟你们都是不同的”符合语境。故选A。

Engaging in physical activities, practicing mindfulness, or pursuing hobbies during breaks can further boost productivity by reducing stress and increasing overall well-being.
Prioritize effective techniques. Not all study techniques are created equal. 5 You just experiment with various techniques to find what suits you best and invest your time and effort accordingly.

【答案】1.A 2.D 3.G 4.F 5.E

【答案】1.C 2.F 3.E 4.G 5.A

【答案】1.B 2.G 3.C 4.A 5.E
1.根据上文“They may not react to the seasons as dramatically as their cousins outside do.(它们可能不会像外面的同类植物那样对季节有剧烈的反应)”可知,室内植物不会像外面的同类植物那样对季节有剧烈的反应。B 选项“But they still feel the changes.(但是它们仍然能感觉到变化)”与上文构成转折关系,且能引出下文“So if you are mad about an unhappy plant in winter, take it easy!(所以如果你因为冬天植物状态不好而生气,别着急)”。故选B项。
2.根据上文“This doesn’t mean completely ignoring them, but only water when the soil is dry.(这并不意味着完全忽视它们,而是只有当土壤干燥时才浇水)”可知,此处讲述的是何时浇水的问题。G选项“You can test this by putting your finger 2 inches into the soil.(你可以通过把手指伸进土壤两英寸来测试这一点)”中的“test this”指代上文判断土壤是否干燥,进一步说明了如何判断土壤是否干燥。故选G项。
3.根据下文“As we know it tends to be one of the more humid places in a house.(正如我们所知,它往往是房子里比较潮湿的地方之一)”可知,浴室是房子里比较潮湿的地方之一。C选项“Put your plants in your bathroom.(把你的植物放在浴室里)”能引出下文对浴室潮湿的描述。故选C项。
4.根据下文“While houseplants may love the windowsill for its light, they do not love the windowsill for its drafts and cold air. Likewise, they don’t love being near heat sources like heating pipes, radiators, and fireplaces. In a perfect houseplant world, day temperatures should range from 65 to 75 degrees and drop to no lower than 50 degrees at night.(虽然室内植物可能喜欢窗台上的光线,但它们不喜欢窗台上的气流和冷空气。同样,它们也不喜欢靠近热源,比如暖气管、散热器和壁炉。在一个完美的室内植物世界里,白天的温度应该在65到75度之间,晚上的温度应该不低于50度)”可知,本段主要讲的是室内植物对温度的要求,A选项“Keep a steady temperature.(保持稳定的温度)”能概括本段主旨,适合作主题句。故选A项。
5.根据上文“But as it turns out, houseplants are more sensitive to insects in winter because they go into that state of dormancy (冬眠).( 但事实证明,室内植物在冬天对昆虫更敏感,因为它们进入了冬眠状态)”可知,室内植物在冬天对昆虫更敏感。下文“So make sure you’re wiping the leaves regularly with a damp cloth.(所以要确保你定期用湿布擦拭叶子)”提到用湿布擦拭叶子。E选项“Insects love to hide in the dust on the plant leaves.(昆虫喜欢藏在植物叶子上的灰尘里)”解释了为什么冬天要擦拭叶子,因为昆虫喜欢藏在叶子灰尘里,且与上文提到的昆虫问题相呼应。故选E项。
【答案】1.E 2.B 3.G 4.F 5.A
1.前文提到“Now, researchers from the University of South Australia have published a new study in the Journal of Neuroscience.(现在,来自南澳大利亚大学的研究人员在《神经科学杂志》上发表了一项新研究。)”以及后文“This is good news for anyone who wants to study a foreign language.(这对任何想学外语的人来说都是个好消息。)”
2.前文提到“According to a blog on Everywhere English, there are two phases that the brain cycles through when sleeping. (根据Everywhere English的一篇博客,睡眠时大脑会经历两个阶段。)”由此判断,该段介绍了睡眠的两个阶段,后文中“this phase(这个阶段)”应指代第一个阶段,并描述其特点。B项“The first is called REM sleep.(第一个阶段是REM睡眠阶段)”与后文衔接自然,起到承上启下的作用,符合文意。故选B。
3.后文提到“But in fact, the researchers from the University of South Australia found that just the opposite is true.(但事实上,南澳大学的研究人员发现,事实恰恰相反。)” G项“One may think that memory and learning are gained when the brain is active.(人们可能会认为记忆和学习是在大脑活跃的时候获得的。)”
4.前文提到“Half of the students learned the language in the morning and then went on with their days.(一半的学生在早上学习语言,然后继续他们的日常活动。)” F项“But the other half studied in the evening and then slept at the lab.(而另一半则在晚上学习,然后在实验室睡觉。)”
5.后文提到“It’s an active, transformative state for the brain(对大脑来说,这是一种活跃的、变革的状态。)” A项“Sleep is not just restful.(睡眠不仅是休息)”直接呼应后文,点明该段核心观点。 故选A。
【答案】1.F 2.B 3.A 4.G 5.C
1.根据上文“Studies suggest that if you are deeply preoccupied with your thoughts, in the autumn, you may be at more risk for depression in the winter. 2.根据上文“Psychologists say that the feelings that often crop up in autumn come from our discomfort with change, and an anxiety and uncertainty about what that change will bring.(心理学家说,秋天经常出现的感觉来自于我们对变化的不适,以及对变化会带来什么的焦虑和不确定。)”和下文“And of these things the anxiety, the promise and even the careful thoughts— make it the ideal season to build resilience and practice mindfulness.(焦虑,承诺,甚至是仔细的思考,这些都使它成为建立适应力和练习正念的理想季节。)”可知,选项与上文为转折关系且承接下文说明情况也没有那么糟糕。故B选项“但也没那么糟糕。”切题。故选B项。
3.根据上文“But intolerance of uncertainty is a part of being human; everyone has it on some level.(但不能容忍不确定性是人类的一部分;每个人在某种程度上都有这种感觉。)”和下文“One way to build tolerance is to lean into it— to cultivate uncertainty rather than running away from it.(培养宽容的一种方法是向宽容靠拢——培养不确定性,而不是逃避不确定性。)” 故选A项。
4.根据下文“Quietly sit on a park bench and watch a tree drop its leaves, for instance, examine the roses in the garden that need pruning ... in such moments, it’s important to stop thinking, analyzing, or having internal conversations about work or troubles or even whatever you are witnessing.(比如,静静地坐在公园的长椅上,看着一棵树落叶,审视花园里需要修剪的玫瑰……在这样的时刻,重要的是停止思考,分析,或对工作或麻烦甚至你所目睹的任何事情进行内心对话。)”可知,本段主要在说缓解焦虑的策略是退后一步,简单地观察你周围的世界。故G选项“专家建议的另一个缓解焦虑的策略是退后一步,简单地观察你周围的世界。”切题。故选G项。
5.根据下文“If you are always trying to avoid difficult feelings, you might end up also cutting yourself off from love, richness and sweetness.(如果你总是试图避免困难的感觉,你可能最终也切断了自己与爱,丰富和甜蜜的联系。)”
